Case 346: Megumi Yokota

When 13-year-old Megumi Yokota failed to return home from her regular badminton practice on November 15 1977, her parents immediately raised the alarm. The police in Niigata, Japan, conducted one of the city’s largest ever investigations, but no trace of Megumi was ever found. Two decades later, the case took a shocking turn that would rock the entire nation of Japan and have geopolitical ramifications…

Kyoto Robato on Youtube did a fantastic video on this case if you would like a more visual guide. But I still think about Megumi and recognised her name immediately when reading the title. Absolutely tragic, senseless and heartbreaking.

Excellent writing and storytelling as always. Casefile’s delivery style of cases is so immersive, keeps us guessing the whole time and makes us experience all those emotions while bringing awareness of horrible things in this world and poor victims. I don’t think this podcast can ever be beaten. Thank you Casey and team.

This was one of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve listened to. Well narrated, with compassion, respect and detail. The way the story unfolded kept me completely engaged from beginning to end. It was devastating to hear what happened to such an innocent child, and it serves as a powerful reminder of how precious and vulnerable children are. Thank you for presenting such a tragic case so thoughtfully and respectfully. Your storytelling continues to be among the best, and I look forward to the next episode. I was hoping for a positive ending. 😢

I learned about these kidnapping cases ten or fifteen years ago. I had immediately thought, "yeah right, there weren't North Koreans throwing nets over Japanese people and dragging them out to sea," then was extremely freaked the fuck out when I found out it was true. What the fuck, that's terrifying, the whole situation is terrifying, especially the thought of your loved one being trapped somewhere among insane people who might torture you to death at any time for any reason. The relationship between the Korean peninsula (North and South) and the country of Japan is........... Complicated, to say the absolute least, but obviously both ordinary Japanese citizens as well as desperate brainwashed North Koreans don't deserve to have to suffer for it. You can see the silhouette of your child, trapped behind a darkened window, but no matter how hard you bang on the glass, you can't get to them. You both know about the tiger in there with them, but there's nothing either of you can do about it.

this case was wild! i had heard about north korea kidnapping south koreans before, and i think i had heard about them kidnapping japanese citizens too but i never learned about any individual cases or why they would even do that. i was also blown away to learn that it’s connected to my favorite casefile episode, case 185: kim chol. i really love learning about these types of stories so i hope they continue to cover them!
