One More Thing: Cruyltide Cur

Greetings Adventurers,

We decided to launch our One More Thing for December a little early to give you time if you wanted to incorporate this into some last minute holiday themed one shots or something of that nature. We're all about offering something different, so we decided to make our take on a corrupted reindeer that prowled for those who haven't been so nice in this most festive time of year. We hope you "enjoy" some holiday fear with the Cruyltide Cur.

As with all of these One More Thing releases, it's exclusive to patrons. If you're not a patron and want this release, please consider supporting us here. For patrons, you'll have to grab the files from your master post (linked below) or from the Katalogue to see the stats. We hope you enjoy it.

Design notes from Matthew:

This one was so much fun for me to write simply because I could get a little hokey with the holiday puns and theming. Many of you will know by now that our general style is to lean into the fun of playing games. We take things seriously when we need to, but we're not afraid to get a bit silly when the game allows it and this was one of those times when the theme of what we were creating really allowed me as a writer and Fernando as an illustrator to lean into a bit of fun.

On the D&D 5E side, this creature is really going to be a bit of a bear to deal with considering that it has a pretty wide aura of difficult terrain to deal with as well as the lasting petrification from its bite. One of the issues I ran into developing the 5E version is that 5E doesn't have a lot of great mechanics for applying a type of poison with a hit. You basically have to write an entirely new skill just for that, which is what I ended up doing here. Overall it's a decent package, just one that I had to work a bit more for.

On the PF2E front, I love the varied degrees of success in the system and any chance I can get to use them, I will take that opportunity. Here I really got to let that shine with the Holiday Fear mechanic. Being able to scale up the effectiveness including the fleeing over the degrees of success and failure felt like a really nature way to balance an ability and put it on even footing with what the players can offer. I always tell folks to design good content for the system you're writing in instead of trying to shoehorn mechanics from somewhere else.

This isn't our last creation for the month of December. We've got one more little stocking stuffer coming your way and we hope you'll enjoy it when it releases on the 25th. I'm really proud of this year and all we've managed to accomplish with AB. I hope you'll all be along for the sleigh ride on another year.
