Jenny!!! MacDonalds in Germany has lots of vegetarian / sometimes even vegan items! You should check it out next time you're around. (Burger King is better in the vegan department though 😎)
I ate mcdonalds there! I try to look for one whenever I'm in another country lol. I got a vegetarian sandwich and it was really good. Netherlands and France McD also had lots of veggie options. Here it's basically nothing, just french fries and other sides. And Japan was the same as here but did have really good dipping sauces for the fries
Pulling up to the wake with my colorful assortment of gelatin piggy pops
omg when you said gushers make a huge mess before you explained i pictured you just were eating them in some insane way that caused you to get them everywhere, tbh when i eat gushers i will just take the whole mini pack and eat them all at once so i dont notice that problem in the small packs but the bigger ones yea they are unpleasantly sticky thats why i eat the small packets like that lol
i love flutter ponies SO MUCH i recently got my first flutter pony, a wingless rosebud, for i think $10 (she is pretty dirty and her hair is gonna need some work) i plan on cleaning her and making/buying some replacement wings for her after i move in late summer and im so excited ughhhh. i agree with your takes on the so soft and flutter ponies being so fragile and easily "ruined"/broken, it makes me sad </3 my first g1 ponie is a sosoft and she is actually in pretty good condition, though she for sure isnt 100%, she is missing flock in a lot of those key places you mentioned and its a biiiit yellowed and dirty but i love my shady <3 maybe someday i will deflock her and bask in her neon pink glory
I come back to this ramble all the time. It's especially peaceful and pleasant to me
This is how I learn that my favorite plushie as a child was/is a Puffalump!!! My brother picked him out for me at a garage sale when I was 2 years old, and I still have him and never knew what he was! They're made from this really soft, lightweight, and yet fairly durable material and they are sooooo comfy. I must go find more Puffalumps.... mine must have a friend......
panicked over impressing the boss at my big dinner party but then the tv plays the happy hot dog man ad
i loved the creepy crawlers commerical as a kid. (i was a boy so target market), but the song was so fun, it still would randomly play in my head as an adult. it's a very oingo boingo sound.
I feel like Tuckerbag would casually say some pretty shocking things about Aboriginal people.
AAAAA YOU WATCHED THE HAPPY HOT DOG MAN!! THAT ONE HAUNTS ME EVERYDAY. I've showed it to all of my friends ever since I saw it on Teen Nick years ago.
My grandmother calls Miracle Whip "salad dressing "
Souper bowl is always in autumn.
A helpful thread for finding salad barsas in socal https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLosAngeles/s/IO6FnBPScW
We had a supermarket in the UK called Safeway and their cafe had a kids seating that was little toadstools tables and chairs. I had most of my birthday parties when I was a child.
I too have *strong* opinions on the quality of various french fries. future ramble?!
Oh hey, another person who loves the Subway white American cheese. I *loooooooove* that cheese (although I put it on a ham sandwich).
I was forced to know that the Super Bowl always happened in January, especially by the time I was born, the end of January and beginning of February, because my birthday was often overshadowed by the event. I remember everyone forgetting my 4th birthday because of the Super Bowl. Since 2005 its been exclusively the first Sunday in February so I haven’t had to worry as much about it landing on my birthday, but I’ll never forget that it’s at the end of Football season for that exact reason.
Did patreon get rid of the project to tv button??
Did Jenny ever post the Christmas TV playlist? I'd love to have that for the holidays
My sisters had Glow Worms and they were...sort of snuggly? The head was hardish like a cabbage patch doll. The body was nice plush but housed the battery pack that contained at least 2 D batteries. So the Glow Worm also made a sturdy club.
Sweet Pickles was an old kids book series from the 70s! My mom had a bunch of the books from when she was a kid that she used to read to me.
Are you looking for a Moldamatic machine to use or own? Because the Milwaukee County Zoo has Mold-A-Rama machines you can use throughout the Zoo.
Im so glad we get to see biggle waggle again
NOOOO SHE NEVER BOUGHT THE PHANPY (it's ok the decision paralysis with regards to major purchases is SO real girl)
Weirdly enough my wife and I just watched this video and her friend is selling a Grubby and Teddy! She's in the LA area maybe you'll see it for sale.
For the record the internet horror ramble is one of my recent favorites. Just watched it again
ON GOD, NO WAY THE PUFFALUMPS CAPTIONED A MUSCULAR, HAIRY MAN WEARING A SLEEVELESS WRESTLING OUTFIT "BEAR HUG". 100% they knew!!
finally, a jello mold for men (filled with mayonnaise)
"Welcome the yuletide season with delicious apple dip..." "OOH" "Bring out the flavor of chopped apples..." "YES" "...and onions with delicious..." "YES" "...Kraft mayonnaise-" "NOOOOOOOO"
Ah, what a walk down memory lane. You made me so nostalgic for the commercials of the 70s and 80s. When we all used to watch broadcast TV, and we all saw the same ads. I do not remember Pillow People at all; I only remember Pillow Pets! I do remember kids I babysat for having the Gloworm toy; very cute. I know someone on our street had an Inchworm, but I never had one. I did have a Big Wheel, though!
I’m super late to this, but Jenny was saying that the second puffalumps ad seemed like a death rattle and a drastic rebranding. But the ad was for the Wild Puffalumps, one of the sub-brands of Puffalumps. They were the New Wave, Madonna, party girl Puffalumps. I was actually in my 20s when the ads were out 🤦🏻♂️ but there were lots of sub-brands and each had a distinct vibe. Also the ads continued into the 90s.
There is a souplantation under the name "sweet tomatoes" in Tucson. To my knowledge it is the only one currently running but they serve all the same stuff at the same quality. The main positive of my move to arizona.
Some of the food adds were tickling the top of the eldritch horror that was the creative cooking campaign post WW2 America. Recommend that rabbit hole but vegetable bbq sauce crab meat soup is like mid tier weird for them fair warning.
So true about the Creepy Crawlers marketing. I always felt this weird disconnect as a girl when all the toys for boys were marketed on ~grossing out your sister~ or something. Like, it made me feel bad, but also like I couldn't buy the product because it'd be bad for me to have it, which is just incredibly short-sighted marketing. (And I doubt encouraging boys to see girls as wimpy targets for pranks actually boosted their profits, so it's just alienating buyers for no reason)
The McDonalds land stuff really brings back a lot of memories. Especially the T-shirt. I had a coloring book from the bicentennial as a really young child that had the same art. Talk about a great ad campaign. They made me a rabid consumer at that age. Its ok to be nostalgic for something you never experienced. They definitely made it something kids wanted to explore regardless of when they were born.
I loved the ez bake, because my mom figured out you can just make like I think it was a microwave mug cake mix or something and you can use that, and it was clearly my moms favorite thing to do for/with me because I also had a mini tea set and she would host these adorable tea parties for my best friend and I and we would use the ez bake. Its just a really sweet memory for me because of how into it we all were. I also have fond memories of making the bugs too, they were so much fun. I still find them from time to time haha i dont remember owning the machine though, I wonder if we borrowed one
on the topic of the inchworm physics -- i'm pretty sure there's no mechanical advantage whatsoever added by the hinge. it's basically a scooter / skateboard / wagon with an extra way to put energy into a non-forward direction. that doesn't make it a bad toy -- kids should have fun ways to exercise and build coordination -- it's just a bad transport system.
every pumpkin patch is the site of a great tragedy
Wow, so many cabinets of memories were unlocked for me just now. Puffalumps!!! Aw~ the Wild ones were based on or in preparation of an animated short they put out. But yes, they were short-lived. And apparently, they relaunched somewhat recently and look completely different. America’s idea of cute has evolved over time. Having moved to the States from Korea, in the 80s, I found most children’s toys attempting cuteness grotesque or scary. But now, though things are cuter, they feel more flat also. Like things look more Asian cute and not original. Anyway, My Little Pony was definitely always cute. And I remember the fancy girls in the neighborhood who had the Flutter Ponies. I still have my nursery set! Please do a video on the rest of your list!
The Domino's thing is so funny because I legitimately had a situation where I ordered a perfectly fine pizza from them and inexplicably they sent me an email apologizing for messing up my pizza and offering me a coupon for a free one. So I used the coupon later and it happened AGAIN. Fine pizza, no issues, but they send me an email like "We're so sorry. Have a free pizza."
Jenny I think the point of the smoky the bear one IS that the lady is sexy/seductive so you would be listening more, and you wouldn’t listen to smoky the bear because he’s not a hot lady. Not relatable for many people, obviously
jenny looking at the creepiest ad i've ever seen: wow this is so cute!!
This was so fun to watch. 🥹🥹Evidently she might not think so but this is main channel worthy!
So Soft Ribbon 🥹🙏 one of my favorite ponies!!
Also, fun fact, there is actually a "girl" version of the Creepy Crawlers machine called Dolly Maker! It's pretty cute, there are a couple different sets, some with removable clothing that you make with the goo, some with real hair and some with bendable wires that you would put into the mold before pouring the goo (so that the doll would be bendable). I believe Mattel made both Creepy Crawlers and Dolly Maker in the 60's, but Toymax is the company that made them in the 90's. I didn't know about the 60's versions until just now, I had no idea this kind of gimmick went back that far! There's a whole site dedicated to these kinds of toys called Patti Goop and it's very fascinating, it looks like they even sell replacement goop to use with old machines!
Have you seen the new Gusher's Halloween short film / commercial that references the old one in this video?? It's on YouTube and it's called "Fruithead".
Thank you for the Halloween TV playlist! I just had it up at my party and people were enthralled by it
The second time, the aliens are singing, "International House of Pancakes, just for the fun of it." Idk what they're saying the first time.
This is so funny! It really does sound like aliens, but I think it's just a very tiny child singer and bad audio equipment. I have similar recordings of my kid singing when he was about 3. And I think the first bit they're saying "International House of Pancakes Mm mm mm!" but I'm not sure about that.
Jenny’s version of Part of Your World: 🎵 I wanna be where the Pillow People are 🎶
Taco Bell's only attempt at having a company jingle being outright Southern Gospel is the most American thing ever. All it's missing is the tambourines for the tac-tac-taco bell.
JENNYYYYYY YOU ARE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE WITH THE PLAYLISTS!!! Please give us all the links if you decide to omg I need the pokemon TV one. I make similar playlists and you’re right, it’s so so fun!!!
I'm not proud of it, but this video made me realize I'm more of a Nickelodeon distorted-room-with-extreme-colors-and-anti-authority-attitude kid than a talking-trees-and-soft-focus-dollhouse-nurturing-gentle-empathetic kid.
The big ol caterpillar in the back gave me such whiplash. I had the exact one as a baby toy (not gigantic), and I love him dearly. My life is now forever changed, knowing there is a giant version of him out there. Thank u sm Jenny- the amount of time I'm about to put into finding one of these is going to be absolutely criminal
He's made by gund if it helps! I had the normal sized one as a baby too, and saw the giant several times as a toy store display piece and coveted it. Decided to hunt it down as an adult. It's like my worm grew up with me
I would LOVE links to like ALL of those playlists please!!!
During the so soft pony, commercial, I swear to god, the background chorus.Says, I love my pony. It's so fucking soft and i've listened to it like seven times and I can't figure out what the hell the word is supposed to be.That isn't the f word because it only sounds like that to me
We went back and watched it after this comment, and I think the chorus says "It's so soft to touch"
I also have the “My Pet Monster” which is a super high quality stuffed animal, still looks brand new - y’all should check that old commercial out for a kick.
I've had the jingle in my head for decades. It's extremely sticky.
I have that elephant “wild” puffalump, lol. It still looks great, though I no longer have its glasses.
As a Marylander that crab dip looks FOUL
My grandma died during covid but Souplantation is still the saddest loss
i got secondhand heart-aglowness watching the reaction to the Fun Fruits trees
puffalumps are like a pillow that always stays blissfully cool. so soothing
There was actually a home movie tie-in with the Wild Puffalumps if you can find it. I used to watch it all the time as a kid. It was entirely to sell the glasses that the Puffalumps wore.
I had the inchworm! I remember he was fun, and I did indeed love him. As I recall, it really wasn't that hard to get him to spring back up, but yes, he didn't go very far on each pulse. As for the jingle, I think the "Inchworm, inchworm" was actually an old-timey song. My mom used to sing it when I was inchworming around, but I feel like the only words she could remember were "inchworm, inchworm". Now I'll have to try and find that song on Spotify.
Found the song! By Danny Kaye, and now I remember Mom singing the next line, "measuring the marigolds", but that's definitely all she knew. Not exactly the same song but close enough that I feel like if this ad came out today, there would be copyright litigation and a settlement.
I had a Puffalump when i was a kid and i think the reason they didn't last was they were an absolute fire hazard. The shell was made out of this really thin nylon fabric that would melt it with any kind of heat. Mine melted in the car.
I thought you had a new video turns out it was a dream
OMG I had the sweet pickles bus but never knew what it was! I have no memory of getting it, but that was where we kept crayons for my whole childhood.
Some areas have Horse/Pony Cycle rentals. (I too have Horse Cycle dreams, but sadly there are not any rentals local to me.)
Here in Brazil (at least where I live), Knorr is a pretty relevant packet seasoning and instant soup brand, though I don't really like their soups. Interesting to learn that they're apparently obscure where Jenny lives.
Oh that's so interesting to hear! It's a German company that's oretty much ubiquitous here in Germany, I always have Knorr products in my cabinets.
Trader Joe’s has solid sour candy options, the strawberry belts and Scandinavian Swimmers are good strong sour flavored sour candies.
As a non-American, this is the first time I heard that Miracle Whip is mayonnaise. I always thought it was whipped cream
As an American, so did I! I think I've only ever really heard about it not seen it in stores by me. I think I just mentally put it in the same category as cool whip (which is actually whipped cream).
re: puffalumps I think they had a pretty good run - I searched on ebay and was reminded of the Barney one; a kid I babysat had one. That was probably the late 90s? The thing is, it's such an easy toy to replicate, Fisher Price wasn't going to corner the market on stuffies made out of windbreaker material. Which is probably why they shifted into branded versions.
The floppy/oil soaked fries are my favorites. I will eat them for everyone so y'all can enjoy the crispy guys.
As someone who was and largely remains a boy, I am slightly offended by the idea that I'd prefer to have rubber bugs than cupcakes. But then I clearly missed a few days of Man Academy because I also know more about Jem and the Holograms than I do football.
I think this is a good place to say that my grandma had a recipe in the 50s that used Miracle Whip in a cake instead of eggs and oil. The thing is, its actually pretty good! Its rly moist and yummy, been our family's birthday cake of choice for 3 generations
Mayo is eggs and oil so it tracks that miracle whip would work too. Plus or minus the miracle part.
For anyone interested this is the Australian voice-over of a sizzler ad from the 90s. Confused me very much seeing the 80s American one in this video. https://www.google.com/search?q=sizler+australian+ad&oq=sizler+australian+ad&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIICAEQABgWGB4yDQgCEAAYhgMYgAQYigUyDQgDEAAYhgMYgAQYigUyCggEEAAYgAQYogQyCggFEAAYgAQYogTSAQg0MzMwajBqNKgCALACAQ&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:2285cf87,vid:GweOAt8I_mk,st:0
Hey Jenny, I’m gonna do something illegal here- I watched “the state of internet horror” and I was wondering if you have played Inscryption? I think you’d enjoy the spooky.
soup n fresh replaced the soup plantation in my city. also i got moon shoes as a kid and i remember i loved them and i’d jump in one place for 10 minutes. now that i’m remembering it better, around my 4th or 5th time i felt a heavy “what am i doing” feeling and never put them on again.
Had to look it up but Hickory Farms were running year-round stores in malls all the way up to 2000 apparently
'An interesting spread' makes it sound like even the guy who had to write a script for the commercial was skeptical. 'Seriously? That's where we're at, miracle whip and apricot preserves?'
Jenny have you seen Freddie Frog?? I think you'd LOVE Rosie the Loch Ness monster, shes so cute. The movie itself is super weird.
We had a Hickory Farms store in our mall and I loved going through it when I was a kid, for the free samples. My mom wouldn't let us go in all the time, which as an adult I realized was because she didn't want me using them for samples when we weren't going to be buying things haha.
My sisters definitely had hard plastic 'action figure' versions of the Wuzzles. I remember them being...Care Bear sized which provides no helpful context.
Shop Goodwill has two Grubbys up for auction at the moment AND a third action figure set with a tiny plastic Grubby. If they have two right now, they'll probably have more throughout time. My only tip about SG is to factor in shipping cost before bidding. Its not uniform. https://shopgoodwill.com/item/244028677
My siblings and I somehow got a pair of moon shoes when we were kids, probably from my grandma who found them at a yard sale years after they stopped making them, and i can confirm, we hated them. We all were so excited to use them for like .3 seconds and then all felt like we were going to die while wearing them. I dont even remember what happened to the pair, cause all i can remember is them being around the house for like two months and then they disappeared and no one cared.
I can't remember if my comment saved before, but there are still Mold-a-Matics at the OKC Zoo!
Before you even mentioned the gender aspect of the creepy crawlies I thought about it!! I took a media literacy class last semester and we watched a very similar commercial/product where the entire selling point was to gross out your sister and mom LOL
Heaven being a "misty abyss" with talking trees "as far as the eye can see" is amazing. I sure hope thats what I open my eyes to when I wake up in the afterlife.
Those damn liberals, radcalizing MY kids cuisine penguin.
me frantically sweating at the Kids Cuisine 1994 Annual Shareholders meeting, desperately explaining that the penguin had already been fascinated by the writings of Emma Goldman and the concept of Propaganda of the Deed even before I joined the firm and DEFINITELY before the highly publicized Nugget Liberation Front bombings of '93
All those old Kraft commercials have people sawing veg with dull knives, and I want to scream at the screen to sharpen those knives! (Also use a proper chef's blade, not some peeler!)
The man who voiced the Levi's commercial is Ken Nordine! He did an experimental jazz album in 1966 called Colors where every song is about a different color and he describes all of them in this avant garde spoken word poetry style. Very cool to hear him just randomly pop up in this
AMAAZING ALBUM
Poor Jenny, that pickle bus gave her so much second-hand trauma
If Jenny like tucker bag wait till she see H-E-Buddy!
The amount of joy from Jenny at those wiggling fruit trees is so infectious xD I'm a little sad that I don't really know any of these ads, being Dutch myself, but I do definitely recognize the vibes these ads bring from back in the day!
PLEASE WE NEED THE POKEMON TV PLAYLIST
Oh my god, the Party Animals commercial was a blast from the past; I saw the mosquito and immediately thought “wait, I’ve seen this before!” Turns out there was a bonus feature from a DVD of A Bug’s Life or something featuring a bug named Fleebie and it was literally the exact same hand puppet! Totally forgot about that until I saw this ad, lots of good memories watching that with my sibling
As a child, I remember thinking Sizzler was the pinnacle of being a high-powered business lady. Like success was being a lady in a suit going to Sizzler. Also, Wuzzles was also an animated tv show and I was OBSESSED with it.
Here’s a super nostalgic animated PSA from my childhood. It looks like it was specific to my home state but it fits with the vibes! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QvltSMjZ328
I've been watching Murder She Wrote on DVD and though I bought it like 4 years ago, all the ads are the same as they must have been when the DVDs were first made and it's made me really nostalgic for the good old days of DVD ads for random movies and shows. COMING SOON TO DVD AND VIDEO is burned into my brain. A deep voiced man is telling me about the Columbo box set and how it includes ALL of the TV movies. All is right in the world. Started a new disc tonight and saw the ads and came back to this video because it's a similar vibe of enjoying the enthusiasm and camp of old commercials. Great ramble topic!
Jenny, Souplantation lives on as Soup N Fresh in Chino Hills, CA. It is EXACTLY the same. Please don’t reject your destiny. It is never too late.
The sunkist laughing trees deeply disturbed me
I feel so seen by this McDonaldland take. I also have always loved Mcdonaldland while simultaneously not liking McDonald's. I also am obsessed with the Monster Cereals universe but that cereal is inedible.
"I've never had such a cheese". - Shakespeare
Next wedding I pull up to better have Piggy Pops
Omg I laughed with glee when I saw this was 2 hours long
You're so good to us, the playlists too! PURE GOLD.
I was preschool aged when the Sweet Pickles ad was airing and I really did think the bus with characters would come to your house if you ordered it
Love the sheer quantity and variety of worm in this video
That Sweet Pickles ad is an all-timer because it leaves you wanting more. It gets you to want the plastic Sweet Pickles bus, and its contents, treating it as special. But it doesn't make sense unless you know the product. There was a whole line of Sweet Pickles books with artwork by Richard Hefter who also did Stickybear, which was a video game series, not dissimilar to Reader Rabbit which you mention. For the commercial they probably had some rented mascot costumes which were not purpose-built, but it makes you want to see inside that bus. Meanwhile the printed Sweet Pickles books, characters, stickers, and lesson plans, are the real draw IRL. If you want to meet the Sweet Pickles animal friends, the books are how you end up doing that. It's much like the Daffy Duck/WB Catalog ad. At that time the WB Catalog was a magazine in its own right, full of photo shoots of WB's stars with all kinds of merchandise. Really good stuff by catalog standards. They don't say that in the ad, but the real draw here is getting you to look at the actual catalogs. Richard Moll posing with a puppet of his Bull character from Night Court? Batman, Beetlejuice, Little Shop of Horrors, and lots of Looney Tunes ...
Oh wow, I had a glowworm (born in '83), I hadn't thought about that in *decades*.
Same! I think the blanket soft part got worn away and only the hard plastic head survived in the corner of my toy box.
The polyester cord snow tire one has animation that reminds me of this little short from the 70's called The Log Driver's Waltz. Canadians of a certain age will definitely know what I'm talking about.
This is such a joy of a concept and video. I also really wanted that inchworm from the rugrats! I had to settle for simply riding around in a big barbie edition power jeep😔 Now that I think about it they should've done big battery powered mlp trojan ponys. Some of the early ones are invoking a weird vibe that's tough to shake but it's most likely just the ambient cultural state making it impossible to experience whimsy lol
Please talk about found footage horror movies in october. You always say how much you love the genre but we’ve never heard you talk about them in depth
Can’t find a single Obama Ball on eBay. A limited number must have been sold
Ugh I KNEW the iconic Winx Mattel doll commercials would be in the playlist
Jenny - Did you realize that the scarecrow's dance in the Knorr's soups commercial was lifted right out of the classic 1950s movie musical "Singing in the Rain"?
I guess this was before Marco Pierre White became their mascot
James Coburn being the voice of that very first Kraft commercial is absolutely making me lose my shit. What a legend.
this video is so soothing and fun i love it <3 also thanks for making me crave soup
Let Jenny on the Pickle Bus!!!
I think I say this on every video where the Mold O Ramas come up but Jenny needs to take a Chicago vacation because the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry have a TON. So do both zoos. I was just at the brookfield zoo and they even changed out some of Mold O Ramas with Halloween molds. Also just outside of Chicago, the Volo Museum actaully has a section of vintage disneyland Mold o rRmas. Basically Chicago is over flowing with those machines
We need to synthetize "Jenny clapping her hands in delight watching old ads" into capsules and we'll have found the cure for depression.
My sister and I were given a friend’s entire Paradise Estate when she moved out of state. It was so large, we had to play with it in the garage. Like that’s the only place with enough ample space where we could store it. But Texas summer heat be dammed, my sister and I would sustain sweltering temps just so we could play out our pony fantasies.
Every ramble seems to send me down some rabbit hole of a forgotten childhood memory. Now excuse me while I got deep dive into Precious Places
We NEED a 'Jenny Ranks Various Soups' video NOW
We need a 'Jenny Ranks Various Mayonnaise Abominations' video
I would love more vids like this
I also had the same reaction the first time I saw a Quiznos ad LOL i remember being so offended on subway's behalf, even though I wasn't even a diehard subway fan or anything. I just remember being so scandalized that they would brazenly roast another brand.
The Domino’s and Miracle Whip ads commentary has me howling! lol 😂
Unfortunately my brothers & I were the children who were scammed by the moon shoes lol! But we honestly did love them despite many injures. Those things lived in our house for years
The Piggy Baking Mold is something I think would unironically be a big hit with the Millennial / Gen Z crowd
I used to drive past an old dead souplantation on my way to work every day…… forever mourning the loss…..
I'm getting strong "Demolition Man" "wall to wall mini-songs" vibes from the opening ramble about the playlists.
The inchworm was a heartbreaker! If you were a kid like me, larger for your age, it wouldn't work well for you. The smaller kids loved it though!
The song does kind of make it sound like her love for inchworm is unrequited.
Cheese coming in the sausage tube things is beyond the pale of acceptable human conduct. Civilizations have fallen. The library at Alexandria burned. Great people have come to pass. Shakespeare gave us King Lear. Tolstoy wrote Anna Karenina. However, it was not until cheese came in sausage tubes that the world would truly plumb the depths of tragedy.
So when Jenny wishes for a soundstage full of themed whimsical buildings, its a quirky endearing little fantasy. But when I, Ken Brettschneider-
I'd love your take on the Sears air conditioning commercial, because that ad has lived rent free in my head for 20+ years. And as someone whose air conditioner went out earlier this summer during a heatwave, I can't imagine just casually sitting at the table and continuing to read the newspaper while my wife burns to death.
The puffalump commercial!! I was born in 86 and as a child was a puffalump fanatic. My fav was the cat, which I named kitty puffy and literally still have in my garage in the same storage container as my wedding gown because I can’t imagine getting rid of her. They were really soft and satiny and just as lovely as you imagined.
is the scarecrow that only moves when nobody's watching connected to the haunted branch from the last ramble? much to think about.
Oh my god I loved my glowworm, that brings me back! It was so stiff me and my sister used it as a weapon sometimes. Also thank you for taking your time to explain what Soup Plantation is/was because I definitely paused my washing the dishes and went "huh?" when you said you wanted a soup plantation party lmao. Definitely tried to picture something hellish and confusing for a millisecond.
As an Australian born in 1991, but who never saw those tucker bag ads (must not have been a thing in my state), I can say that it's kinda traumatic to see them now, because that same voice actor did a bunch of other work for other companies and ALWAYS did that annoying hyperactive zainy voice.
I'm a child of the '80s, and I had a Glo Worm, and some Wuzzles, and even the Land Before Time puppets, so those were super nostalgic for me. I have no memory whatsoever of the Puffalumps.
The full on nerdgasm over the MLP ad: french kiss
Justice for the puffalumps! My childhood favorite was the horse puffalump. Still display it lol
Jenny dancing along with the hot dog people has made my month.
If you're ever in Tucson, they have the last remaining Sweet Tomatoes (basically another regional name for Souplantation) in the country. It's exactly how it appeared in my mid-aughts childhood
omg SWEET TOMATOES
I saw so many creepy crawlers commercials as a kid, and before you explained it, I had no idea that you make the bugs. I thought the ads were just for pre-made rubber bugs. So all of their ads get a 1 out of ten from me.
Btw who else grew up in Fresh Choice country? (The Bay Area equivalent of Soup Plantation)
You know that part in 30 Rock when you see the world through Kenneth’s eyes and everybody is a muppet? I think Jenny’s world is that but all the inanimate objects have faces.
thank you for the impact sound effect you drop when showing us the dead-eyed stare of the sleepy ponies. it really added to how I felt looking at the thing
there’s something so funny to me about the Kraft ad setting out a jack o lantern on a table with a halloween set for their “spooky halloween treats” only to present like. sandwiches. the classic halloween food. and nothing else
this ramble is making me laugh so much like even more than usual, thank you for that today 🩷 our Souplantation was called Sweet Tomatoes but I think it was the same thing. I miss it all the time, lots of memories there. gonna have soup for lunch now 😝
The jumpscare at 1:05:15 has me rolling lmaoooo
Jenny has a lot more self-control than me, in her position I would 100% be buying all the $20 repro MLP wings lol
Another great ramble! Love any time we get peak nostalgia content like this and ESPECIALLY love rambles where Jenny is able to sneak in extra MLP content. My prized Rosedust flutter pony and her single authentic wing approve! Also I’m obsessed with the idea of a Paradise Estate set up inside a huge lucite coffee table. I found an almost complete one, locally and for a steal and couldn’t resist buying it. I don’t have space to display the full setup, so most of the buildings are stored in a closed with just a couple of the rooms out flanking my pony shelf. Still holding out hope for controversial MLP takes to win one of these days lol
I couldn’t figure out why the pillow people looked so familiar and I remembered that DJ in full house had the window and referenced it in a bunch of episodes! I also discovered they recently revived the pillow people and you can buy the window pillow person on Amazon, sadly no door though
Omg that’s right - nice catch.
Psst did you see the latest Sylvanian Families playset released in Japan... it has a Tree with a Face in it... it's called 妖精の森と魔法のお城 if you wanna look it up!!
Nine days ago, September 22, 2025, IHOP released this commercial, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK1w6q7FG38 . which contains multiple wonderlands of French-toast mesas, spooky forests with syrup-decanter owls, bacon windmills spinning under a sunny-side-up sun, and a warm beach sheltered by pancake umbrellas. Has Madison Avenue gotten a mole into Jenny's inner circle?
sorry to say but tucker bag hasnt existed for like 20 years, but they did have an animatronic tucker bag in the shops, so thats fun.
I tried to find the obamaball on ebay to see if anyone actually purchased it. There's a different better commemorative basketball for obama that's available for like $13 but no obamaball
TIL miracle whip and cool whip are two very different things!
Omg, those Wuzzle stuffed animals or whatever they’re called!! I had the lion/bumblebee one! I remember even from a young age being really confused about what it was. I was born in in the 90s so it must’ve been a hand-me-down from a cousin or something
When the cost of the Obama Ball was revealed, I thought “OMG JENNY COULD GET FOUR SETS OF PONY WINGS FOR THAT!”
I think it's "International House of Pancakes Ooo Ooo Ooo International House of Pancakes Just for the fun of it!" Like I feel like that little interlude can't be words someone would have to make a strong case for it haha
The brusque delivery of "I'm not eating that gay jello" and you hypothetically introducing your boss your nasty house with "Look what you subject me to!" Made me laugh so hard
Special interest buffet mention!! I. need. soup. 🍲
FYI for Jenny and all other salad cravers: Brazilian steakhouses, a/k/a "churrascarias," typically have lavish salad bars, which you can access for $25-$35, about half the price of the full meat buffet.
Unpopular opinion probably but this is honestly my favorite part of going to a churrascaria. They’re always super fancy and usually have a variety of nice cheeses as well. Build your own endless cheese plate!
This is such a niche interest of mine and I never get to talk about it with anyone, let alone hear someone else be as enthusiastic about it as I am. This was such a great watch, oh my god. If you ever decide to drop a sequel I will be sat front and center. 🙂↕️💖
they would’ve sold so many more easy bake ovens if they’d marketed them as unisex. I wanted one so bad, but I was too embarrassed to ask my mom for something pink
Speaking of the easy bake oven/creepy crawlies toy genre, I have a very distinct memory of a similar toy -from like the early nineties- where you would melt ball bearings to make small metal figures. I can't remember what it's called or find it online, but I really want to because there's no way that was even remotely safe for children
I had one of those! I had the girl one called Precious Metals, and you melted little metal balls to make jewelry pendants, and my brother had the boy one that made metal figurines. I remember it being fairly safe as the device would lock closed while heating, and once the crucible of metal balls melted, you turned the crank to pour the molten metal into the mold, but the whole device would stay locked closed until it cooled. It was fun!
Re: Souplanation, have you heard of Soup n Fresh? They're like, replica Souplantations, the one (of two) in Rancho Cucamonga is in an old Souplantation. It's incredible, like going home again.
I love soup n fresh but wholly man are they always packed. It's almost as if the idea of a soup and salad bar buffet could sustain several locations...
As someone who used to watch all the Nostalgia Critic commercial videos, it's so funny how differently they reacted to the Fun Fruit trees. I think Doug made an Evil Dead joke or something and said how creepy they were. Jenny's just like 'omg yaaay! More trees, the more trees the better and the more they laugh the better, and the more scenarios they are in the better!' I actually love this video for its infectious happy energy. I also now want the cream of veg soup.
I think it was folding ideas who called the nostalgia critic a "fundamentally incurious person" or something along those lines which feels pretty accurate😅
Super Bowl is in January—it’s a soupy holiday
The Super Bowl is in februrary so they could be could be eating Valentine’s Day themed soups and stews
I just remembered that I had a So Soft My Little Pony, and I pretended the parts with the missing flocking were wounds that needed treatment!
This has been two great Patreon videos in a row, I guess I just like Jenny reacting to the odd corners of media/pop culture! I don't know if I ever saw ads for them, but I do remember forcing my parents to keep buying me McDonald's food I didn't actually especially like to collect all the toys for the 90s release of The Aristocats, until they got tired of it and asked a staff member if they could find a box with the remaining toy in it. I feel like this one memory is responsible for quite a lot of my personality and feelings about the 90s, Disney, fast food, cats, and my childhood.
There’s nothing stopping an insulted coworker from throwing the entire Fridge Locker into the toilet. You’d have to handcuff it onto the refrigerator to really feel secure.
Does McDonald's not have the McPlant (vegan cheeseburger) in the USA?
Only as of this month, might not be everywhere. Plus their reputation as not veggie friendly for most is going to take a long time to overcome.
Hoping Jenny has seen the Australian McDonald’s ad that’s airing right now inspired by the vintage McDonald’s land comercial but in a don’t hug me I’m scared style
It's not just in Australia -- those ads run before The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball on Hulu, too.
My mom calls my squishmallows puffalumps and I thought she made to at up. Now I know they’re sweeties forced to rock.
I enjoyed party animals and tucker bag having the exact same jingle melody back to back
The Quiznos rat commercials freaked me out to where I didn’t even want to try their food. My family only went to subway
Dying to know which Rugrats episode featured the inch worm. I adore seasons 1-3, but am wondering if maybe it made an appearance in the later years when the quality plunged. Anyone know?
The ep was about them having to traverse a big hot blacktop on a playground (the joke being that for them it was like crossing a desert so the worm was like a camel)
PUFFALUMPS! What made them so 80's is that they were the first (to my memory) plushies made of thin nylon, like in parachutes/windbreakers - so they weren't fuzzy, but they were incredibly light and squishy. I was literally singing the theme song to myself the other day, so this is some kind of synergy. It is a re-worded version of the 1908 song "Cuddle Up A Little Closer, Lovey Mine" and I think that's adorable.
I'm so grateful Tylenol exists so I can enjoy this video
About Mold-A-Rama: You mentioned people have told you they're in Chicago in an earlier video, but I wanted to say that the good ones are at the Field Museum! They have dinosaurs and I think some larger mammals (elephants, giraffes). They're the real deal. There are Mold-A-Rama machines at the Museum of Science and Industry and they even have a little location guide at the info desk, but the wax figures are ugly and weirdly smooth--I think they're using worse, custom-made modern molds.
Having just ordered four appetizer soups as takeout last night, I feel like I would have been the exact target demographic for a soup buffet restaurant and am dismayed at never having experienced it.
Normally there's a little main channel progress update at the end of these, I'm just curious if we might still be getting a video soon? Also found this horrible wattpad-style story turned into a low budget movie on a 4th rate streaming service and my husband was like, "you should upgrade your patreon just to enter it as a suggestion," and it would be so funny, I just might 😅
I also feel the pain of struggling to find properly sour sweets! Here in the UK I found "Super sour lemon balls" at a sweet shop at the seaside and it was so sour I thought it burnt a hole in a tongue! Would recommend
Jenny I had the *exact* same food issues as a kid (and some I still do. ) I still can't eat spaghetti :') I didn't try mac n cheese until I was 25. Also the Levi's guy had a touch of James Earl Jones to his voice.
There are no Tuckerbags in Australia anymore, I hate to break the bad news. They're called Foodworks now so if you come here and find a Foodworks (they're few and far between) and find a really old employee who's been there for at least 26 years, they might really really appreciate your diy Tuckerbag
Everyone needs to watch the Native American in his canoe who comes upon a garbage dump with a tear in his eye... the Irish Rover's Rocker Arm Assembly song is also a must see.
Rites of passage
Ok but like SAME on the Disney-branded Nestle chocolates, this reminded me that I totally got a Mulan one at some point, probably with Mushu on it!? Absolutely hit different!
The YouTube video doesn’t play smoothly in the iOS Patreon app and the video quality in the YouTube app is noticeably lower than Patreon videos playing in the Patreon app
I desperately need someone to edit Jenny's "Sizzler Ad Read" over an actual Sizzler ad.
Jenny, if you haven't already, I would highly recommend you check out the documentary Bathtubs Over Broadway on Netflix! It explores the phenomenon of industrial musicals, which is when, in the 1950s through the 1980s, big companies, like Whirlpool and Pepsi, would commission these mini musicals about their products and have them performed at conferences or corporate trainings. It specifically follows a man who collects rare recordings of the songs. There was one about trucks or something that is literally called Diesel Dazzle! It's really charming and interesting!
this is semi unrelated but does anyone here know about the tangerine bear? that’s perfect bear design to me
Oh man, this just brings me back to my childhood. My brother and I had a Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby, and Jesus, they freaked me out. And, as we were kids, they were not in preistine condition for very long... I remember them stashed away in our closet, Teddy missing his lower jaw and an eye, and Grubby in nearly the same condition. We used to swear that they would talk without batteries or the tapes in them. Whether they did or we were just two kids with overactive imaginations, I dont know for sure. And nah, those things were hard af. Teddy's body was hard, and just essentially the tape player, and the only softish parts of Grubby were his limbs. Also, Souplantation. My mom and I were talking about this the other day, funny enough. I never liked it. She told me a story of when I was like, 5 or 6, we went to one to have lunch or something, and upon walking in and with the full attitude of a child, I apparently said very loudly, "this place stinks! I don't want to eat here." My poor mother having to quickly usher my brother and I out of the restaurant so fast. I still actually like Sizzler. I thought they were dying out, as all the locations out where I live have closed. But dude, they are thriving in LA and the Valley. My fiancé and I go to one in Chatsworth every so often, and it's always busy.
I'm Australian and so I did a little digging into the Tuckerbag thing (I've never seen one so I was interested in where they were located). Unfortunately, Tuckerbag as a brand is no more, they were completely bought out in the 1990's/2000's, so Jenny's dream of visiting a Tuckerbag cannot happen. However! There were apparently Tuckerbag anamatronics at the front of some Tuckerbag stores, so if Jenny ever visits Australia, maybe she can hunt one down in a scrapyard or something.
i always knew souplantation as sweet tomatoes growing up and i was shocked to find out the alternate name when it closed lmao. that was like my favorite restaurant ever when i was a kid……..their chicken noodle soup was kind of unbeatable. i don’t even eat meat anymore but i would if you put a bowl of that in front of me rn :(
Thanks for the playlists! You are too kind are we are not worthy
There actually is a resurrected Souplantation in Rancho Cucamonga! It's called Soup n' Fresh now. Also, WiggleWaggle lying a foot behind Jenny and staring at the ground while she wistfully talks about wanting an inchworm is a mood.
The Teddy Ruxpin just informed me on Teddy Talk to me from venture bros.
In regards to the Quiznos ad, I still think badly of a game franchise because like 20 years ago they did an ad making fun of a competitor's game about how theirs was so much better and I was like "well, I like that game so, you know, you're not driving me to yours."
I didn't even realize my favorite stuffed animal when I was a toddler was a Puffalump until I saw the commercial in this! I must've known somehow because I called her 'Puffy Puppy', but at least this proves that they were still around in the 90s. I got some genuine heart-warming nostalgia from that. 🥹 There were definitely other molds and themes for Thingmakers like Creepy Crawlers! I was a Creepy Crawlers kid (and also alienated by the commercials being a bug-liking girl) and found a dress up doll themed thingmaker in my cousins' basement. Horrible in execution because the dolls were flat on the back and it was pretty difficult to have any color precision with the goo, but at least it gave me more goo for my bugs!
This was such a fun one. I could have watched another two hours of this easy. I completely forgot about the happy hotdog man - I always wondered what kinds of parents were buying that for their kids because I could never picture any of my friends owning one
I cannot express how grateful I am that she posted the list
I recently showed my childhood MLPs to my 7 year old friend, and she was very curious about what the mechanism on the back of the (wingless) flutter ponies was for. Thanks to Jenny I was able to give her a full explanation! She was really fascinated and we ended up brainstorming ways to craft new working wings.
There are some good tutorials online - you can print out templates (or design your own shapes). Cut them out of the dome-shaped top part of 2 liter bottle (I suggest green ones like 7up or ginger ale) and then paint the underside with chunky glitter nail polish. I usually wrap the tab in layers of scotch tape until it's a nice snug fit in the wing mechanism
That door is coming in hot!
NGL I was expecting a China Beach jumpscare at some point....
In the mirror of my mind....
I had no idea that most of those weird infomercial products were actually like accessibility products, but it totally makes sense now.
I'm not from the US, I don't relate at all, so I stopped at 18:02. I know that international subscribers make out probably 5% or less of the totally of Jenny's subscribers pool in Patreon, but it will be nice if once in while she'll do or reference something outside the US bubble.
i'm not from the us either but i don't really get what the issue is? i love learninng about new stuff through jenny's commentary. also, the video topics are chosen by the patreon audience, she doesn't have much influence.
i'm gonna be singing 'international house of pancakes' for weeks
This was an absolute joy to watch, thanks Jenny!
My puffalump head cannon is that they were trying to come off as more “badass” after the Garbage Pail Kids bullied them. They alienated all their friends by being fake and acting entitled, not snapping out of their behavior until the wrestler told the bear they couldn’t be friends anymore.
The Puffalumps got paid and promptly went to The Viper Room to get WILD!, like every other 1980's celebrity.
There are some affordable grubby's on eBay! Have my own teddy ruxpin and now I'm debating getting his friend
I got the mouse puffalump when I was born. It was always my favourite plush!
omg i loved my glow worm so bad. they were before my time but i found him in my grandmas stuff from my dads childhood and i just loved him i can smell his plastic head rn
NO OMG WUZZLES AFTERWARD I LOOOOVED BUMBLELION they had an awful boring cartoon about them lol
Obi-Wan: Anakin, look at this attractive woman talking about forest fires. Anakin: I think she is a he, and I think he is a changeling. Obi-Wan: In that case, be extra careful.
“I could crouch there” 😂😂😂😂😂
I laughed so hard at that 😂 I didn't even think she meant squatting (as in living there) at first, just pictured Jenny inside a creepy old playset in some abandoned backlot. Crouching
I think I had an earlier generation Creepy Crawlers machine, because mine looked like a black cauldron with a top like bubbling liquid inside.
sometimes i forget how hard i repressed being trans. when i was a little boy i wanted an easy bake oven sooooo bad, but i knew i wasnt allowed to ask, it just seemed so much fun to make a cake myself haha. like damn i was always feminine
I wanted one too, but in my case it was just because of how much I loved cake.
The piggypops are great, of course, but that is some very elaborate marketing for some silicone baking pans.
I live in Florida, and still use Parkay regularly.
That Kids' Cuisine song is from an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, isn't it? Evita?
Frank Sinatra, "My Way"
Salad and baked potato bar. Also decor you would probly love https://www.yelp.com/biz/steak-corral-whittier
When you said Grubby operates as a parasite to Teddy Ruxpin, I thought you were going to go into an elaborate silly over the top bit. But no, that's just basically the only way to describe how that works.
Sweet Pickles was a book series! There were 26 characters, all animals starting with a letter of the alphabet who had an alliterating personality trait (the goose is Goof-off Goose- she's lazy, for example). The 'pickles' are problems they get themselves into and out of. I had two books as a kid- Who Stole Alligator's Shoe?, about Accusing Alligator, and Zip Goes Zebra, about Zany Zebra.
I loved the Sweet Pickles books! The back of the book had a map of their town, which I studied in detail. The front of the book had pictures of all the characters. Early books depict "Moody Moose" clearly holding a purse and wearing a dress. But by time "Moody Moose Buttons" was published, the character was a male wearing a rugby shirt. Someone must have realized it was problematic to have the "moody" character be a woman.
I got confused because in the Flutterpony commercial I thought it said "No one else likes you around" and I thought it was implying the Flutterpony was the only friend you could trust.
I was proud owner of The inchworm and all I can say is that the inchworm did not propel you forward.
I kinda wonder if that whole making the boy version of a girl toy and vice versa has accelerated or decelerated since the 90s. Seems like Iike more products are targeted to both genders, but as an adult non-parent and non-collector hard to discern.
As a collector, It's a lot harder to even get in the shrinking space between early childhood toys and being abandoned for apps, so besides lego (a whole topic of its own) you see both laser targeting to one group and "everybody can play!" as strategies. With some toys, like mini whatevers and slime kits you can do a marvel one and a frozen one and sell everyone on a minion theme but other more traditionally gendered toys are harder sells. A few years ago monster high tried to launch their third generation with a more gender neutral lean to match strong characterization and world building, positioning male characters not just as crushes, siblings or adversaries but potential central characters in their own right. But fashion dolls are very strongly socially girl coded. Fast forward and production of all male dolls in the line are indefinitely suspended.
Awesome
Novelty kitchen products always wanting to send you free extras is so funny. Who on earth is going to be like, oh thank god they’re sending me three bonus Happy Hot Dog Men! One simply wouldn’t have been sufficient to meet my production demands!
Thanks for the ramble, Jenny!! This was super fun, I really hope you get your inside forest dreams fulfilled someday. Being UK based I wasn't familiar with any of these, except the Disney chocolate bars gave me a PUNCH of nostalgia (I swear the ones we got were tiny though??).
I'm British too, and grew up watching mostly the BBC- which for sure had great programming but I feel I missed out on the commercials...
omg i think the pocahontas chocolate ad was in lindsay ellis’ pocahontas video from years ago! i’m 23 so i think the movie chocolate bars predate me, i had no idea that’s what the ad was actually for. i won’t be able to watch the video the same way now lol
Please release the Christmas playlist as is! Some of the best commercials are ones from local businesses and events.
I think Jenny grew up near where I did, and we’re about the same age, so I also want to see her local commercials, because I’m curious if I’d remember them!
A Tucker Bag plush backpack would be peak
The dramatic sound effects when scary ponies are shown are taking me out
getting an update on the flutter collection is always the best. i could listen to vintage my little pony chatter for three more hours
actual tears in my eyes from the oinking
I can’t tell if anyone else already commented but as I remember it Miracle Whip is without eggs as a less expensive alternative to mayonnaise (with eggs). I think it dates to the Depression era.
It's made with paprika! If you go to fancy restaurants, some will make mayonnaise from scratch right at your table.
Tuckerbag was our local supermarket as a kid! It was a smaller format store so we still went to Safeway for the bigger shops. Sadly both brands now gone. Our Tuckerbag became a Ritchie's. Don't remember them selling any merch but I'm sure they had cardboard versions used around the store.
Also I think Jenny would really love the Gobbledok from Smith's Chips from around the same time
The scary slam sounds to articulate the scary my little pony doll images were amazing
That's not a tucker bag. *This* is a tucker bag.
Ah, I see you’ve played baggy-boxy before!
I have a biggle waggle that I got when I was 2 and I've slept with it in my bed my entire life. When I was a teenager I used to hide money and my ipod in him♥️
I would never disagree with Jenny, but a sandwich just isn't a sandwich without the tangy zip of Miracle Whip, "The Bread Spread," from Kraft.
I need you to see the Texas grocery chain, H-E-B mascot. It’s also a brown paper bag, his name is H-E-Buddy and he just has meat and vegetables as hair with a jovial smile.
Also they make employees dress up as him and it’s just a loose sagging sheet around their feet😆
Paradise Estate Megan foreshadowed the M3gan movie?
I inherited my grandma's blue elephant puffalump, along with all her other plush when she died last year. I have actually been trying for a while now to figure out what this plush is, since the tag is faded I really had no way of knowing... your video helped me identify it so thank you!!!
Thats so lovely! What a precious thing to inherit 😊
I remember seeing the Wuzzles cartoon on the Disney Channel as a kid probably 15 years after the toys would have been on the shelf… I don’t remember a thing about the show itself, but sometimes I still get the theme song stuck in my head.
I can’t be the only person who’s never seen a Sizzler before and assumed based on the name that it was Hooters-adjacent, kind of like a horny Chili’s…right…
Next thing you know, Jersey party at Sizzlers🔥
Oh I used to read Sweet Pickles books that used to belong to my older brother and sister. The art style was so cute and each book was basically A-Z animals doing their character trait through a bunch of wacky situations. Like the Zebra was Zany, the Rabbit was Rushing
When I was a kid, one of my friends has the entire Precious Places town in her basement and I was so strongly jealous of her that I'm still jealous of her to this day, 30+ years later
I wish I could crouch there
the anthemic safeway jingle over footage of a man butchering meat with a bandsaw made me feel indescribable emotions
chat do u think we will get the 1mil sub apple pie tree.......
“But I am curious, I am curious.” 🤔
The Sweet Pickles bus unlocked a memory. I was singing along.
I’m sure there are a few women out there that wished that they built inch worms for adults. 😈 Looks like it would be a fun ride.
Hey, is there an update on how the main channel videos are going? I might have missed it in the run time. Thanks!! This was fun
At last! Closure on Phanpy!
I keep Parkay squeeze butter in my fridge at all times. For buttered rice and tuna sandwiches.
Head's up: https://gizmodo.com/new-jersey-theme-park-puts-animatronic-dinosaurs-on-facebook-marketplace-as-it-shuts-down-2000664489
also watching this while working at Subway it was really funny to hear Jenny shilling for it xD screw you Quiznos!
I was listening to this at work so the screen was off, and the combination of it being a 2000s commercial and the fact they only called the product the Obama Ball made it so I was truly picturing like a Fushigi ball with Obama's face on it.
I've gone on multiple dives for nostalgic commercials because they really are great background noise. I'll be back for that Halloween playlist lol.
Sabrina having to survive Disney, Tall Girl, and a Miracle Whip ad. Girl paid her dues and then some.
Yall... i have Teddy and Grubby in my office! We have the new Teddy too... they discontinued the online features within the first year or two...
I had those LBT rubber toys!!!!
I thought teddy ruxpin was scary when I was little. It looked like a stuffed animal but had all these hard moving parts inside, I thought it was going to break my fingers. My brother and I would dare each other to super fast stick our fingers in or near its mouth.
2 hours !!!!
The thing that isn't immediately clear from the Sweet Pickles ad is that you *do* get to "meet" those characters. It was a book series about a town of anthropomorphic animals ("Sweet Pickles" was the name of the town, because the characters were always getting in a pickle), and the activity packs were all centered around them.
In Australia there's a service called the Reading Writing Hotline and it's for adults who need help with reading, writing, and basic maths. I used to see the ads all the time as a kid. The jingle sang the phone number and it was sooo catchy. "One three double oh six triple fiiive oh six" Also regionally we had an ad for "Maurie Mole" who taught kids not to fall down old mines. "If you see a hole, don't think you're a mole. Walk in the opposite direction and report your detection"
Maurie Mole sounds amazing, very Smoky the Bear coded! We just had a slightly animated skeleton that said "come in and you'll die!"
I am SO jealous because I wanted one of those rubber bug making machines SO bad as a kid but never asked for it because i was embarrassed. the toy gendering in the 90s was brutal and i was a very opinionated 8 year old who was so against toy gendered marketing i would rebel against both sides (but especially dolls and cute things that for the longest time i pretended i didn't like) so i get the alienating feeling. in retrospect it's crazy it took me 20 years to figure out i was nonbinary lmao
one last comment: i laughed at the zoom in on that huge muscled guy with the phrase "bear hug". i really want to know if that was intentional gay humor or an accident
The huge muscled guy looked like he came from the world of professional wrestling, where "intentional gay humor or an accident" is a core value. Good catch!
I went through a phase a few years ago where I would watch long compilations of old TV commercials from my childhood. That phase only lasted a couple of weeks, but, still, I get it.
pillow people is truly giving a kid's version of Date Everything
if you want a nostalgic ad recommendation, there's a patti labelle mcdonalds ad from 1990 that's kind of a bop and SO incredibly late 80s/early 90s
As a kid in the 70s, a neighbor had the Inchworm riding toy. It was extremely cute and compelling and I wanted my own with all my heart. I got a couple of short turns to try it and it was frustrating to ride. Hard to move forward. Practice might have helped. Big Wheel and Hippity Hop were much more fun. I had to ask for turns for those at friend’s houses as well. Would love full size versions of all of them.
Did it have freewheels? I assumed it would have them so it basically ratchets forward as the wheelbase expands and contracts
Daffy peddled the Warner Brothers catalog in our VHS for Batman '89. “You can’t watch a Warner brothers movie without a Warner Brothers ball cap,” he insists. I found scans of the catalog in Google images, and it was honestly kind of awesome lol. THEY HAD CHINA BEACH MERCH!
This was so much fun omg! I do really want to watch the playlists are the links not working for anyone else?
Huh strange they seem not to display consistently on mobile. I edited it to add the links in plain text!
Finding salad buffet lovers like we're displaced refugees. I'm not a vegetarian and I loved Fresh Choice well into college going with true appreciators who either save space to gorge on their muffin selection, or create the most decked out baked potato possible.
feeling so seen, the souper salad was an absolutely mythical location to me every time we would go when i was a little kid
Something very zen about just watching someone watch commercials.
BETTY SPAGHETTY!!!!!!!
Yo Jenny, just a heads up, the links to the playlists are not working, they're just showing up as normal text
This is oddly making me wanna watch a playlist of olden days Christmas themed commercials.
Fyi, someone opened a restaurant styled after Soup Plantation. Called Soup N Fresh. Only one location so far but I hope they expand and reclaim the old Soup Plantation locations. https://yelp.to/OLfP1J702Y
I know where I'm going for my birthday. I'm also assuming the name is an amalgamation of Souplantation and Fresh Choice which is great if this place truly is just a Frankenstein'd restaurant of those salad buffets.
If Jenny ever retires we can be comforted knowing that she is crouched, Gollum like, in her secret plush forest, gnawing on a cheese ball.
I can’t drive so see me pull up to the function on my inchworm ride-on toy 🐛💨
Squeeze cheese was fun, but kind of awful in retrospect. It had a little plastic cap/die that was just stuck to the side. You’d use it as a pattern to stab through the plastic to “open” it so you could squeeze it. It existed at the same time as the cheez whiz in a spray can.
I had a Pillow Fighter as a kid and it honestly was my favorite plush. I used to get nosebleeds a lot as a kid and once got blood right under its nose, as if Pillow Fighter also had a nosebleed. In retrospect, kind of gross, but it meant a lot to me.
Girl across the street had a Grubby and I cannot fully describe how much cooler this was than Teddy Ruxpin. These things are gigantic, especially if you're like, 6, they have multiple legs, it's clearly the best designed character in its toy line.
When Jenny said she would take a Tuckerbag puppet to Australia, I thought, yes, she would be welcomed with open arms here if she brought a Tuckerbag. And then she started doing the bad Australian accent and she was no longer welcome. (/j)
ohhh my goddd i did not know i knew Sweet Pickles but YES i wanted it so bad, and we did get it! As a toddler I could have recited this commercial by heart. Two kids very slightly older than me saying "sweet pickles is great!" was the MOST persuasive thing in the universe at the time. Also, not gonna lie, I absolutely believed it would be delivered by a green bus full of waving animal mascots. But yeah the actual product was was just like, a lunchbox full of flash cards. I wasn't even old enough to be disappointed, though. I was stoked. for what it's worth, i was wayyy ahead of other kids when I entered kindergarten, but i think a lot of that was Sesame Street to be honest. Not sure how much credit Sweet Pickles gets.
Okay that Taco Bell jingle was an instant flashback
1:41:15 Adjusted for inflation from 2008, the Obama ball would cost $120 plus shipping and handling (and probably plus tax too). That is absolutely bonkers.
It'd have been better if he was in the ad, shilling a ball with his face one it. "Let me be clear" as he sinks a three.
Sorry if this is a bit brusque to ask, but is there an update on the next main channel video? I can't watch this full ramble now, but I wanted to skip to the end to see if there were any updates like the Patreon rambles usually have and there wasn't one 😅 (or maybe I just skipped over it somewhere in the 2 hour length of this video). I'm just so excited for both the Barbie vid and the vid about the bad movie that's been a secret 🙂
I'm still working on the bad movie one! Someone was annoyed last month that I wasn't revealing the movie title so I got self conscious about it and cut that part of the outro 😯
Okay Domino's must just have a thing for this because their most recent ad campaign for stuffed crust pizza asks customers to taste test their new stuffed crust and compare it to the old stuffed crust, only to "reveal" that domino's has never had stuffed crust before. All of the customers go "this is WAY better than the stuffed crust I've had from domino's before!" And they're like, hah, gotcha, you've never HAD domino's stuffed crust before. Okay? So you're just pointing out that people get your pizza mixed up with other pizza and have no idea what you sell or which pizza chain you even are? How is that a good way to announce that you're ten years late to the stuffed crust party?
Domino's advertising will never top 80's stop motion mascot The Noid, which they dropped after a mentally unwell man who shared a last name with the mascot felt personally attacked by the ads and took their pizza guys hostage. Fortunately for everyone involved he got hungry and they were able to slip out the back while he was busy eating pizza.
I NEED to serve Piggy Pops at my wedding reception. It’s a deal breaker.
Jenny must’ve been using her all-in-one, foldable and portable Go Grill™️ when she cooked up this whole Man-Sized ramble
“I’m not eating that gay jello!” Had me ROLLING
Also Teddy Ruxpin always makes me remember how my brother had one and one day he thought Teddy was thirsty and gave him a glass of water and it fried the insides so from then on, Teddy was just a very heavy awkward stuffed animal to us.
I can't believe Levis did the How Would A Dog Wear Pants meme 50 years ago.
Well I learned something new about flutter pony poses today! Loved the MLP ads, especially the pretty parlor!
She gets into even more details on Flutter Ponies around 30:00 in the "Jenny's Choice" ramble if you're interested in learning more
Would anyone else share the experience I’ve had of having a TV Teddy instead of a Teddy Ruxpin? I don’t know why I got hyped up to watch TV with a talking bear toy, especially since I remember souring on him super fast. The silver lining is that it introduced me to an animated special called The Railway Dragon, which taught me what an hourglass was. I’ve loved hourglasses ever since!
Oh man RIP Souplantation 😞 I visited some family in San Diego a while back and we ate there and it was amazing. I think about it all the time. Also no one at my job has ever taken my food but I'd get a Fridge Locker just to flex on my coworkers!
They were so soup and salad focused. It really hit the spot often. I definitely took them for granted.
EARLY PATREON VID? God bless
I can confirm the Precious Places playsets were fun. There were a few of those playsets at my grandparents' house growing up, which I'm assuming they got at a thrift store or garage sale since I'm their first grandkid and was born in 2002. I don't think I realized how old those playsets were until I watched that ad, but it unlocked the memories of me playing with them lol
This was incredible. So much of it was just my delight at seeing ads from my childhood, which were obviously superior to ads now on a completely objective level that has nothing to do with nostalgia >.> I had one Precious Places set I got at a really young age, and I remember being in love with it, but I couldn't tell you with a gun to my head how I played with it. I think I was just enraptured by the pretty colors. I also had a Teddy Ruxpin, and I think it's a mark of how utterly the ad campaign bombed that I had never even heard of the thing before my parents got him for me. I loved him dearly, though! I think it was more because the stories were so charming and whimsical than anything (to this day I dream of flying on that airship and visiting the mushroom forest). I probably would have loved the books just fine on their own, but they came with a teddy bear narrator! Yeah, I was sold. I am absolutely going to buy those books again now.
Giving the Kid's Cuisine Penguin a Little Red Book
Yesterday I was watching the "Jenny's Choice" ramble from June 2021 and at 32:30 Jenny breaks a Flutter Pony wing by accident (luckily just a repro wing in that case). I had no idea I was watching a prequel to today's ramble!
$10 down the drain
And this is how I find out that there are no Jason's Deli in California
when i found out soup plantation went out of business i fell to my knees. my friends and i are planning on road tripping to arizona at some point for the sole purpose of eating at the only soup plantation open
A similar chain that I was familiar with is Fresh Choice and went the same way, and apparently the "last one" is/was in Gilroy, CA and I can never tell if it truly closed up or not. Last I heard it was open but just extremely badly staffed and I didn't want to make a road trip if it was a run-down restaurant.
I remember Glow Worms!!! All my teddy bears actually look like bears, so I'd never really noticed. I had some pre-made Creepy Crawlies. My mum played with both "girl" and "boy" toys all the way back in the 1960s. I think my cousins or a friend had Moon Shoes, I don't remember using them much. Wait... Jenny's saying Andor, The Madalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett, don't have the budget of THOSE ads? That's an insane thing to say. I also don't remember Domino's Pizza being bad, which is odd as I'm pretty sure I'm older than Jenny. She should also completely switch over to Bluesky. Why would anyone decent still be on Twitter?
I usually watch your vids before bed but two commercials in and Im thinking this might be a daytime vid. Why are old commercials so ominous 😭
Oh my god I just had an incredibly stressful essay. What a blessing this video is.
I love it whenever Jenny talks about mlp collecting
The level of effort and creativity in these 1970s ads is remarkable
Ah, the days when the words "processed cheese" were a selling point...
Superbowl is in February lol SOUPer far from autumn 🤌
Well the Grey Cup is in fall, so there's a different football championship game in fall...
devastated to find out souplantation went out of business
In Sandy, Utah, there's a restaurant called Dollie’s Soup & Salad that is Souplantation (known as Sweet Tomatoes in UT) reborn—right down to being in the same building.
In middle school, I used to always get the Hickory Farms cheese and sausage boxes for Christmas, and the shelf stable cheese is solid. It's obviously inferior to regular cheese, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it.
I feel like I would have died in the past with how much I hate mayonnaise (and miracle whip). Also why were there olives on all the taco bell food?
Also, as an extremely fearful and shy child who loved reading I absolutely would have loved to look at a bus of mascots drive by and leave me things to read and not have to interact with them.
I was born in 96 but I SWEAR I had a glo worm
Where can find myself those cartoon tires with teeth? They truly are perfect henchman material!
would be so grateful if you’d link whatever ambient TV playlists you’ve put together that you’d be willing to share 👉🏻👈🏻
Thank you for reminding me, I added them to the post!
That Smokey ad reminds me of the Walrus from the Pingu dream episode, which is another example of 90's visuals being super creepy for no reason
Actually obsessed with the trippy Levi’s ad
This couldn't come at a better time, I'm currently waiting to be induced so I can finally give birth and literally the last few weeks I've just been rewatching old rambles to keep me sane.
Hope everything goes well for you and baby!
The commercial I am most nostalgic for is one for a water park kinda near my grandparents house. It's been closed for years and we never actually went, but they riffed on the song Girls Just Wanna Have Fun in the commercial and twenty years later I STILL get the lyrics to the real song wrong and sing about taking the kids to the water park by accident. It only played on local stations so most people have also never seen it - if I didn't have siblings who remember I would think I made it up 😅
I grew up seeing ads for Ontario Place, with the "Kids just wanna have fun" song. For a long time that was the only version of the song I knew!
YAY! 2 hours!
Was just about to go to sleep but now I've got a great reason to stay up for 2 more hours :D
Me every single night!
YIPPEE
I had no idea this won.
New Jenny video on my way home from work?? Yes please!!
Not that it really matters cause it’s a Patreon video anyway but YouTube marked the video for kids 😂
i’m always so happy to see you pop up on here 😩
the lighting looks great!
My friends and I still talk about one from our area, for a water park called "Waterville USA"- "WATER you doing this summer? WATER you waiting for??"
I’m finally early to one!
Peak
❤️
