Kenku Bin Wizards
So: what if goblins built dragons?
When enough goblins hang out together, they invariably construct a dragon statue out of any magically-resonant junk they can lay their hands on. If the statue gets big enough and cool enough, it will come to life as a real dragon (albeit one made from empty healing potion bottles) and eat everyone involved.
That was the thought (on Saturday afternoon) that inspired Kenku Bin Wizards; it didn't make sense that goblins would be building a dragon, cause that's what kobolds would do. So I took the dragon out of it, and had a game about wizard goblins using improvised magic, and then after much thought and doing all the layout I decided that I should take the goblins out as well. The protagonists felt a bit nasty and my gobs are more sort of mischievous, and if you want something nasty there's little better available than a kenku.
(Kenku are horrible little crow people from D&D. I love 'em.)
So: no goblins, no dragons, but the core system remains. I wanted to play around with the idea of in-character prep during games, seeing as it's so popular in OSR - players are expected to rig the situation in their favour before attempting something risky. Bin Wizardry is that, but in more detail and with more room for creative expression, as each spell requires three components to work but you can get fast and loose with it thanks to magical wiggle room.
I'm rambling. It's a fun little game. It uses a cut-down Resistance system to power mundane actions and some terminology I stole from Reign to power spellcasting. You get a familiar and it might be a fistful of earthworms; your name is something like JACKIE HOTSAUCE or OSTERMANN BUNK; one of the missions is to abduct a pig. What's not to like?
Much love,
G
