Oops, he did it again
Brandon is out with another video! And after only... ahem, three months?
I think he's being a little too shy. We need to encourage him with many "likes and subscribes" 🔴
In the video Brandon goes through several possible strategies that you can use to optimize CD so that it plays as well as possible in VR. Even if your computer has a potato in the PCIe slot.
I believe we're going to need more and more videos of this kind, because not only Moore's law is dead and new GPUs are no longer coming out: even the existing ones seem to have become the target of ridiculous and continual price hikes. Buying a new RTX 5090 these days will set you back... about $5,090. I'm not joking.
I wish I could put my own graphics card under a bell jar and wrap it in cotton wool to protect it! But it would just overheat and die. If you love something, set it free, they say.
Actually, even without the cotton wool, gaming in the summer with an RTX 5090 going full blast under your desk is not for the faint of heart. I'm starting to wonder whether I should just hang my PC outside the window and drill a hole in the wall for the power, USB and DP cables. Maybe the next generation of PCs will be built as split systems, with an external unit for cooling. But we no longer have to worry about that, because most likely they won't be built at all. All the RAM in the world belongs to AI now.
But I digress. Settings. For https://store.steampowered.com/app/3321460/Crimson_Desert/ in VR. By Brandon. Watch and enjoy!!

are there any chance that games like once human or conan exiles comes in the mod?
Conan Exiles works pretty well with UEVR I think. Haven't tried it but I remember seeing that it worked.
I am trying to play Crimson Desert in VR, I have moved the mod across it says everything was successful after running the config, I click play in VR and it says, "starting launch" "launching executable" it looks like its all going to go through, but then returns back to the play button screen. Any ideas ? be kind i'm not very computer savy so keep it simple pls.
The number one reason people have had crashing or black screens after running the config file is that frame gen is on :) Try renaming dxgi.dll to dxgi_.dll in the game folder where you put the REAL files. That should stop REAL from injecting and allow you to see if frame gen is on. Just rename back to dxgi.dll afterwards. Also make sure you don't have something like the Nvidia app adjusting or "optimizing" game settings. Do you have any mods installed?
I followed the recommended settings, 2032x2032 res, DLSS 4.5 L DLAA, RR on, 1/3 frame rate, lowered the FOV restriction sliders , but when I click the "apply fov restricitons" button, it stays at 15 pixels per degree. I'm also on a quest 3, virtual desktop on a 5090. Any recomendations?
I found the issue, the FOV restriction was not working with the Oculus run time. Perhaps it's because I'm using the VD USB beta version?
Hi Brandon, Have you checked the new Ray Reconstruction ? It seems it improves the visuals in Crimson Desert, making it look more clean. Some in comments report being easier to install it with DLSS Swapper. https://www.reddit.com/r/CrimsonDesert/comments/1vutfjq/pc_new_dlss_3107128_improves_rr_ghostingshimmering/
No, I haven't. Does performance seem about the same?
Hi, im having an issue with LR mods being low resolution even when they are set to high resolution in the settings they are at 30-40ppd and set to the max resoltion in the game settings, im using a Galaxy XR headset, i have only just got it but other games seem to look fine but just LR mods (which looked amazing on all my other headsets) look like they are running way lower res than they should
I have zero experience with that headset. Is it SteamVR native? If so, do you have SteamVR set as OpenXR runtime and does it report that you are using OpenXR runtime at the top of the main tab of the REAL overlay? Nope it isn't. Are you using Virtual Desktop?
Anyone getting freezing on launch of crimson desert with the latest 1.18.02 update?
VR support is broken after the current update. Luke is working on it, but it might be a bit. If you look below your post, I posted quick downgrade instructions if you want to keep playing for now.
OK, might take a bit for the fix for CD, so here are instructions for downgrading in the meantime. Open the Steam Console Press Win + R Type or paste: steam://open/console Press Enter. A new “Console” tab appears in Steam. Run the depot download command Paste the following command into the console and press enter. download_depot 3321460 3321461 1058876112516278135 Wait for the download to finish It will take a while (full game size). When done you will see: Depot download complete : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_3321460\depot_3321461" (path may differ if your Steam library is on another drive) Then drag all the files from inside the folder you just downloaded into the updated Crimson Desert folder you have in your actual Steam game folder. You should be good to go until the fix drops or the next update :)
Big issue with kcd2.... it crashes right away. I re run real config and it says it appears the game has been never run before Def not true lol but i disabled the mod ran it anyhow. Still does same thing. Is it because im using sboys3?
update the LR framework RealVR.ini file saved to have PreferredAPI2=2. The games will not launch without this.
Is Crimson Desert broken after the new patch (1.18.00)? Im getting a flat, doubled image. No VR.
I'll have to check. Updating now. If you check your RealVR64.log file and notice any patches not applying, then it is broken. I'll check after I update.
Is there any benchmark or any indication what processor works better with a rtx 5090 in Luke's VR ? Would an Intel 285k run smooth enough ? Or a 9800x3d is necessary for a smooth experience in VR ?
I am running a 9800x3d but I think Luke is running an Intel from a couple gens ago.... If I remember right, or he hasn't upgraded it. I don't think it matters a lot honestly as long as you have a solid CPU from the last couple gens. Totally depends on the game as far as 3d cache goes and whether AMD or Intel will have a bit of an fps advantage. At really high resolutions, it tends to not matter a lot. So, for some games it may be more significant but probably not a lot generally. Like, would it be worth investing in a new motherboard and RAM etc. right now? No, not likely at all. Especially with prices right now 😢 If you are just upgrading the CPU only, it might be worth it. Especially if you do other things with your system. I already did the AM5 MB and RAM upgrade when AM5 first came out, but things were cheaper and I wanted to be able to still use newer AMD CPUs down the road.
So, what's next!?
I can't get Hogwarts Legacy to run propperly anymore. I installed the newest early access version of this mod and selected to delete all settings so everything is on default. The game launches fine in VR but it uses the regular desktop resolution of 3440x1440. Usually I would now look in the settings for the new resolutions from the mod with have the 1:1 aspect ration etc. but non are there. Next step was just using adapt resolution which I tried. But the moment I adapt the game exits VR and I am back on the SteamVR dashboard while the desktop mirror just shows a flickering game screen and LOD in the distance being super low. You can't open the mod UI anymore or use the ingame options. I always have to run the realconfig.bat and delete the settings to make it work in VR but always been back to the very low blurry resolution and the moment I adapt, same issue as discribed before.
Haven't tried it in a while, I'll see if it is still working for me and let you know. If you have reinstalled the game, try turning off DLSS too and see if that gets it to kick into VR properly. For some reason it can stop REAL from injecting properly initially, but once it does, you can turn DLSS back on and it is fine. That has worked for a handful of people in the past. I'll check it out in a bit here too.
We need more optimization, now more than ever. The GPU prices skyrocketed. It's goodbye 5090. Humans can't affort it anymore, only AI data centers. The only good thing is that game engineers/developers will be forced to make more optimised games. I hope Luke will come up with some magic to push the performance on the mid tear video cards.
Dear Mr. LukeRoss thank you for creating such an amazing tool and allowing the world to experience more titles in this new perspective. I would like to share some of the vids that I've created using your tool ✌️
Can you link one?
okay DREAM AIR Slam on order. coundt resits. excited and broke. hope it can run with my oldschool 12900 cpu. coming from Q3 would it be possible / not too much to ask to have some first starter bullet-points mentioned how to run the mod with Pimax Dream Air? main settings / adjustments? like plug in and what next? kind of summary of main important first steps and what to consider that would be awesome :)
Turn off quad views and sharpening to 0. Try out pimax Evo and Sboys3 steam VR driver, this will make your dream air a steam VR headset and will make Luke's framework pretty much seamless for all the games.
Could the expansion of the PPD Slider to go to 50 PPD be considered in the future? I do understand we can manually edit the reavr.ini to force 40-50 PPD, but I'm having issues where I want to dynamically adjust the PPD in game. It's a 1st-world problem for sure. Thanks for the consideration. Perhaps someone else might agree.
Yup, Luke said he will bump it up to 50 on the next release if I remind him :) but only if expert mode is enabled, because of VRAM throttling.
I saw it work once🤣 can you do sekiro please? 🙏
Am I wrong to think REAL yields more performance with Meta runtime? Been using VD recently and for these games the frames a bit less there. Not the a crazy difference but with Meta Cable Link feels slightly better.
Have you tried using your cable with VD yet? It is now an option after the recent update. I haven't tried yet but I saw a YouTube video up about how it is better with the cable now.
what is the recommendation here again ? Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling ON or OFF on a 5090 ?
On seems to work best for REAL, but some people say it doesn't for them. So you will have to test :)
I own an RTX 4090 SuprimX and don't regret the investment, especially since the 5090 has subsequently been almost out of reach without breaking the bank! I'm patiently waiting for the 6090 so the generational leap is actually worth it, though I wonder if there's even a chance of getting one, given that it'll be snapped up the moment it launches. Plus, I'm worried it'll be reserved for a wealthy elite.
Can you make a VR mod for the game Dying Light 2?
I agree on this because I Believe the beast runs on the same engine just a better game
Luke I know what you mean about the heat in summer cooking my precious PC. It's been a mega heatwave here in the UK so have had to play at night in my sweaty Psvr2. To add we don't have Aircon either. Never thought I would say this but I'm looking forward to winter just so I can catch up on all these awesome games🥵
Yeah, it gets in the 90's regularly here in the summer, sometimes the 100s. I have a portable AC hooked up in my room just for gaming 😒
Suggestion: I would love to be able to shrink the 'screen' down so instead of taking up your entire FOV, instead it's a smaller amount and looks like a TV screen. Would help for high end games when you want to render at lower resolutions but it wouldn't look as blurry when blown up in your face and zoomed in so much. Also might help the motion sick folks.. helps feel like it's a TV screen anchored in space with the game inside, some of the room isn't moving. Would help with menus that are hard to read because they are stuck in the corner of your view even as you move your head to look around.
there's an option in the menu to force a 2D screen
Thanks Brandon! I have one suggestion. When you reduce the FOV and you get black bars, is it possible to fill that black space with edge stretching or some other filling method (i.e. Ambilight) ? It would be perceived as a bigger FOV.
Edge stretching is very distracting. Your brain keeps telling you "something weird is happening just outside your focus area, let's check what that is, there might be danger". Something like a very blurred version of the main view might work, but when for instance a YouTube video does that (like when a portrait video is embedded in an out-of-focus landscape frame) I cannot say that I like the effect. I very much prefer black which is easy to tune out quickly.
Brandon you rock 🤘🏻 man!!! The duo with Luke that make VR magic possible!!! You missed us a lot! And trust it when I say it : you are very good at what you do! Don’t let us three month and take back the monthly video!!!! 🤘🏻🙏🤘🏻🙏
