[Q&A+] Capitalism in Space, Orbit vs Moon, Extraterrestrial Lightning | Q&A 375

How can capitalism exist in space? Which will be commercially successful first, Earth orbit or the Moon? Did we observe lightnings on other planets? And in Q&A+, could aliens be watching Earth as a reality TV show?

That was a great ending, your commenta about expertise. I think I will translate that ideas to spread it more, we should echo this. I will add that since we cannot be expert on every topic we need to exercise our critical skeptcism based on scientific method the way Carl Sagan teaches us

Fraser, another question: when the Alvarez father and son discovered the source of the K-T event, as I recall, the possibility of an interstellar object was not a primary concern. Considering the immense kinetic energy possessed by interstellar objects, a smaller object could cause far more devastation than asteroids of the same size within our solar system. Has the hypothesis that the K-T event was caused by an interstellar object been studied? More broadly, have we conducted studies on their potential destructive power, and what risk mitigation measures could be implemented?

With respect to the emerging capitalism of space, several issues raise significant concern. As humanity expands into the solar system and, eventually, beyond, a central question arises: which governing bodies or regulatory frameworks will be responsible for overseeing this expansion and safeguarding the welfare of individuals working in inherently hazardous extraterrestrial environments? In the absence of robust oversight—and given the impracticality of maintaining a sustained governmental presence in deep space—the potential for a profoundly dystopian future becomes apparent. Under such conditions, everyday labourers could face exploitation, inadequate protections, and the erosion of fundamental labour rights.

It sounds like space isn’t for you. Space beyond Earth orbit is highly likely to be free of the kind of oversight and control you are hoping for. Economic freedom (capitalism) will likely be central to both future investment and trade. And, it will be dangerous! Caveat Emptor

It is a shame Fraser feels he has to explain the scientific method. But clearly important given the level of ignorance we have observed over the last few years.

The universe may be infinite in space, but it is not infinite in matter. So no Earth duplicate.

How so? I would think it is an hypothesis without ground.

Great show Fraser, again, as always. But I'd like to commend your comments about the Scientific Principle; it's important that this message is put out repeatedly - and not just from you but also from your contemporary media and scientific communicators. Well done, and keep up the good work!
