This Pod's On Fire (ft. Michael Barclay, Arlen Thompson, and Tim Kingsbury)
On this rare Riley-less episode Dan is joined by Michael Barclay, Arlen Thompson and Tim Kingsbury to discuss Michaels new book on the rise (and rise!) of Canadian Indie Rock 2000-2006. Why do these bands have so many members? Did Fugazi brain poison a generation into self sabotage? Are the rents too damn high to facilitate another scene? All this and more as we survey The Half Decade When Canada Was Cool*

Learning about the indie rock websites, all I could think of was that the Montreal rave scene was also organized very effectively on a still-existing website called rave.ca
the concept of being a based quebec nationalist but only to bomb the real estate market like in '95 is funny on the surface but it's really really close to the concept of wanting to ban say asians from the vancouver real estate market
In regards to rent- out of curiosity I looked at 1 bedrooms in Sudbury on kijiji and sorted by price to find the median. About $1300. This is a new development in Northern Ontario I think. 2018 was the year I was deciding where to go to school and when I looked then 1 bedrooms there tended to hover around $1000 except for condo units and luxury rentals. Even my hometown, Sault ste Marie, which is smaller and grimmer than Sudbury is getting expensive. People are gonna need to move to like Sherbrooke Quebec to make music and art lol. Only small town Quebec is cheap enough (edit: one good thing about small northern ontario towns though is there will be a few landlords named like Joe zamboni, age 67 who does not know how to open pdf and assumes the rental market has stayed the same since their last tenant moved in and will not check. There were a few 1 bedrooms under 1000 and a bachelor with a weird raised shower built into the closet for 725)
also hi Dan I humbly request u play the grey estates at the Olympia show next month lol
ok so as someone who was born in 99 this puts a lot in context, esp bc I got into a bunch of what u call the muchmusic bands when I was like 19 (limblifter, age of electric, the gandharvas,) so I was always wondering like, what was in between that wave and the indie boom
R.I.P. in peaces Voir, and especially Mirror
The Rant Line was a treasure, though.
