A STARK AND SHINING NEW HORIZON
Hello!
Thank you all for your feedback on what you'd like this Patreon to become if it's not a big machine that pumps out one-page games every month. The most common response I got was "write whatever you want, as long as you write something," which was very flattering to hear but left me stranded beyond my beloved limitations.
There are a few important things to mention in this update, which I'll put in bold text. For example:
This Patreon is going to move to a monthly, not a per-creation, model.
The big wigs at Patreon, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to scrap the per-creation payment scheme. Seeing as I was only releasing one thing a month, this will have no impact on the amount you're being charged. But what will you be charged for?
What I have decided to do is an extension of the blog posts that were attached to the one-page games; I have very much enjoyed writing them, and people seem to enjoy reading them too, so I might as well lean in.
Luckily, I visited Belgium earlier this month for Kamping Kitbash (and ran a suitably ad-hoc workshop on games design), which has given me a lot to write about. So I have written about travelling, and toy soldiers, and theory, and chips, and micro-celebrity, and my imperilled digestive tract, and magic circles, and masks, and horse burgers.
The current draft has hit 9,000 words, so I'm going to divide it into two parts (with plenty of pictures) and release them a week apart. The first part will be free and the second will be paid-for - and then next month, we'll go monthly as discussed above.
Now, those of you at a physical pledge tier may be asking: what fresh nonsense will arrive in my mailbox? I have been told to reassure you that something will by Maz and Chant, who are masterminding this process, and that they will be in touch soon with a series of useful questions. Please stay tuned.
It's also worth noting that we are interested in moving away from Patreon in the long term and establishing our own walled garden of Fun Stuff using the Ghost platform on our website. This is all in very early stages, so nothing firm yet, but I wanted to flag it as our intent.
That's all for now. Thank you again for your enthusiasm and your incredible support.
With love and fury,
Grant
