Is this a supernova ready to explode, or is it just a trick of the light. A mission to Halley’s Comet in 2060. An amazing new image from Vera Rubin. Webb fails to find an exomoon. And in Space Bites Plus, some black holes formed much faster than their galaxies. All this and more in this week’s Space Bites.

“ The Truth is Out There “ 👽 🛸 😘
Whoa! I didn’t know you were part of Astronomy Cast? I’m a free member at the moment. Oh there you are! On one of their latest two part episodes 😊. Halley’s Comet I remember seeing. I also remember the T shirts doing the rounds afterwards, with “I’ll see it again in 2061” worn my those lucky enough to be in that position! I think we should nuke Betelgeuse - give it a kick start! I’m longing for it to explode. Shouldn’t a flood of neutrinos signal the start of a star going supernova? That image with trillions of pixels looked tremendous - awesome that we can get as much detail from the telescope! I’ve been to Iceland, apart from the crazy long distance from the airport to any civilisation and the cost of everything, it’s a fascinating country.
So I'm just a resin artist but I've taken to watching your Weekly podcasts as I'm also interested in all things space the vastness of it all really sparks my curiosity so thank you for making all this understandable to someone who has absolutely no technical clue really interesting stuff
Hey Fraser & team, if you haven't seen this feed it's a great source of updates about Vera Rubin. After the survey started it was only able to run for 2 weeks before being stopped by a terrible blizzard, and they've been in the recovery process since, which is why there hasn't been much news coming from it. And for the months that they were delivering alerts before the official survey start, it was all just from fairy brief imaging of a single field in the sky. So we can expect Vera Rubin to finally begin in full in another month or two. https://community.lsst.org/c/news/7
Ah yes 1986, getting up early to take photos of Comet Halley with my still camera on a tripod, just 10 second exposures with 1000 ASA film! And in 1985 I built a Hall effect VLSI chip for my Grad Diploma in Electronic Systems, coincidence you mentioned this too
Hello big fan ❤️
Well done Fraser, another great [Space Bites+], and done while on the road. Vera Rubin images are just amazing, aren't they? Enjoy your hike in the UK. I look forward to hearing about it.
Happy travels!
