Part 1
After untold hardship, Mo Shuiyao and the others passed through the Sixteen Minor Hells and at last stepped off the Road of Reincarnation and into the Gate of Samsara. The moment they entered, they were transported into different great halls. Though separated, they were at least spared the pursuit of the strange man.
The strange man himself was unexpectedly teleported away. He had not anticipated that passing through the Gate of Samsara would lead him into a hall entirely different from those before. This one was far larger and contained many areas that had never been explored.
At present, everyone was scrambling within the hall for treasures while searching for the legendary Book of Destiny. When they encountered one another, fights would occasionally break out over valuables.
The treasures within this temple belonged mostly to treasure hunters who had perished here before. There were not many truly valuable relics left.
At this moment, the group scattered in all directions, avoiding The Strange Man. The Strange Man was busy gathering items and did not have time to pursue and kill them.
At this time, Liu Yue was together with Luo Yun, while Lin Xiao was with Mo Shuiyao. The four of them paired off and moved together, avoiding The Strange Man.
Su Miaoqing looked at the corpses covering the ground inside the Divine Hall, and her eyes immediately lit up. Eagerly, she said, “Xiao Yifeng, why don’t we go in and grab some treasures as well?”
However, Xiao Yifeng shook his head and continued using the Stone Stele to project the situation of the entire Divine Hall, searching for the legendary Book of Destiny. For the time being, he was unable to find it.
With the Stone Stele in hand, Xiao Yifeng discovered that he could exert some simple control over the Immortal Palace. As long as Su Miaoqing did not resist, he could send her into rooms containing treasures, retrieve them, and then teleport her back.
Through repeated teleportation, the two of them obtained quite a number of treasures. Most were top-grade magic treasures or lower-grade immortal artefacts. They had not seen a single mid-grade immortal artefact, only damaged ones.
As for the Immortal Palace, no medicinal pills were found. Presumably they had all been looted long ago. Only because Xiao Yifeng possessed partial control over the Immortal Palace was he able to pick up a few overlooked treasures.
Suddenly, Xiao Yifeng finally discovered the embryonic form of the so-called Book of Destiny. No wonder it could not be found. It had only just begun to condense. It was merely the shadow of a book and had not yet solidified.
Xiao Yifeng noticed that Luo Yun and Liu Yue were unusually close to the Book of Destiny. Sure enough, they had not walked much further before they saw the Gate of Samsara forming not far ahead. Both of them were delighted.
“This is bad. They’re going to take the Book of Destiny,” Su Miaoqing said anxiously. Xiao Yifeng shook his head. With his understanding of the Immortal Palace, things were not so simple.
“Fairy Luo, it seems we are rather fortunate. We have actually found the Book of Destiny first!” Liu Yue said happily.
Luo Yun’s eyes brightened as she gazed at the Book of Destiny in fascination and murmured, “So this is the Book of Destiny that even those of the Mahayana Realm would go mad for?”
She looked up at Liu Yue and said, “Fellow Daoist Liu, this time it was thanks to you. You truly are Yun’er’s lucky star. Let us go.”
“Mm! Let’s quickly take the Book of Destiny, or the others will arrive soon!” Liu Yue said happily as he turned, intending to fly towards the Book of Destiny.
However, just as he turned around, he suddenly gave a muffled groan of pain and looked back in disbelief.
Behind him, Luo Yun had snapped a string from her zither and used the broken string to pierce his Golden Core from behind.
“Fairy Luo… why?” Liu Yue asked in disbelief.
“There is only one Book of Destiny. If you do not die, how can I take it?” Luo Yun said expressionlessly. “Thank you for accompanying me along the way, Fellow Daoist Liu!”
“I never once intended to compete with you for the Book of Destiny. Why would you treat me like this? You are not this kind of person. In the Spider Lily Sea, you even waited for me.”
Liu Yue spat out a mouthful of blood. Even though the life force within his body was rapidly fading, he still found it difficult to believe.
“You are mistaken! I did not intend to wait for you. I had only just put away the Spider Lily Sea Stone Stele when I sensed the two of you catching up from behind. I was merely looking for an opportunity to see whether I could kill you both.”
Luo Yun smiled, her smile laced with mockery.
“So all along the way, you were only using me?” Liu Yue asked.
“Otherwise? Did you think I liked you?” Luo Yun retorted, before laughing so hard her body trembled like a flower in the wind.
“With you acting as a free hired hand for me, why wouldn’t I take advantage of it? All I needed to do was give you a smile.”
Luo Yun showed Liu Yue that gentle smile of hers, just as before, soft as flowing water, as though it could intoxicate anyone who looked at it.
Liu Yue had never expected it to be like this. He could not help but let out a bitter laugh. “So it turns out everything was just my own wishful thinking. How utterly ridiculous.”
“Now you have no regrets, do you, Fellow Daoist Liu? Thank you. Farewell.”
Luo Yun exerted a little force with her hand. The sharp zither strings smashed through his lower abdomen, severing him cleanly in two at the waist. She then drew his inner core into her grasp.
Looking at Liu Yue’s corpse, his eyes still open in death, she smiled faintly and collected all of his belongings.
All of this was witnessed by Xiao Yifeng and Su Miaoqing. Neither of them had expected that this seemingly innocent woman would be so ruthless, and that from the very moment she stepped into the Immortal Palace, she had been acting the entire time.
Xiao Yifeng felt a sting of self-reproach. He truly did not understand women. He had even judged her weak-willed. Weak? That was a heart tempered in ten thousand years of glacial iron.
Among those who entered the Immortal Palace, it seemed that Liu Yue was the only honest one. What had the honest man done wrong?
He could not help but sigh for Liu Yue. In the end, his sincerity had been misplaced.
He glanced at Su Miaoqing beside him, a look difficult to describe. Su Miaoqing understood the meaning of his gaze at once. She rolled her eyes and said, “Don’t even think about it. I would never treat you like that.”
Meanwhile, Luo Yun was calmly counting her gains when sharp applause suddenly echoed through the hall.
“Fairy Luo truly has remarkable methods, playing that fool Liu Yue in the palm of her hand. Even I was deceived!” It was Mo Shuiyao, standing at the entrance of the grand hall, her eyes filled with mockery.
“I never expected that the fairy of Luoshu Manor would be even more skilled at manipulating hearts than a demoness like me,” Mo Shuiyao laughed.
“It takes one to know one,” Luo Yun replied, utterly unrepentant.
The dashing Lin Xiao stood at Mo Shuiyao’s side. He let out a quiet sigh. “Poor Liu Yue. I doubt he understood, even in death, why the Fairy Luo he cherished turned into this.”
There was a hint of disgust in his gaze as he looked at Luo Yun. He prided himself as a protector of fair maidens, and detested women who toyed with genuine affection.
Luo Yun remained indifferent. She rose into the air and flew towards the Book of Destiny. Lin Xiao and Mo Shuiyao immediately followed, pursuing her.
She was the closest to the Book of Destiny. Just as her fingers were about to brush its surface, a dark figure burst into existence and struck her with a single palm. She was hurled backwards, crashing to the ground and coughing up blood.
Before the Gate of Samsara now stood a ragged, uncanny figure, neither fully human nor ghost. The Strange Man had abruptly teleported forth.
“The Book of Destiny belongs to me. And you belong to me as well. If you wish to live, you have to become my cultivation furnace,” he said, letting out an eerie laugh.
Luo Yun and Lin Xiao were caught completely off guard. Their faces drained of colour.
