You said that one time, things were not moving away faster than the speed of light. Is that true? If you consider that even at the beginning the universe was infinite and as long as it was expanding at all, there was a horizon where it would be moving faster away from us than the speed of light. And then along came inflation and that distance from us would get a lot smaller!.
