Blood Meridian is a Fairy Tale, actually
Once my current sponsorships run out (March 2026), I'm going to start doing 4 videos a year.
It's become clear that in order to reach my own standards, this has to happen. I'm finishing up my December video and am generally unhappy with its messiness. The problem is this: I wanted to make a video about Blood Meridian, Conquistadors, and the perils of fairy tales but that video's bibliography is going to be like 15 books long. I realized that I had to make a smaller video, very quickly, and the result is funny-enough but I fell back into some bad writing habits. Namely: I can't stay on-topic and the essay is too confusing for what it's trying to say. I think you'll be happy with it and there are parts I'm very happy with, but I could do better. I can see all the problems and I can't fix them.
I want to be diligent, and I want to write essays which tackle large, difficult subjects. You can't do that every month. The Patreon has grown, allowing me to dig myself out of debt and re-find my footing during a difficult year. Words cannot express how thankful I am for your support in this time, and I'm happy to say that YouTube, inexplicably and suddenly, re-monetized me.
I'm very tired of working non-stop only to not be happy with the result. I kept telling myself that I wasn't working hard enough but the reality has set in that I'm not giving myself enough time, which is ridiculous, because you already have. I don't want to burn bridges, in case YouTube demonetizes me again (they will), so I'm going to fulfill the contracts I've signed. Afterwards, Columbus.
It's clearly time for me to enter a different stage of my Youtube career, where I spend months on the kinds of videos that viewers (ideally) drop everything to tune into. Everything is getting frayed at the edges, I can't keep this up. It's not a matter of working too little, all I do is work. It's also not a matter of working too much, as the frustration lies in the end-product, how much better I know it could be if I just gave myself more time.
You'll see, with the Blood Meridian video, what I'm going to be doing from here-on. This is the rough outline.
Thanks and have a happy New Year,
DJ PC

"If I had more time I would have written a shorter letter." Keep your chin up chief there is still the path to walk.
I have a few very select people that I will watch no matter what as soon as they come up and you're definitely one of them. Consistently amazing work and definitely worth it every time. You're one of the few people I like enough to *make* my friends sit and watch an hour long video. We will sit here together and you will be scandalized and informed.
Hey Peach, I just now subbed but I’ve been watching you since the Far Cry 3 days. I’m excited to see you tackle Blood Meridian, it’s my favorite novel. I’ve noticed your notes so far have discussed the faerie realm and medievalism aspect of it, which is a unique perspective I’m excited to see, but I’m curious to know if you’ve looked into any of the gnostic aspects of the novel as well. I think Gnosticism is fascinating and it’d be cool to see you melt down about it in your autistic vernacular. Can’t wait to see the final product.
You'll get my five bucks a month till you disable the charge or I lose my job.
Nah bruh I drop everything to watch your shit. Take the time. An occasional shitpost video would be appreciated, but for real “going crazy reading primary accounts” type videos literally make me stop everything and take a night to watch. Your hour long + history videos are a staple for me Oh yea also don’t kill yourself. I’m going thru that and I’m currently on the edge of kill myself or watch a DJPC vid so use that emotional blackmail to keep on trucking fam
I'm quite satisfied with a switch 2 video now and then too. It was good, you can still do the goofy shit that got us here in the first place when you need a break or have something topical to say.
You're turning into a real academic now
Logged in to tell you to please don't burn yourself out, and that taking the time you need is essential. I work in the creative industry right now, and in case you haven't figured it out yet; IT WILL NEVER BE FUCKING GOOD ENOUGH. Finding a place to keep "roughly a 9-5" (or more accurately in our field, a 10-7/8, 4-5 days a week, is key. Personally, I've noticed when I don't put time limits on myself ("Oh I'll just work 15 hours a day this week"), then everything moves slower, because it doesn't matter! It'll get done at SOME POINT THIS WEEK ANYWAY! But you've got a good idea; putting some arbitrary deadline (once a quarter) then doing what it takes, and cutting what you can, to meet that deadline, is key. Every video essay has a graveyard of amazing content that didn't make it, and sometimes, flourishes due to "focus." Lastly, as you're striving to meet these "quarterly" goals, PLEASE give yourself some PTO. A week after every vid comes out, go on vacation, visit loved ones or friends for a week or two. Take it from a creative; you can't be your best if you're falling apart at the seams and losing your grip. We will see the improvement, and so will you. <3 Please love yourself, because we love you. Happy holidays, Happy New Year.
I appreciate the advice, part of the reason I want to pursue this new schedule is so that I can take more than two days off! I feel awful driving all the way out to beautiful locations only to not enjoy them! Harvesting the natural splendor for adbucks! Thank you for the wisdom, I’ll take it to heart. Happy holidays to you too
can somebody tell me how to find the patreon exclusive content? usually there's a collection for this but here it's empty. thanks!
I don’t have “exclusive” Patreon videos, but can you be more precise? Do you mean the occasional behind-the-scenes or full videos? I did a video for GoG that they pulled out on, I can send that to you, but that’s the only real “exclusive” Patreon vid
Sir, I pay good money for quality. Take all the time you need!
You could do the occasional cobbler crackdown to bait out sponsorships until the contract runs out
So what you're saying is I have to read Blood Meridian finally...
I trust the pie man. Whatever you need to do to be happy with the final video im on board.
always gotta be quality over quantity- make something that lasts forever
To make sure I understand. Is this a hard rule, or a guideline. If say, a game came out, and outside of any other obligations like sponsorships, you enjoyed it, and it inspired you, would you make a additional video on it? Or, would you stick to the 4 video rule? If you stuck to the rule, would you instead, write up a short review and post it as text to the Patreon? Secondly, if you were able to collaborate with another creator, say InRangeTV or Feral Historian, would you break the 4 video rule for that, or push another project back, to make room? Finally, what is your take on collaboration, I saw the tangential connection to Blue Jay, but it wasn't a REAL collaboration, but videos in conversation, would you even be open to collaborating with other creators of a similar 'genre'. ( If you haven't seen Feral Historian's videos, they remind me of your videos, just an older you, and not just because he is also ginger!)
Quality is worth a wait- slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Love your work.
on nice, yea. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast lol.
I'd understand, you do what's best for your writing style. I agree that sometimes it does get off-topic and you go into lengthy detailed bits that could be a video on its own, but it's interesting at times. I can see there's a lot more you want to talk about and bring to light in a video. Honestly, it's a bit refreshing to see your latest videos be somewhat broken down, it's like you broke down parts of the original video idea and decided to focus on each topic in individual videos. That was great, I felt like I got your full perspective.
My favorite content creators, regardless of subject, are the folks who take their time and only post once in a while, and if you feel like that’s what you need to do for your videos to be up to your standard, that’s perfectly fine with me.
I made 1 video this year, for funsies. If you made 1 video a year I would be happy, as long as I knew you weren't burning yourself out and making it not fun for you, for our (the viewers) benefit.
Hey man, you do you. The best creatives I know on YouTube take their time, focusing on quality rather than quantity (which includes you, I absolutely love your videos). All of us are willing to wait however long it takes because we know the end result will be a banger. As an aside, have you ever thought of putting your videos out on alternative platforms like Nebula, lbry, peertube or whatnot? They are absolutely smaller than YouTube (what isn't, honestly) and so might not help with monetization being dodgy, but at least if YouTube decides to be assholes and arbitrarily nukes your channel for being too good, you'd have a backup, of sorts.
I applied to be part of Nebula, and definitely would love to have another place to share my videos. I doubt they’ll let me in, but maybe someday! For now that’s the only alternative I’d like to post to, but maybe some competitor will arise!
I think you could really benefit from longer breaks, I know Hbomberguy takes like 6 months to make a video, and his quality cannot be denied. It’s good to hear that you have monetisation once more, but YouTube is far too fickle a website to trust now, and it’s only getting worse. There’s this thing in academia, you’ve probably heard of called “publish or perish”, in my opinion it’s what’s holding back groundbreaking scientific discoveries, because that takes long periods of time of curiosity and work, often without anything concrete for many years. I do not wish to see you fall down the same trap, take your time, the road is long, enjoy the journey we’ll be with you at the finish line.
My friend you need a vacation. Take your time, you've already done more than most creaters can do in their entire life time. We will be here when you get back.
Sounds like you're running into the 'its never good enough' black hole of energy sucking. Do yourself a favour. Forget narrative purity. Embrace the chaos of getting some shit out there, one way or another. Find some tiny little topic that annoys you. Maybe a single event in history that makes no sense to you and then just dig through it for a day or two. Leave the big videos to be objective and let the small ones be the hottest of takes. That should keep you sane
Please take your time. I can only speak for myself here. But in my opinion your tier of content is among the greats such as LEMINO and Exub1a. where no matter the subject matter or time between uploads, time will be made to watch it.
Do what you gotta do, we support you! 🫡
Really happy to hear about the remonitization even if it is destined to be temporary. I already drop everything to engage with your art, the short videos and long form ones, and I frequently rewatch both types. It's plain to see from the outside, especially more and more over the last couple of years, that you are very very passionate about the subject matters of your videos, and even your more "off the wall" vids are still very engaging for that reason alone. Take all the time you need to make what you want to make, but I would assume that everyone here is beyond satisfied with what you've been doing and is always eager for anything you our your mind to.
Im looking forward to doing some small weird vids between the big sponsored ones, but not promising anything!
Take your time, man. We've got nothing but.
I always drop everything to watch one of your essays. I'm happy to hear that you're getting to some stable ground. Thank you, and here's to another year.
Wait, YouTube remonetized you? That's awesome, since it also improves the algorithm and lets more people find you. Take the time you need to make something good. As one of the native Gamers the colonization (content shift) and reeducation (personal growth) has been great.
Before white man was, video essay waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.
Glad you're figuring out how to balance your life more effectively. Always looking forward to new videos. I always take the time to sit down and watch them on my living room TV for the best viewing experience when you upload. Wishing you the best in the new year
4 videos a year!? Why that's 4 times more videos per year than JCS Criminal Psychology releases! My kink is content blue-balls, so we good daddy.
I swear the last one was written by AI
Hey do what you gotta do mate I’ll still support your vids
Not to dick suck too hard but I have cried at least twice watching some of the videos you have put out this year you sir are doing excellent work. Here's to 2026 the best year yet!
Quality is the Godhead, my Brahman.
Pretty reasonable since you are balancing both this and college. At least we have the Yee Haw Podcast to supplement during the down times.
This is excellent news and that plan sounds great to me, as long as you still throw me a Doom Eternal reference from time to time
Sorry to hear under how much stress you put yourself! I am just a decadent European, so I cannot fully comprehend the American grindset, but I do fathom that burning yourself to a crisp does not work for long for any artist. And I can only speak for myself, but I would have no problem if there would be only 1 video a year. As long as the quality is fine and you put your soul in it (so you still have to sell that one). So keep up the Lords work in your own pace and Happy New year to all Cobblers!
4 videos a year, what joyous times
Sorry to hear of production frustrations Cobbler. Glad to know patron support is alleviating somewhat on the issue. I know I at least have no plans of cancelling ever. This is one of my personal favorite channels on the platform and your dedication to telling stories that matter and talking about the things important to you as opposed to speaking on the next popular thing is an increasingly rare thing on YouTube. Looking forward to the Blood Meridian vid, and for you to continue producing with the quality you always have.
Happy New Year! Personally, I prefer waiting for and supporting good work that I enjoy re-watching, over frequent, disposable “content” wherever I can. Not to judge those who do, it’s understandable because, you know, food and rent and all… But, if you don’t need to compromise too much of your creative satisfaction for the sake of survival, I applaud you for taking that opportunity. It’s not in the cards for most.
I can't begin to understand how buried in your work you must feel right now. A 12-hour day of grinding on a video will translate to maybe 10-45 seconds of actual video runtime when it's all said and done. That's pretty daunting for anyone, especially if you're doing most of the work by yourself.
Mo'money Mo'bitches Mo'Cobbler Happy New Year everyone
Whatever makes the anime discussion page of the discord reopen
It's closed again
But nah I think we all would agree that you should do whatever suits you better. I wouldn’t mind four a year if that’s what you think will help you make better videos that is most importantly making you happy and fulfilled. We’re all here for you cobbler. Love you Father Cobbler
Virtual bear hug m'dude. Id give you a real one if i could. You do something real, and im so here for it, however you go about it.
God bless
Keep it up king
We need an audiobook narration of it by you father cobbler
