This week’s Dont Read the Comments runner-up is a white guy on Facebook telling a Black poet/activist that racism only exists on social media.
People like that are exactly why the rest of us have to keep being loud about it. The racist and fascists and bigots want to enjoy our art and culture, intentionally misunderstand the message, and then act like it's a crime when they're called out. It's important to keep them uncomfortable.
frank, one of the main reasons i love your reactions to this series is bc it pissed me off when other reactors would watch people getting exploited for being poor then say "can you imagine if this was real" and i'd always be like.....who gon tell em. so thank you for reminding people suzanne wrote those books after flipping through tv channels in the early 2000s and seeing live footage of the iraq invasion and reality tv surveillance state shit back to back. it has always been about real life

Oh boy. Sadly, this has been going on forever with THG fandom. How you can watch/read that content and not think the writer is saying something much bigger is beyond me and really discounts her talent completely. It’s the same people who watch Star Wars and root for the Empire.

on a serious note, this is why we need more dystopian/sociopolitical fiction that's written by and centers BIPOC in the mainstream because when most of the popular storytelling that reflects/pulls on the real-life history of oppression of BIPOC is told through white/'raceless' characters, there's too many people with low media literacy who refuse to see the connections to actual BIPOC history and act like those of us affected by that real history are awful/wrong for pointing it out

Katniss is depicted as olive skinned in the books and many fans have pointed out the obvious hints about her character being native american. Hell, even if that's not enough, in the second movie they show you there's a whole district for picking cotton purposes. how more obvious do they need it to be??? some people are just blind to what they dont want to see. just insane
