Where do we go from here, part 2
Thank you guys, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for all the kind words of encouragement and for your support in the face of adversity.
Today I want to talk about something that feels very important to me. I know it's a highly controversial matter, so in a sense I will be fanning the flames; but it's crucial to the work I've been doing during these years, and understanding whether I'm right or wrong on this point is fundamental for me to be able to decide whether to continue this journey or not.
I love VR. I love the immersion it brings. Before VR became accessible to ordinary people, thanks to the efforts of the Oculus team first and John Carmack next, I already used to love 3D. I would watch all the 3D movies that came out in theaters (maybe with some exceptions for ultra-cheap post-conversions), and before playing a videogame I would always wait until a 3D Vision fix became available.
VR was the next step, and boy what a giant leap it was. Everything drawn at the proper scale. Having to crane your neck up to stare at huge monsters while you were fighting them, instead of looking at them rescaled to just a few inches tall to make them fit a monitor window. Being surrounded by the game world, instead of gazing at it through a glass pane.
I also loved Grand Theft Auto V, one of the most realistic titles back when it came out on PC. I really wanted to have that experience in VR. I tried my best to make existing solutions work, but the results were meh. So I spent an insanely large amount of time (time carved out from both my work as a freelance developer and from my personal life) to create my own VR mod for the game.
Yes, back then it was actually a VR mod. With a custom renderer, custom shaders, custom scripts, the works. Nowadays the situation is very different; having to support more and more disparate games and engines, I gradually moved away from the mod paradigm and toward a framework where most of the code is game-agnostic, with a comparatively small part of the codebase devoted to analyze the game (and engine) in real time and interface with it in order to get the results I need, like for instance freeing up the camera and pointing it in the direction the user is facing.
It was a gradual evolution, and by character I always tend to concentrate too much on the technical aspects and the quality of the experience, as opposed to focusing on covering my own ass on the legal and PR fronts, so I just continued to call them "mods", which I realize now has probably been a silly mistake.
Anyway during these past seven years, from my GTA V mod back in 2019 up to the present day, I've always had one clear objective in mind. You might call it my "mission" if you want.
The objective was to have game developers, studios and publishers realize that making their AAA titles fully playable in VR, with the incredible immersion and memorable experience that only being "inside" the game can give, is EASY. I mean, seriously? If one person can do it in a year or so of their free time (or in a few weeks when working full time), without any access to the game assets or to the engine source code, how hard can it be for the actual developing team?
I have been shouting that from every rooftop, and so have you, the people who believe in my work and appreciated and enjoyed it. We have been showing and telling.
But seven years is a long time. It's about 20% of an average person working life. I don't think it makes sense to postpone the inevitable conclusion any further.
I'm afraid it's time to call the mission a failure. Developers, studios and publishers... Just. Don't. Care.
And the bigger they are, the less they care.
After the exchange that I documented in my previous post, culminating in the hate-fest on X, I wrote again to CDPR on Feb 13, once more asking for a win-win cooperation. Ten days have gone by with no reply at all. They just don't care.
You'll remember that after the DMCA strike I published one last version of my R.E.A.L. VR software with support to Baldur's Gate 3, which went largely unnoticed because all the attention was on the CP 2077 demise. The few people who commented on it were for the most part fervently wishing that Hasbro would teach me a good lesson and sue me out of existence.
Well, on Jan 26 I wrote the following email to Michael Douse, publishing director at Larian Studios:
Hello Michael,
I am Luke Ross, the author of R.E.A.L. VR, a software that allows gamers to experience AAA titles in fully immersive virtual reality, while keeping gameplay as close as possible to the original.
As you might know, CD PROJEKT recently issued a DMCA takedown against my software, after almost 4 years in which Cyberpunk 2077's fans greatly enjoyed it:
"Cyberpunk 2077 in VR is UNBELIEVABLE": https://youtu.be/YQ_qsSLk54s
"The Correct Way To Play Cyberpunk 2077": https://youtu.be/NJa2YBxqu5g
"The BEST VR game…that isn’t a VR game": https://youtu.be/q02UCNXLJY8
"CYBERPUNK 2077 VR on a 4090 is MINDBLOWING": https://youtu.be/dYHhVfcaXFA
Following the DMCA notice, while waiting to know Patreon's official stance on the matter, I temporarily paused my Patreon page and removed the download links, which also affects the latest extension I had made to my framework in order to support Baldur's Gate 3.
You can see the conversion being played here for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I014Zs5_Deg
I am writing to inquire about your thoughts on the matter. I usually try to contact publishers when a new conversion is released, and I did the same four years ago with CD PROJEKT (details available on request). So I was very surprised when they issued a DMCA notice out of the blue, after years of silence.
If you're at least marginally interested in VR, maybe we can work something out to allow people to play your spectacular game from inside its beautiful virtual world. I can provide you, or any members of your staff, with instructions and software to run the conversion internally if you would like to see it in action.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Luke
I bet all of you can guess what kind of answer I got. Zero. Zilch. Nada.
That was exactly four weeks ago. On Jan 29 I wrote a second time, again asking for Michael's opinion and adding that I was ready to have the discussion under NDA if necessary.
No response.
On Feb 8 I sent the same letter to Artem Titov, Head of Gameplay. And lo and behold, this time I got...
... no response.
They just don't care.
Where do we go from here?

Over the years, we've learned SO much from talking and working with many of the largest AAA Studios. I wish I could say messaging studios like that is how you can reach them, but it just doesn't work that way. Would love to have a call with you Luke Ross if you were interested. It's been a long journey, but we now have a relationship with many of the largest AAA studios (that relationship part is really important and it doesn't happen over emails). Just wanted to mention that since you were feeling discouraged. There is a way for all this, but we've had to build out a lot of infrastructure and business relationships first before getting this far. Would love to jump on a call any time to talk more!
We should all request refunds for cyberpunk since it's not VR anymore and that's the only reason we bought it.
With the Pimax Dream Air soon relasing as a gamechanger for VR, it's time for the developers to get with the program and take a f.... hint! I will no longer support or buy AAA titles unless they support VR..... or there's a mod.
We live in an era of grey zones where industries can farm innovation through mods and fan made content, and then shut them down when they get an arbitrary level of coverage. The stipulations on allowable funding are murky and oftentimes unfair from a larger moral standpoint. I'm just grateful to have participated in VR during such a period, as I can easily see a future where companies instantly shut down frameworks like REAL, UEVR, DolphinVR or VorpX through automated tools. Regardless of the outcome of this debacle, I'm grateful to Luke after playing most of the supported games in VR.
I'm a pretty chill guy but this...this is what infuriates me. The gaming industry completely ignoring the medium for years, and then getting upset when someone else acts on their neglect and contempt. And all that after you tried to implement VR with them to begin with! Hypocrisy. The best way to experience these AAA worlds is through a VR headset. Period. Your software needs to exist. Perhaps rebrand your framework as a VR viewing engine, like Vorpyx(except functional) and then release modules for your software that allow future titles to be added. Keep the Patreon open for support because we'd all miss Brandon's wisdom :)
And perhaps my teasers 🙃
Hey Luke, you’ve gotta move forward, forget Cyberpunk and Ghostrunner, there are so many games out there just waiting for you. I know I’m repeating myself, but I’m not going to stop my Patreon support for you. You’ve given us the chance to play our favorite games in VR and honestly, I probably would never have bought those games if they’d stayed flat…
I definitely would never have bought a 4090, 5090 or most of my headsets.
Luke, I think you've nailed the uncomfortable part: big publishers follow ROI and risk, and VR is still niche, so VR support usually reads as "extra engineering + QA + support" without a clear payoff. That's exactly why people value what you've built: without independent work like yours, a lot of these AAA worlds simply won't be experienced in VR at all. Whatever you decide, thank you for pushing the medium forward and I hope there's a path that keeps you protected while still serving the community.
The ironic thing is, the reason VR isn’t doing well is, I think, that it doesn’t have a ready supply of new, long form games. People aren’t going to spend hundreds on a headset, and possibly thousands on a gaming pc and then play games that wow them for about 10 hours. They want something that will give them 30, 40 or more hours of gameplay, and possibly with a decent story line. I think we need someone like cd project red or rockstar to officially support vr, even if it’s just the headset (after all, using vr controllers really requires gameplay changes). We also need a big studio to develop vr specific software. Initially, meta offered that. But then they pivoted into horizon worlds, and have now essentially written that off.
Game companies are keeping quiet about VR because they lack the knowledge to develop VR games. Few people understand how to create VR games, and you're one of those rare people, Luke.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fl2XYCSfMI&t=1s O'l Luke Ross, well...... He's the M*ther F*cking man! You will always be the VR Modfather to me 🥺
it is just one, old game. one of the best in VR but old. Amazing new ones are coming in hot! why was it not handled more or less quietly like when RDR2/GTV/MAFIA was blacklisted, so what - we all know you cant reason with them as they dont give a damn about VR following - everyone moved on from it, those who knew how to roll back still play these titles until today , same with cyberpunk we all have the mod and the last version of CP and all works. why the cry out. just keep going 39 games work flawlessly and 61+++ games coming I am sure. so you lose some die hard only CP fans subs, so what. Majority of us is here for the long run and ever new experiences. Some will cry about CP but tears dry and the ones who really want continue playing it will do so. I dont see really why all escalted stupidly like it did on the world stage - there was not really need for that. . Its your lifework so you have to keep going and we follow. You dont quit the war just because of a knee shot.
Well.....actually........ you can get medically evacuated from the war zone for something like that and be out of the war for who knows how long. Possibly for good, depending on the damage and potential disability 😉 I do get what you are trying to say though 😁
All I know is you made something amazing that no one else did as well, I didn't like paying every update but I must say I would pay again for the experience you created, it's amazing and crucial to my vr fav list. Even without motion controls. I wish these companies would work with you it could start a revolution in vr. Figure something out you got me as a fan and I cross my fingers there is a way your hard work can keep providing me a great experience. Good luck there is always a way.
Dude, you are m***ing rockstar, thousands of developers would love to be in your shoes and own this trail-blazed path thus far. Steel yourself and push forward, you got what it takes.
I'm glad to see you mention that the term "mod" is inaccurate and part of the trouble! I've been focused on that point from the start of it. As for the publishers, they are not going to add vr modes, full stop, period. They're not here to make niches happy. They're here to sell to the maximum market size with the maximum growth potential, that represents the largest quarterly value potential to investors. The pcvr communituy owning high end gpus is so tiny that even if they could guarantee sales of $200 copies of the games to every single one of us, it still wouldn't be worth their while. Even Sony was unable to convince them to. And our community is far smaller with far less growth potential than Sony. Realistically for vr to be an appealing market to them flat2vr would have to have at LEAST as big an install base as Xbox Series consoles. And even Xbox has to pay to get support from some of them. We will not see that in our lifetime. Ultimately the status quo of PlayStation, Nintendo, and steam flat is all they need and all the growth they need until they can move it to the cloud and make it all subscription. And vr moves them in the wrong direction for that goal. No, if we want vr, it'll have to come from the community, from efforts like this. It'll never be a big business. It's what it is but that's why so many of us have been so happy with what you've been accomplishing and hope for it to continue sustainably, or go open if it's to be left behind.
I'm not sure is it to be continued or if it's fairwell? "I don't think it makes sense to postpone the inevitable conclusion any further.", but then "[To be continued]" I'm subbing x10. If it's goodbye I'm making good my appreciation. DONT GO Luke!
I think you are right - but big game studios wont see it your way right away. I think that there could be a meaningful shift in that direction with Valve releasing the Steam Frame soon and their marketing that is geared towards using a VR headset to play existing flat games. With a such a huge company pushing that idea its bound to make waves. Sure their marketing is just about a virtual flat screen for now - but the hardware has motion controls and 3d capabilities it would be absurd to not put that to use on as many games as possible, and there are way more flat games than VR. So basically I think that yes you are right and what you have created has pioneered a movement that I think will eventually happen.
Luke, Im sure you've considered all financial options to keep this worth your time so any suggestion I make probably won't be novel. However, what if RealVR going forward was free but ONLY paid Patreons could "Have a vote" in what title you implemented next? As well, in order to encourage continued subscriptions, Veteran Patreons could have Tier'd votes. For example a full year Patreon would have two votes instead of one, a two year Patreon would have 3 votes, and so on. Perhaps a branded T-shirt or mug after a certain period. Things like that. Just trying to think of ways you could keep doing this, stay out of DCMA's and it not only be worth your time but also profitable.
So, would I get like 100 votes?
I was exactly the same, I played absolutely everything in 3D and was damned annoyed when nVidia stopped releasing the 3DVision drivers with Video card drivers. Thats why I never liked ATI cards. the next logical step was VR - but i only got into that because I'm such a huge Half-life fan and there was no way I was not going to play Alyx! Never quit mate - VR is one of my passions and there just isnt enough around to keep me playing for those 2 hours a day. Its modders like you that are helping keep VR alive. If bloody valve would stop dragging their feet and release HL3 which I'm sure has to be in VR that would help but they are too busy scraping in millions on the back of game sales like CP2077.
Well, since these game companies don’t care about VR gamers, then why should we care about them? Looks like I won’t be paying for their games anymore. 🏴☠️
Hey Luke, I can see how disheartening all this has been and all of us here are gonna support you regardless because most of us all feel the exact same way about vr and 3D and you have been the man for years to prove it’s possible to convert and fuckkng oath has it made a difference. There’s probably at least 50 people at cdpr payroll that exclusively play in c77 in VR. This is just a case of someone being a greedy mf and the internets toxic cancel culture raging again. Yes the hate sucks, but no one has sued you yet because technically you aren’t breaking any copyright laws, change the wording the framework, vorpx has done it for years and no one bats an eye Don’t let the noise get to ya mate these are just hurdles. The internet is a toxic disgusting place but I just imagine all the haters are just lex Luther’s monkey army spamming the feeds lol I believe VRs moment is still around the corner and Luke Ross deserves to be there when it does
As I reflect on your post, I get the feeling that you are already moving in the right direction. I believe and hope that we can look forward to your next post on this topic.
I sure hope your feeling is right 🤞 I vote for one more year!
1. I hope you don't quit what you are doing. Your mods are great and they accompanied me the last years. I had the best gaming experiences ever, especially with CP2077 but lots of other games to... TLOU, Horizon Series, Avatar, .... 2. I will support you even if it goes to free donations... 3. After all I've read in your latest posts and speaking as true edgerunner: Fuck those corpos !!! They don't give a shit about gamers. All they are interested in is their profit.
My heart really goes out to you in all of this Luke. I’m sorry you’ve faced so much hate and backlash for doing something you’re so passionate about which brings joy to so many people. It’s wild to me some of these responses you’ve been getting, although, the homophobic and racist slurs they’ve been using should show you the type of character these people have, which will hopefully help you put it in perspective how much to care about their perspective (I know that’s not easy of course though). It’s definitely less wild to see these actions or lack there of from these massive soulless corporations though. It’s so sad than even though you are literally improving everyone’s lives here they have zero interest to even give you a smidgeon of respect. I’m really surprised to hear this from Larion. I thought they might be different… keep your head up man. We love what you’re doing. That said, don’t sacrifice your own mental health if it’s no longer something you want to do. I’m wishing you the best and sending some positive vibes to your heart. Also, everyone should have a therapist. Get one if you don’t have one ;). Cheers mate.
I guess the problem remains, being in a position where you have to beg for big IPs to look in your direction is not going to work, even if you have bags of cash and a team of contract lawyers to throw at the offer like Meta. You cannot force the issue on this. If you're working in isolation, there are going to be hard limits to how much you're going to be able to contribute to the scene. Real solutions to the long term outlook for VR look like what the Flat2VR studio is attempting to do, though even there it is clearly rough sailing. If a company like Valve was willing to work in a very public way with VR modders / professional conversion teams that would be tremendous. What you've accomplished on your own is still highly valuable, i.e. keeping people interested in the space has driven hardware and software sales alike and helped boost the vitality of the scene. That in and of itself is a cause worth pursuing even if you have to refactor your business model. But in terms of maximizing impact on the industry, I think you would need to partner up with other players in the space who are aligned on the same goals that you have. The community response is distressing and short sighted, but it is a response and you need to be careful about driving a wedge further between yourself and the people that compose the VR audience. In that respect I think you're sending the wrong emails to the wrong people. Corporate entities at scale don't care, so who does? How can you work with like minded individuals to make progress for the current VR foundations being built? etc. You've likely thought on this side of it a lot as well, but in terms of the current conflict I'm mostly just pointing out that this is a pretty hard line between individual contributions and organized networking and what scales they can operate on.
They might not care (yet), but we do. As long as we have this community, which largely consists of very supportive people, it is worth pushing on. Eventually it will grow enough for even those scumbags to care and finally realize that this is the future of VR, not the idiotic mobile game equivalents that they try selling on Meta. Maybe try cooperating with Steam instead, perhaps they'll be interested in making it more universal and could help with the legal and maybe financial aspects (in exchange for a chance of boosting Steam Frame sales, I guess). But in any case, I'm sure there are many ways to resolve this (VorpX approach, for one), so from here we can indeed go forward!
One more thing... Sorry but it's so interesting... You didn't fail at anything... The system has failed us... Big difference. People like you create and maintain VR culture.
Well, AAA studios are failing pretty hard lately 😂 Maybe the rise in indie gaming will lead to better VR outcomes 🤞
Its bullshit. Playing these full complete titles in vr is actually life changing. Its a damn shame the companies chose to be this way. Ive been happy to support your work and you deserve to be paid for your time and effort for the benefit you've brought to the community.
I wish I would have played the mods more when I had the chance too. I want to play them badly.
It's good to hear you talking about your love for VR. It puts this all in a much more positive light. I think the way you respond has a huge impact on the types of people and the perspectives that react to you. It's clear that this kind of work should continue, as anyone that has experienced these games knows this is the future of entertainment we're peaking at... and we need it to expand from here. I don't understand why more games haven't started supporting VR, but then I don't understand why there's still PC games coming out with only keyboard and mouse support. Clearly there's still a large number of users and developers stuck in the past and it's going to take a long time for an industry this big to evolve. But that's why efforts like this need to exist, to lead the way. I'm sorry that this has been so rough on you, but hopefully you can find a way to enjoy the process, keep it positive and stay in touch with the reasons you are doing it in the first place.
Luke, thank you for all of the amazing experiences. Cyberpunk 2077 VR in particular is an eye-opening piece of art that is my favorite gaming experience of all time and re-ignited my love of video games when I first played it at 31 years old (...and I only play on a 4060 with a Quest 2 that I spent many, many hours tweaking to playability). The battle against CORPO scum you are in now would make Johnny Silverhand proud and I feel you deserve a reference in a lore shard in the next game as a member of the BARTMOSS COLLECTIVE for these efforts. Your mod is the only reason I have CP a chance. Be strong! Your work has tremendous value.
You definitely should have an LLC and a lawyer, as others have suggested. And, as another comment suggested, change the marketing to make it sound more like Reshade, UEVR or VorpX and don't mention specific games. If you do that, you should even be able to bring back CP2077 and Ghostrunner. And, whatever you do STOP SENDING EMAILS!
Yeah. Luke needs a mute button t this point. Maybe needs to talk to a friend and listen to HIS community instead of ignoring all of us.
"I'm afraid it's time to call the mission a failure. Developers, studios and publishers... Just. Don't. Care." WTF, can you imagine Alan Turing saying his machine was I failure because 7 years after he did it the were no computers ? The world is not ready for VR, only some visionaries, but you are making history, this will be remembered. Zuck with all his millions wasn't able to make an official GTASAVR... you made an unnoficial GTA5VR for free !!!!!
Did you try reaching those people using other means of communication? LinkeIn, Social Media, People in the industry that you know, who may know them?
you really need to relax and think clearly about the direction your are moving with the project , poking the bear is what you are doing , by putting more bad attention towards this small scene , you are risking attention form worse companies not just on you but the others in the scene and putting this community at a big risk
He's not putting "bad attention" towards this small scene. The small scene is getting bad attention because the bears are assholes that need to be destroyed, not capitulated to.
I think you need to make a general user interface that is outside the games. It seems to be what makes it "ok" for VorpX to charge money. Makes it more obvious that it is an independent framework and not a mod for each game. It doesn't matter what it -is-, it matters what people think it is. They don't have to be right to squish you, they just have to want to. Those of us that patron you full-time are very aware that what you are doing is worth our money. Do whatever it is you need to do to protect yourself first, then if you still feel up to it, keep up the good work of helping us realise our dreams. And maybe take on some apprentices. Would be nice for the future if more people learned your methods. If one guy can do this much, a team of people could make something impossible to ignore. Once you are protected, of course.
I think VR conversion software like yours has changed the industry, although much more slowly than you appreciate. A perfect example is the upcoming Steam Frame controller design; it’s like a regular game pad. VR games are too expensive to build natively, however, I think Steam knows that the experience you provided is the future of hybrid VR/PC gaming and one that AAA developers will eventually fall behind. It’s still going to take time for the market for such experiences becomes generally known. It’s just too expensive for the general public at this point, and the set up has been less than plug and play on PC. Time will prove you right as the technology becomes more affordable and easier to use.
Honestly, I completely HATE most games that use motion controls, especially when they're both bad and forced like in No Man's Sky. I'd much rather play Skyrim VR with a gamepad (unless I'm using my Katwalk for exercise).
Im not sure if you're writing these emails yourself but id highly recommend hiring a lawyer becuase they would really help you get around all the legal stuff when making these mods that are not mods. A lawyer would also be able to contact the right people and the legal team should take you more seriously as you sound more legit. Reason I recommend this is because my family has been in court three times over various things (none of them criminal) and from my experience, unless you know how to play the legal game, people that can and do know it grind you under their heel whenever they can or they ignore you. As you've been experiencing.
Maybe create a corporation and pay yourself? Huge bonuses of course. Then your personally a seperate entity independent from Real VR? Take most of the money and expenses? What would Johnny Silver Neo do? Fight corpo with corpo?
And yet somehow there are conpanies that do manage to partner with CDPR for paid MODS, such as the spatial audio mod: embody immerse gamepack x cyberpunk 2077. They are perfectly willing to broker deals with developers, so long as it isnt about VR. Because big studios only hate one thing: VR. Why? Who knows. Maybe they think its a fad. Maybe they dont like how it makes some people sick. Maybe the hardware requirements are unreasonable. But whatever the reason, it seems like they hate VR, and any time they dip their toes in they pussyfoot around it to make a game thats far too "comfortable" ei: bad.
Hello LUKE, We can all appreciate how much your work deserves compensation and understand the need to defend access to VR because it's fantastic. My contribution to your Patreon isn't about paying for a product that lets me play in VR, but also about supporting the idea of promoting this magnificent immersive tool and thus continuing to spread the word that VR is amazing and that the game development world would be missing out on a showcase technology that demonstrates what's possible and thrills gamers. Switching to a free version wouldn't prevent me from continuing to contribute in the same way and might even allow me to reach a wider audience. I'm sure many here already think so. I'm quite old-school, and I don't understand how people can get so worked up reading social media. It's an unrestrained outpouring of all kinds of ideas from every segment of the population (children, villains, heroes, lunatics, bots, trolls, etc.). I don't pay any attention to it and even think it should be mandatory to log in to use it with your real name. Luke, it's time to take a break!
Im no expert. But can't you go back to making VR mods and concentrate on much older games? Doesn't look like you will be able to continue without the support of today's developers. What ever you do you have my support. I was able to build a small YouTube channel thanks to your GTA5 mod. Which is still the best VR experience i have ever had. So I will always be thankful to you for that. What ever you decide, you will always be a Legend 👍
The worst part of this nonsense is that Luke isn’t even emailing the right people. Wizards of the coast is responsible for Baldurs Gate 3. Larien is just the developer. They have no say whatsoever about it. Luke u need to stop as even your supporters are turning away. I’m so sad with this situation as I also came from 3d vision days and love 3d and vR
wotc are notorious for suing people over the smallest things , it appears that luke wants to burn the whole vr mod scene to the ground than compromise a tiny bit at this point
It may have been a failure if the only goal was to get publishers to make official VR versions, but for most of your patreon suppporters, their goal is just to play games in VR however they can get them. In support of that goal, have you considered changing the way you market this to be a generic framework like UEVR or Vorpx that can be still under the Patreon, then just let the user community explain which applications work with it? It does make it harder for newbies, but would prevent any specific DCMA as no particular IP would be advertised. You could even have free profiles advertised elsewhere, such as a web site, so that the main patreon page only has framework updates, and the profile just requires a certain version number of the framework to work.
why the need to prolong this i dont understand , is a straight answer on the future of the project too hard , does brandon know , does god know lol this is really silly man
Hi Luke. I've been subscriber since a few years ago, for a few months at a time. I was thinking about writing to you since this issue with the Cyberpunk mod happened, but thought you wouldn't read it in the midst of the storm. As you've now asked for feedback, I'd like to give you my two cents (and bear in mind I've paid the subscription fee just for this). I think the potential scenario of giving up work on the Real VR mod and retiring the mod permanently from circulation is a lose-lose situation, where the party taking the most damage is precisely the VR enthusiast community (that I'm part of) that you've helped build. I think it would go against the very reason you've done this work for (apart from trying to make a living out of it). It's clear big corporations aren't going to bend the knee to an individual, so I think it's worthless to keep a crusade against them, trying them to attend to your reason, etc. This outcome doesn't overall affect their numbers, so I don't think the really care if the mod still exists or not. To be practical and avoid to keep going through more grief on this, I would change your business model to one of donations indeed for the mods with takedown notices, and leave the rest in Patreon. I appreciate this is a big change as it would mean you would need to do this work as a professional side-activity rather than a full-time job, but this would help you make peace with the communicy, still work on your fantastic mod albeit at a slower pace and, most importantly, it would let all VR enthusiast to still keep enjoying your mod. Real VR have been a game changer and affected many people's lifes positively. For many of us, getting into these games in VR, thanks to your mod, eases the days during rought times as lets one get transported into another reality for a while, leaving everything else aside. I think keeping the mod, at a pace that viable in terms of time and money (considering now it wouldn't be your main source of income) should be in the front line of any decision you make at this point. Otherwise, if things keep as they are today, everybody loses (but the game studios, who don't care one way or the other).
I'm sceptik, why give your job to guys who spited on you? Community decide now ? None of one who ask free mod 'll never did what LR did. My two cents , keep your work, it's precious time and effort , find another way to be a full time dev on flat to Vr . We need ppl like you, and 12 dollars time to time is nothing for this. Try to ignore the haters, very vocals but a minority.
I think right now I did about three full VR playthroughs with CP and I absolutely love it. But I think it is wrong to put all the blame onto the corporations, for the simple reason, that the implementation of "full" VR support is an absolute PITA and money pit. It pretty much requires the game to be designed that way from the very beginning. The only AAA game delivering that is HL Alyx. I lay the blame totally on all those shameless users who always cry for "full" VR support, so they can jump through their rooms with those ridiculous controllers. They have absolutely no clue, that right now this is the main problem of every VR implementation, as these controllers are a severe limitation to the tools you can give the player. It is no accident, that HLA uses only one handed tools and weapons, since the use of something like rifle with those controllers is just utter crap and cant be called immersive by any means. And even one handed ironsights in HLA are shit, it only gets acceptable with the laser sights. The developers understood very well, that VR controller implementation is something between tough, expensive and impossible. And even if you do it reasonable, people will still complain, because their own cheap equipment happens to be crap but they blame the game and its developers anyway. From the very beginning people should have understood, that is it relatively easy an low cost for a developer to enable stereoscopic view. But I can't recall any prominent voice having called just for that. Instead almost every time some developers mention to consider VR, the usual suspects start crying for full VR support, when it would be appropriate to be just satisfied with headset-support and nothing else. Would the VR community have been patient enough to accept just that, maybe even only via a developer mode to be enabled via console, I claim, that we would by now have far more games, especially AAA titles that would offer that possibility. Now thanks to Luke we got that minimalistic and reasonable approach via his mod and I am very grateful for that. But it was only the second best solution and now ran into problems, that could be expected from the beginning and will throw back VR even farther. So sad.
The unfortunate reality is that there’s a steep hill to climb for the VR experience: better hardware, building your VR “legs”, working through technical issues, etc. For those of us who get it, that hill is well worth the climb. In my house there are 3 gamers. I’m the only one who “gets it”. For corpos it’s basically profitability margins. They don’t think climbing that hill is worth it contrary to what we may think. If I were in your shoes, I would diversify your platform risk by keeping Patreon, but starting up another platform like SubscribeStar or a Discord membership. Keep charging like you do and when a game studio complains, drop the game. If you get booted from Patreon then you continue on your secondary platform. As long as you keep supporting and providing these VR experiences, I will absolutely keep supporting your efforts monetarily in whatever way you choose to go and I know I’m not alone in this. Please find a way forward if possible.
I think charging for Cyberpunk using another platform would run into the same issue.
I give all my support and I hope things get better for you. Also, I want really bad to replay bg3 in VR xD
I have Pimax Crystal and I can’t wait to build my gaming pc to use VR.Cyberpunk 2077 for me is the game of the games and for me this cracks and errors and blaming the game is bulshit coming from people lives in Stone Age I don’t know why they even exist .I think you Luke Ross are amazing person, who try to help CDPR by making Cyberpunk 2077 in VR,because of that you also boost their game to sell more and I’m pissed by their answer to you.PEOPLE STOP SABOTAGING CYBERPUNK 2077.I hope you win
I'm professionally familiar with all that kind of crap you're facing right now. I guess I might have at least a bit of an idea what you're going through. It hits even harder when not only your work (built up over years) is at stakes, but also this work (and outstanding expertise) is denied / fought against / hated while it's based on a truly, undoubted, well-spirited mission that is literally a win win situation for everybody. It's a kind of black swan event happening here, and we all hope, that you know how firm we stand behind you. You can't beat Corpos on their turf. Go undercover and use your list of us subscribers to provide what we love is much the 'direct-way'. God bless you!
Yeah corporate dont care, they have a lot of money and dont play the games themselves. The people who care are us, your patreons. Remember who you are doing this for. Us, not them. Hoping to see more great conversions from you. I will pay for pateron even if the mods were to be released freely as i support the vision.
Oh and I forgot to add, you threaten these companies because of the balance of power you represent... Doesn't matter what value you bring... They won't accept a contractor inside of their insect hive ..
Did you write directly to Michał Nowakowski of CD PROJEKT — michal.nowakowski@cdprojekt.com? He's the CEO — work around all the idiots in the way, contact the top directly. There must be someone in that organization that is not a complete fucking idiot. Here are the emails of the two founders: marcin.iwinski@cdprojekt.com and adam.kicinski@cdprojekt.com — and if you don't write to them maybe readers here can write them to tell them what they think of their fucking corpo. And as a side note, I am one of those people who bought a PCVR system (PC + 5080 + MQ3) to play YOUR mod of CP2077 — and I thank you for it wholeheartedly. You converted a fucking PC game into a work of art — an experience! On a flat screen their game is just another stupid game, yet with your VR mod it is a thing to be preserved as a culturally significant work of art.
I also have been wondering why game devs don't care about adding VR to their games. Obviously it would make them more money by selling more copies of game for the ppl that only want VR games but they could even make the VR support be an additional dlc cost. I think the whole issue with cp2077 is due to them officially started working on cp2077 part2 so that's why they never cared about your work until now. They maybe planning on adding VR support for part2
Agreeeeeeee
Luke, please listen to Brandon! Or find a close business minded friend for advice. Emotions and business to not go hand in hand.
Would love to hear Brandon's thoughts. Was that in yesterday's thread?
Forgive my naivety but could you not make the game specific installer part (and whatever else is game specific) free but have your framework and renderer that doesn’t use any copyrighted material the paid component? It makes the free part useless without the paid part and also skirts the DMCA stuff.
The way they look at it is anything that alters their game must be totally free. If you get a part for free then need to pay for rest then that makes it NOT totally free to run.
Im so confused now. Why does Larien need to respond to you about Baldurs Gate 3? Did they issue a dmca? Or threaten to? Are u suggesting that u will be seeking permission before every fix now, because that’s not a good strategy as most developers just don’t care enough to respond or even know what you’re talking about. Less then 1% of gamers will even try Baldirs Gate 3 in vr. They just don’t indoor care unfortunately. If u plan on waiting to be validated by every developer then u might as well close shop. This is sad on every level.
I believe Luke wanted to point out that developers just don't care about implementing VR.
They don't care because the corporate world is literally insane... Literally.. not some metaphor.. the never ending search for more profits (equaling the mass inflation we experience constantly).. each year has to be bigger than the last, which is the definition of unsustainable. This of course puts the customer as a hunted target not as an equal. The delegation of major business models is so fractured and massive, that each unit has to justify its own existence without any regard for end users. The greed and animal Insticts that are hijacked in this persuit leads to a jungle not a society. It's a confirmation bias that I believe will encourage the apocalypse eventually if there is no room for humanity in wealth accumulation. Peoples instics are reverting so fast that all the warning signs pale in comparison to the immediate reward... A reward that will leave the world empty of anything worth even buying, seeing or participating in until the average person is so discouraged they will legalize self deleting lol (don't mean to be so dramatic lol)
Thank you for what you do Luke. I think you're doing the right thing by contacting the publisher even if you don't hear back. I can see both sides of the issue and I agree that publishers don't and won't care about VR until the number of users are higher or they are subsidized by a console/headset maker.
Man losing your VR framework is definitely going to suck. I always looked forward to your next game support. I wish you could continue it with donations, but I definitely understand if it takes too much of your time and you won't be a be to afford it off donations alone. I think we can see where this going though, sounds like you are ready to hang it up. I hope I'm wrong, but it sounds like this is where it's going.
Dude, package up a core "software interface" with the common code that you sell. Give away the files unique to each game.
Yeah. This has been suggested many times. And would work. Just hosting the game files separately, away from patreon. Luke just doesn’t listen.
Makes me wonder they picked on you personally , I pay for a service every month no different that supplys me with mods for cyberpunk , of which many of the mods would be far more objective (nudity etc) , and also pay another service ever month which allows me to cheat in any game I wish pretty much, yet Project red has no issues with them no dcma takedowns etc
Your mission was not a complete failure. I showed your mods back then for multiple friends and they bought VR headsets because of your mods.
This is awesome. I also bought phantom liberty solely because I replayed CP2077 with the mod, and I just from comments on socials that a lot of people bought CP2077 just because of the mod. So it's literally made CDPR money, which is the crazy thing. I imagine it's pretty hard to tune out the hate when you feel under attack. But there are so many other people who support. Unfortunately gaming as a hobby in general has a lot of toxic individuals, but they're the ones who are too cheap to pay $10 a month for this awesome thing anyway. Anyway, my main point is that regardless of anything it's isn't a failure. I think we need to give Luke some time to figure out what he's going to do before writing it off as over. Have hope!
I still wonder if you could disconnect the main "engine" from any game-specific parts and then keep the engine here on Patreon but release the individual games as plugin mods for free?
I really hope he tries this. It makes no sense that he should have to go begging for permission to sell his own built-from-scratch conversion engine.
brus gonna post a harry potter seven book series rather than just post the mods for free and ignore any lawsuit requests. its what the vorpx guy did LOL jk he still has it paid but completely disregarded the lawsuits and put the bioshock games back up so hey either be ballsy or give us more lore i still appreciate the experience you provided
