Ramble: The Horrors of Low Budget 80s/90s Fantasy for Kids

Youtube mirror: link

NOTE: I've had to remove about 6 minutes from the youtube mirror to unblock the video from a copyright claim. I do strongly urge patrons to resolve any technical issues they may have with the built-in patreon player.

The youtube mirrors mostly became routine because in early iterations of the patreon player they didn't have auto-captioning, which was important for accessibility. That and other features have since been added to patreon, and there are a lot of reasons it's impractical and sometimes even impossible to cross-post this content to youtube. I feel like it's been years of trying to find new loopholes to imperfectly resolve UI problems, only to have new problems appear. Copyright blocks, issues keeping private content private, youtube filling unmonetized videos with their own unskippable ads.

If there truly is just a strong preference for the youtube player over patreon, while it won't fix all problems, I can make an effort not to make content that integrates copyrighted clips anymore. Early rambles used to always be talking-only, but there's been kind of an effort creep over the years. (It's a decision that's generally made when I'm recording because I don't bother describing when I know I can show!) But I could re-structure my approach to eliminate clips again.

22:23 I was very thrown by the beginning of Rumpelstiltskin bc it looks so Australian lol, I've never seen so many gum trees in a fairytale (I realise there are introduced eucalyptus trees elsewhere lol, I looked it up and I think the movie was actually filmed in Israel, but in my head European trees=fairytale and gum trees=my Australian primary school, so it's just jarring!)

With Labyrinth, in the end she did not give up her whimsical ways, a big point was that she will still need them at any given point. However, she did learn to balance it with the real world, since she allowed her baby brother to use one of her toys. I saw it recently for the first time and just thought "Yes. Whoever made this understands what it is like to be a girl that is into fantasy and spends a lot of time daydreaming."

I read a lot of folk/fairy tales and you can rest assured that the "my spouse told me not to do a thing, but i did it anyway and now i've lost them" is a gender neutral archetype. One of the more well-known (i think) stories is the one where the wife tells her husband not to take off the ribbon around her neck, and when he does, her head falls off. I like Alice in Wonderland, but it's more of a social/political commentary than it is a children's book. Or at least it's equally both. The reason all the characters are so mean to her is because they're all self-important, condescending adults lol. I feel like adaptations focus a lot on getting as much Wonderland in the movie as possible, but they would really benefit from a Wizard of Oz (movie) type of framing device where the characters in Wonderland are direct parallels to people that Alice encounters in real life. There are so many adaptations that i'm sure at least one of them does this, but the majority are focused on aesthetics and the isekai of it all I very much like that none of the objects in my house are sentient, but if i had to pick, i'd pick the living room stereo, though i'm worried it wouldn't like my music taste. If i had a kettle or a tea pot, i think either of those would be an ideal sentient housemate

I love the weird and unsettling fantasies, but I am also 42 and I think a lot of the childhood movies in my most formative years had that unsettling feel in some way. The last unicorn, Return to oz, The Neverending story, labyrinth. Maybe its just what I ended being exposed to, but I enjoy those type of movies more then something like the original wizard of oz.

a

expanding on the framework jenny laid with the beauty and the beast theory, i propose the labyrinth theory thusly: if the horrifying dangerous fantasy world has a sexy or silly antagonist, the story becomes tolerable

FWIW I had the same reaction as the people in that Reddit thread when I looked it up and saw Magic in the Mirror was a Full Moon movie directed by Ted Nicolaou, both well known names in the world of low budget 90s genre schlock. It would be the equivalent of hearing about some wildly ambitious entertainment space concept that only delivered 5% of what was promised before slowly going bankrupt and then learning it was created by Ken Bretschneider. Like…well, yeah, that tracks.

I do think that Labyrinth's ending could be interpreted more positively? Once Sarah is alone in her room, putting some items which remind her of her adventure in a drawer, all her friends from her adventure show up in the mirror to speak to her, telling her that if she ever needs them, they'll always be there for her. And she says she does need them - right now, in fact. Every now and again, she still needs them, and always will. And then they all show up and have a dance party in her room! The point being that while Sarah needed to mature, that doesn't mean she's stopped needing the comfort of childhood; both can co-exist. Her room is actually still full of cute toys (I checked), and I think she's mainly putting away a few things like the Goblin King book and some photos of her mother. Given that missing her mother contributed to her resenting her stepmother, even though she's a perfectly nice woman who's making an effort with Sarah, was an issue for her, this represents her letting go of the past and being ready for a new start. I think it's a really lovely coming of age story for a teenage protagonist, learning to balance the nostalgia for childhood with coming adulthood, and that's not to mention all the sexual awakening metaphors! With Jareth serving as a sort of sexual fantasy: an older man a girl finds attractive and a bit frightening, but in a completely safe environment where all she has to do is say the magic words (you have no power over me), and then it will all end. ...Oh dear, now I am thinking that it's a bit like a G-rated version of a sexual fantasy with a safe word! My mind always takes these odd turns.

My animated puppet would be my dishrag. I hate doing dishes, but he would love it, so he'd be a perfect foil for me. And anytime I was losing an argument with him, I could just plunge him into the dishwater and whatever he was saying would get cut off with a goofy burbling noise. Overall, our relationship would be a little chillier than the cordial relations of the sheepdog and wolf in Warner Bros. And I could secretly bring him along in my pocket if I was going on a date but didn't know how to act.

H
Ham · August 22, 2025

So here's the thing that burns my buns about Wizard of Oz adaptations, and that is how every modern version treats the 1939 musical as the original text. I know I'm in the minority in having been brought up on the books, but OZ IS A REAL PLACE IN THE BOOKS and there's none of that analog-character and-you-were-there-too it-was-all-a-dream business. That's what makes the whole electro-shock prologue in Return so disappointing, because so much of the rest of that film is a loving and accurate translation of the later books.

H

P.S. The 1939 film isn't even the first Oz movie. Some of the first films EVER were Oz movies.

dustjackett · August 20, 2025

I've just reread the Wizard of Oz and the point you mentioned about goofy sidekicks is spot on. In the book it's even clearer that they're are all like...adults? Goofy adults for sure but it's a bit of a relief when they show up and 10-year-old Dorothy is no longer just wandering around on her own. It's made a point that the Scarecrow and Tinman don't sleep/eat and spend a good portion of the book keeping watch and gathering food for the hapless child they've acquired.

I actually would have LOVED it around the time it came out. (I was about 4?) It’s a shame I didn’t know about it at the time. I was also obsessed with the Dinosaurs sitcom. I always had a VHS tape from the series checked out from my local Blockbuster. The part with the well maintained grass in the Duck section reminded me of when we filmed a movie for uni. It was a post apocalyptic stoy so in early spring we scouted this awesome shut down industy plant/steel manufactury in germany that was converted to a public park. It was rusty and dusty and brown. But when we came back to film in summer everything was green and blooming because of course the city was maintaining the public park so we filmed our dead planet sory im front of all the lush hedges and bushes 😭

If any object in my life were replaced with a puppet version of itself, I think it might have to be my 3D printer. It's got such a personality already, failing in spectacularly messy ways (just Google 3d printer spaghetti) and making wonderous and fantastical creations in equal measure. Plus, it sets me up for living in a bob the builder esque universe, where anything can be solved through a combination of DIY crafts and teamwork - basically my version of heaven.

Holy crap, Jenny was not kidding about Magic in the Mirror. I loved her breakdown of the movie here, I probably listen to this video every day since she posted it, and I just had to see just how bad Magic in the Mirror was. It's very boring and drab, the ducks are absolutely hideous and the whole tea is so damn disturbing. I don't find Tansy as annoying, I mean he is annoying, but I actually find his boss insufferable with his terrible accent. I haven't finished the movie yet, but I understand why she wouldn't want to watch the sequel. I would've given up in the first ten minutes, I'm about an hour in, I'm only following through because I love her summary of this movie. W
William Palmer · May 10, 2025

I'm sure it's been said here already, but Rumplestiltskin is Billy Barty, a fine actor who you may know from Willow, among many other things. He certainly deserves a lot more recognition than Dinklage for all the social work he did; Dink seems to want a monopoly on little person acting roles, as you point out by calling him the "only" little person currently working, while Barty promoted opportunities for everyone.

being weirdly scared of specific things when you're a little kid is so real. I must've been about 4, and the night we had gone to a train convention, I had a nightmare that I got arrested by a riot squad of cops for trying to get into said train convention after hours. Naturally, I was then scared of trains for the next year or 2. Not cops. Trains.

A
Amélie Roubert · May 8, 2025

I'm personally fine with sticking to Patreon when it comes to the rambles! When I saw the ramble theme, my first thought was Troll and (mostly) Troll 2, but I guess it's moreso horror than "kid fantasy movie". Also for the inanimate object as a puppet question... I think I'd say the lamp in my kitchen? It would probably feel nice and fun to being watched by a puppet while I cook and do the dishes I think.

M
Maggie · May 8, 2025

I just click on the mirror ‘cause I’m used to YouTube. I like the clips, so if here’s where the videos are here’s where I’ll watch them. If one inanimate object in my daily life was replaced with a puppet with a face… Maybe my electric kettle? It could boil water for me in the morning so it’s ready when I come down, and then we could chat over coffee or tea in the mornings and evenings!

M
Meeeee · May 8, 2025

I'd personally prefer fewer clips- I don't mind the native patreon player but I think the video is more entertaining when you verbally translate the unique absurdity/charm/horror of the subject. Especially when it's niche and the audience might not be familiar, it helps the storytelling when you walk through the media from your own POV.

G
Godhand Goodwork · May 8, 2025

i see this point but i still like the clips, it breaks it up for me and helps make up for what i can't visualize from memory. Having thought about it more i feel like in terms of quality, unigness and security from copy right issues: less clips is the better choice, probably.

She is pink and white stripped with tiny little green flowers and white lace edges. My grandma made her for me when I was born and I used to gather up one of her corners to make her talk, so she would look kind of snake shaped, or like she had a little snout! She's a bit tattered from sleeping with me every single night literally until I moved out of my parents house, so she lives nice and folded up in my closet now, but she's my bestie and I'd love for her to follow me around like a little magic carpet. She's 28 years old! Omg

The reason why Return to Oz is so much darker and the characterization is so different from the original movie, is because it's almost painfully faithful to the book. The original Wizard of Oz movie is a pretty loose adaptation, it took a lot of creative liberties to make it palatable to the general public The Oz books are just deeply disturbing through and through. I was obsessed with them as a child, and Return to Oz is my alltime favorite movie from my childhood, so I feel like I need to defend it. It's good I swear!!

I had scrubbed Magic in the Mirror from my brain. You've unlocked so many memories! As a kid, I loved anything slightly dark, weird or obscure. Bonus points if it was weirdly creepy. The duck people drinking people tea was just disturbing enough to lock me in. It was up there with Labyrinth for me. Plus, mirror minder?? Are you kidding me? What a title! It's just fun to say lol! I also think Tansey loosely reminded me of a way less hot version of James McAvoy's Mr. Tumnus from Narnia who I definitely had a crush on as a kid. The part where the puppets' costumes are hanging on the wall made me think of an old live-action Moomin tv-show I watched as a kid. It was people in costumes, but there was some idea that you couldn't trick children into thinking things like that existed that made the tv channel demand they show that it's humans inside and the result was an episode where Moomin and his family visit the king and aren't allowed to wear their heads - so they TAKE THEIR HEADS OFF AND HANG THEM ON HOOKS ON THE WALL. Messed me up pretty good.

In case Jenny or anyone else reads this, if you’re having trouble finding a rare or old movie on streaming, I recommend checking out Scarecrow Video. They’re located in Washington state and have the largest physical collection of movies in the country, which they’ve recently started to rent out by mail the way Netflix used to. The shipping costs can be a little high depending on where you live, but the flat price to rent is less than five bucks. If you’re really into film or want to watch something obscure and don’t mind paying a little bit, I highly recommend them!

I love having the rambles mirrored on YT for a bunch of reasons — first, because I watch your content a lot and it’s great to have them in my history so I can go back and watch again. Also … Screen mirroring for me is very jerky — tried to cast last month’s ramble but it was impossible to listen to. So I watched it on my phone but got a headache 😅 that always happens when I watch something too long on a phone screen 🤷🏻‍♂️ All that said, I support not because I’m “buying rambles” but because I love the content and want to support. I’d support even if there were no rambles. So I love the YT mirror but if it’s not there, it’s not there. 🕺🏻

not sure if you're into marionettes or if they count as puppets, but you should check out german cult puppet content augsburger puppenkiste for some cute/scary stories. We got Don Blech und der Goldene Junker, a story about a wartime generalm who retires, hammers his old armor into a sculpture, and then has to track it down to kill his wartime self, after it becomes sentient after a lighting strike (also there's a seamonster that loves treasures and sweets). We have Urmel aus dem Eis, where a guy lives on an island and teaches animals to speak, but they all have speech impediments and then a dinosaur gets thawed out of the iceberg and a big game hunter wants to hunt it (also there's a giant crab that lives under the island and the underegropund caves have been a weird fascination for me for decades now). And there's Kleiner König Kallewirsch, where two kids get recruited to help an underground fairy king to reclaim his kingdom, and they almost get drowned by a blind ferryman. Fun Stuff. But the puppets where really cool and interesting, and as a kidf i loved the environments

Cannon Films is an interesting topic. From 1979–1987 they were run by Golan and Globus and made a ton of -- usually bad -- low budget movies. Fantasy and action. Often the sort of stuff that would have a much higher budget today. They produced Masters of the Universe and its quasi-followup Cyborg, and Alien From LA. They worked with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Charles Bronson. They produced Treasure of the Four Crowns, and King Solomon's Mines. They produced Lifeforce and Superman IV. They wanted to make Spider-Man and Barbie but came to a crashing halt before that. Rumpelstiltskin would have been the first in a whole line of fairy tales. Golan went on to 21st Century Film Corporation and produced the 1990 Captain America and Night of the Living Dead. All stuff with a similar vibe. When you see Golan and Globus it's probably going to be bad genre-movie stuff, punching above its weight on a low budget.

I'm fine with the Patreon player as a primary thing, but the Youtube mirror is helpful, partly for when I watch a video in multiple sittings so it keeps my spot and is easily accessible, partly because I like to watch with my wife and we don't have a computer set up in our living room so the app support is key. Whatever's necessary is fine though, just giving some considerations for why the mirror is helpful.

Also unrelated but I also hated Alice and wonderland and cat in the hat as a kid and my mother brought it up in my adult autism assessment and the psych said it was quite common in kids with hyperempathy to get overwhelmed by other kids in peril. So basically the cringe was too powerful, it shutdown my baby brain.

Was the Reddit thread for Magic in the Mirror referring to Charles/Charlie Band? He runs Full Moon Entertainment, and Moonbeam Entertainment was an offshoot focusing on kids' movies. Charles Band had a heyday in the 80s and has since committed to making stuff like Evil Bong and The Gingerdead Man.

SweetAlissum · May 2, 2025

I totally understand why, as a kid, people wouldn’t like Alice in Wonderland. It is scary when no one is there to help you and they seem so harried. It does surprise me you hate Alice and like Labyrinth but I love both so I also fully support any love for both of them. Alice is my personal favorite book, so obviously I had a different reaction to media inspired by it, but I really do get it. I related to something in Alice you said earlier about fairytales - that as a girl, you will be given so many arbitrary rules you’re doing your best to follow. I liked that Alice tries her best with them but does show outward frustration and that’s valid as the reader/viewer. I still feel like her sometimes, even as a middle aged adult. Maybe it’s just how having a corporate, white collar job feels, but there’s a lot of pleasing mad kings and queens where you need to smile and abide by silly rules… This is one of my favorite ramble topics in a bit! I admit I’m absolutely nostalgic for this 80s style of fantasy films and a lot of it is all the puppets. Your rant about the horribly ugly human face characters is also dead on and was everywhere in the 90s. I’m curious because of the Labyrinth mention if you’ve ever gone to Labyrinth Ball? I’d wanted to go for 10+ years before I finally did and it was such a fun experience so now I’m a regular. A lot of the issues you had with Evermore’s “gameplay” I think Labyrinth Ball does so much better. It’s obviously a very small scale thing since it’s a once a year event instead of a theme park, but they handle the LARP element so much better. They have a vague lore you can pick up on entirely by just talking to actors throughout the nights. Your quests are fun and easy. I’ve been sent to play a dice game with pirates, answer a riddle from a rogue, and dance with a foreign noble in one of their ballrooms, talk to fairies. It’s all simple but everyone is excited to participate ie actors aren’t confused you’re talking to them (the Evermore bar is so low, but I promise this event is good). It’s a lot of fun!

I prefer the patreon player. It isnt any more buggy than the Youtube app, or at least mine seems to be in a perpetual state of confusion. Youtube got me so mad... I had stopped watching as many youtube videos when they very first started going crazy with ads back in the day, but now sad Canadian that I am I've cancelled American services like Netflix so I'm back in ad city. Sigh. At least it's spring and I am out planting some hardy apple trees- they're too young to have faces yet, but maybe one day. Edit: I have adblockers normally, when I am cooking or cleaning it's just far more convinient to use the app on my phone. And the patreon player works much better for me.

Jenny, you should be able to find good laserdisc rips of the Tales From Muppetland specials on Archive. The Frog Prince, Hey Cinderella, and The Muppet Musicians of Bremen. I've posted some myself in the past (ocpmovie/tygerbug). Youtube versions might also not be terrible. "Hey Cinderella (1969)" is a sequel/remake to a Snow White 1965 pilot that is not publicly circulating, and was co-written by Joss Whedon's dad. The Frog Prince 1971 is a sequel of sorts to "Tales of the Tinkerdee" from 1962 which you might also want to look up. (Muppet head writer Jerry Juhl played Taminella Grinderfall in both, and it's his most significant role as a performer.) "Frog Prince" is often considered the first appearance of Kermit as a frog, but closer examination suggests that Kermit was considered a frog in the 1950s. Rufus the dog also appears here and in pilots like "The Muppet Valentine Show" with Mia Farrow, and "Land of Tinkerdee." I might also recommend stuff like "Tale of the Bunny Picnic" (1986), "The Great Santa Claus Switch" (1970) and of course "The Storyteller" (1988)

S

Also I really hope you’re able to talk about the muppet frog prince, I watched that as a kid and recently (read: during the pandemic) I rewatched it, wow very different from how I remembered lol. The evil queen is so awkward and lumpy bc of the people controlling her, the acting and songs are questionable but charming, and yeah definitely a shoestring budget.

Alice in Wonderland scared me too! I think you’re totally spot on with the side kicks making a big difference. In Alice in Wonderland I feel like they really hit an uncanny nightmare feeling, especially when she can’t leave. I think it really played to the fear of getting lost without your parents or guardians around to help you. Plus, kind of like you mentioned, pretty much every creature she runs into gives off hostile energy. So you’ve got this scared child who is alone and surrounded by antagonistic creatures and can’t get home, and suddenly it’s not so whimsical

I prefer the Patreon version since the embedded YouTube player in Patreon on Android is super annoying and the actual YouTube app plays ads. To watch on my TV I just plug my laptop in anyway. One cheap '90s child movie that always got under my skin was Ernest Scared Stupid, of all things. Beyond the troll(s) having alarmingly gross and detailed costumes (designed by the Chiodo brothers, same guys behind Killer Klowns from Outer Space), as a kid I always found Ernest's cartoon-in-real-life persona to be oddly disturbing. Maybe Jim Varney looked too much like a full-grown man to fit the role of a de-facto giant kid?

Regarding Jenny not liking "Alice in Wonderland" type stories I think the problem lies in the child protagonist getting scared and upset by the events happening to them, which is what happens in the Disney cartoon. I hope it holds up for a good bad watch, but ya never know. As for a puppet, I have one really nice wingback chair that I feel in a similar way, would be so lovely for the arms of it to just like wrap around and hold me as I sat in it, but only if this is a truly kind and well-intentioned puppet. My pick for 80s/90s fantasy would be The Argon Quest. It's a movie that was cut together from a few episodes of a Canadian TV show called Blizzard Island after the show was cancelled after 12 episodes. It's got Jim Henson style puppets, one of the antagonists is a puppet snake, and the other antagonist is a puppet witch whose sidekick is her uncle's still-living, severed head (to be fair, I think his body was disappeared with magic, he wasn't beheaded with an axe or anything). I loved that movie as a kid.

I wouldn't want you to exclude your fun ideas just because of lame ol' Youtube copyright strikes. I typically listen to these on my phone like podcasts (I appreciate that you often describe things shown on screen btw!) and the builtin Patreon viewer is sufficient for the task, as it can play videos in the background. I would prefer to have a Youtube option available but if it would limit your creativity, please feel free to leave it on just Patreon or find a different mirror (PeerTube? 🤔) The only issues I can think of now are casting to the TV (I rarely need/want to do so) and the option to view offline. I absolutely adore the Willow series and watched it before I had ever watched the movie, so I ended up with a much more positive feeling about the movie when I did get to it. The show knows the stuff to bring back from the movie, but then adds so much unique weirdness to the world in a way that really makes it stand out compared to other fantasy. It also centered the story around a lesbian romance between the snarky princess and her knight best friend, with their first kiss being right there in the first episode which felt so refreshing coming from a Disney that had just given us the 2 second background lesbians in TROS a few years before. It also felt refreshing because most fantasy media like it is very male centric (which is why I personally never connected with Lord of the Rings), so making the core of the series three women felt super gratifying to me. Did it end on a cliffhanger? Yeah kinda. They gave a conclusion to the season storyline, but they did have plans to do two more seasons and it will haunt me to my dying day that it was so heartlessly thrown away and never given a chance to succeed or grow an audience (you know, like the 30+ old cult classic it was based on). It was a beautifully unique show that deserved so much better.

I work in a retail hardware store, specifically the overnight shift, so I would choose a forklift to become a puppet with a face. It would be pretty eerie, especially at night, and would probably scare me quite a few times when I forget what it is. But, the strange dichotomy of being in a pretty mundane and conservative workspace and having the random himsy of a puppet forklift just sounds too funny to me.

Thank you for the ramble, Jenny!! Although I usually watch in YouTube I have no reason for that, so I'm very happy to pivot if it means less work for you. I do definitely appreciate the clips - I think growing up in the UK means our frames of reference are often different (e.g. I hadn't heard of any of these films besides Labyrinth) so it's useful to have the illustrations. But I do also appreciate the effort creep involved in including them! I think I'd want my puppet friend to be something small-ish that I could tuck in a pocket or bag and take with me on adventures. Maybe something like a mini speaker that would complain if I tried to play music they didn't like. And who always got caught up in the film we were watching.

When I was really young, I got taken to Return to Oz when it came out. I remember being scared by the Wheelers, but what really freaked me out was the room full of heads that Mombi (I think that's her name) takes Dorothy through. Terrifying! Tik-Tok always seemed like such a cool, loyal friend. I watched it again about 10 years ago, and I'd almost completely forgotten about the beginning with the sanatorium and electro-shock stuff. I guess I was young enough that I only remembered the fantasy stuff, thankfully! As far as Jenny's question at the end, I have a wooden door in my bedroom. The woodgrain in part of it has always looked like a face to me. So I guess it would be fitting if it came to life and started talking to me. Cool Labyrinth shirt Jenny!

My favorite fairytale/fantasy thing not just from the 80s but probably of all time is Jim Henson's The Storyteller episodes, "stories for brave children". John Hurt as the Storyteller is wonderful and i loved his dog puppet. All the monster puppets are beautifully creepy, the music is SO good and the fairytales feel poignant and timeless. Huge nostalgia for these. Must dig out the DVD...

Cleo Oops · May 1, 2025

My favorite thing about Willow is scene where he bungles a spell against a troll and then kicks it into water and it grows amazingly quickly into the Eborsisk. I think it's such a cool spin on a normal dragon design you'd see in other fantasy. And it's not given any other context, so as far as the viewer knows it is the ONLY ONE OF THIS THING to exist in the world, and it ONLY DOES EXIST because of a accidental magical chain of events. And I think that has such cool and creepy implications for magic in this world. And apparently all of that is totally ruined by the TV show, which I also didn't watch.

I genuinely would not want anything in my house or workspace to be turned into a conscious puppet. Besides being scared if it, I'd just feel so bad for it. What does it do when I'm not in the house? Stare at the wall for hours on end? Doesn't it have dreams or broader goals? If it does, then certainly its existence as a puppet trapped in my house precludes it from pursuing those goals.

S
Sploinklet Lawson · May 1, 2025

Well, maybe a car could work. It can go on rides when you're not using it. But it'll need a job to afford the gas. Can you imagine using Uber and then a sentient puppet car rolls up?

M
Maddie Moreland · May 1, 2025

I’m so excited for the eventual multi-hour Barbie movie video! For inanimate objects replaced by puppets: the disc chair by my closet. I feel like if it was sentient, it’d help hold me accountable (or just roast me) for using it to hold my clothes and work bag instead of an actual chair, and I think the legs have some good potential for wobbling around delightfully. Also, it’s one of my cats’ favorite pieces of furniture to nap on, and I’d love to see what kind of relationship it’d have with them. Rivals? Besties? Something else? It’s a staple in my room but I think there’s good potential there for a puppet character.

S
Stephen · May 1, 2025

This might have already been suggested by other commenters, but a dark-ish fantasy show I liked when I was young was Jim Henson’s The Storyteller. One of the episodes was a version of the Polar Bear King story called Hans My Hedgehog, where the prince was a human-sized hedgehog. There was also an anime version of The Wizard of Oz from the late 80s, a series that I think was an adaptation of several of the books. I loved it when I was about 5 or 6, but parts of it gave me nightmares. There was one part where they got trapped in a field of giant, deadly sunflowers with leering, grinning faces. And the Gnome King’s chamber of ornaments…seeing the characters slowly transform into ornaments was pure body horror. There was something else that terrified me around that same time. It was an obscure, local show that I am pretty sure I watched in school. It was about a girl and her younger brothers who were afraid to go to bed at night because they believed that a tiger stalked through their house when they were asleep. For a long time after seeing it I was afraid of the dark because I thought that a ghostly tiger was hunting me.

I think the fridge and freezer being conjoined twin puppets would be fun. Their faces could be made of magnets, so they could shift around anywhere on the doors or sides of the unit. And although they would bicker with each other, they would be friendly and helpful, always opening the doors to provide the exact right food item or ingredient I need at the time (even if I don't know it yet). But if I open either door while they are both asleep, I will see only a cold, yawning void inside. I would be too scared to step through. It would look endless, and what if someone came by and closed the door behind me? Might I hear their voices for once in total harmony, saying, "Looks like we got another. Just in time, too; our supply of raw material was running low. Put 'em with the rest."

First things first, this outfit and hair combo is so cute! As far as YouTube vs. Patreon, do what you need to do. The first priority for anyone on this platform should be keeping exclusive content exclusive to the people who pay for it. Additionally, like you, the ad thing is also so frustrating - the fact that marking it for kids doesn’t stop the advertising makes me frustrated for reasons beyond my own personal enjoyment. I will say this: it’s very odd to me that Patreon does not have a playlist function, and having to make your own Google Doc to list your own content chronologically/all in one place is weird. As long as Patreon is reliable from a technical standpoint and there isn’t any concern on your end about the platform being the only place these posts live, I’d say go for it. It’s a joy to vote and watch these each month, I love reading the comments and seeing what everyone else is saying, and I’m gonna watch no matter the app. 💖

Speaking of that polar bear one, I actually watched a ton of Central/Eastern European fairy tale movies around Christmas this year. The Czech movie How to Wake a Princess (Jak se budí princezny) and the 1947 Russian Cinderella (Zolushka) might be my favorite in the lot. I really like the couple in How to Wake a Princess, and it has some very fun spins on the Sleeping Beauty formula. In that version, the princess is cursed by her aunt to prick her finger on something sharp, so the kingdom cuts down all the rose bushes, bans scissors and forks, exiles its bees, and checks the fields for hedgehogs. The princess is escorted by guards in camo whenever she goes out, and they prevent her from pricking her finger on thorns by diving in like they're going to take a bullet. There are tons and tons of Czech fairy tale movies (and also other former Eastern Bloc countries) and they all have really nice atmosphere. Zolushka has a really charming picture book feel to it. Zlatovláska (Princess Goldilocks) 1973 is a very tv special kind of movie, but I think Jenny would love the many animal puppets that help out the hero. Bring puppets back! Tri orisky pro Popelku (Three Wishes for Cinderella), Byl jednou jeden král (Once upon a time there was a king), Šíleně smutná princezna (The Incredibly Sad Princess) and Pyšná princezna (The Proud Princess) are other ones that I liked, though I'm not sure Jenny would like those as much. Zlatovlaska, How to Wake a Princess and 1947 Cinderella are probably my best guess for what Jenny would like.

The Cannon Films Rumpelstiltskin movie was part of this whole reel of pre-production trailers that Cannon put out, I think in 1986, that got really popular online recently because all the movie ideas sound super-fake. People usually assume that most of them never got made, but I went through the full list with my sister, and almost all of them are real. If anything in my apartment could be a living puppet character, though, I think I would want it to be my microwave. I just like the idea of it making a little "bleh" noise when I take the food out of its mouth.

The Polar Bear King really does seem to have it all. The nasty sisters from King Lear, an Orpheus and Eurydice "don't look at me" style curse, and a variety of big goofy bear puppets! Personally, I'm glad of the clips, as I would have missed all this otherwise. 👍

Sure thing, I've watched the past few months on the patreon player just 'cause, but if it's going to help you avoid youtube's nonsense, patreon player it is. And, probably my bedside lamp, he's been with me for a real long time, at my back giving me nice soft light. Instead of switching him off I could be like "night night lamp" and he'd say "good night" back and fall asleep, which could be nice. I guess I'm too big for him to hug me, still I could hug him. And I swear I'm not just looking at things in my room, I love lamp. I love lamp.

My reading of the ending of Labyrinth was that Sarah learns that growing up is about gaining maturity and finding courage but not separating yourself from the things you love that are perceived as childish, hence why in the final scene all her Muppet friends come join her in her bedroom for a bedroom dance party. At the beginning of the movie she was a kid who retreated into fantasy because she needed to but her arc was about learning to get over her imaginary boyfriend and that "you have no power over me" (which is my favourite arc of any movie, I definitely needed a how to get over your imaginary boyfriend narrative when I was Sarah's age), but like, growing up is less a matter of appearing adult and rejecting play but understanding responsiblity and how play can itself be an act of empowerment. idk I might just personally connect with it way too much and want to give it the benefit of the doubt but I feel like if the movie really wanted to say that being grown up means no longer doing dramatic readings of fantasy books at the park or goofing around with puppets it just wouldn't have ended with a Muppet filled pajama party. and also then I wouldn't like it as much.

The in YouTube player in the Patreon app doesn't run ads but if you open it in YouTube itself it will stick ads on it. Jenny could get rid of ads by putting a block of text at the bottom of the description with trigger words that cause the video to be marked as 'not advertiser-friendly'. I do that on my second channel "Ontario Traffic Man Clips" and it's 100% effective. Or she could post enough stuff publicly on there to become eligible for monetization, which would enable her to disable ads on her videos (that's what I did on my main channel). My vote for something else to post on The Cooler Jenny is the China Beach cover

The inanimate object id like to come to life puppet style with a face would be my “sound machine”. It’s a little speaker with buttons that play various ambient noises for sleep. I think giving it life would make it the most happy since I interact with it daily and put cute stickers on it. It could also turn on and off if I asked so I didn’t have to get up. I appreciate the availability of a youtube mirror so I can listen while I'm out shopping or something, but at the same time it's aggravating to have to cut out parts because of copyright and dumb YT rules. I think making Patreon the primary/full video with all clips and such, and then having the YT mirror (edited as necessary) just available as an option is a good compromise. If/when making the YT mirror involves too much cutting, editing or effort, I think it's sensible to ditch it (for individual videos, at least.
