Preview: Bad movie video

In the home stretch! I believe the finished video won't be too long - probably about 90 minutes. Although Part 4 is called The Story, to avoid redundancy I kind of split plot details between Parts 4, 5, and 6 to bring them up when they became relevant.

There are 8 parts total so there are still some surprises - and I recommend not googling about the movie to avoid spoilers. But I do recommend watching the movie in full, it's very fun to watch. It can be streamed here.

Has anyone seen it before? I thought about posting pics of only my cosplays to see if anyone in the world could guess based on that, but I ultimately decided I would be a little disappointed if they did, since I've kept it a secret for so long.

*Please note that video previews are works in progress. I am not soliciting critical feedback*

As someone who lives in florida it was certainly a choice to have every character decked out in no less than 10 layers, plus long sleeves, a leather jacket, or just being in all black.

don’t know if anyone has taken a stab at it, but with “a nuance, really” i think she’s going for ‘semantics’??? like “oh they ‘went missing’ ‘we killed them,’ pish posh, it’s all semantics.” that’s the only thing i think she could possibly maybe mean😭😭😭

Having now watched this preview several times, I really enjoy how much fun Jenny is having in this video. She's always having fun, but there is clearly a beautiful love for this film alive in her heart and it really makes the video engaging. I can't wait to see the whole thing, I suspect it will be a favourite. Also I completely understand why she has the clip of her repeating the MARNIE ROooOSE YOUKNOWWHATISAIDABOUTCOMINGHOMELATE GIIRRL in there, because I have repeated it with her every time, it's so fun.

I just started the movie and it's already incredible. Shayne Leighton's name flashes on the screen, fading in from left to right and quickly fading out again, but it's so badly edited that it fades away before her last name can appear. You can tell there IS a last name but it's literally indecipherable!

S
Silky · February 23, 2026

I now get what Jenny means by Raphael's murders not even making him look dangerous in a sexy way. I think part of the problem is that while we see Bianca in full goth get-up hunting someone down in the woods and magically sucking the life force out of her victim, Raphael's first hunt is just him stalking a woman in a suburban neighbourhood, cornering her in a shed, and grabbing her physically while she screams. It's much more mundane and thus feels a lot more real and uncomfortable. They really needed to have him go more Bianca-style, or ideally I think they should have actually portrayed the hunts entirely differently – they're incubi, and we're explicitly told that establishing a relationship with their victims makes the life force sucking stronger or more sating or whatever. So they should be like, picking people up at clubs, seducing them, and then sucking them out in bed. You know, in the throes of passion amd ecstasy!

S
Steven Johnson · February 21, 2026

I appreciate the acknowledgement that this film was clearly a labor of love - if it were just another bad movie, there wouldn’t be anything memorable or interesting about it, but when there’s so much to unpack (whether good, bad, or just oddball) there truly is creativity and earnestness going into it, however misguided.

My favorite part about Marnie coming home from class, getting yelled at by Walter for coming home late, and then Raphael saying goodnight to her, is that it’s clearly noon and could literally not be any sunnier.

On the note of "a lesson in editing", it reminds me of when I worked on a bad/mediocre movie myself a few years back. The production was so disorganized and chaotic, but I showed up and did my best possible job as an actor with the material I was given. Upon watching the final cut, I was really confused/annoyed at one particular transition: My character exited one scene mildly concerned, with afternoon light outside the window, and entered the next scene covered in tears, heaving sobs, onto a porch in the middle of the night. On the day we shot those two scenes, during the entire filming process, I was not made aware of how quickly the two shots would be following one another in the final movie (bc there were never any storyboards made). So, I figured the scene where I was sobbing uncontrollably would be cut in a little later. It's typical for movies to shoot super out of sequence. Not the script supervisor, nor director, nor ANYONE gave me any notes about "hey, remember where you're coming from in the previous scene" etc., while we were actually filming, and we were doing take after take of me crying my bloody eyes out. I remember being so mad watching the final movie cause it made my character seem insane lmao. and!! made me wish that someone had kept me on track cause it made me look bad as an actor. So! it's not just a matter of bad editing, it's a lack of forethought for post production, and is also likely indicative of the complete lack of a script supervisor, who are meant to be there to help with continuity and flow in shooting.

I keep thinking about that scene at 28:58 which from the very first time I saw it really hit me in the heart somehow. Something about the scene, the music, the way Raphael looks up at Marnie and sounds hesitant and insecure as he asks to touch her hand, an immortal being robbed of normal emotions who suddenly feels something human stirring inside him, something yearning for the simple touch of a hand against his... he just wants to see what it would be like to touch her 🥺 I assume it's supposed to be more about their strong bond setting off the energy-sucking powers at the slightest contact, and experimenting with that, but that's just one layer. This scene has at least one more layer, and it's Raphael wanting something simple and ordinary and human again for the first time in, idk probably since he was human himself? And it touches me so unironically. If anyone's wondering who on earth would root for their love, it's ME! (I've commented on this video so many times now, I feel silly but where else can I talk about this!! I promise I'll also do it when the full video is out so it will mean something to the algorithm lol)

You should check out the Last Vampire on Earth! It's maybe an even worse production value, but it's so good in my heart. It's about a girl who was raised Jehovah's Witness but has always felt like an outsider from her community falling in love with an agoraphobic vampire. It's beautiful and touching, and it's also so bad. It's free on YouTube, and was shot in Youngstown, Ohio. Chloe x Aurelias forever.

I loved everything about this! I’m so happy for Shayne, she is so cool and she got to live out a dream that feels very familiar to me as someone who was once a teen obsessed with reading and writing monster romance stories. She got to sing with her best friend on Evanescence-inspired tracks that actually rip. She married her leading man. She did it. I genuinely admire that so much. I’m gonna invite all my former vampire kid friends over to watch it. Thank you for bringing this into my life

O
Olivia · February 15, 2026

On one hand I'm laughing at this same as everybody else, on the other I really commend Shayne for putting in such effort to follow through with her writing/twilight adjacent dreams. Like she asked her crush to be in a movie with her and he said yes? And she married him!? And she got her own friends to act in her movie? These are all commendable to me bc as a Twilight obsessed tween/teen I had ZERO fucking friends I could have asked to be in a movie with me and the boy I liked at the time called me a fat dyke when he thought I couldn't hear, so he probably would not have been in my theoretical movie either :') So in my eyes, the eyes of a former teen loser, Shayne Leighton is cool as hell.

This is a ridiculous thing to get hung up on but it is hilarious to me that Spoon River only has one church. My dad's town of 5k had at least 5, not least because you'd have rival sects from the same broader denomination on the same block. Either Spoon River's got pretty bad population drain leading to all the churches closing or Walter's crazy preaching has swayed the whole town into following his church.

The goth go-go dancer makes me think of the disgusting club in the MST3K episode Hobgoblins. I haven't been able to stop thinking about this. Haven't watched the movie yet (the DVD is on its way to me) but I just love that it exists. It reminds me so much of the self-insert Twilight fantasies I had as a teenager, except I never turned mine into a movie – which makes Shayne so much cooler than me! I think it's so cool and impressive when teenagers have so much drive to make art. It's really charming to me how this story seems cobbled together from a lot of individual scenes the writer thought would be cool, because that's just how fantasizing works. Olivia is happily evil in one scene and sad about doing harm in another because both are cool scenes! It just wasn't really worked into a coherent story because the writer was 19 (or, realistically, even younger while writing it if she was 19 during production.) I see so much potential in all these snippets of themes that could be made into a really good and interesting story. Part of me wants a remake, I keep fantasizing about THAT now! A moody dark romance about cycles of abuse, whether you can change fate, perceived or supernatural... But also, no remake would have the charm of this movie! It's so interesting in its own way and I think I love it. A more professional movie wouldn't have this "I'm thinking about my self-insert Twilight OC instead of paying attention in class" energy. I'm so excited to watch the movie, and the full video!

30:53 i'm fairly sure that what she means by 'nuance' is whatever the american equivalent to the british 'trifle' is, like a brush off of a trivial thing in a "'tis a mere trifle' kinda way. maybe something like 'pff, details' would be closer to what i think it's supposed to be? and i think you're right that she just didn't know what nuance really meant and maybe associated it with similarly sophisticated words like trivial?

W

M
Magistrissa · February 15, 2026

Omg I came to comment the same thing- my dad's town of 5k (the county seat and they had a teacher's college) had like 6 at least. Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, ECLA and Missouri Synod Lutheran, Congregationalist, and then the spooky revivals at the camp ground that rotated through the small town circuit. And that's from an era where most people spoke English- in earlier generations, you'd have the Swedes and the Norwegians with different Lutheran churches in the same sect on the same block because that's the language of services. The Czechs and the Poles split off their Catholic churches in my hometown back in the day for the same reason, though with population drain the churches often merge or close over time.

I'm only 1 minute and 46 seconds into The Incubus and it's already delivering on so many levels.

A
April Feldman · February 12, 2026

I am so pleased that I paused this video 2 minutes in, watched the entirety of the Incubus, and then came back and finished this. On the costumes- maybe it was an east coast thing but I knew several people in the early 2000s- especially theater kids- who dressed a lot like Marnie. There were a lot of boutique stores that sold lacey fingerless gloves and sort of creepy-french-doll fashion. It was sort of like the mori girl aesthetic- but with some skulls, dolls, and ruffle collars thrown in. I swear I had a tunic dress with a massive doll face on it and the eyelashes were bedazzled. The fashion in this movie was sooooo good! And the goths were great! I love how Raphael’s gloves have MASSIVE buckles around the wrist- it makes them more noticeable and really emphasizes how he has to take precautions to limit himself in order to interact with her safely. I was quite confused when Johnny started shouting at Marnie about how Chris had been asking for her- tbh my impression at the very start of the film was that maybe Johnny was interested in Chris and Marnie was sort of dragged into knowing Chris as an unwilling wingman of sorts. Their conversation in the car where Johnny is really pushing Marnie to go with him to support Chris read to me like “hey I want to go to this thing to support my crush but it might look weird if it’s just me and also I’ll feel awkward being there alone so pls pls pls come with me.” But then he so clearly doesn’t care when Chris starts getting close to Michael, so I have no idea what the friendship-trio dynamic is meant to be. But: when Johnny started shouting at Marnie about Chris dying, I could see it working if the film had leaned more into Marnie using Raphael as a coping mechanism. Like we know that Marnie has horrible nightmares, and we know that Raphael can MAKE her sleep by draining her energy (there’s that one scene where she says she wouldn’t be able to sleep, and then Raphael says he can help and completely knocks her out without her input). So if Marnie, wanting to avoid nightmares, was getting Raphael to knock her out more and more and she was sleeping for these long 12 or 14 hour stints, I could see her friends getting frustrated if they were unable to get in contract with her for hours at a time, even when she knows that time-sensitive emergencies may be happening. But, as the movie stands, Johnny’s words and actions just make no sense lol. Also, why was there one shot where Johnny was wearing little-to-no makeup and wearing, like, a soft blue and yellow plaid shirt? Did I hallucinate that? He's calling Marnie in that scene, so I imagine it's just after Chris died... but then when we next see him he's wearing a new outfit and a LOT of eyeshadow, so was he, like, angrily doing his makeup and hair after his friend died? I have so many thoughts! I think it’s a bold choice for them to have just made Raphael, like, completely evil? I’m not sure if that was meant to be the take away…. but I feel like with a slightly different direction this could have been a very depressing thriller about a young woman suffering from abuse at the hands of her uncle and falling into a supernatural abusive relationship that dooms her to an eternal half-life where she will forever be cut off from her true emotions. And then Raphael himself is perpetuating the cycle too- he might resent being tied to Bianca and how she resurrected and transformed him, and yet he will do it to Marnie and put her through unending suffering as well. I think that the clunky writing, editing, and acting made it quite enjoyable even though the story was rather grim. And Bianca was amazing every time she appeared. I love all the music and music videos! I am excited to add them to my playlists!

Kind of fascinated that evidently the plot is twilight inspired but there’s more going on with Marnie personally than Bella and yet if you remove Stephanie Meyers load-bearing Mormonism there’s not really any forbidden romance element left, like you can just sleep together the only thing stopping you is the guy’s hot goth sister and it’s like she’s not an actual threat really. So crucially the lead romance becomes it’s just some transfer student guy you dated in uni who turned out to be an abusive dick who strangles people at the first sign of conflict. I think I get the allure Jenny this movie is incredible. It’s a rich text and the music is good actually as a former teenage girl who loved evanescence.

So much of this movie feels like something that makes sense when written in text as something you'd see on ao3, but just completely collapses when you actually see it live. Fainting scene transitions in a written work? Yeah ok sure. The author doesn't know how to move on so we'll use that. I can accept that. But in a *movie*, it's so much goofier. I think the kind of stories people write at this age are fascinating, a published example is Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls, which he wrote at 18. It also involves sexy vampire gothboys, and I remember the now middle aged author, saying his angsty orphaned vampire character, Nothing "needs to mow a few lawns." But you get characters named Ghost with translucent skin and white hair and pale blue eyes and they're kinda psychic. Surprisingly this character isn't a vampire (or a ghost) but he meets vampires, which also look extremely cool. Not ragging on the book, it's pretty good

Also I know he sucks, but I kinda love Johnny, he's iconic. His makeup is everything I wished mine could've been as an emo tween, and I love that he chose to do like, a half-hearted Jersey accent sometimes? Obviously a loving homage to MCR. I wish the movie had shipped him with Bianca just because I think it would've been extremely funny.

S
Silky · February 12, 2026

You're so right actually, it would be so fun if he had some kind of frenemy sexual tension with Bianca. Maybe falling in love with a guy that kinda sucks would be what she needs to rediscover her humanity? Jianca 5ever

the Walter performance is so fucking insane, absolutely amazing stuff. I also think it's really funny that Walter has that cartoon Southern accent even though his brother who was presumably raised in the same environment just talks like a normal person in the flashback

Katrina Kaufman · February 11, 2026

The scene where Johnny punches the sign, of which we can only see the word "End" is such a beautiful case of foreshadowing Johnny's untimely demise! Obviously we now need zero in-universe explanation for his random death at the hands of the hero. 10/10 no notes.

It does not matter at all, but the plural of "incubus" is "incubi" lol

S
Silky · February 11, 2026

She says both incubuses and incubi in this video, I assume she doesn't care. And grammatically I do think it makes sense if you're using something as an English word to also use an English plural instead of a Latin one, though that's just my vibes-based approach, I'm not a linguist. I think she could also throw an "incubussies" in there just for fun and variety!

S
Spublii · February 11, 2026

OH but your Nastiness! This was great! I am very excited for the full release!

S
Silky · February 11, 2026

I think the reason Raphael kills Johnny is just to make him actually scary and dangerous, and thus thrilling as a love interest in this kind of story. It's like you said about Damon in the Vampire Diaries video: if he's a good guy for too long, he becomes boring and unsexy. Where's the danger in our edgy dangerous romance if our dreamy boy isn't dangerous? I think in this movie, it would work better tonally if the main character wasn't revived – it would be a love story about a love that is doomed from the start because the world is bad and the love interest, even though he loves her, is still a bad guy. She represents good things being snuffed out in the bad world and he can't save her because he's part of it, and there's no way the story could go where they'd be a happy couple. But then he does save her and idk are they a happy couple now?

.
.RAWRfile · February 18, 2026

I imagine their characters would have also gotten divorced down the line. I would love to hear your thoughts though, maybe there's hope for them yet, I love thinking about what happens after the credits roll. My friends and I were talking about how funny it would be if Marnie got up and used her new ghoul powers to revive Johnnie , and then those two continued to banter for the rest of time, much to the annoyance of their new edgy broodmates.

one of my favorite classic bad YA media things is when they put characters in college even though it doesn't make any sense, because i think it's at least partially because they thought it'd be too risque/sad to put minors through such terror and/or sexual situations. my favorite example is that awful Beautiful Disaster book where all of the college characters eat lunch in a single cafeteria but also have to hold their insane fighting ring in one of the campus buildings because i'm pretty sure the main character doesn't have a car

K
Kyle Perry · February 11, 2026

This is awesome. Hugely entertaining. I love that she’s the star & her best friend plays the villain. Johnny’s acting is incredible. When he puts out his hand to shake the Incubus’s hand is my favourite part. I love the background lore they spent time to create, especially the in-universe newspaper article, I can imagine her at her 2010s colourful-plastic computer writing it & dragging the pics into place. I’m glad you gave us the heads up about the costumes. Kept thinking about it whenever they were on screen. I also couldn’t stop thinking about the 8-member student body. I don’t love the magic system though, it’s pretty bland & confusing, or at least for it be more immersive you’d need a Czech model with a bit more presence & charisma. I did like the swimming pool scrying’s sympathetic link to the skylight. But magic system needs heaps more work for the stakes to feel earned I had to turn away from the screen whenever the abusive uncle was speaking because the second-hand embarrassment of his accent was just physically too much to bear. I had to go back & watch the overheating sheep. It made me laugh so much, but also he’s genuinely panting 😮‍💨 but he was probably also taken out by the extinction-level incubus attack Thank you so much Jenny, this rocks!!! 10/10

I am so pumped! I'm only a few minutes in but it already reminds me of the book The Prophecy of the Stones, which was written by a 13 year old who got maybe too much publishing support for what was ultimately a pretty mid book outside the context of the young writer. It's important sometimes for young people to be enabled to create weird bad art, imo. ETA: Actually Jenny, I'll give you this one, I also thought those two bald men were the same actor.
