I think it’s obvious Denys that tonight’s reporting was an eye opener judging by all the comments. Personally I think we’re past the Terminator era and more into the Blade Runner Nexus 8 model. Coming to a Walmart near you.

As always, most technological leaps were made during times of war. However, with each major technological breakthrough came the same old wrong assessment: We don't need this old stuff anymore. The point is, simply speaking, there is no one-does-it-all. Soldiers need a toolbox, and 'old-school' weaponry will be upgraded and adapted to be used in specific situations. One example: When during the war in Vietnam the first air-air missiles were introduced, the USAF quickly called to eliminate guns from their airplanes, because missiles would make dogfights obsolete. It took them less than 2 years begging DoD to bring back the guns. Until today, every fighter aircraft has a gun - a weapon of last resort, it can't be jammed by EW and it's deadly in the hands of a skilled pilot. What changed, however, are the means for aiming and firing the guns - today it is marksmanship at sustained 9g thanks to the computers permanently calculating the firing solution...

Fascinating and genuinely spooky developments. Interesting comment T. Garland, that an equivalent term for algorithms is methodologies. Methodologies require breakdowns of problems, analysis, tests… ? You should be able to produce documentation for accountability and reproducibility of your methodology? So is AI more like a crude churning of data (similarities and differences) and paths (to find the significant characteristics)… ? I am relieved my enemies like Russia don’t have these AI drones Denys is describing.

Denys, Artificial Intelligence is not algorithmic. AI is brute force: try everything possible and judge what is the optimal. Algorithms are computing from 1960s to 2020. Then computing became so fast and capable there is no need to instruct the best methodology (algorithm). Just feed as much data as possible, let AI identify the similarities and differences and determine the significant characteristics.

That is objectively false, at least as far as I'm able to ascertain, and I have no idea why you would zoom in on that and spread misleading notions (here, or in general). Methodology != algorithm. And code/programming is not synonymous with algorithms either. All of the emergent digital world this is still 100% reliant on 'compute' and relies completely on numbers/binary. The fact that this now happens at unprecedented scale does not change that, and the same will even apply in the quantum age, still (assuming that will actually scale and not cause even more energy issues). Your particular notion 'try everything possible' is absolutely NOT what modern AI systems do; they just use trained patterns and pattern recognition to identify & return, as quickly/efficiently (!!) as they can, the most likely combination of data points e.g. numbers and letters in order to come up with their 'intelligence'. I am not saying they are not literally that, i.e. 'intelligence', but that is a distinct, more philosophical discussion. I stand to be corrected and would suggest baseline supporting sources for my counter-argument here to be https://www.etymonline.com/word/algorithm and https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/ai-in-a-nutshell.
