I remember the vibe in the air about Barbie vs. Bratz. I didn't know much at 6 years old, but I knew of the cold war between these powers. I was also just so confused by MyScene as a separate brand and canon at age 6. "Who's River? Who are these girls? I thought Barbie's boyfriend was Ken?" "No, Ken and Barbie broke up." "What's 'broke up'?" My friend had tons of dolls, including Bratz and their weird detachable feet, and they were the lore expert at the senior age of 8.

I rewatched this and when we got to the social anxiety princess I'd completely forgotten how ugly the fairy tale land is and how stupid and unappealing the story is. Jenny starts introducing the movie and I go through the exact same journey she describes, and the exact same journey I already went through the first time I watched this preview: "Oh this seems cool! The protagonist looks cute and has a personality and a real problem to overcome! Secret fairy tale lands are a no brainer, they're always cool, this movie must be awesome! Oh... oh no..." Baffling how they messed this up. The fairy tale land looks awful, I hate looking at the villain, and what fixes Barbie's social anxiety is just... discovering that she has magic? A story like this should be so easy and yet they just dropped the ball completely. Maybe it's unfair of me to judge the movie so harshly without even having seen it myself, problem is I'm never GOING to watch a movie that looks like that.

This is my no-stakes Barbie conspiracy theory: YA author Shannon Hale wrote a book called Princess Academy (which ruled my life in 2007), and she said in a blog post that Mattel approached her about a Barbie adaptation, which she turned down (the book is VERY not Barbie). I feel like Barbie Princess Charm School was the serial numbers filed-off adaptation - in fact, it's probably what they would have made even if they'd gotten the book rights haha

I was just watching an anime that includes a school that only nobles, who are the only people in the kingdom who have mana and can use magic, can go to. But the main noble character enrolls her commoner servant pretty much just so he could do lackey stuff for her at school. So yep, it's not a YA novel, but that extreme class dynamic in a school exists lol. And tbh, there are a lot of anime that include the 'poor but smart girl in a school full of ultra-rich studly dudes who unofficially make her their servant' thing. Hana Yori Dango and Ouran Host Club are two classics.

Sorry if you cover this in a different part of the video, but the MyScene movies actual tie into their animated web series! Like Madison’s dream is an early episode. All the crushes and drama are outlined in it too. Doesn’t really fit with the topic of your video, but it is a pretty cool time capsule. Also, to my knowledge, MyScene was the first doll line to do this, which is crazy cause now every doll line does animated shorts

I'm just reeling over the choreography thing...dance is a creative endeavour where going off-script is frowned upon for good reason, especially when it has huge stage-filling movements like ballet. I'd be a little more sympathetic if it was a true solo performance but there were other dancers on stage, your director was 100% in the right Barbie Also, "school with nobles where wealthy commoners can attend but never rise to nobility themselves" is just Fire Emblem Three Houses

Oh the miramax Weinstein jumpscare happens a lot from that era. Rewatched spy kids 2 and I was like why is there so much uncomfortable foot stuff with the young girls in this great kids movie cut to credits Executive Producer Harvey Weinstein. Ohhh.

I spent so much time on the Barbie website in the 2000's, and I always liked the princess side of things more, but my mind snapped into focus as soon as I saw the MyScene animation. And then I took a series of psychic blows at that clip with the movie producer. Also, no wonder my idea of dating was so confused as a kid, if all the romantic media I was watching was like "let's drag out this relationship tension for 4 more seasons by having them assert that they're super definitely not into each other, and agree verbally that they're not, and date other people but throw jealous hissy fits at each other about it." Screw "you can't marry a man you just met," I already knew that as a kid, where was my child-friendly road map to dating?

Does the audio sound a little uneven to anyone else? It feels like the first half's voiceover/talking segments are louder or more crisp than the ones in the second half. Not sure if its just my device though

In China Barbie isn't that big but they have a doll brand called Yeloli that fills that niche, and if you like angst in girls media I think it would be worth a look! (The first five seasons are dubbed into English on Youtube.) The basic premise is that a group of fairies were cursed to become lifeless dolls, but if a child truly loves their doll, it will come to life and grant a magical glowup, Sailor Moon style Also this squad of kids has to constantly fight the evil fairy queen who is trying to invade the human world.

This is SO GOOD! Also: I know that the trope of "outsider at the fancy boarding school" is well-traveled, but I want an examination of parallels between Barbie's Princess School and Tyra Banks's Modelland specifically.

I feel like this is a multi year edging session waiting for Princess and the Pauper.

Wow I had completely memory-holed the my scene dolls. Suffice it to say, preteen me (Bratz hater) was not impressed when they came out.

Re- Barbies vs Bratz: I had tons of Barbies but I was NOT allowed to play with Bratz dolls as a kid ever! Not even when I had playdates with friends at their houses. My parents also took away some of the clothes that my Barbies came packaged in & replaced them with homemade or vintage thrift store Barbie clothes because certain pieces of Barbie clothing "weren't modest enough." They also hated the amount of makeup on modern Barbies because they were worried it would corrupt me somehow, but the blue eyeshadow on vintage Barbie dolls was fine lol. Also I was never allowed to watch the Barbie movies, or most movies. I'm sure glad to be an adult.
