First Night

Greetings adventurers!

The business of the planes beyond ours are something that I’m known to tamper with from time to time. I just can’t help but wonder what might seep beyond the walls of our known world. No place inhabits that wonder like the astral sea where all manner of celestial bodies mix and mingle in a tantalizing soup of magics just waiting to be harvested. So many ripe fruits for the picking, I just can’t help but visit the floating bazaars and wonder what I might be able to collect on this particular adventure. This mask is from one such trip.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

The wonderful thing about making items for two systems is that you can explore different options for each one that uniquely fits how the system operates and truly feels like a usable item within that world. The awful thing about it is that sometimes you have a fun idea that sometimes just doesn’t translate all that well to one system or another. This item kind of embodies that dichotomy where I had an interesting idea, but knew that the execution would have to be totally different for each individual system. That can add some development time, but it’s also the right thing to do so that’s what we’re going to do.

On the 5E side of this item, we have a stance swapping mechanic that can be changed between using a bonus action to grow or shrink the moon projection. This changes what you have access to and what kind of bonuses you get. I decided to make this unlimited as we’re looking at a very rare item and it should carry some power to it. I knew that the extra fire damage on levelled spells would already limit itself by number of leveled spells cast that day, but the cold skill refresh needed a bit of a limit on its own. Basically I treated each state as a separate spell slot if that makes sense.

On the PF2E side, well stance swapping can certainly be a thing, but it makes for less interesting items in a lot of ways especially if you make it unlimited. PF2E requires a lot more restraint than 5E due to the tighter nature of its balancing. Thus why I chose to eschew the stance swapping and opt for a simpler design that gives you the bonuses you’re looking for like extra sight based spells and so on, without bogging you down in switching between or tracking states. Two systems, two very different philosophies.

It’s so great to work with other creators to kick off the year. This project was a collaborative effort with two other creators in the space. We’ll be releasing more info about that tomorrow along with some bonus content for you all, so look forward to that! I hope you enjoy this astral creation and will find some fun with the bonus content coming then!

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
