[Q&A+] When Did Dark Matter Appear, Excitement About TRAPPIST-1, Contributing to Astronomy

Which space object would I want to see with my own eyes? Can you meaningfully contribute to science without an Astronomy degree? Has dark matter always been around? And in Q&A+, my weird relationship with Venus as a planet.

BONUS QUESTION STARTS AT 17:39

Jupiter is the best Planet in our Solar System. Originally I didn't like it all that much till the Juno taught us SOOO much! The North Pole blows my mind every time!

Question. If the sun disappears and earth floats off into space I believe it would freeze, but what would happen to the atmosphere? Would it get stripped off or remain?

That’s very cool no pun intended 😂

"Closing in on 1000 episodes" - yep. Academy season 1 is 10 episodes. Episode 10 will be the 980th Star Trek production. Right now, there are commitments to bring the total number of Star Trek productions over 1000. (Academy's 10 episodes for season one, Strange New Worlds' 4th season's 10 episodes and 5th season's 6 episodes, and Academy's season two that is already filming will presumably be at least four episodes.)

I wish to see Omega Centauri from the inside, easy choice.

Just came over from YouTube after your short video explaining the copyright situation. I’m really tired of the YouTube algorithm and the AI slop everywhere, I might stop using it completely soon.

I abandoned YuckTube two years ago. Gifted myself a lifetime subscription to Nebula, found some of my favourite channels on Odysee and/or Patreon where I support and view some creators too. I’m having fun “channel surfing” (reminds me of the old days of cable TV :-) and *not* wasting my (invaluable) time with ads and slop. Hope you find your balance of viewing content and feeling content.

Did you watch Foundation ? You would love it.

Howdy Fraser, Very sorry you are getting the run-around from the dingalings. Hope it sorts out soon. In answer to the question "Can you meaningfully contribute to science without an astronomy degree ?" the answer is YES. Look up "Asteroid occultations" and the International Occultation Timing Association on Google.

Sorry about the YouTube craziness but I really wish there was a way to watch Patreon videos on TVs. I don't understand why they don't allow or support Airplay. I have suggested in the past that maybe you should join Nebula as there are TV apps for them but I realize that's probably a large commitment. I watch all your videos on a TV and never on a PC/Mac or phone so I think you should consider alternatives since according to YouTube themselves, I'm not alone. Just something I think you should consider.

"Expansion affect us locally" - the biggest effect will be that eventually from within the Milky Way, no distant galaxies will be visible. So anyone "freshly evolved intelligent beings" that far in the future will never be able to figure out the Big Bang. To them, the Milky Way (by then the Milkdromeda unified galaxy) will be all there is in the entire universe.

A simplified explanation for expansion of the universe I liked from a college professor is: The universe is expanding into the fourth dimension the way the two-dimensional curved surface of a balloon being inflated expands in the third dimension.

Sorry it took me so long to switch over. In light of today's YouTube nonsense, I've realized this is much better for everybody. Thanks for offering this over here on Patreon. Thanks for all the great information and videos!

Hi Fraser, exactly the same has Jeff mentioned below post, kept cutting out then restart very strange 🤔

What space object would I like to see with my own eyes? My eyes are squishy and fragile, so it would have to be something I can see from within a nice, compatible atmosphere. Somewhere in the universe there's an earth-like moon with an atmosphere orbiting a gas giant. That would be worth seeing.

"Boooo!" to whoever keeps copyright claiming your youtube video because of the ESO clip.

J
Joep Verlaan · January 22, 2026

Lately your video's on patreon have been hitching for me. In this case around the 5 minute mark, and at 7:38, and 10:18, 11:07, 16:47. Watching on chrome/android. Your video's on youtube play just fine.

m
martin swerv · January 22, 2026

yes I just had that as well, not sure on the timings, I wasn't paying attention, but the number of times it happened seems right.

J
James Fowley · January 22, 2026

If dark energy dissipates does the expansion of the universe stop? If we could push Venus around we should move it out to Mars orbit. It would be easier to do some kind of terraforming with Mars as it's moon.

S
Stevie Metke · January 22, 2026

On the magic mirror question: The Great Attractor, the Zone of Avoidance, and Sagittarius A* I wonder if ESO would be willing to send a Slander of Title C&D against the DMCA abusers

With friends, we each recently made our list of the top ten series of all time. Then knew I was a big trkkie so they were surprised that Star Trek was not on my list. I said : Star Trek is in a league of it's own and can't be classified among anthing else.

Byron Green · January 22, 2026

Just a technical note: I have had a few instances in the last couple of videos where Fraser seizes up here on the Patreon version. The subtitles fill in the missing dialogue - it's very obvious in the Angela Collier reference about Physics textbooks at 11:05 and a couple of other points. I'll add a comment and a time stamp in the Paul Byrne interview where it happened as well.

J
Jeremy Robinson · January 22, 2026

I've been experiencing this as well. It happened on the Paul Byrne interview quite often. But it appears to only happen on Patreon so maybe its a buffering issue Patreon is having. It was so bad on Patreon that I switched over to my Pocket Casts feed where I had no issues.
