One More Thing: Farplane Fence

Greetings Adventurers,

February is coming to a close and while the groundhog may have said a few more weeks of winter are ahead, that won't put a damper on our creations. We've been cooking up a seedy salesman that's sure to have what you need should you have the right coin to pay them off. You'll never be really sure of their motives, but if you're in the market for ill-gotten gains then they are the perfect stop.

As with all of these One More Thing releases, it's exclusive to patrons. If you're not a patron and want this release, please consider supporting us here. For patrons, you'll have to grab the files from your master post (linked below) or from the Katalogue to see the stats. We hope you enjoy it.

Design notes from Matthew:

The idea definitely started with a very specific merchant in mind from a popular survival horror game. I just wanted to get that out of the way because there was no way we could avoid that reference point whenever we were starting. That said, I wanted to explore what would actually make something like that tick in 5E and PF2E. I realized that we would need some form of spell-casting merchant that had some form of special sauce to them, which we could provide with the magic item we released earlier today.

Picking the spell lists was actually one of the more entertaining parts of this as it let me really dig into some more unusual and non-combat spells. I think of combat as a last resort for these kind of creatures and therefor I wanted their kit to reflect that they are all about making sure that emotions never get high enough to cause that form of conflict. Additionally I really wanted to give them some ways to interact with the player as an interesting merchant which is why I built in the appraiser and just what you needed features.

Kind of the signature ability of this creature though is the ability to pull out just about any lower level consumable they need at a moment's notice. I hadn't seen much in the way of mechanics that let you do that in either system up until this point and I think that's a missed opportunity. With their specialty coat, the ability just seemed to fit in naturally and make them a weird little jack of all trades. Exactly what I wanted.

It's been such a blast making these tavern and inn themed creatures for a few months now, but next month we'll be moving on to a new theme mostly focused around places of power and worship. Not all of them will be good and some of them will be certainly quite weird. We hope you stick around and get weird with us.
