Breacher Beetle

Greetings adventurers!

Insects are one of the most fascinating things on this wonderful plane of existence. There’s so many varieties and likely thousands if not millions of species that we have yet to discover. So quick are their lives, but so purpose built are they to their specific tasks. I find that you can learn a lot about the ways the natural world functions by gazing on their societies and seeing how all of the world of bugs comes together to support life in ways that we never thought possible. I’m sorry, I’m waxing poetic again. I know you’re more interested in what they can do for you. Well, take a look at this interesting specimen…

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, Foundry VTT modules, a filterable catalogue of all of our items, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

Something that we haven’t done enough of is bug items. I know not everyone is into insects, but I find the variety of them so fascinating that I think it’s something we can explore from time to time to find something interesting, functional, and surprising. For this particular item, the initial idea was just “bug that can open locks” and sometimes that simple idea is all you need to get started.

For the 5E and PF2E versions of this, I basically came down to the same set of considerations. I knew that I wanted this to be a single use consumable and not something to be used time and time again. Some of that is for balancing, but also I just didn’t see tons of circumstances in which you would need to try to pick a lock from range. Usually if you’re picking a lock, you’re already in a place you aren’t supposed to be so being able to do it at range is really just if you need to distract someone while doing it.

Most of the considerations were around how far to allow it to sneak and how it should go about picking the lock. I wanted to let it scale upward and be useful on higher level characters, so I went with having it mostly scale off of your character’s stats with the exception being the sneaking part on 5E. The reason for the departure there is that I didn’t want a rare consumable to be the default method of picking a lock forever. I wanted this just to land on a fun little one off that could be perfect depending on the situation.

We’ve been working on building out the ideas for this month and they’re coming along swimmingly. We’re planning on a fun little collab later this month as well centered around a gothic concert hall that I think you all will love. I look forward to another awesome month of creating content for you all.

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.

Beautiful, but I would not want to meet a bug like that IRL.
