Ramble: How Disney would ruin defunct rides

It didn't even occur to me until it was too late that they would probably retheme Stitch's Great Escape to Deadpool. He's kind of this generation's "cheeky rascal" character and they would keep the part where Stitch eats a chili dog and then burps on you, and just say it's Deadpool burping on you after a chimichanga (which I believe is one of the unfunny things associated with Deadpool)

I'm new here and realize this is already a year old, but man what a shame on the King Triton Carousel downgrade! Those sea creatures were gorgeous! I am a huge Toy Story fan but would have been way cooler if they found a way to make rideable versions of Andy's toys like RC, Snake & Robot, Lenny, the Shark with Woody's hat...

honestly pivoting and switching between projects seems like the best way to actually FINISH a project and is something i would be better off implementing in my own projects so i respect it.

Ahhh! I thought Alien Encounter was a fever dream! Because I vaguely remembered this attraction and thought it was so cool, and 10,000% didn't feel like I was at Disney at all. But when I went back much later it was Lilo and Stitch branded, and significantly worse. When I was probably, like 8 years old - I remember some river ride where our guide got MURDERED, turned into a skeleton and the boat was hijacked. What happened to good ol' trauma rides. Haha.

Thank you for explaining the deal with Tom! I’ve only followed theme park stuff this closely for the past 3 years and I’ve watched WDWNT every week and known that a lot of people didn’t like him but I had never seen someone say why. It makes sense that he had a reputation that he seemingly tried to start changing around the time I started watching. I also have never used Twitter so if that’s where most of his outlandish behavior has taken place it makes sense that I haven’t seen it. To me he’s always come off as passionate in a neurodivergent way (same) and while I don’t always agree with his takes I haven’t personally seen him say anything (on YouTube since 2023 or at the Muppetvision event I attended) that reflected the reputation I’ve heard about him.

K
Kate · March 28, 2026

12:48 I should do this at my uni for accessibility stuff. Steve Biko lift broken - 3 months! Etc. It's so bad how long they take to fix stuff, nevermind all the stuff that isn't accessible in the first place 🥲 Also this is so random but I adore your eyeliner in this video and it looks great and I wish I could do that (I probably could if I got contacts and practiced a lot but effort)

K
Kate · March 28, 2026

6:43 This is really random but with the terraformed desert thing you mentioned, deserts are really important ecosystems and they're such diverse spaces and are vital for our existence and they're just not pretty in the same way as other things we want to save but they are beautiful. Terraforming them would be a tragedy. Just wanted to say my piece about deserts bc they don't get enough love. It's like how we don't care about insects going extinct as much as bigger/cuter animals but they are very important!! Save our deserts and save our insects <3

a
a.s. · March 29, 2026

im glad you commented this bc i think about it whenever horizons comes up, it's very interesting to me how ''greening the desert''/the idea of terraforming has functioned as a tool of colonization based on assumptions about unfamiliar landscapes. no shade on jenny, just an interesting chance to think about how ideas are presented in utopian scholastic media

This is so specific but rewatching this and having a vivid flashback to being 11 on stitch’s great escape and there’s a part where he burps (?) at you or something and the smell made me really upset and genuinely followed me for the rest of the day. I feel like I can smell it even now

Alexandra Mansen · January 26, 2026

When I was like 6 or 8 I got off my favorite attraction, the laugh floor, and saw stiches great escape with no line and since the building looked similar I begged my Dad to go on it. And there was no one there but my family and it was my absolute favorite thing we did in magic kingdom (other than the laugh floor) and when I found out they got rid of it the next time I went I was actually a bit devastated. So it's wild to know that it actually replaced a objectively cooler more interesting ride.

a

Slightly off topic but combining this post and going back to your previous posts on favorite defunct rides and favorite animatronics: 1) Start by saying I am ancient and as a tiny human actually experienced the original Figment Journey Into Imagination, Listen To The Land, and Horizons. I remember having the soundtrack on cassette tape too. One side was Magic Kingdom. The other Epcot. It also had the original Main Street Electrical Parade (the one with the Moog synths) and it being the most joyous song as a kid. 2) Love your lists and know you aware of the defunct Cranium Command and Buzzy from the old Wonders of Life and wondering your thoughts and where it ranks. It was likely the last great new Epcot experience, unless you accept the new Frozen ride, which I can't since they sacrificed Maelstrom. LOL.

r
rowenna · December 16, 2025

Ok this is off topic but I love your bomberman plushies in the background. I used to love the super bomberman 3 game for the snes and especially the kangeroo character you could ride (I used to call it haasje which is Dutch for little hare but I guess it being a kangeroo makes more sense). Have been looking for a plush of it but haven't found it yet so I might have to get creative and make one myself 😅🐇

omg, you just resolved a confusion I've had for over a decade. I visited DW in the 90s and again in the 2000s. On that second visit, I did the Stitch "ride". Why am I learning of this awful change right now, in my sweatpants, in front of my supplements, instead of being tenderly spoken to by a dear friend, over hot tea? 😫 Also, my friend, Tom Bancroft, legendary Disney character designer and animator (like Mushu), worked on the original version of this ride, which was an alien-escape ride. He told me that he recalls thinking this ride was not appropriate for children, though, as an adult, it was awesome. And he was correct. It horrified children and was shut down and redesigned.

As soon as you put 2017 and fossil fuel alternative together, I knew it would be Elon Musk and Tesla and as nightmarish as the Elon + Leslie Jones combo would be, you're absolutely right and it would've been awful and horribly aged and also very very funny (for the wrong reasons). The updated Country Bears at WDW is OK. The primary change from a tech point of view was going from Analog to Digital. In theory, with the new digital format, it is much easier to make changes to the show. With that in mind, I was hoping they would seasonally bring back the Country Bears Christmas show, but alas, no. I ask about the Christmas show and the cast members like at me like I'm insane. Oh, and getting rid of "Blood On the Saddle" was criminal.

I did a recent trip to Disneyland, and the thing that struck me when you mentioned the PeopleMover is how barren Tomorrowland is with rides over there. Like, it's not *absent* of rides, but between Finding Nemo, Autopia, and Astro Orbiter you have three rides that really aren't worth the waits they engender and just aren't to everyone's tastes, and then outside of that? When I went Star Tours was under refurbishment, leaving the only rides I actually cared to do being Buzz Lightyear and Space Mountain. It's just in such a contrast to Magic Kingdom, where you at least still have Carousel of Progress, PeopleMover, and Laugh Floor, two of which are shows and one of which rarely has super long waits, so you're at least always guaranteed to find something to do. But since Disneyland destroyed the PeopleMover track and decided to inexplicably leave both the Tomorrowland Theatre and Innoventions building vacant....you just have, like *nothing* over there if one of the three rides of value go down. In general I think Disneyland has the upper hand over MK, but Tomorrowland is the one area they're getting their ass handed to them by other parks.

My family and I have only ever been to Disney World once, in 1994, when I was 6. We bought a Pictorial Souvenir book that I still have and I'm super glad I kept it. I would read through it all the time and it breaks my heart sometimes to know that they pretty much destroyed every ride and attraction I remember from this book. I know plenty of them were outdated and in need of repairs or updating, but not all of them needed to be outright dismantled! Anyway, the book has photos of Horizons, ExtraTERRORestrials: Alien Encounters, and lots of the other defunct EPCOT and MGM pavilions!

LOL, Jenny I bumped into Tom Corless last time I was at Disney. He was exactly how he is on camera, but I will give him credit he was very friendly and down to chat with a stranger so we just gossiped about his arch rivals, Disney Food Blog. Apparently they are extremely fake and dont even eat the food they review, just take a picture with the cupcake and throw it right in the trash, and he has videos to prove it. It was such a highlight of the trip. 😂😂😂

L

You should’ve told Tommy Boy that it’s not the job of the cameraperson filming the cupcake to write the review so there’d be no reason for them to eat it. They weren’t prudes, they just weren’t made aware of them at all cause YouTube (and wider fandoms for either) didn’t exist yet. Like, how does an attraction have a history where two of my favorite comedic actors (Tim Curry and Phil Hartman) play two different versions of the same role, and I never even get to see it? Such a bummer!

ExtraTERRORestrial was one of the most fun surprises when I went in 2001. But I can see it being too intense for what the average Magic Kingdom visitor would expect to find in that park. I think if they would have put it in MGM instead, and themed it to the Aliens franchise, it might still be here today.

I hope the movie is Ratz!, and if not I think you would really enjoy Ratz!

I LOVED and continue to love Lilo and Stitch. I have been to Disney World twice in life, both times as a young child. I remember 2 things: 1. Haunted Mansion is an Excellent ride. 2. The burp Stitch does in that ride where they pump a smell into the seat right in your face was so disgusting, so foul, my entire family felt genuinely ill and I couldn't watch the film for over a year. 6/10 experience.

They're taking out the animatronic dinos at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle in a month 😔 They're 40 years old, but that's part of their charm!

Are they looking for a buyer

S
Silky · July 31, 2025

I can't believe Jenny came up with the perfect foolproof way Disney could have fixed Musk. Or not like, fixed, but occupied him, similarly to how when I was a kid my parents would give me a new toy when we had to take a long car ride. I wonder what the timeline is like where Musk & Kanye bought Evermore together... Anyway, I fully don't mind pivots and delays because I know whatever comes next will be good and fun as usual. And that takes time! And in the mean time we get a video on here every month anyway.

I have a horrific, nearly Lovecraftian-in-its-terror vision of what the M+K Evermore collab might look like and I actually am uncertain if I can even describe it here the best way I can put it is, um, "Live Action Wolfenstein Experience, Sans Satire"

1. Given how much I loved the submarine ride as a kid, going on the Finding Nemo version wounded me. My niece also judged me for having liked that ride once. 2. Big Al should sing Hellfire from Hunchback to recapture the joy of a big bear with a guitar he half knows how to play showing up to sing "There... was... BLOOD ON THE SAND" 3. The only fate I can think of worse for a favourite attraction than "Half-assed screen-based Cliff's Notes edition of a movie" is "Cleared for the line infrastructure for a different ride." The thing about this July is that it felt like it was six days long. If this bad movie review is at all similar to The Church Play Cinematic Universe, I'm all the way in for it.

The Bug’s Life attraction in California Adventure absolutely HORRIFIED me as a kid. When you brought up the 4D effects in Alien Adventure I had to pause the video to rant to my boyfriend about how nightmarish Bug’s Life was to 7 year old me. What imagineer thought that massive bug exterminators should spray Raid on the audience?? I think I was so inconsolable we had to leave the park early. Needless to say, when you brought up that it was defunct, I cheered.

M
Markus D · August 1, 2025

I went to that when I was a kid, but I was so young that I don't really remember my reaction to it beyond "not liking it", but I'm not sure that I freaked out about it, even though I was a sensitive autistic child. I just remember it being unpleasant and boring, not triggering.

Small note: the ride Dinosaur is still open! You have until the end of this year to ride it! :D

FYI - Dinosaur is still open. Until next year. One of my most anticipated rides, when I go in the fall for the first time.

Hey, I was wondering if that furry adjacent video is still in the works? It’s a topic I have a personal investment in since I work at a hotel in Pittsburgh (not the Wyndham 😬) and interacted with a lot of the furries. They were all super kind, and as far as I know, Pittsburgh really loves when they come in. Still excited for the Barbie/bad movie videos!

I appreciate the dry savageness with which you treat the mansplainers and mulvihills (and MUSKS why do all these huckster names start with MU) of the world. Thinking about dumb mansplainy fish fighting their own reflection is going to make me laugh all week.

M
Markus D · July 31, 2025

I think that Atlantis has its good moments, but unfortunately a lot of the characters are more gimmicky than fully-realized. I like the villain though. Totally agree with you that the visuals are really cool regardless of the movie quality!

Saw alien encounter when I was 12 with my dad. We did not expect that experience and I was terrified. You felt air on the back of your neck and water was sprayed for sure though I thought it was supposed to be like it's drool.. Lots of strobing and the seats bucked back and forth as the alien was simulated to move around

Still pissed Disneyland removed Country Bear Jamboree all those years ago. Was a annual passholder in the 90s until 2001, not coincidentally. I am finally making my first trip to WDW soon and I just learned they changed the Country Bear. So, now, I am not sure I even want to go.

Jenny, someday you have to check out Wizard Quest in the Wisconsin Dells! I was so amazed by this place as a child. It's like MagiQuest but SO MUCH MORE! Plus The Dells is such a strange tourist place that I think you'd have fun exploring all aspects of it, not just the waterparks.
