v0.50.2 Bugfix + v0.51 Poll!

Sorry for the longer-than-ideal wait for a bugfix on v0.50.2! I wanted to make sure I squashed all of the bugs that had been reported in addition to rolling in a large patron-provided patch. You should notice the interview UI provides more information depending on the level of recruitment knowledge policy and that the recruitment criteria function more correctly, among other changes.

... Also I spent a lot of time playing Elden Ring. I'm only human! Anyways, here's the updated verison, unfortunately it's not save compatible.

PC: Lab Rats 2 v0.50.2-PC
Mac: Lab Rats 2 v0.50.2-Mac
Android: Lab Rats 2 v0.50.2-Android

Now, onto forward-thinking business! With the basics laid with the Duties update there are a few different tasks I want to tackle in the near future, and I want your input for what you'd like to see in v0.51.

(If you're wondering about the clothing/images situation: I have some experimental work going on with Ren'py's support for Live2D. Right now I'm working on a way to replicate the pattern/colouring effects we have right now. If I can figure that out I'll spend a full update cycle moving us over to that system.)

One of the things I always thought about Nora was that she was in her prime scientific years. And going by the maxim of you won't discover anything truly new after the age of 30, I had her pegged as being in her early '30s working out her serum discovery. That plus the way she was depicted in LR basically cemented the idea of a woman dedicated to practical applications of science trying to prove herself before others make the same breakthroughs. Putting her past 40 in LR2 just doesn't really fit all that well. Just my 2 cents.

Dyschology · March 16, 2022

When you say "First open the game" do you mean load a save file or actually when you double click the executable? This is just uninformed speculation but that second error looks like a save error which isn't unexpected since this update is not save compatible. Unfortunately we will all probably need to start new games if we want to use the patch fix.

How would the live2d system work? Can your give us an idea of what it might end up looking like?

V
Vren · March 17, 2022

In broad strokes it will look similar, but it will give me way more control over girls physical parameters. Daz3D will still be the source of the images (I'm no artist, and I still appreciate being able to automate the image generation side of things). In the (still highly experimental) new system I will have all of the clothing/body/face/hair options sitting in a single Live2D model and only expose the ones that are currently being worn. Live2D has far more powerful animation and rigging tools than the janky system I'm using right now. Assuming I can get the basic system set up without hitting any technical roadblocks I will be able to use their physics system to do dynamic physics driven boob bounces, scale height properly (ie. stretch arms/legs, leave head and torso the same size), scale boob size smoothly (rather than descrete steps), have proper blinking/eye movement behavior, and so on. I will also be able to add some proper animations and make use of that same physics system to have things be much more dynamic (I hope!) All of this relies on chopping up images correctly in Daz (so all my automation code there will need a rewrite) and a fair bit of manual work in Live2D to set up the body types. Hopefully I'll have more news on this in the next month or two, and then I can devote a full update cycle to implementing everything.

Killy_Blame · March 16, 2022

H
Helcries · March 16, 2022

I just hope that you stop changing the way the game works, and focus more on the Characters heading forward. You've already made it so renpy is laggy, sluggish, and badly unresponsive at times. And people seem to forget that this is a porn game, not some kind of AAA game, why the hell would anyone want a porn game that keeps adding extra difficulties to the game play. It's almost to the point where I am about to drop the game (like I did summertime saga) due to all the BS that is now going on in game. My suggestion, work on the people that made labrats 1 a success. Add more content for them, focus on the damn story. Add more characters, build their stories out. Just for the love of all that is unholy..... PLEASE stop ruining the game by messing with the way it bloody plays, and stop doing what ever your doing that makes renpy run like dogshit. EDIT: Or more to a more robust game engine like unity, that will be able to handle the stuff you want to do.

D
Dyschology · March 16, 2022

Are you having performance issues? Besides the slightly longer load time on game start this game runs just about the same as any other renpy game on my machine. Maybe there are compatibility issues that should be looked into? I double checked my resource manager just in case and I can't seem to get the game to take up more than ~5% of my CPU and 500MB of memory. To add a contrasting perspective, what makes LR2 stand out from the various other 18+ games to me are the systems. You ask who would want this, I'm one of those people who would want a porn game to keep adding extra complexity to the game play (as long as it's fun to play). That's the whole reason I play an 18+ game, if all I wanted was story I'd read one of the many many adult novels or kinetic visual novels. The fact that LR2 is actually a fun management game on top of the 18+ content makes it a novel experience that stands out in an extremely saturated market of linear story games. Not to mention that the agency of it being a sandbox game plays a key role in the core theme of the game in the first place, taking control of your little town via your serums. That said I do understand your perspective too, in a perfect world we just get both types of content for both types of players, I too would love more story and scripted events. But unfortunately dev time on an independent project like this is limited, and it does seem like the systems side of things has gotten more love recently. Maybe there is a need to balance that out with more narrative content in the mean time.

P
Profugo Barbatus · March 16, 2022

More duties content would be excellent - It'd be a shame to have such an open system, and only have 2-3 real options, none of which are really 'choices' when you have promotions coming down as fast as they do. By late game, I've got girls with open duty slots because there's nothing really of worth for 'em to do with it. Being able to decide between Marketing girls helping out high profile clients, or 'visiting' officials to reduce attention at the cost of marketing. Production girls 'convincing' equipment suppliers to provide cutting edge software updates for your machines. RnD girls 'field trialing' their own compound ideas over at the university. HR taking a more 'hands on' approach to executive morale. The possibilities are almost limitless from a flavor perspective alone, and doubly so when tied into events.
