One More Thing: Alemental

Greetings Adventurers,

It's our final release of November and it's one that's certain to cause a stir in your local tavern should your players be unfortunate enough to come across one. I've often though it would be a blast to explore minor elementals. Things that are composed of none of the major elements, but are an offshoot of them in some ways. I mean take your water elemental, turn it into some other beverage and now we've got something entirely new and interesting.

As with all of these One More Thing releases, it's exclusive to patrons. If you're not a patron and want this release, please consider supporting us here. For patrons, you'll have to grab the files from your master post (linked below) or from the Katalogue to see the stats. We hope you enjoy it.

Design notes from Matthew:

I find that designing for the 4-6 level can be a little challenging as people are starting to really get their kits together, but they can still fall down pretty easily if you overdo it on damage from the start. I think one way to mitigate that is to start playing with conditions instead of just adding more damage on top of everything. These levels are perfect to start experimenting with what pieces of a kit can be debuffed without causing a problem overall and by selectively targeting certain kits, you can elevate others.

This creature in particular is going to be a nightmare for melee, but will likely let you casters and ranged shine. It has immunities and resistances that your party will have to learn as they fight it and this may just be the creature that convinces that melee fighter that having a ranged option as a backup wouldn't be a bad idea. Otherwise they're going to end up getting hit and poisoned/stupefied quite a bit here.

My biggest design philosophy is to make sure that everything stays tight to the kit. I had originally written another ability onto this that centered around social benefits of hanging around with an alemental and while that was cool, it really didn't suite the rest of the kit and made for quite a clunky feeling creature to have multiple things to manage. I loved that bit, but ended up cutting it for the sake of theme. It might come back in the future somewhere else though!

It's been another great month of creations and I'm quite pleased that we were able to put together a ton of content for you all to enjoy in your games. We'll be going into the holiday season soon (already in it here in the US) and we hope we can make you merry with our magic items and creatures.
