One More Thing: Hireka
Greetings Adventurers,
It's the end of July and that means we get to bring you another One More Thing and this time we're bringing a fascinating fey creature that moves just as well on land as they do in the sea. We hope that you'll find something to love with the Hireka.
As with all of these One More Thing releases, it's exclusive to patrons. If you're not a patron and want this release, please consider supporting us here. For patrons, you'll have to grab the files from your master post (linked below) or from the Katalogue to see the stats. We hope you enjoy it.
Design notes from Matthew:
Something that Fernando and I have always found awkward about the designs of "fish people" is that usually they just have a fishlike head plopped atop an otherwise humanoid body and that makes them uniquely suited to be both bad on land and in water. The reason fish have fins is because it's the most efficient way to move in the water and so we thought that we wanted to give a fish-like creature a shot but let them be as graceful on the land as they are in the water by just letting them fly!
I had gone back and forth on if I wanted to give some magical aspects to these creatures, but in the end I noted that there's a disturbing lack of interesting martial combat at higher levels where almost everything starts to get crazy magical effects or they are just really powerful fighters. It makes for a less interesting battlefield that I wanted to offer options for.
In the end I opted for creating these creatures as fiercely pious melee fighters that are dedicated to the places that they're sworn to protect and that meant giving them some interesting options in their toolkit to keep melee combat interesting at higher levels. I aimed for the sweet spot of annoying to deal with, but interesting to fight and hopefully I hit that.
This was such a fun piece to put together as it let me stretch my design into a space I don't do as often which is pure close up melee combatants. I usually try to offer something more varied and while that can be awesome, it's great to just deeply explore one aspect of combat a little more when possible.
