Ambition is a risk (Final Geronimo update)

My Geronimo trip was a real mixed-bag. I failed to capture some places I wanted to, due to brutal roads my bike (and myself) couldn't handle. I also wonder if it was worth it. To film on location has been an ambition of mine for some time. There's the unfortunate fact that these locations are just not very visually interesting in a way that, say, filming in Mexico City would be. Yes, some beautiful natural places, but I do wonder if it was worth it, considering the time and expense involved. There is also the fact that Big Bend was far closer and is, itself, as visually spectacular as much of what I did film.

As the title says, ambition is a risk (ask Caesar). If I'd played this more safe, gone to Big Bend, had some nice mountains in the background, the final product may have been superior.

On a personal level, I'm very happy I did it. I wanted to gain a better sense of place. I did. I understand far better, seeing the Gila and Coronado National Forests, why the Apache fought so fiercely for them. In general, the landscape of the American West is truly spectacular. I've always been fascinated by contrast, and the contrast between the burning sun-scorched valleys and cool yet brutal mountain ranges is incredible. I'd be lying if I didn't say: I was sorta shopping for a place to live once I graduate school. I'm also happy I took my motorcycle, despite the incredible discomfort at points, and the fact that I almost flew right off a damn mountain one time.

I like to think you support me not only for what I have done, but for what I may be capable of doing with additional production time and resources. This has been a great learning experience, one I hope to build on next winter in Spain (stay tuned).

For now, the video itself:

I'm not sure if I can outdo my Blood Meridian video, but this is, at least, close. Certainly, the effort is on full-display. The unfortunate reality of this work is that effort does not always translate into quality. It would be hard to count to one million on camera, but it also wouldn't be entertaining. I think Gus Johnson did that once.

I certainly have a unique perspective on Geronimo. Throughout the video I attempt to untangle him from his reputation as a symbol of Native resistance, and try to treat him as an individual pushed by his paranoia and fear into a series of horrible mistakes. A literary comparison runs throughout, probably a bit of a curveball: Oedipus.

Thank you as always for your patience and support. This has been a long time coming, and you'll be seeing the return of some old props (say hello once-more to the CRT TV and Slide projector)

See you on the 21st,

DJ PC

Timeline split, the coolest cobbler flew off a cliff on a flaming motorbike, the second coolest went home to post a video I watched.

Don’t disappoint me cobbler. I’ve been waiting patiently, but seriously thank you for everything that you do on your videos and how much effort you put into it. I’ve been watching you for years and seeing you get to this point has been a fantastic experience. Keep trucking on.

When I started watching you, I was a sophomore in college I’m now a married man and a father. Every day, I wake up, wishing I could do what you do.

CANNOT WAIT MY GUY. The whole point of this subscription is for future stuff. Same reason for my other two Patreons subs really, I like access the the private content, but if I really wanted just that, I'd only sub when new stuff came out. I let this sub roll over, like my other 2 main ones, cause I want to see what yall will do. Same reason I sub to Dropout, I could pirate their stuff, but I wanna see what they'll do with my money. CRT TVs are the bomb, try running like Cyberpunk 2077 on it, if you mess with the settongs some, you can get some cool outcomes. If done right, it can look more photorealistic than a $3k high res OLED modern monitor. I've been meaning to find one it a thrift/charity store or something, there's a few games I'd like to try out on one... Like ZERO Sievert or ASHES 2063. I recon those would look great on a CRT.

I’m stoked to see this! Truthfully the Native American experience is one that I have been willfully ignorant of my entire life. I’ve seen them as nothing more than another of the type of evil, backwards, Canaanite tribal peoples who had to be destroyed for progress to, well, progress. Of course I was always aware of the crimes against humanity the Spanish and Americans committed against them but in the annals of history there’s nothing truer than “The strong do as they wish and the weak suffer what they must”. From that perspective the Conquistadores and US Army were noble civilizing influences dealing with a pernicious native pest. Your work has gone a long way toward my view on that changing. I’m a vet of Iraq (Army infantry) and as such I can respect any man regardless of the side who has the courage to stand and fight. Doubly so when the odds are so clearly stacked against them. It’s easy to fight a fight you know you’ll win, but not so much when defeat is assured. They fought us for the same reasons men of all times and places have fought, to protect hearth and kin, and for that I can respect them. Thank you. (All that said war is still a racket) P.S. Also love that you did it on a bike! How’d the classic 650 fare? Do ya wish you had picked up a Himalayan instead? lol!

We take risks like these not because we truly think there will be some miraculous pay off…but because we must. Like the song of the ocean or the call of adventure. Once the heart has been stirred and the thought has been planted we MUST go where our soul is called. Whether the artistic vision meets the final product is irrelevant. You heard the call, you followed the song, you walked the path, and you have returned to us with a boone. Looking forward to being blessed by you on the 21st. Whatever comes, your heart and soul will be on display. And we shall be eagerly awaiting to devour your offering! It is the only way to stave off the inevitable consumption by the void within. Glad you’re safe. Glad you made the trip. And glad you have returned to us to regale us with tales and entertainment.

I think worrying about the worth of your trip is natural, but I also think it ignores the value of what you gained from it personally. There is, of course, the enjoyment of going on a trip, but you gained an experience that meant something to you, and I believe that is very valuable. Also, I believe showing the place Geronimo fought for is worth more than showing a place similar to what Geronimo fought for. Even if that place makes for a slightly less appealing background.

As a botanist, I will appreciate you shooting on location. The plants in the background and in the b-roll footage will be meaningful to the sense of place for me. I'd notice if they were different ones. You're right that most people won't appreciate the reality of Place, but I wanted you to know I do. Thanks for your work man
