Interviews with the Patrons
If you have already done an interview with me, jump towards the end of the post.
As you know, when you become a patron I send you an invite to do an interview with me. This isn't just for fun, I also get a lot of great insights from you guys which help us make Universe Today even better. As of today, I've personally interviewed 1267 new patrons.
Here's why I do it:
It refills my soul. Posting material on the internet is a low-grade sandpaper that grinds against my happiness. People go out of their way to be mean and trollish. The majority of people who quietly appreciate our work remain silent. I get to talk to you, and walk out of the conversation happier.
I learn if anything's wrong, or needs improving. If we've broken something, I find out ASAP. If I hear the same response over and over again, we come up with a solution. You know our material so you can give me the nuance I need.
You tell me what's good. We're all nerds around here, and I get to find out the best of the best. I've started watching new shows, reading new books, considering new 3D printers thanks to your advice.
These are completely private, I don't record them or store them beyond keeping some notes about problems to fix and podcasts to subscribe to. It should feel like hanging out with a friend over coffee (in case you're nervous about it). It's the one time you get to talk to someone you watch on YouTube and they'll actually talk back.

I can add that it was a thrilling experience to talk to Canada from the UK and to really have a Patreon creator taking the time to talk to ME. I was a bit scared of the idea at first, but when the moment came, it was incredibly easy to talk to Fraser. Trained in interview technique, he neither monopolised the conversation, nor let awkward silences occur. But it was more than that. Fraser is just a very nice person and doesn’t make you feel that you’re talking to someone who knows so much more than I do about the topic in question. We had 3 unsuccessful attempts at getting the time difference right and being around at the time he called. This was completely my fault by the way. I’m so glad I finally had my chance, as it was awesome and I would absolutely encourage anyone who gets this chance to go ahead. This is not what successful creators usually do and it shows how appreciative he is of the contributions he gets. It’s a touch which has made him go up 10 fold in my estimation.
If it wasn’t Fraser I talked to it was an amazing AI!! Was so surprised and was skeptical when Fraser reached out to set up a call. Never heard of such a thing. Probably because he’s the only one to do it. What a guy!
I looked at the buck moon thru my telescope today and brought my binoculars Frazer recommended I get during our call and I must say the view was just as incredible in the binoculars - just as he said it would be.
I was a bit nervous about it going in, but it was a really nice chill conversation with Fraser :) definitely worth doing even if you feel like you don't have much to say
Talking with Fraser was really nice, we talked about what I enjoyed about the channel, things that could improve, and we even chatted about different YouTubers we enjoyed watching.

I love the work Universe Today is doing. You keep me updated on the things I want to know about. Kudos -- keep it up!
I've been cutting back on my Patreon support overall but have no qualms re my continued support for Universe Today. Science and Science Fiction are two passions I've had since the 60s (I wasn't around prior to that) and the intersection of Fraser's and my Venn Diagrams make us a pretty close match. Note to self: Do something that Fraser would enjoy paying me for... The UT commitment to both quality content and a business model that isn't toxic, make it an easy choice. I wish I could give more. PS I thoroughly enjoyed my chat with Fraser. I made sure to have my big wall of SF visible in the background! 👍✌️🖖
