Case 339: Waco (Part 2/3)
In 1992, a chance discovery by a UPS delivery driver would lead to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - commonly known as the ATF - launching an investigation into David Koresh’s activities at Mount Carmel in Waco, Texas. Upon discovering that Koresh’s Branch Davidians were stockpiling illegal weapons, the agency began planning a raid that was also intended to boost their image with the public… but the consequences would be disastrous.

I’ve read and seen a lot about this, but I still learned new information from this podcast coverage of the case. Thanks!
On a lighter note… as a fifth generation north Texan, I have to applaud Casey on his pronunciation of “Mexia”. Texas has a ton of weirdly-pronounced place names, and “Muh-HAY-uh” is one of the trickiest!
I’ll also add that this one literally hits home, to the point that I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to listen (but glad I did.) I remember the initial ATF siege very clearly because it was freshmen Family Weekend at my college in San Antonio. That Sunday, my mom and sister drove back home to Dallas, and it took an extra three hours because I-35 was completely shut down just south of Waco.
I don't know why but I always thought of this as happening in the 70s, not the 90s. When I heard President Clinton, there was this "wait, did they mispeak" moment.
Same! I didn't hear about it until I was much older and I'm born mid 80's. I do live in Australia though. One of the guys arrested works around the corner from me!
Parallel to this story I watched the ‘Prophet’ series on Netflix and man there is something about some guys when they get a little power and control “hey where all the little girls at” Disgusting, Vile manipulating creeps
I was in high school when all of this went down—Ruby Ridge, Waco, & OKC. This is definitely putting a lot of the pieces of the story back together for me. I was only vaguely aware of Ruby Ridge, and then Waco and OKC were huge stories.
OKC? Googled but nothing.
Great stuff... well awful... but you know what I mean. Can't wait for ep 3!
Waited all week for this, even went back and listened to the Jonestown episode as it’s somewhat similar
I did the exact same thing haha!
