Episode 31: Tran Girlismo Is An Anagram For Grim Oil Rants

Hello! On this episode of Grim Oil Rants (apologies/thanks to our wonderful friend of the show Nathaniel for stealing this bit from him), the girls just want to have fun, but they can't. Degrowth Don is back at it again, so it's time for an (admittedly more limited than last weeks') analysis of the diesel market. Then, the feds decide that since fuel prices are so low it's a great time to abolish CAFE in a way that Victoria thinks might actually make the entire market balloon more in size, and NHTSA admits will cost us more in fuel. Great.

Finally, Jordan plays a really good video game that can never happen again because Electronic Arts is too busy bonesawing small studios they purchase to make Infinite Money with Zero Employees.

Victoria especially would like to extend her genuine apologies for another oil-based downer episode but wow she is feelin' it this week. The uplifting, fun episode is the bonus this time. Sorry y'all.

As always, our opening theme is off Stella Spazzatura's Horse Tranquilizer Simulator and our fantastic editor who keeps us out of prison is Alex aka Harmful Park, who is looking for work and you should hire to work on your podcast too!

Need For Speed was early car culture for me too, but I'm older so it's the first five games that I'm fond of. 1, 3 and 5 most of all. 6 was kinda average and then it was Underground and the huge shift in focus for the series.

They do that coloured agricultural diesel thing here in Ireland too. Back when I was in university, I remember some guy telling me that they had to change the formulation of the dye they used because some genius figured out that if you threw a loaf of bread into the diesel, it would wick the colour out of the fuel and you could use it in your car, sell it on, etc. with impunity 🤣

Also, Vicki, I hope to see you on the 10th. You'll know me by the Mamiya Press Super 23 I'll be carrying. Easily one of the weirdest and most trans medium format cameras I've ever come across. Of course I had to have it immediately.

Jordan, wait until you've developed with Cafenol. That's some deeply weird stuff to pour into a film development tank. Pitch black and kinda soupy, but it develops nearly as well as the XTOL I've been using forever, using stuff you can get at the grocery store. Chemistry is wild.

Really nice to see someone else singing the praises of NFS Unbound. Genuinely enjoyed it a lot, and it's especially a great game for someone who NEEDS to make her own cool liveries for every car. I simply can't keep up with all the damn cars horizon games throw at you.

In 1972 my dad traded some carpentry for a 1960 Mercedes 190D which was probably the only diesel car in our whole timber-based county. A couple years later OPEC did the embargo and we kids in the back seat all laughed merrily as we cruised past the looong lines at the gas pumps to the lonely 3¢ a gallon diesel pump.

Shouldn’t the federal gas tax be based on weight and speed rating of the tires ‘how big & douchey is your footprint’ / the thing actually touching the road regardless of drivetrain type to preferentially punish all these giant cop / hell cat trucks and incentivize reasonably sized cars & lower single occupancy and unnecessary speed-weight-miles on rubber tires (not that we have nationalized electrified rail and non-car & truck centric urban planning to shift things to / invest in viable alternatives? No finicky invasive tracking devices nor flat EV surcharges on smug coastal elite states (of which I live in the lesser pnw major city). No need for SE asisns (such as there was a material / non-ideological interest in the Vietnam’/ French Indo-China it was Michelin rubber?) to starve to make giant Tesla and SUV tires for us? Better they grow food? It’d have to be top down and federal to work (good luck these days?), and unlikable as mayor Pete is, it’s the kind of policy he actually agrees with? ‘Pay to play / more ‘user-fee’ like to use public roads? Maybe we could get some durable more standardized size tires more like we used to have and incentivize some re-treading & better behavior with reasonably sized cars with pedestrian safety ratings that affect insurance rates? I guarantee you spike strip some monied bro dozer suburbanite invading our cities proper and it’s $10k for new tires and maybe behavior will change? Car won’t move, but pay to play / you’ll have new tires, no traffic ticket or points or relying on the police? And in communist utopia parody in Minecraft some public shaming or bicycle gangs would be maybe a bit more ‘eliminationist’ when it comes to car-centric affluent suburbia… Some Dutch style Continuous grade sidewalks that act as the speed bump from side streets and calm traffic and some neighborhood spike strips for bro dozers instead of police harassment in neighborhoods of durable brick Baltimore, Pittsburgh , Philly, Boston, SF proper (not brick in SF so much / tall redwoods to build houses out of there?) and NY row houses with deep private back yards, alleys and shop garages and mother in law apartments? Less policing required, talk to your neighbors, walk and take transit or E-thing to get around, use less energy and get the best of both a house and apartment and be low maintenance and still have plenty in common with a farmstead? They discontinued the Prius V that can roll on 195-65-15 mk4 VW full size spares / modern day skinny durable pizza cutters that ride well in a modest midsize station wagon that I’ve been venturing for the last quarter century for the ‘71 Volvo 145 (easy to advocate for a tax you’ll never pay / have a.m tire machine in your trashy back yard, but doing the right thing and recycling low mileage premium toxic rubber pre date code more durable Michelin defenders w/honest 1/2” tread @ good quality control ( the best of the old pre date code after the ford Firestone rollovers and corporate tire chain lobby for their crappy slave SE Asia tires / low tar cigarettes race to the bottom on quality auto parts unlike the old pre date code Michelins that used to take no weight on the fine balancer with NOS straight hub-centric wheels) never offered the Prius V in a plug-in with the new 210hp updated drivetrain and basically only sold them in the PNW, so accordingly Toyota cancelled it / this is why we can’t have nice things! I hate living here, but idk what the alternative is, but at least partially plugged into Norway oil $ in the days of auto recycling, so? But the ex is Norwegian with an advanced degree / my advice was to maybe make plans to get out in early covid / been revealed that ‘there is no valid social contract’ here? Idk what the viable path forward or responsibility living in the imperial core is at this point?

I am fascinated by like, AAA titles in the 00s left massive cultural legacies meanwhile modern AAA games leave nothing and you end up with a ps1 looking horror game made by two German homosexuals having the same cultural impact as like silent hill, resident evil, abd dead space (signalis is good and rules and one of my favorite games but it's wild enough this is the case it feels surreal)

T
The *suspiciously* woman-shaped Biomech MAD-3R · October 2, 2026

I KNOW RIGHT?? It's insane to me [good] that SIGNALIS has reached the level of cultural impact where game devs are aspiring to mimic it.
