It is crazy how much damage Bob Chapek did. Iger & Eisner were still money hungry but they gave crumbs for the most part.

The Excalibur (sorry, "King Arthur Hotel") abandoned dragon segment was 1000% the highlight!! It just kept getting better! Even though it was not on the original topic at all. Or maybe because it was not on the original topic. On the topic, the bath bombs segment was super fun and relatable. Also loved learning more about Club 33. I've never even considered trying to get in there because the barrier to entry is insanely high (not just money but connections, also I don't live in or near CA) and I appreciate that Jenny mentioned more than once that getting in is not a thing everybody can do. It is kind of odd though, that someone realistic enough to be hesitant about a "$5 bath" would overestimate the ease of getting into Magic Castle as a regular person.

idk if anyone will even see this comment lol but I went to the medieval fantasy themed hotel/casino in vegas (excalibur) with my parents when I was literally a toddler! this was in the early 2000s. I didn't see the animatronic show but I do remember seeing the sea serpent out and merlin's hut. inside the hotel they had these two massive purple dragon statues that I was obsessed with. I'd assume they're not there anymore but I guess I don't know for sure. we also went to shark reef at mandalay bay which I thought was really cool! if I ever went to las vegas again for some reason I'd definitely want to go there.

I lived in Vegas 21 years and never heard of a Caesars Palace animatronic show with talking statues. The only fountain show I know of was the Bellagio.

I’m forever angry at the Magic Castle bc my friends and I were scammed out of $200 bc the guy we were meant to see cancelled last minute and the castle refused any refunds because he wasn’t technically affiliated with them and they refused to get involved lol

y
your_nutt · December 24, 2024

I'm confused, how is it a scam? You would still get dinner, and you'd still get a show. There's usually 2-3 acts for the Palace shows anyway, and the reservations aren't tickets for a specific magician's show. I guess it would be a bummer if you were really excited for a specific magician, but it's not a scam.

T
Talia M · October 6, 2024

I promise that not everyone in LA has been to that magic show thing

K
Kyra B · September 25, 2024

I'm years after this was posted, but if you can't find a magician or you're from out of town, the Magic Castle has a hotel and you can book a package with the hotel that gives you access to the club. I say this as if I'm a local; I'm a Bostonian who hasn't been further west than South Dakota, I just research the heck out of my interests.

M
Melissa Whittaker · May 23, 2024

We got married at the Wynn in Vegas and it used to be my favorite place to visit for years, but it really has gotten so overpriced. We used to easily get rooms on the strip for cheap, you could get 99 cent prime rib meals as an example, and there was so much to see. They’ve been progressively taking out all the nostalgic stuff and the cost of everything is outrageous.

Also, Caesars Palace (the place with the animatronic statues) used to have something called Caesars Magical Realm, which was a sort of dinner show themed to like, ancient Rome(?) And there were magicians walking around and performing magic tricks and it was like, super duper themed. Expedition Themepark did a video about it I believe

We have done the VIP tour twice. Both in Disneyland. The first time was amazing, probably 4-5 years ago. We did it exactly as you laid out - one day for the min 6-8 hours. You get to "pick" your type of tour - history lessons or rides. We went for rides. We had a mixed group of a 6 year old (at the time), mom\aunt, and grandparents. So we were a mixed generation group. Our family expects to walk and stay busy on a vacation - so when we go to Disney we pack in from early am to end of night. We were probably there 2-3 days and only did the tour one day - as a way to make sure that we got to go on the rides we wanted multiple times. We had heard good things about the tour. One unexpected plus was even hustling around and speed walking everywhere we were not as tired as a normal Disney day since we were not standing around in lines all the time. Our tour guide was amazing and great with my nephew and my mom (grandma). Just a perfect level of friendly without being too "Disney" We were only going to do the VIP tour in Florida (if at all) since we didn't think it would be worth it again at Disneyland - but liked the tour guide aspect enough to think one day in FL at some point would be fun. Then COVID happened. Our first trip after vaccines was to San Diego (we figured we would probably not travel in US once travel really opened up and my nephew loved boats) in December 2021. Side note: the boat tours at San Diego are so worth it. We did the Vietnam (??) speeder boat - that was amazing and the actual Veterans were running it. I think the tickets were around 30.00 for an hour tour. So much fun! They let my nephew (then 10) drive it for about 10 minutes. Anyway, we tacked on a day trip to Disneyland for my nephew. Since we drove up (leaving around 3 am) to the park and drove back to San Diego that night we figured we would splurge with the VIP tour - we wanted to make sure we could ride the Rise of the Resistance (wasn't built the last time we were at the park) and make sure we didn't waste our day standing in lines in the park. It could not have been more of a letdown. The problem with the VIP tour (besides the cost) is it depends greatly on the tour guide. And ours on the second tour was not great. Nothing horrible of course and we are not the type to complain to customer service. But the personality was just off - I honestly kind of go the impression that he was a filler tour guide. He knew the park and could get us to the rides fine - but he never even introduced himself to everyone in the group (we only had 5 people). If you asked him a question he would answer - but not offer anything more or talk at all. Honestly we are not that chatty of a family - but it is very weird to be with someone 6/8 hours in a day and stand in lines with them and have them be silent. So you take a big risk on the personality of the tour guide. Another thing we noticed was that with the recent changes (removing fast passes, adding Genie +) there honestly wasn't much difference from paying for the fast passes on all the rides we would want. We didn't get on rides faster (the VIP just gets you to the fast pass entrance - so you still wait in lines, they are just shorter lines) One other thing that wasn't mentioned in the cost of the VIP tour is the tip for the guide - which was around 150.00. The other "perk" of the VIP tours was special VIP seating roped off for the firework shows at night (any day you had the tour - long after your tour ends). It was nice to have and we used it - but not something to tip your over on paying for a tour. Side note: we did the VIP tour for the San Diego zoo (not the safari). That still remains the best tour we have ever had. The guide was great - but the personality of the guide will not make/break your experience as you are getting dropped off (often backstage) for animal meet and greets. They have you fill out a survey before you go and say you might get 5-4 animals. You get driven in a golf cart everywhere - which was the major deciding factor as we had grandparents that can hike flat Disney but probably would not make it on the zoo hills. It might have just been that we didn't pick the common popular animals - but we told them to pick whatever they thought would be fun - but that the kid in the group LOVES cats, so any cats (no matter what type) would be great. Due to COVID they had extra barriers around all the cat exhibits (zoos had a lot of big cats die due to COVID) so we couldn't get as close as normal but we got to see so many cats (the fishing cat was the first and amazing to see as they had just fed him) Because we were super flexible (and didn't need to see the "popular" animals) I feel like they added about 6-7 more animals then normal. The only animal meeting we weren't that impressed by was the penguins - they are cute, but you can see them at any zoo. My sister asked for the Secretary Bird as a joke and we are pretty sure that we were the first group to ever request them. At each animal meeting you had your tour guide but then you also had 1-2 animal trainers that are assigned to care for that animal. They were the experts and you could ask any questions. The trainer for the Secretary Bird was great - but you got the feeling that she had no idea what to say to interest a tour group as no one picks that bird for tours. They were great birds and look very weird close up. All through the tour our guide kept saying we might have a special meet and greet at the end. We kind of forgot about it as we had seen so many animals. And then he pulled up to a stadium type place (I think where they have a bird show?) and we filed in to this huge empty stadium and get brought down to some seats a couple rows back. The bring out a golden retriever and we thought it was going to be a cute dog that might do tricks - nope - it was a cheetah! It was so awesome to see one that close and to find out how nervous they are (the dog was its companion). It was an amazing end to a wonderful day. The zoo tour (at least at the San Diego zoo) was very worth it. Also worth it: tours when in non-English speaking countries. We just got back from Italy (Nov 2022) and all of our tours (in particular the Napals\Pompeii) were amazing (except for a weird walking food tour in Venice - that lady hated Americans :) ). It is money well spent - you already paid a ton to get over there (and took the long plane ride) you might as well know what you are looking at. Not only do you get to see more (usually have a driver to get you places vs walking or using buses) but you get the history. Which for Italy was needed. While I wasn't a fan of going to the Vatican for personal reasons - we did go (how can you not if you are in Rome - I was out voted). Having the private tour got us in early, missing the crowds and you had someone knowledgeable explaining the the art. I know that there are audio tours, but having a tour guide to direct us through to the "highlights" and the things she thought we would like was great and got us out in a couple of hours while still feeling like we saw what should be seen. My sister\mom did have a mixed bag on the tour guides in France (summer 2022) - I think the Monte Saint Michelle tour guide was good. But the flea market tour guide in Paris gave the impression that he didn't think much of them as they're not buying expensive antique at his friends shops. I know that Paris (not France) has a stereotype on hating tourist (especially Americans), but when I was there (Dec 2019) we had an amazing time with everyone we interacted with (granted we where only there one night as we took a spur of the moment train ride from Zurich). Our guide in Paris (it was a night driving tour in a classic car for a couple hours) said we were one of the only tours that he had go to more of the city than normal as we didn't car to get out and take pictures at every stop. The first tour guide we really had was a trip to Japan (Nov 2018) - it was a last minute trip and we only had 3 days - 2 nights. On the one full day we had we wanted to see Tokyo but knew we would have no hope in navigating the city in any efficient manner - and we would have been right, the trains are great but not easy for a tourist to understand. Our tour guide was amazing, she was great with my nephew (probably around 7 at the time) and was great at knowing what to recommend (as we figured she would know the city best) I believe most of our tours were booked through "tours by locals" - if you plan on traveling to a non-English speaking country (and you don't know someone locally) you really should look into a tour guide of some sort - even if it is just for certain days\sites. tl;dr - VIP in Disneyland is not worth it. Tour guides for elect sites\days for international travel to non-English speaking countries is a must!

Been scrolling through Jenny's old comment sections and I really enjoyed this read! Re: European tours (especially food walking tours, SUCH a shame your guide was no good), if anyone gets the opportunity, I heavily recommend the walking chocolate tour in Zurich. I think it's either free or like £10 (we pre-booked it on tripadvisor). Very informative about the history of the city and you get to try amazing local chocolate from a variety of places. We also did a day trip to Heidiland/Liechtenstein that was incredible!

I thought I was just a wimp for closing my eyes on the Jaws ride as a kid and refusing to go on the Jurassic Park ride because the idea of giant animatronics, underwater or no, TERRIFIED me (and if I'm being honest the thought of them still makes me break into a cold sweat), but it's vindicating to know I have an actual phobia. It will be even more vindicating when they finally start coming to life and killing people, which I know to be inevitable.

I’m an out of state passholder for Disney world and i know a lot of previous APs don’t like the changes there either. We actually like genie + way more than we liked the old pass system. We could never get rides when we decided to just pop in for a day but now everyone is sort of on a more even playing field which we enjoy (y’a know minus hotel guests having access earlier) but we really enjoy our passes. I know that it’s not a good deal for everyone. Being out of state definitely changes how we feel too I think cause when we go it’s a big trip so it’s afforded us easier access even with the reservation system. I will say we’ve never had an issue getting a reservation even during Christmas week. Anyways. Thank you for being good content always and when it’s 3:30am and i can’t sleep because I haven’t taken my sleeping medicine lol. You’re a relaxing presence

You're SO right about makeup + skincare. Drugstore is good for eyeliner, mascara, brow pencils, maybe lip products and then mid-tier brands like Anastasia Beverly Hills/Charlotte Tilbury/etc are good for foundation, blush (complexion products) and eyeshadows. Basically anything where the pigment/coverage/skincare ingredients is important you want to splurge on those products! However, you're right that you hit a quality ceiling where it's best to save $20 and buy a Fenty foundation vs a Gucci foundation.

I went on the boat ride at Luxor! Honestly not sure why my family went to Vegas, we're not gamblers, but I was quite young. The ride had a tour guide at the front of the boat, and there were tunnel entrances that had like water coming down out of them, and the tour guide was like "who wants to get wet" and of course me being a small dumb child thought they were being serious and I was like ME! I want to be splashed! Obviously that did not happen. :(

a

Oh and before we got on I asked my mom if it was a scary ride, and she told me it had a "dip" like PotC, a ride I found very scary because of the drops. Obviously it was just a sedate boat ride through a building but I didn't realize she was lying until afterwards. Maybe I was too trusting as a child....

I think you're thinking of when it was the Disney Gallery! The space was originally earmarked to be a bigger residence for Walt, but he died before its completion and his family never used it. Through the 90s they opened it up and would exhibit (and iirc sell) concept art & models from various attractions and sold the balcony dessert package. It didn't become Dream Suite til the 50th anniversary, and was only available to contest winners and celeb guests

Incidentally we went to Las Vegas about a month after 9/11. I wanted to stay at Excalibur but I think we stayed at Sahara or Circus Circus. We visited the other hotels though and I think I remember having lunch at Luxor. I was 11 years old and I remember there was a convenience store selling toy slot machines and I wanted one (I guess because it was colourful?) and my parents probably suddenly had apprehensions about coming to Las Vegas at all haha

speaking of the annual passes though, i got my annual pass in paris for the first time (we still get parking and merch discounts…for now lol) and i have to say the reservation system hasn't felt nearly as punishing as people have made it sound. the one time i was stressed out was my birthday weekend, which fell on a holiday and the first day of the christmas season, and i was still able to book all the days i wanted for 2 annual passes + guest tickets for the rest of my family. on non-holidays it's usually possible to get reservations day of. though I fully understand people who used to be able to swing by are frustrated by it, especially if they live in the area (i'm a few hours away from the park so i have to plan my trips anyway). it's definitely a matter of perspective.

I'm also terrified of animatronics coming to life and attacking me, but fascinated by how cool they are. I live in Japan and went to Tokyo DisneySea for the first time this summer. One of the best rides in the park was Journey to the Center of the Earth which has an AMAZING Lava Monster animatronic and we got stuck on the ride right as we were finishing going past it. I was the one closest to it and I was absolutely terrified the whole ~2 mins we were stuck as it continued to do it's creepy movement back and forth. 10/10 animatronic though, very cool the other times we went on and didn't get stuck.

Back about 40 years ago, when I was 12 or so, my family did the VIP experience at Magic Kingdom. Our package included lunch at Cinderella Castle, which I recall as being mediocre food, but a very cool experience (the male waitstaff, I swear to you, had Prince Valiant style haircuts... I imagine the female staff had similar Middle Ages dos, but I don't recall). My father ultimately believed that, while expensive, the VIP thing was entirely worth it. You know, in 1983. The day was 100% hassle-free for its entire duration, in keeping with what you'd expect (at least at that time) from Disney. We went on each Space Mountain and the Haunted Mansion twice consecutively, just because we could. I've never had a Disney theme park experience before or since that even came close. This was, again, 40 years ago. The experience -- in terms of the guide who catered to us to a degree with which we were actually a little uncomfortable (we were not the sort of family to request that hot churros be awaiting us at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean) -- was very similar to what you describe, but I have no idea to what degree the cost was comparable to what it is now. I'm hardly disputing your feelings on the contemporary experience, so much as shamelessly waxing nostalgic for an ancient family vacation in this space. This was spring of '83, when EPCOT was brand new, which was the main incentive for this visit. I seem to recall there was no equivalent VIP experience available for EPCOT, but that it wasn't really needed (this was April '83, during spring vacation, and the park -- while hyped to an inconceivable degree -- was not especially crowded).

I experienced some of your ideal 90's Vegas one Thanksgiving. My family had breakfast in the MGM Grand and I remember LOVING the Wizard of Oz animatronics. We did a very lame, overpriced 3D/motion simulator ride in the Luxor. (We all regretted it). I remember watching the dragon show outside the Excalibur (in the cold) and thinking it was pretty cute. Then we went inside the Excalibur to wait in a 2+ hour line to eat a Thanksgiving meal that wasn't great. :) Decades later my family still groans about that dinner experience. More Vegas: I second the Neon Museum (or Neon Boneyard)... to get to see in person the crazy amount of skill and artistry (and size) of so many of the retired, famous neon signs. Part of your admission includes a tour which was great. And at night they do a show (at a different location, but on the property) that completely exceeded expectations. "A 45-minute show in the North Gallery using light projection to illuminate unrestored signs and incorporates music and archival footage to transport guests into Las Vegas’ history." The lighting tech they use is incredibly beautiful, the music, etc .. so immersive.

I really appreciate that you're also a vegetarian because I need that solidarity especially with theme park food. That, there's only one option you can eat and it's both vegan and gluten free, disappointment is profound and frequent. Sometimes it's so hard to explain to others how disappointing restaurants experiences are when it's like this. I feel like post-pandemic Disneyland vegetarian food is really guilty of this. I'm super tired of the only vegetarian option being Impossible meatballs and pasta. I was lucky enough to be invited to The Magic Castle by a member once and I do have to say it was some of the most fun I've ever had. We did 4 different shows, skipped dinner, and went bar hopping to watch the bartenders perform. If you get a chance to go, I honestly recommend it to anyone. I totally agree the main show isn't that important as my favorite show of the night was recommended by our sponsor member, and it was with under ~40 people in a very intimate theatre. That performance was incredibly impressive - we were right up in his illusions and couldn't tell you a thing about how he did them.

M

You’re so right about the vegetarian/vegan/GF food! My whole fam has celiac disease except me and there is constant disappointment when the GF options are basically everything-free. It’s convenient for the establishments and it’s nice for people with lots of food restrictions, but for everyone else it’s disappointing. If you already have to deprive yourself of gluten you don’t want to have to deprive yourself of dairy too! Especially if you’re stuck with 1 option! There are some places that are so good at it you can hardly tell but they are very rare.

I saw both the animatronic statue shows at Caesar's Palace, and the Caesar's Palace Twitter account beat me to the punch in saying one of them is very much Atlantis themed (Atlantis fell and it seemed like a Pterodactyl was involved?), and that's definitely the better one, although also the more out-of-the-way one. In the other, various statues put on a show for, I wanna say Bacchus, but it felt like something wasn't working when I saw it, because the statue would say "Check this out," and Bacchus would say "AMAZING!" or "ASTOUNDING!" and what was actually happening was a mild laser light show. Which felt underwhelming. And my friends and I were ready to be a great audience, we'd killed time before the show by drinking triple-strength margaritas at the FAO Schwartz, and when an employee was showing off magic kits, we were responding like he was David Copperfield, we were ready to be enthusiastic. That guy sold a bunch of magic kits that day. But aside from the fact that nobody stops you from getting drunk on the street/in a toy store, the main thing I like about Vegas is Cirque shows. O is spectacular and Zumanity was super fun and they're only in Vegas, so my priorities on a Vegas trip are 1) enjoy some ridiculous unsustainable opulence for a bit; 2) gamble for 40 minutes over the whole three days; 3) Cirque show. On that note, if the next video is the long-discussed Toruk video, that's fine and good and I'll enjoy it, but it only took three tweets for me to be 100% invested in a Rainbow Fish video. I had never heard of Rainbow Fish a week ago but now I want to hear all about how this aquatic Giving Tree of a fish became an international cross-media phenomenon and also a pool champion.

If Club 33 was that good, I personally don't think $200 is hugely overpriced given the location. Where I am in Belfast, that kind of five/six course menu at a really, really good fine dining restaurant could easily be £140 (admittedly with wine pairings), which pretty much would have been $200 until relatively recently and I reckon the general difference in wages and prices between LA and Northern Ireland could be close to offsetting the wine pairings. Now, you could argue that that kind of fine dining is intrinsically overpriced but I honestly don't think it is. As a rare treat, the sheer decadence and deliciousness of what you're getting combined with the sheer skill and ingredient quality that went into making it makes it well worth the money for me. What a lot of miss about that type of meal (but that you were prepared for) is that, even when the courses look small, if the restaurant is doing it right then the sheer richness and indulgence of the heartier dishes will make sure that you leave stuffed to the gills. I vividly remember, years ago, having to lie on a bench after one meal for about half an hour because it was far, far too good not to eat every bite but I physically couldn't drag myself home by the end (they were super-nice and absolutely would have let me lay up on one of the sofas in the lobby if I'd asked but I needed the fresh air). I barely even scratched the surface of my cheese plate that night so my lunches for the next couple of days were also the stuff dreams are made of. EDIT: Reading that back, I used the word 'sheer' a lot in that comment. Not my finest work. Anyway, just wanted to note the interesting parallel between how you view make-up pricing and how I view whisky/whiskey pricing. If you jump from the £15-20 "bottom shelf" range to the £35-40 range, the difference can be staggering. There are serious world-class bottlings in that region. If you jump up to £150 - £250 for flagship 18 or 21 year single malts, yes, they'll be unique experiences and they'll (usually) be at least as good as their cheaper cousins but I can probably only think of one (Redbreast 21) that was 100%, no-doubt-in-my-mind worth the massive price hike. Glengoyne 21 was straight-up not as good Glengoyne 12 in my book (although that's a very, very high bar - Glengoyne 12 is very much one of those world-beaters I was talking about). Sorry, massive tangent that was barely related to the video's topic and that I'll be lucky if more than a couple of people find remotely interesting. Still, though.

Ha, as a former Lush employee it’s always interesting when people say they don’t like the smell - i get migraines from a lot of scents but lush is very soothing bc they don’t use as many artificial scents (actually why i hate snow fairy, it’s so plasticky??), meanwhile i can’t step foot near a b&bw without a lingering headache lol. Plus, if even half their labor practices that they told us about are true, they are one of the most ethical places to shop from. Oh, and protip: only use the whole bath bomb if it’s one of the really small ones (like 2” diameter? i can’t remember offhand), otherwise, break them in half, or quarters if it’s one of the really big ones. In humid climates, the fizzing will fade faster so they don’t keep in storage as well, but if you just want the scent and water softness they’ll last a very long time. Ok, lush info dump over lol 🥲👍

The “dining in the dark” experience in Las Vegas is vegetarian friendly (but you don’t pick the food- it’s a surprise!) and I thought it would be very gimmick-y but it radically changed my relationship with having a meal! Super fun. The Canyon Ranch spa includes a day pass with a $50 ($30?) service. I could’ve spent 8 hours there easy jumping between the jacuzzi and the themed light show showers.

I stayed at The Mirage in Vegas for a work trip a couple months ago, and that hotel had the longest damn hallways I've ever seen. And of course they put me all the way at the end of the hall. A good candidate for ghosts I think. One of my coworkers got a room at the front of the hall, but it was weirdly off-kilter, like we put a ball on the ground, and it rolled across the room. Is the whole hallway on a slight incline? Idk anyways I wanted to go to Omega Mart based on your review of it, but I didn't have time unfortunately 😂 Guess I just have to go back.

J
Jenny Nicholson · December 6, 2022

In the short term following the attacks, everyone was paranoid that any high-profile destinations could be the next target (there was loads of talk about Disneyland specifically). But the bigger impact was that they were paranoid about airline travel. In the long term I think it was a cascade effect where a lot of tourist destinations cut costs after the initial loss, and declined noticeably in quality

Yeah the dragon was pretty spooky but the most disturbing part of the video was near the end when I heard that green was being used to indicate "incomplete" and yellow was being used for "complete". Green means "good to go" and yellow means "hold on this isn't done yet"; that's just how colours work.

J
Jenny Nicholson · December 6, 2022

Ok the reasoning is!! the default green shade in google docs is very aggressive to look at and stands out more than the default yellow shade. So if it's something I still have to work on I want it to jump out at me

I was a 90s kid and saw all of this stuff when it was actually affordable for and marketed toward families! I loved the big volcanoe on the strip and the fountain show at the ballagio was awesome. Excalibur basically had a super high quality medieval times type show, I loved that and all the magic shows when I was young! Now it's all so overpriced and I think the marketing is mostly directed at single people and seems kind of sleezy

On another note, I'm always disheartened to hear all of the latest experiences with planning Disney trips. I would love to plan a trip for me and my brother; he's Autistic and needs a fair amount of support. I think he'd do a lot better now that he's in his 30s compared to when we were kids, but with how inflexible things sound, I can't really imagine the experience would be much fun for either of us. Back in the Fast Pass days many years ago, my mom and him rode Thunder Mountain, like, 10 times in a row on our last day at the park. Might be tougher to do stuff like that now. On the other hand, while a trip to Universal may not have as many recognizable IPs for him, we could ride the Hogwarts Express back and forth as much as we want...

J
Jenny Nicholson · December 6, 2022

If you're planning a trip you should look into the DAS program, which is intended for guests w non-mobility-related disabilities and works a little like fastpass. You go to Guest Relations & talk about needs/challenges and they assess whether it's the right fit

Honestly I can't believe that the Excaliber Hotel is still a thing. It's so dated! These days the medieval theme might be cool and all but the sanitized white cheesy castle just doesn't cut it. Who knows, maybe it's doing okay but I have to think that a Harry Potter rebrand or even a more 'realistic' castle theme would fare better. I stayed there when I was a kid in the 90's and it was a distinct trivia point that Excaliber held the record for largest hotel ( by room count).

Jenny's comments on the changes to the Disneyland AP program was my exact experience when WDW added FP+. Having to plan your trip months in advance after hotel guests got first dibs took all the spontaneity out of it and every AP I knew started going far less than before. I miss the before times.

J
Jenny Nicholson · December 6, 2022

You know, I didn't visit WDW for the first time until after the introduction of Fastpass+. I always noticed that WDW didn't have the same AP culture California had, which really changed the guest dynamic there, but had always just assumed it was because WDW was so big, so remote for many to drive to, lower population density in the surrounding area, parking was so much less convenient. It didn't occur to me that FP+ might have just killed the locals' interest in going

I work in R&D in the cosmetic industry. Your comments regarding cosmetics are correct. A cheap brand will sell a $1-10 liner that cost them $0.005-0.05. Mid and Luxury brands will charge $10-up that costs them $0.01-0.50. And there is not always a correlation in manufacturing costs vs pricing. Luxury, almost by definition, is not worth the money.

About Vegas: I'm a big fan of tacky Vegas and theme parks and I will tell you this, you're right that it was waaaay cooler in the 90s when it comes to theming. But, despite most of the wacky stuff being removed, some is still around. There are still lots of things to see I think you might appreciate since you're into theming and theme parks. Specifically, I think if you go back to Vegas, you gotta try to make time for The AdventureDome witch is the Amusement Park attached to Circus Circus. It's enclosed in a glass dome so it's air conditioned and has several rides. The hotel itself is also themed to a Circus, including an entire Midway with games and claw machines and there's circus performances in the middle of the casino. I also definitely recommend staying at the Luxor inside the pyramid. They also have a tower and those rooms are newer and a little nicer, but the pyramid rooms are really cool, but you gotta request one to get one for sure. If you don't they will just toss you wherever they can. The pyramid rooms overlook the casino floor/ food court/ exhibit floor and the internal design of the rooms themselves is ultra weird and slanty because it's a pyramid! Not to mention getting to use an inclinator! I think Luxor still has an Arcade, and they still go hard on the theme these days too. New York New York has a pretty neat rollercoaser and the hotel itself is themed as well as the Venice themed mall, just as NY. Good pizza, lots of attention to detail. There's a killer themed aquarium at Mandalay Bay where you can walk through a sunken pirate ship in a tank with huge sharks. And they even have a souvenir passport you get to stamp at every exhibit. And there's a piranha tank! It's neat! And off the strip there's the best tiki bar I've ever been to when it comes to theming, including Trader Sams: The Golden Tiki. It's just full of stuff designed by former imagineers and even some actual Disney animatronics. One more- it's currently closed but in Primm just at stateline there's Buffalo Bills thats themed to a foresty old western town near a mountain. It had a log flume ride and Desparado, a rollercoater that goes underground. Not sure if it'll ever reopen but if it does, it's really worth checking out on the way into Vegas. Oh! and yeah Excalibur is an awful casino to stay in mainly because it's outdated and still really reeks of old cigarettes, like way way more than any other casino in my experience. But, it's worth checking out- the Round Table show is fun and they also still have an arcade. Anyway, thanks for the vid!

l
lily zacheis · December 6, 2022

i've been to vegas wayyy too much and the most fun thing to do in my opinion is visit all the fun themed hotels and walk around in them. the bellagio is pretty and always has a fun decorated garden based on the season, sometimes with animatronics. new york new york has a roller coaster that's pretty fun that goes outside so you can kinda see the strip from up there. i've never been to circus circus but that seems up your alley. paris is kinda fun, and of course there's lots of great food there which is the main appeal nowadays i assume. there's a couple of fountain shows around the strip as well that are fun to watch at night, the bellagio probably being the most famous one.
