WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

This Patreon has formed the backbone of Rowan, Rook and Decard, and it's allowed me to earn money - actual honest-to-god money - in exchange for doing whatever the hell I like as long as a) it's one page long and b) I show it to you.

I'd like to thank you all for being so supportive over the last, shit, thirteen years. I've been able to use this space not only as a source of income but also as a place to let my brain run around. I wrote, back when I set it up, that my "brain fizzes like pop rocks dumped in coke" and, while that's no longer true thanks to 150mg Venlafaxine daily and a decade of cannabis use, I still have too many ideas and I love the fact that I have somewhere to put them.

The ideas aren't perfect. They're sometimes not even good. But the one-page format means I can take wild swings at themes and topics that wouldn't see the light of day in a proper book, with page numbers and that. I couldn't publish HORSE AROUND THE HOUSE as a hardback volume. HONEY HEIST wouldn't be anywhere near as popular if you had to pay for the damned thing. JASON STATHAM'S BIG VACTION, when registered on the ISBN network, might well attract the attention of his legal team. Or, worse: his illegal team.

So: thank you. Ridiculous business. Wonderful stuff.

NOW: I've done a hundred one-page games and I want to do something else.

Please find attached a list of potential routes this Patreon could take in the near future. If you can vote for the ones you like, I'd find that incredibly helpful.

Love and fury,

  • Grant

Right, wild sales pitch, write a 100 page RPG, but make each individual page it's own limited patreon tier; whoever locks in that tier gets the only copy of that page, and it's up to them to decide what to do with it. Perhaps the whole thing will get released by generous backers. Perhaps one guy literally takes their page unopened to the grave with them, leaving the Internet to argue over what might have been on it, or puts it in a safe deposit box and actively challenges people to get it via heist.

That's some Wu Tang shit right there. I'm not against it

It's your silly long form I love. I love Spire, but I still think the exploration of ideas in Goblin Quest is the best thing you've ever done. I agree we've had enough 1 page games. That said, the £15 a month or whatever to have them arrive at my house was an easy yes. I'm not sure what you can do that makes strangers from the internet want to pay that kind of money as an income stream to you, nor rewards them with the physical joy of the games themselves. For me, I think a longer game, arriving spread by spread, maybe in playable or useable chunks. I think you could design it as you go; we'd be fine with nonsensical design decisions, or 4 pages of prose as to why the Badgers took over the world or whatever

If possible I want video and/or audio content of you running your games as GM!

Gothic poetry or slam poetry - Ideally performed live, with bongo accompaniment, punctuated with finger snaps - I expect only the most purple of prose/

B
Beyond Cataclysm · September 25, 2025

I don't think there's enough gothic erotic slam out there

Have chucked some votes in but, honestly, there's no wrong answer (besides the feet pics). Anything but nothing.

OddOod · September 20, 2025

Bud, I'm paying a buck a pop for this stuff. Aside from HH, I've used probably all of three of thame games you've published (I literally pick randomly and we have a blast). I'm all for you just continuing to fuck around. That being said, you're a pretty creative person and a remarkably good writer, have you tried your hand at writing fiction? What with Dungeon Carl popping off, I imagine you might strike gold there

I’d love a game building guide. I struggle to wrangle my ideas into a format, some advice on that would be awesome.

J
Jarrod Lowe · September 19, 2025

Could we get all the one-page games in a single download?

G
Grant Howitt · September 22, 2025

God, that sounds like a lot of work. Thanks to the CC license you're free to be the change you want in the world and compile them yourself though

You thrive in CONSTRAINTS; it's where most of your one-page ideas come from. So my suggestion is to create a series (1-4 a year) with a similar constraint, maybe around accessibility? - What if you were blind or in the dark? - What if you couldn't speak and only had to communicate visually/physically - What game can you play with an alzheimers patient?

J
J Sinnett · September 19, 2025

You do you, we'll be here to support it. You've earned that multiple times over at this point.

Sean Fowler · September 19, 2025

You have had some awesome games over the years, and some that were not as much. Perhaps make some sequels? Take stock of your best games and reskin them as sequels. If you have good mechanics, you don't need to toss them just because you used them once. Keep up the great work, generally, though!

SethScott · September 19, 2025

Similar to the settings option, what about creating bestiaries (a few pages or installments of a larger project in small chunks), for a specific setting, environment, or type? E.g., an underworld (dead or mole people), aquatic or deep sea, or Oops! All weird little guys. It could also give you a chance to collaborate with different artists and creators on each project. Longer short-form games of 2-5 pages (or 10+ pages, I’m not your dad 😂). Tables for rolling whatever you’d like to make: personality quirks for characters, magic items, embarrassing results when you fail a roll or get a nat 1, NPCS that you run into, random encounters, etc. Random lore drops through text, poetry, song lyrics, ancient scrolls with missing words/segments, etc. about existing settings, characters, creatures, or for random bits and bobs floating around in that beautiful brain of yours. Pantheons of deities or just stand alones. Behold Svetlockia, the Eternal and Undying, first and last of their name! This is Frank, the god of farts. Most importantly, do what makes you happy and/or strikes your fancy. 😁

Jeff Good · September 19, 2025

What if you took like 5, 10, 12 some arbitrary subset of the 100 one pagers and expand them to like zine-size? Either by your whims or patron vote?

J
Jackie Williams · September 19, 2025

What about a sort of game design guide? I’d love to learn how to design my own one page RPGs.

Rich Fowler · September 19, 2025

I love so much of everything you're doing. My game group has played Fucked Up Little man probably a dozen times and the improv group that shares a space with us has taken to using it as their format sometimes. We're in fucking Indiana, USA! That's reach, my friend!

I'd love to see you try a few of these and then re-poll. You may find you like some of the options more than others and patrons may, too. I'd love to see a collaboration between you and Exeunt Press / Skeleton Code Machine. I'd happily pay for a lightweight game but not one page, necessarily - something in the generous space between Honey Heist and Spire. I'd read a column about you run and hack other games and what your design process is like; (Grant Howitt's take on Tunnel Goons, for example). And I'd bet a one-page game or two will still pop up from time to time when you don't feel like you have to make them and inspiration strikes.

I'm wishing that was a multiple choice question. Not personally sure about the feet. Other than that... EDIT: Ok, so Patreon uses radio button icons for multi-choice checkboxes. Good to know, but poor web design!

B
Benj · September 19, 2025

You can tick more than one option.

D
DantePendragon · September 19, 2025

I love the one page games, but if you're ready to move on then you've earned it. Youre one page games are my go to answer for game nights when we are between campaigns or I haven't had a chance to prep, so I would love to see a Grant Howitt version of the Lazy DM workbook, just a bunch of random, instantly usable ideas.

O
Ollie of the Beholder · September 19, 2025

Look, I continue to pay for Patreon subscriptions that haven't put out a blessed thing in two years and have had complete radio silence as to why. You could literally just randomly shout OH SHIT I FORGOT I HAD THIS once every decade and I will continue to support you. I would love to see any of all of the things in this poll, except maybe the feet pics, but I am here for whatever. (And if you do start adding those, maybe create an "everything but feet pics" tier and I will happily pay the increase to skip those.)

S
Sarah Cole · September 19, 2025

'I want to do something else.' If you know what you actually want to do (rather than just 'not one-page games') then you should do that, whatever it is. You know I love pretty much all of your work, but I'd most like to see something you've written because you want/need to write it. Yes, even if that thing turns out to be more erotic original fiction about Sonic the Hedgehog.

G
Grant Howitt · September 19, 2025

Gods. I *wish* I knew what I wanted to do.

citizenkane · September 19, 2025

I'd be sad to see the END of 1-page games on this Patreon, but I'm also happy for you to sprinkle them in between other passion projects. I'm personally very interested in your design notes, ideas, and even development diaries!

L
Lumphammer · September 19, 2025

All of the above, minus the feet pics ideally but if you do post them I’ll give it a damn good go.

B
Barry O'Leary · September 19, 2025

I think some of your one page RPGs would work as proper 300 page books with art and all the rest of it. The Golden Sea, Hack the Planet and Sexy Battle Wizards would be my votes.

J
J W · September 19, 2025

I'm still running Golden Sea as a short campaign. The players are liking it. An expanded book would be great, but the original game does a really good job of dropping hints and prompting the players to fill the gaps. I guess there's a risk of losing that.
