2:08:20 Intercontinental ballistic pokemon (ICBP)
Rewatching this and didn't notice until now at 1:51:29...Does Jenny knows Spanish?
Pokemon Live has always been in the periphery for me, as someone who was always more into the games and anime. So this is an interesting step into one of the more shadowy areas of Pokemon's past. ...Huh. 3/10, not enough Psyduck. But hang on. I'm confused. Giovanni has his own gym with its own badge. Why is he even presenting this *DiAMoNd BaDgE* and not just a special limited edition of his regular Earth Badge? (I kinda like the gag about Jigglypuff's trainer being the only one unlikely to pass out from the song though.)
cracks me up how she just silently shakes her head when brock is like "you LIKE him don't you misty???" girl same my body is rejecting this plotline so hard
it's extremely funny to imagine if you lost your dog and your friends just started gaslighting you like ''i think he left you on purpose because you're a bad friend, did you forget his birthday or something?''
I recently went to the opera, and the production was that particular flavour of.... what I would uncharitably call overly artistic, where a lot of abstract things are happening on stage that are clearly supposed to represent SOMETHING but sometimes you just cannot comprehend what. And in one scene, there were three animal-creatures in the background, each one made up of two dancers who each had one wing or horn. So two dancers would form one creature. The main focus of the scene is one character sitting on stage alone, and his status as a lone outsider IS a theme in this scene. So I haven't been able to stop thinking about how that was just like that scene where all the pokemon have mates and polycules but Mewtwo is alone. I cannot for the life of me come up with a better interpretation of the symbolism and it just amuses me so much to think that this opera production did the same thing as the pokemon stage musical. Maybe that very serious choreographer went into opera.
Doing a rewatch and somehow only just caught the detail that the abandoned theatre where all the abandoned pokemon puppets are is in Ontario, which is where I live, and I discovered its only like an hour away from me and somehow that just made it so much sadder to me! Both for the pokemon and for the beautiful old theatre. Apparently it's being torn down to build condos (ugh), and just found an article from this past September that demolition has started, so I guess it's probably gone by now. Found a recent video of a guy exploring just before it was to be torn down and be gone forever, and there were still a bunch of the abandoned pokemon in there. Also just noticed so many beautiful historic design and decor elements of the theatre. And now I've really bummed myself out thinking about how sad it all is both for the pokemon and the building :(
Ontario has a severe housing crisis and condos are the easiest way to build a lot of housing quickly.
These Pokémon impressions are seriously impressive!!!
I wore that 2BA Master CD out as a kid so I was expecting to cringe revisiting those songs for the first time in 20+ years. But hearing them sung in more normal, non-anime voices, for the most part they might actually be better than I remembered? The ballads especially could easily pass for 80s hits. Just genuinely knocked it out of the park with that album for absolutely no reason.
The slow realization that the theatre is in my hometown was quite an experience lol
RIP Tivoli Theatre
Rewatching this ramble for the tenth time and the rancid energy around all of the news/interview segments hasn't decreased one bit, lol. I get that everyone older than 15 was already sick of the Pokemon craze by this point, but that's no excuse for treating Heidi so dirty every time
The beginning to this video is exactly why I subscribe 🐥 thank you Jenny
I was aware that Jenny grew up in NorCal but I didn't realize that we both were in the same area as children, but I definitely remember seeing the Pokemon Live commercial on TV multiple times. But I did live in the furthermost southern part of the Bay Area, so it might have been a regional thing.
Considering Jenny's reaction to the Mecha Mewtwo I think she'll like dislike the Future Paradox Pokémon from Scarlet & Violet.
Needs more Jesus
Who would be crucified? I feel like Ash, Mewtwo, or Mecha Mewtwo?
https://www.yvettehelinstudio.com/pokemon.html the creator of the pokémon has a page dedicated to them 🥹
(creator of the pokemon props for the show that is)
I think this video should be made for non Patreon supporters. It’s up there in quality with your regular videos!
Oh god. The stupid Brock song Jenny was anti-hyping the entire video turned out to be the only Pokemon song I've ever seen from the show... it's been stuck in my head for a decade... seeing it on stage made it worse
I knew I recognised Giovanni's voice, he voiced pegasus in the Yu-Gi-Oh series what a crazy career.
omg I thought I was going crazy because I was just envisioning Pegasus everytime he spoke lol
The Tivoli Theatre where those Pokemon were abandoned is about to be demolished to make room for a pair of condo towers. Also I worked across the street from it and I didn't realize until just now that it had been a theatre
Update: the building I worked in has also been demolished
Lol your Pokemon voices are the cutest thing. Also I think Pikachu has allergies so that's why he says Bika. Just my head canon.
the director of pokemon live was the dean of my college lmaooo guess he didnt wanna mention that
I did not expect to hear about campaign finance reform in an early 2000’s musical for a Japanese children’s show but I’m not mad
Giovanni sneaking away when the robot exploded so that he wasn't on stage when the pyrotechnics went off and get hurt/burnt was so funny i think we are supposed to think he exploded not watch him sneak across the stage hahahahah Amazing video!
This probably won't mean much to a lot of people, but the way that they pronounce "Giovanni" in Pokémon stuff now drives me crazy. As a kid, I hadn't heard the name said anywhere else, but now that I know it's said more like "jovanni" (I know that's simplifying it, but basically the "I" and "O" sounds are like a combined sound instead of two really distinct ones) and I'm confused as to why the localizers ever decided that "his English name will be Giovanni, but said wrong".
rip the puppets 😔 i hope someone stole and preserved them well. i think its definitely for the best you didnt try to though, i wouldnt mess around with mold either, it sounds like more risk than its ultimately worth unless you know a lot about mold going in and know what precautions to take exactly. i would just be so paranoid.
Now I’m gonna have that Giovanni song stuck in my head until the end of . . . well, you know.
Jenny giggling and singing along throughout this video was so cute and wholesome. Also idk why it took me this long to realize but the second she started making Pokémon noises it hit me that Jenny is another genre of nerd
No, I see what you mean with people being rude to Misty (36:55). The interviewer made eye contact with her as he asked the question/prompt, and then directed the microphone last second to Ash. It's like he remembered Ash is the main character and quickly adjusted, but it came across as rude? Either way, it feels.... kinda sexist. I get this treatment all the time. They don't even know they do it.
I've watched this twice now, and the way they treat her always makes me so sad :(
How sad, I would love to watch the Barbie Fairytopia live production. That would be an excellent 29th birthday activity. Some dreams just can’t be. It really was for adults too. I kinda respect the semi-subtle innuendo sprinkled throughout.
Long time fan of you jenny- my good friend and colleague was the production stage manager for the original radio city and touring show. (funny enough he's in a shot from one of the clips you used) If you're interested in doing a longer form video and want to do any sort of interview, I can probably set you up. the stories he could tell about this fkn show lol
The impressions were the best part
Im still obsessed with all the Pokémon impressions😭😭
I am completely out of touch with pokemon, but I give them props for making all the pokemon and characters actually match the franchise. I say this as someone who was a kid in the 80's, where we'd get the 'mario movie' that had zero interest in source material :P
Jenny I appreciate you doing 3 2+ hour long ramble videos in a row. I’m really impressed by your pokemon impersonations.
What a perfect time to become a Jenny patron ⚡
Oh my god, I had the CD growing up. My favourite trivia is that in the brochure for Love Never Dies, you can see that one of the side characters has a credit for playing Ash.
James saying "But where does he stand on campaign finance reform, social security, and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"?" made me do a spit-take
I just finished this and it demonstrates perfectly the charming duality of Jenny.
I really like the plot point that Giovanni banged Ash’s mom and brings it up while arguing with him, a 10 year old kid.
I’ve listening to the Staryu impression so many times
“This guy looks like if Lawrence Fishburn was white” 💀
I would watch a whole video of Jenny impersonating every pokemon
For a demonstration of what that foam will eventually do, here is Slimer's arm from the 1984 Ghostbuster's film: https://www.ebay.com/itm/304511811531?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=304511811531&targetid=2299003535955&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9007942&poi=&campaignid=21214315381&mkgroupid=161363866036&rlsatarget=pla-2299003535955&abcId=9407526&merchantid=101740319&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwmYCzBhA6EiwAxFwfgPY4BZPFrA8sYb_5LHJHUlKSU67cGFn4HEN0XBvbCpAntoT3P7U7jhoC_6EQAvD_BwE
I can't believe someone is selling that. Like, yeah, it's a prop from a famous movie, but it's basically just garbage now.
I immediately suspected the theater was in Canada, without knowing anything about it specifically- Theres two run down historic theaters near me (one is egypt themed and such a no brainer for city to restore it into a library, but they dont??). I guess run down beautiful old movie theaters is just such a Canada vibe. We have so many hideously ugly new buildings and relatively few ornate old buildings, all falling to ruin since our cities are too cheap to maintain them. Its what unites us across our big empty country, our governance being cheap and short sighted haha
As an anime obsessed 12 year old, I become in love with Andrew Rannells for his portrayal of Dren in the 4Kid's dub of Tokyo Mew Mew. I was gooped and gagged when I first saw him in Girls.
"it seemed like he was eternally-- I guess an incel, you could say," I had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard at this line lmao
Jenny's enthusiasm is so nice to watch!
I’m not a mold or restoration expert, but as someone who recently had to discard a ton of personal items due to mold from water damage in my house, I also would’ve been extremely wary of rescuing any of the puppets. Too much risk of bringing back spores and getting other items contaminated.
guy on reddit claims to have taken most of these from the theater, there's also av photo of all the decayed puppets posed on stage
I was shocked that your pokemon voices were spot on, i had to say something lol
PEGASUS
I went to the My Little Pony live event as a kid I remember it!😭😭
As someone with small children Paw Patrol Live is pretty big and keeps coming around. it has live singing and puppeting.
Oh my God I'm so glad you mentioned krabby's voice, I still imitate it ALL the time because he just friggin says cookie cookie and I love it so much! The best is Kingler who just says cookie cookie but deeper. Love those two! Edit: The Dubai Giovanni had WAY better charisma. He was so much more menacing but also swave. Edit 2: If they had mold there is literally no way to get rid of that mold. I can almost guarantee they're given shape with foam and you can't wash foam. If you washed the fleece it would pill and look horrible. There is just no way to restore those. Well maybe if you just kept the metal skeleton and made patterns from the fleece covering and foam body you could restore it, but then it's kinda just a whole new thing right? Anyway don't feel bad for not stealing them lol
Looks like only a few people commented on this, so let me chime in a bit late: I once found a cool shirt in (seemingly) good condition in an abandoned mall, and I can personally attest that *no* force on Earth can remove that musty smell from old fabric after its been touched by the elements. It breaks my heart to see these lovingly crafted puppets meet their end like this, but even if you did grab one, all it would've done is stink up your home (even after removing the old foam and washing the cover 20 times). But rest assured, everyone here in Ontario was just as obsessed with Pokemon back in the day, so I'm 100% all of the unaccounted puppets are now in millennial garages around Hamilton and Toronto :D Also, I'm still reeling over the ending to Pokemon Live evoking Frankenstein's monster...maybe it's good that I never saw it as a kid, that would've messed me up more than normal '90s media did lol
This was absolutely fantastic, could easily have been a main channel vid. Massive shout-out to the choice for a trainer to throw a pokeball offstage, get some pyro, and Alakazam to waddle out.
It’s a hat. It could have been made of hat. Love ya Jenny.
I nearly died from how good Jenny’s pokemon impressions were. This girl has so much random talent packed in there.
Yeah it gets me every time when she's just talking normally and just casually sings a jingle in perfect pitch or does an uncanny impression, and then continues talking as if nothing happened
The intro killed me
And the outro!
Petition to post this to your main channel in hopes that the Misty actress finds it and comments on it about her experience (like what happened on your video about that hallmark crafts vid, or that horrible game show where everyone was injured)
Now I have “Everything Changes: Dark Reprise” stuck in my head
I saw this when it came to the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT, when I was like 10. All the other spoiled kids in my class went to see this too, dragging their parents. I was surprised that Jenny said it was a commercial flop, because it was sold out when I saw it. I remember the anime used these songs in place of the Pokerap at the end of episdoes. Jenny seems to thing it's a revelation that Misty is crushing on Ash, but this was a fan theory from the Anime since the first season. Jenny also stated Brock was 16, I always thought he was older, but it is confusing why he'd want to hang out with two kids, unless he felt responsible for their safety or something.
revelation? she says "pokemon media does that a lot"; she just doesnt seem to like it.
I've watched this in the background like 4 times since it came out, definitely a top 5 ramble imo. 10/10
my guess for the random pokemon on pokemon merch that make no sense together is the designers picked their 3 favourite. I would totally do that too. then you gotta make sure everyone you like gets a turn for merch of their favs. do one for an investor's son he'll love that
Giovanni is doing an immaculate Maximilien Pegasus impression.
It's literally the voice actor! I had to look it up because it was driving me crazy. The only member of the cast to have actually worked on the Pokemon anime dub.
DO IT BREAK INTO THE THEATRE!
I have a theory: I think that guy was going to say "between Ash and Team Rocket" but they cut him off after Team, so now it sounds like he's saying "between Ash and He"
I think the screen junkies videos are a wonderful example of how ahead of the curve jenny is. my favorite Star wars character is jenny Nicholson! When I'm feeling blue this lady always makes me laugh. I just needed to praise the queen. That is all. Also her X(twitter) has some real gold. The china beach commercial shouldn't be that funny but it is.
I went to the radio city show with my dad and sister, thank you for the amazing nostalgia trip 🤩
Why did I start tearing up when the Pokemon puppets on wheels came out?? Like they knew it would be such an exciting moment for the kids to recognize them and see these awesome puppets for the first time. I was like instantly transported back in time to when that would have been a huge reveal for the audience.
i just had that exciting moment seeing you in the comments omg. i was obsessed with your pkmn videos when i was a kid (to a level i cannot describe). i hope ur doing great
This was a long time coming but it was so much better than I could've dreamed. This is definitely an asterisk-deserving bonus vid
What a great entrance to this video. *applause*
Luis Perez was the head of my Musical Theatre program in college, so I ended up taking several dance classes from him. Wacky dude, but no where in my experience did I ever find out he was involved in this musical lol. Watching him in this video was wild af.
Great video! I enjoyed it, though the sound of you chewing on the grapes was hard to endure. ;;;;
I used this as a first test video streaming from PC to apple tv (gotta watch this on the big screen!) and I must have said out loud "Is she doing a bit or is it broken?" at least three times.
I want a Pokemon sound impressions contest just so that Jenny can bring home the championship
whipping out the pokemon metapod sleeping pod whenever I need to express how long I've been waiting
Jenny Jenny this isn't in the master post yet
Was there a section about upcoming videos or did I miss it?
Jenny left a comment above about this!
And then Ash paid the slightest bit of attention to Misty, thus completing her character arc
Justice for Misty
The giovanni theme is straight up a depeche mode song HAHAHA
I always forget that Jenny's genuinely a great voice actor.
Jenny could we turn on captions please? 🙂🙏
1:59:50 Jenny lives in Canada? The only clue I had to where she's from previously is she once worked at one of the Disney parks, so either Florida or LA? I'm not american so I can't distinguish individual American accents that aren't cowboy, valley girl or new yorker
The abandoned Pokes are in a theatre in Ontario that hasn't been in use for decades
So did they just take Janet Jackson’s choreo from Rhythm Nation?
Children's shows are some of my favorites because they come across like a fever dream.
Best/Worst Theatre puppets would be a cool topic
I was at the Dubai one! It was outdoors in a park. I overheard the actors talking about how hot it was and I remember freaking out seeing that their costumes definitely weren't cotton. They cut out Misty's song and I think Brock's song because...well probably censorship since a lot of romance stuff was a no-no, and I'm glad. But I kinda wish they'd kept the prof oak and Ash's mum stuff. I distinctly remember wanting more Pokémon and stuff on stage. I shook Jessie and James' hands afterwards, they were the best part to me. Also I got the CD, realised there were all these songs I hadn't experienced, made up my own choreography and tortured my parents with it for months.
I feel like between the dragon ue footage and this we have conclusive proof that Jenny never took The Boy, at least without wearing gloves.
I wonder if the masks in the Mexican show were supposed to look better from a distance, since it is a larger stadium?
Woahhh I didn’t realize it in the promo material, but as soon as I heard Giovanni battling in the live show, I was transported. He was the voice actor for Pegasus in Yugioh!
Oh my God of course he is 😭😭😭😭
Oh no, that Pikachu impression was too cute.
That James “don’t ask don’t tell” joke hit me like a sucker punch
omg I was not ready for Jenny's reaction to the Jenny/Joy song. I've known this song for like 15+ years (the cartoon audio version, not this live show version) and i lovvvvvve it. I probably have all the words memorized, I love the whole thing and for some reason I find it really cute and charming. And real. Like, sometimes you're just head over heels for more than one person lol. God i love this song haha... But this version of it is incredibly annoying, I dunno why he's doing this weird voice. He should have just done it like the original
"pokemon ball, what an amateur!" Made me laugh harder than it probably should have
my eyes when James is questioning Giovanni's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy
This was a hoot! I loved the growing irritation over the robot being accepted as a Pokémon. Rifle, I choose you!
you could say...it was a hoothoot
thank you for all your hard work
That Polycule joke was really, really good.
Omg I’m so happy this won! I’m a huge Pokémon nerd but I’ve always shied away from this because I heard it was cringy, but you know what? Most fun things are. Embrace the cringe I say!
Mistis actress ATE. the camera might not have been on, but she was still giving her all, work
I'm so glad I subscribed to this patron this is exactly the kind of content I want
That raw footage of misti was ROUGH. felt that in my soul
At 28:53 I nearly peed myself laughing at the man frozen smiley face and Jenny's comments about it. I honestly had one of my biggest uncontrollable laughter of the year at that part of the video, while being in a crowded train, surrounded with people looking at me weirdly and probably wondering what is so funny about a pokemon video. Thank you for this moment Jenny, you never disappoint
the nearest big city to me had spirited away live but i didn’t get to go. i’ll never get to see pokemon live :/
wait spirited away live sounds amazing wtf
Jenny thank you for making me choke on water while you discuss the pitch of Brock as a character to a studio! Hilarious
So did you get that plush Phanphy?
Asking the most vital question here
Jesse is great, she actually looks the part and she's funny and she is CARRYING this loser!!!! Ok, I have to stop making these comments, this guy is just rubbing me the wrong way.
As some may have mentioned earlier, his experience in the role was a bad time. As a gay man he felt like his role was a gay caricature and was apparently asked to "gay up" his delivery and performance. I think just looking at the way Misty and her actress was treated kinda adds credibility to how not so great some of the uh....decision makers were.
Oh god, watching that guy talk about his cringey experience in Pokemon Live made me feel so annoyed. Like hey look man, you have a career. People love Pokemon and loved the show, what's your problem? It's so embarrassing when people try to act like they're above the stuff they've done, it makes me cringe.
It's okay, I get the impression that at this point in his life he maybe wasn't in the habit of putting a positive spin on bad workplace experiences. We've all been there I think. But it rubs people the wrong way if they have positive associations with the product you helped bring together, even if the process was a horrible time you have no positive associations with. I'm sure he's learned since then to be less candid.
I feel like you're on the verge of tears every time they show something new and you do those little gasps. Or maybe I'm just projecting because I'm on the verge of tears lol. I'm barely even a pokemon fan but nostalgic stuff from this time period makes me so emotional, especially when it's stuff like performances or parades, stuff with lots of puppets and obvious work put into it like this, it really gets me at the height of my emotions
God, everything about this video just summarizes the whole Pokemon franchise, with which I have been obsessed since I was a child, so well. You sit through so much cringey, un-thought-out character and plot stuff, and then you see one of the cool new Pokemon and you're just like "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO."
Team Rocket New Jack Swing absolutely killed me.
Huge props to the choreographer and puppeteers for the Pikachu dance sequence. It goes insanely hard, I genuinely didn't spot they were puppets first time! And thank you to Jenny for such a long ramble, you spoil us again!! I couldn't stop smiling at your Pokémon impressions, they're so good
I started watching this in line for a ferry and suddenly I realize there's a guy wearing a bright yellow Pikachu hoodie. It was fate
I love that there is a timeline with a 'The Last of Us' style apocalypse caused by Jenny smuggling Pokémon-infused mould across international borders.
Jenny always displays a breadth of knowledge about entertainment and how things work. I wouldn't have noticed the placement of the song she mentioned at 1:11:45 to cover for people coming back in after a break. This is the content I'm here for. I worked at Software ETC in 1999 and I remember Pokémon first coming in, and setting up the Pokémon area at the front the store.
This is main channel worthy content
That was my first thought and I was definitely right
Is there a contract all dance choreographers have to sign that only allows them to give interviews with a towel draped over their shoulders?
I actually got to see this for my Birthday when it was showing in Radio City Music Hall, so this brought back a ton of memories! I absolutely do not remember getting any promotional cards with Mecha Mewtwo on it, so they either ran out by the time I saw it or it wasn't a giveaway for the New York show. It's also entirely possible that I did get one and forgot about it though, since from looking at it online, calling it a "card" is pretty generous. I also didn't buy a Pokeball Lightsaber, but I did get this like... Flag? Pennant? It was one of those souvenir doohickeys on a stick that you could wave around like at a sports game, but it had Mewtwo with a teal and purple diamond pattern and "Pokémon Live" on it. I can't find a picture of it online anywhere, but I have the distinct feeling it's sitting in a box in my folks place somewhere.
Jenny— I went to the wayback machine and found out that in the year 2000, Diamondbadge.com redirected to the official Pokemon Live website, radiocity.com/pokemon :)
Fellow Patrons I ask you, please manifest a silly pal with Jenny energy into my life. I moved to a new area and I'm all on my lonesome!
A small point but the quote in about 7.20 in saying "move over disney" being from a Christian Science magazine made me lol
Your mentioning of modern day children’s musicals made me think of the live Bluey show we took our daughter to last year. It wasn’t a musical and the audio was pre-recorded (because the voices are so iconic that you just have to) but they used puppets instead of fursuits and they were absolutely incredible, clearly very talented performers. This was in the same theater that hosts all the traveling Broadway shows. In the year since I’ve also seen ads for Peppa Pig and Blippi live, but have conveniently forgotten about them until they’ve already come through.
i gasped at "don't ask don't tell," "SILENCE!"
Omg every puppet was so perfect, this was a gift thanks Jenny!!!
What’s tragic is that there was a professionally shot multi-cam version of the main American version of Pokémon Live filmed in Chicago, which several of the cast members mentioned, but it just never got released for whatever reason.
Jenny holding still for so long at the beginning lulled me into a false sense of security. I was really thinking she would walk into view with a joke or something; when she suddenly started moving there was a split second of "OH GOD WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!" before my brain caught up and realised it was Jenny in there. Jenny's enthusiasm for the topic really makes this a great ramble!
This is a fantastic ramble, definitely has main channel potential. I need to know everything I possibly can about this musical. Can the My Little Pony stage show get nominated now too? I'm in tech for a show right now and watching the behind the scenes and cast interviews reminded me how fun and silly working in live theater is, like imagine being able to put Pokemon Live on your resume. Imagine getting to say "yeah I was the Goldeen puppeteer."
Omg in 2018 Luis Perez tried to recruit me to go to the musical theater program he was starting at the Manhattan School of Music. Seeing this would have convinced me
No way! I was at CCPA when he left as the head of the MT program to start that program. I genuinely had no idea he was involved in this production, so watching this was an out-of-body experience lmao.
This was an amazing ramble. Probably deserved to have been a public "real" video.
Im sorry.... DONT ASK DONT TELL??? I'm only half way through and losing my mind.
They still do kids media stage shows. There was a live Bluey thing that came to my town last year. I saw a commercial for it and they did a weird puppet thing with the characters instead of person in costume.
I’ve been seeing so many ads for paw patrol live and the costumes are so bizarre, kinda wanna go.
Glued to the screen the whole time I love whenever you talk about pokemon 💓
Jenny your Caterpie Radiohead AMV gave me the first serotonin I’ve felt in months
I was somewhat hoping youd bring up what your own ideal pokemon live would be just so i could justify commenting my idea: Pokemon mystery dungeon live, so the plot is a human is turned into a mon and goes on adventures. All the characters are costumes or complex puppets and there arent any humans after the intro to make it weird. There are so many cool things you could do with that idea and i think kids would prefer to be pikachu and have cool lightning powers than to be ash anyway.
Incredible 💕
If this made a comeback we would definitely audition.
jenny your pokemon impressions are incredible
This video was so good!!
My babysitter would play Ghibli movies when I was little. There was a Pokemon Live commercial that came on before one of the movies. It was such a vague memory of but now I know what it was. All I could remember was large weird pokemon dancing on a stage
hey jenny im a mold expert and you should definitely go steal that horsea it will definitely NOT release a horde of black mold into your house
the mold wrote this
It hits so different when i know that actor is backstage crying
okay andrew rannells may be the bigger broadway actor but dee roscioli is like very well known in the wicked/broadway community !! she played elphaba both on broadway and on the tour
Watching this much later but as soon as I got to that part I had to pause and look through the comments to make sure someone had said this. Was funny to me that she built up Andrew as the famous person right after mentioning Dee because I was like, wait! She is also sort of famous to a particular set of theatre nerds!
such a bonus to get the pokemon impressions
the girl who owns the pikachu car lives in my town and one day i was just driving and i saw it sitting at the local mechanic and it was so surreal lmao
I just looked up the first episode of Pokemon dubbed in Arabic. I can confirm that, like most Arabic children's cartoons, Pokemon is in very formal Modern Standard Arabic. Ash is definitely not speaking in a Brooklyn accent. Closest approximation to English would be if he were speaking in Shakespearean English
not me being in my thirties skipping pikachu’s goodbye because it still makes me cry
obsessed with the review from the christian science monitor at 7:43. why are the people who believe that terminal illnesses are fake going to see pokemon live? was jesus there?
guys i have bad news if you didn't already know this, but if someone tells you they're a christian scientist, they might actually mean they don't really believe that illnesses are real and are instead just the side effects of having low faith in God
haha oh god I also know all the words to What Kind of Pokemon Are You? Great video Jenny
I heard Misty has a different vibe but I didn't realise how different Brock comes off. Show Brock isn't a fuckboi or even really a horndog, he's GirlCrazy in the way that dated trope where a gal's main goal in life is to find a good spouce and start a family and she falls head over heels with every guy she meets. I think that's even the tragic backstory they outlined for him stemming from having to parent all his siblings...
Don't ask don't tell is crazy 😭😭😭😭
"Journey's just begun" is now permanently put into my mind :D
Giovanni’s voice was driving me nuts until I finally just looked it up and saw that actor was indeed the same dude who voiced Pegasus in the early 00’s Yu-Gi-Oh! dub. A man of many talents but only one voice.
the unintentional asmr you did when you started chowing down on those grapes
Having your sole puppet Gen II representation be Hoothoot is an interesting choice.
I never thought I would apply my masters degree in puppet mycology in this comment section, but you could totally have stolen a Zubat or Horsea and completely restored it
The whole thing was perfect but I actually had to pause to catch a breath at the completely inexplicable inclusion of James really intensely name dropping 'don't ask don't tell' which feels A) like bold political territory to even venture into in a 90's children's stage show and B) implies James is like. A gay man gay in Pokémon canon just based on how they have him deliver that line with great personal conviction and interest
You should have trusted your instinct! That blue Pokémon you were having trouble identifying *was* Golduck, horrifyingly, you can even see when the camera pans down that his beak has fallen on the ground in front of him.
i gasped when james casually mentioned "don't ask, don't tell"
Yay, Pokemon Live won! Fun fact about that Lapras statue in the back of the interviews: I thoroughly researched Pokemon Live for a video I produced and Lapras was originally supposed to feature in the shows climax! I believe, if memory serves, it was supposed to blow bubbles but they just couldn’t make it work for the show/tour. Instead, since they already had the complete prop, they just put it in the lobby of Radio City for photo ops!
Whoa I didn't even notice it never appeared in the show!
Cast the villain guy from the church plays as Giovanni
He instantly reminded me of him too! I haven't seen a lot of stage shows so I had to take a moment and make sure that it wasn't just two male deep voiced actors but I thought about scar and they're similar and they both had enough confidence to pull of the roles
Thought I'd never heard of this before until Andrew Rannells popped up, at which point I was VIOLENTLY thrust back to being in high school and watching a clip of him in this show as James and laughing at his costume
I like the simplicity of ‘a win is a win’ as a solution to the poll crisis, like actually yeah if a topic wins by 50 votes it’s still the winning topic and 2nd-place voters aren’t owed a double ramble, sorry!
As the parent of a young kid I can confirm traveling live shows are very much still a thing. Daniel Tiger Live, Peppa Pig Live, Paw Patrol Live, etc. Paw Patrol Live tickets run like $100-$125 a pop, and a pro shot version is on Paramount+
This video had some of Jenny’s funniest moments ever. It’s one of my favorites. Just like last month. Every time I think she can’t get any funnier, she does!
I'm offended on Misty's behalf (the poor mistreated actor AND the character). Misty in the TV show NEVER acted like she wanted to date Ash, she was mostly annoyed by him. It reminds me of how soooo much media from way back when gave girls romance related plotlines bc they didn't think girls would say or think about anything else. The one saving grace is her song is filled with water Pokemon. At least they remembered that about her.
as an avid andrew rannells fan for the better part of a decade, i feel it's important to mention that there's a deeper level to his uncomfortableness with this show. he's mentioned it in interviews throughout his career in a more lighthearted way, but there's a chapter in his memoir "too much is not enough" (i wholeheartedly recommend btw, he's a great writer) dedicated to his experience on this show. of course there's the "issue" of it being a little embarrassing to be in pokemon live! as an actor trying to find work (though i should mention that he's done things for kids before and hasn't seemed too embarrassed of it ie. voice acting for yu-gi-oh, sonic, & the new trolls movie and narrating a goosebumps audiobook), but he was more so insulted to have been cast in this role as a gay man and to have to perform in this over-the-top caricaturish way that james had always been portrayed. he was asked in the auditions to basically gay it up with his voice and mannerisms and says he felt humiliated playing this role everyday. i just want to share this quote from the chapter: "i felt like i was doing a disservice to any gay kid who saw that show and thought that's how we had to behave. like we had to play the fool, be the punchline. the whole thing made me sad." anyway, he says he's still grateful for the job and enjoyed working with all the people on it, but i just thought i should note that it goes deeper than him being embarrassed to be in kids' media or whatever. (:
thanks for this! i was wondering if it was truly as shallow as it seemed by his comment and its interesting to know it wasn't. i kinda feel bad for him even though james is honestly such an iconic gay villain and i can't imagine loving a butch version of him - it hits different in an era where there's exclusively gay villains and camp is synonymous with incompetent evil
It’s such a bummer that the cast didn’t seem to enjoy their time on the show (whether from bad working conditions or personal gripes) bc it seemed to bring a lot of people so much joy! I feel like I hear of this a lot with stuff made for kids like bc it’s less prestigious they can be shitty to the people employed
I had the soundtrack on CD, and now I FINALLY know what it’s from! I never knew!! Thank you for solving this ancient mystery for me
Everybody is commenting on the intro, but can we talk about how Jenny ended the video by crawling away in the Metapod singing the Pokémon Red and Blue battle theme? 10/10 would watch again
Such a fun one! Did she not do an update on main channel videos in the end? Or did I miss it?
It's in the comments here right up at the top! To save you a lot of scrolling she's just been doing a bit of editing on Starcruiser as her horse passed away this month so that affected how much she could get done.
rest assured that black mold grows extremely easily in a very short amount of time in that kind of water damaged environment to the point where even clothes have to be thrown away. those pokemon puppets would not have been salvageable.
that’s what i was thinking too. i’ve mistakenly forgotten a pair of wet/damp jeans in my suitcase after being forced to shove them in a plastic bag last minute before a flight home. within a month-ish they were already growing mold. (definitely learned my lesson: unpack as soon as you get home!) i can’t imagine the puppets with any fabric material would last so many years.
imagining Alakazam fighting a tank was the hardest I've laughed in a while. This video is a new all-time favorite, the joy is infectious and the pokemon musical is a strange and fascinating piece of pop culture I had no idea about
I thought I recognized Giovanni’s voice. He’s Pegasus from Yu-Gi-Oh!
Also I found archived versions of diamondbadge.com on the internet archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20001110041900/http://www.radiocity.com/pokemon/index.htm
learning that the abandoned pokemon theatre is something i walk by on my daily commute is INSANE
I actually fell in love with Jenny when she started doing pokemon impressions.
"C'mawn Pikatchu, let's get the diamond bahdge!" Deee-lightful!
I misheard “mecha mew2” as “mega mewtwo” and gasped out loud at the idea that this show had foreshadowed the existence of mega mewtwo over 10 years beforehand. Also 10/10 opening
Just sitting here with my 2000-era plush Marill and (pretty much lifesize) Pichu that I got from the random Japanese supermarket in my bit of London as a child and excavated during lockdown, having recently got new Pokemon plush for Christmas, and with Jenny's comment above about just finding all her old Pokemon stuff...is this the Pokessaince? Meanwhile the 2BA Master CD has never actually been off my desk since 2000. Partly because my room at home got frozen in time in 2006 when I went to university, but I like to think part of my brain knew I'd need it again someday.
Was honestly expecting Jenny at the end to cut to her garage surrounded by pokemon husks
With a suspiciously Buzzy-shaped lump in the back covered by a canvas tarp.
After seeing the raw footage of that Misty interview, I can't stop imagining her answering to Jenny's email, taking a deep breath while thinking to herself "I hated every moment of that show"...... "Hi Jenny, Working on that show was awesome[...]"
A+ on the opening gag. Brilliant, no notes!
this one really kept getting me i've disturbed my neighbors with my laughter
Professor Oak hittin' that yoinky sploinky at 59:25 absolutely killed me
So many Geniune Jenny Moments in this video, loved it! Not sure if anyone commented this already, but the pre-recorded voices in the Mexican show are from the cast of the Anime dub.
That guy ABSOLUTELY looked like a white Laurence Fishburne
At the beginning of the show I want it to be like "the Circle of Life" in the Lion King on Broadway! the puppets are so cool! Just needs to be mroe epic with the lighting and choreography.
Conversely, what if Lion King Broadway had all the same budget/puppets/costumes but was choreographed like this show so the cast skips in place while all the elephants and gazelles are just kind of wheeled around in a small circle
“we’ve got ash! 🥳 …and we’ve got misty 😒”
this is one of the greats, a future classic
The first ad is for my town. Oh my gosh, the fomo!
That sweater is amazing I am very jealous
adam driver as the director and choreographer of pokémon live who takes his job really really seriously has me in legitimate tears
that’ll finally be his oscar winning role
The idea of just bringing a robot into a pokemon battle.... Like imagine fighting someone with a Caterpie and then you take out a fucking gun and say it's okay because it's a pokemon
that ending was…magical
I guess you could say that.... Friendship is magic!!! ohohohohohoho
The only way that intro could be better would be if you had paused the footage similar to the director's interview lol.
“It’s a hat. It could have been made of hat.”
11/10 intro. Absolutely incredible lmao
polycule is literally what i named my porygon
I appreciate Jenny’s refusal to believe the extremely dilapidated and deformed Golduck is Golduck
Its beak was right at its feet!
Jenny I just want you to know that I use your longer ramble videos to time when I mix different batches of Apoxie Sculpt and keep track of how long they've been curing for. I'm too lazy to get up and set timers, and my clay takes 6-12 hours to solidify. So I'll just put on a few of your videos and then start sculpting, and lose track of time, and then my only way of knowing how long I've been working or how long my clay has been curing is to check how many Patreon videos I've watched LOL. I'm always like, "hmmmm, I've been probably been sculpting for about 2 hours today!" and then I check my Mental Jenny Timer and it's been like 8 or 9 hours. i just think that's funny and wanted to share lol. i've been sculpting a large dinosaur skull. it looks pretty rad.
crying a little at the ash actor trying to say “culminates,” faltering, and then pivoting to “comes together”
I like that Giovanni's actor is doing the full Pegasus-from-Yugioh voice, like we as a society have decided that when you're a business magnate who fights children you have to sound a lil fruity
I like to imagine that’s just Darren Dunsten’s normal speaking voice.
Seeing the “empty” room was kind of spooky. I don’t know where I was expecting her to come from but I thought the pokemon(I don’t know the name)she came out of was a big stuffed animal, so I gasped in shock at the reveal.
at 1:02:25 when he says "I want both of you to bare witness" for a second i thought he was going to stop at just "I want both of you ;)" and i was like this is not the turn i expected.
I worried the same thing LOL
Is Darren Dunsten the only actor in the cast who was also an actor in 4Kids properties? Giovanni’s voice kept sticking out to me until I realized he portrayed Maximilian Pegasus.
Oh, Maddie Blaustein is portraying Meowth’s voice too
I don’t know much of anything about Pokémon but I thoroughly enjoyed the voice impressions those were amazing
I audibly screamed when that news anchor threw the pokeball directly into puppet pikachu’s head
find someone who looks at you the same way Jenny looks at the Butterfree puppet
I like the morning news guy who obviously had a 1 minute explanation of what Pokemon is
"There's no way a 13 year old would want to date a 10 year old acting like a kid..." Uhhh has Jenny seen AtLA?
I mean I would argue it was weird in ATLA too
it's weird to me that they left the pokemon in that theatre. surely they'd have cleared them all out to make room for the next production? i feel like it must have closed/become inaccessible pretty soon after the run ended if they didn't even bother to pack up
Seeing that jenny has a new ramble makes me do the tiny face and then big face
HAISBSJSJS I KNEW YOU WOULD BE IN THERE!!!! love this, Thanks Jenny!!!! 💕✨
hell yeah
15 minutes in and already two things I feel the need to mention before I forget. 1) Jenny's reaction as a child to that episode of Pokkémon is still my reaction to Futurama's 'Jurassic Bark' as a 36-year-old. 2) On, "if Lawrence Fishburne " was white, I can see it, but it's not close to how much a friend of mine looks like a young, white Ice Cube. It's to the extent where (and this is why I had to share), when another friend, who he'd already known for years, once said, "that guy looks like Ice Cube," he said, without a hint of irony, "who, me?" Granted we were in Amsterdam, so... but it still might be the hardest I've ever laughed in my life. Apart from anything else, he was walking beside and slightly BEHIND the guy who said someone he just saw looked like Ice Cube. Just even he knows he looks so much like Ice Cube that it didn't even occur to him the guy could have been talking about someone else.
The Misty interview gave me so much secondhand anxiety
Oh so the guy who voiced one of the villains in trolls 3 thinks being in pokemon live is embarrassing
Bruh that's such clownery
That news reporter is giving me the same level of second-hand embarrassment as "Pokemon Go to the polls"
Two things: first, I’m surprised there’s no Japanese stage show given that things like Sailor Moon and Ultraman have such prominent stage shows as part of their identity. Second: no, Jenny, you should not have stolen a Pokémon puppet from an abandoned theater: not because of mold, but because that is a creepy pasta waiting to happen 😂
to get into the pokemon league regulations when talking about the badges, they did have a few episodes explaining that the league does inspect/regulate/standardize the pokemon gyms. and that they have the power to shut down gyms if they are being run ineffectively. there are also a lot more badges than the ones collected in the games and by ash in the show (gary got more than a dozen at one point and they do run into some smaller rival gyms like in the scyther vs electibuzz epsiode). if anything misty and brock not taking the diamond badge seriously or questioning ash's motivations just dont make sense when both of them were famously gym leaders lol. also giovanni already had the earth badge so like the diamond badge makes even less sense in the timeline after the pokemon movie bc he was probably ousted from being a leader at that point. they really just reduced misty's personality to pining over ash and being a water trainer (so much for being a 3 dimensional character).
Diamond badge is Giovanni going full sour grapes. "Nooo I'm totally still a gym leader. I'll give out an even COOLER badge than stupid boring old Earth badge. Its.. its DIAMOND. So there"
I’m so mad I grew up during Pokemon gen 3-4. There’s SO MUCH merch now and it seems like there was a good amount during gen 1-2 but when I was a kid you’d find like a singular Pikachu action figure buried somewhere in a Toys R Us. Maybe the apparent financial flop of Pokemon Live ruined the merch for a few years. ALSO I just looked it up and Pokemon Live came to my city about 3 weeks before I was born. Can’t believe I missed out. 😔
Was there an quick update about the status of the main channel videos? I skipped the the end but didn't see one. If it's in the middle somewhere, I'd really appreciate it because I like those :)
There was not an update in this video.
holy shit this is amazing
I love these patreon rambles that feel as substantial as some of her older main channel videos
I hope the metapod cold open gets used in a future main channel video bc its just too funny
58:57 Jenny talking to her Pikachu plush in total childlike earnestness, after making an extremely spot on and adorable impersonation of Pikachu sounds, only to say 'we need to watch the slapstick number, even though it kind of drags', is just such a beautiful combination of earnest, unironic, unashamed, innocent whimsy and wonder with world-weary adult cynicism. I am going to be thinking about that forever. What a delightful moment reviewing an absolutely insane delight of a stage show, so glad this was the month's topic and so glad it was as perfect and weird and wonderful as I had hoped. Ash's mom having a Dark Secret that she used to """hang out""" with the villain and it being played so earnestly but also the wider implications in the hints about Giovanni being his dad is like.... it's really something, it's both funny and kind of shocking lmao but I love it, what a bizarre plot point. (Also, wait, hold on. Pokemon dog tags? That's, uh, kinda dark merch to give to kids lol considering what the actual purpose of these is.) Also, okay, I'm just going to keep rewatching this and adding things because I have so many thoughts, I'm sorry. But man, that cultured mom wasn't wrong. The show, was, indeed, fabulous.
Decorative dog tags were a pretty common merch thing for a while! I have a couple personalized ones from an obscure superhero show from 2008, and Friendship Is Magic and a few other franchises of the same era did blind-bag ones.
I don’t think that Pokémon Live passes the Bechdel test
I had the same thought!
“… between Ash and HE” is not formal. It’s ungrammatical. This is the object of the preposition “between,” so objective case is the only correct form: “… between Ash and HIM.”
Jenny it's not too late to become a voice actor
'Land Before Time 15' will need a breath of fresh air.
not sure if you checked and edited out the footage for the final cut but just in case diamondbadge.com is on the wayback machine and only one part of the webpage seems to be broken, beautiful 2000s looking website im in genuine shock they did the “oak is dating ashes mom” in the first like 5 minutes this entire thing is crazy edit: DONT ASK DONT TELL????????
Kids come for the Pokemon, but adults will enjoy the jokes by Mark Russell.
Amazing video Jenny! Have you watched Chadtronics video on Pokemon Live? He did some pretty interesting work looking into where the costumes ended up. Also, that looked like a Golduck. You could see his beak lying there at his feet :(
Spoil it for me, did he take them or what
Mold expert here :) It’s a known phenomenon that the power of love can counteract biogrowth in porous foam so you probably could take that horsea and you wouldn’t have any issues
Oh noooooo
I have several drama school friends who did touring kids live shows like these. They definitely didn't stop after Pokemon. I'm pretty sure someone was a PJ mask, idk what larger show that was for. There has been a Clifford the Big Red Dog forever, idk if it's still going. I think there was a Scooby Doo live running around for a while. And I'm pretty sure Sesame Street Live is still going.
There's currently one for Bluey as well.
this video is amazing and im not even into pokemon this is just a great story
in hindsight, the concept of a pokemon musical with a serious story probably would've fit a lot better with some of the future more plot-based pokemon games 😭the whole 'abusive mom that leads some futuristic corporation' plot might have actually been pretty cool to be expanded on for a musical - for people who don't know, the main villain of pokemon sun/moon (generation VII) was lusamine, an abusive mother who kind of disowns her kids right in front of both her kids and the player 💀that'd inspire one hell of a song, that's for sure obviously pokemon hasn't been as much of a cultural frenzy as it was in 2000 for decades (i was a really young kid at the time, and MAN do i remember talking about pokemon with my classmates, i was so obsessed with it. ok i kind of still am.), and they didn't start doing more 'serious' plots until generation V in 2010, so that wouldn't happen. it's an interesting thought experiment, though. then again, it might be hard to reconcile that kind of heavy topic when there's a bunch of huge pokemon plush costumes running around lol
Oh my god those Pokemon impersonations were AMAZING!!
Jenny, the costume changes? Excellent editing? The planning? This Ramble is SO good!!! Literally main channel quality.
If nothing else, the Metapod bit from the beginning would be a very funny short
i like the way the ash actor was like "yeah the hardest part of the show is that i have to actively dodge the projectiles and fire they throw at me" like he's on an active battlefield
I was not expecting such deep lore for this. Incredible! James making a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" joke sent me into the atmosphere, my god.
Pokemon was a little after my time but all I could think about was ninja turtles coming out of their shells lol
"Of all the characters that craved love to see explode the one I would pick is Brock." Absolutely savage.
I'm so happy that the last like 30 minutes is a session of plushaholics anonymous with a lengthy rationalization on why it's ok that the beautiful life size puppets aren't in Jenny's garage. Because obviously, someone out there has taken them home and lovingly restored them.
we have to believe someone saved the other pokemons! we have to!
Hey Jenny, Idk if you're gonna see this, but if you do, could you possibly change my name for end credits? The current one you have is my full dead name (Jessica Eberly) and I kinda forgot that was the name I had for patreon. I would be forever grateful ;-;
Usually the spreadsheet updates with the current display name but I'll make a note of it!
This choreography is .....idk I can't look away. It's all the dance moves I physically wouldn't be able to do, the slithering hip gyrations, the 90's b-boy skipping that is somehow a dance. This video was wonderful, just jenny enjoying some Pokemon. A+ The dancing will haunt my nightmares.
Whoa! A Campaign finance reform reference! I think talking point hasn't come up since Occupy Wall Street.
I feel like JK Rowling stole the climax of the HP series from Pokémon Live
This awoke a primal memory of being so SO jealous that a classmate of mine got to go to Pokemon Live, and came back with cards of mecha mewtwo for all the boys in class. :( He even gave them to kids that hated Pokemon, and I was irked about that forever lmao, because even though I + the other girls in my class were die hard fans and got him into it, it was still "for boys only". Bleh.
I hope things have gotten better for kids growing up now. That sucks, though :(
I think that figure was a golduck that lost his bill somehow :(
My bet is Sneasel
Somewhat of a restoration hobbyist - 10 years of mold is nigh unsalvageable, much less 25! You’d be stuck with them in massive glass cases, but I don’t think anybody could resist hugging those little (large) spore distributors. I’m sure you’re intimately familiar with what Disney’s archived textile props are stored in, haha. I think we can only speculate what the puppets made out of, but it probably wasn’t very high-quality material considering the rest of the show’s prop quality and its early pseudo-licensed situation. No shade to the prop engineer! Also as a superfan - I LOATHE the anime. Much like the “20 Pokémon sitting in an inhumane cartoonish zoo cage” advertising of the 90’s, it’s not really true to the world of Pokémon as it’s represented in the games, and much less the game characters that appear (big offenders: Brock, Misty, any of the NPCs that get sucked into Ash’s vortex of flanderization in later seasons.) Pokémon Live is sort of the extreme end of that barometer, and I love it for all that it is. Gay James concerned with Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the strong implications that Ash is actually a product of some sort of affair with Giovanni, causing her husband to leave her, Misty hating/lusting over Ash… I’ll leave some closing remarks in case you end up reading this long, long ramble in reply to your long, long ramble: Look into some of the more modern Pokémon! I know for a lot of millennials, Kanto is sort of a gold standard, and nostalgia demands that you collect as much merchandise from that time period as possible… but there’s some really awesome stuff they’ve put out recently. 1/1 scale Clodsire with a bunch of baby Woopers to ride all over it, 1/1 scale posable “boyfriend” Lucario plush, the sky is really the limit if you can catch them in stock. :) I’m sure that Lucario would make an amazing background prop, holding smaller plushies in its big furry paws.
I do have some plush from newer generations! They just didn't fit the video topic to me. I wanted to get not the Clodsire you described but the comfy friends one, from the same collection as my Quagsire, but it's been sold out for ages on the site. But a lot of the modern plush are a little too on model and untextured for me. I like to collect the Play By Play plush because they're weird and off-model, and the old Tomy plush that are like, hairy. It makes them look more luxurious and timeless to me. (The modern Tomy I Choose You line is also great and looks retro while having modern pokemon, but I don't have any of those yet because they're Japan exclusive)
The pikachu costume looks just like one of the janky rubber McDonald’s toys from the 2000 movie promotion I still have mine and a jigglypuff I keep them in the same place I store my Chanukah decorations so they accidentally became Chanukah Pokémon
Omg, I didn't think this was going to win! I'm thrilled!!
That ending was so sad. As someone with such a strong nostalgic connection to Pokemon and especially at that moment in time, it hurts to see them abandoned and essentially left to rest in such a sad state :(
The Don't Ask Don't Tell hit me like a freight train.
More impressions! More I say!
Jenny, don't ever change...hats.
I couldn't get over Brooklyn Ash so I looked him up, and yeah you're right, he (Mig Ayesa as Ash) is Australian!
I did not have Andrew Rannells dropping a "don't ask don't tell" reference on my Pokemon Live bingo card
I wonder if the director wanted to have Giovanni be Ash's dad or at least to keep it ambiguous, but the Pokemon Company stepped in to revise the script. Because it feels really clunky
Haha that intro! Jenny has really stepped up her intro game. Only 30 seconds in and already I'm laughing. Ok let's watch!
Holly shit, Porg evolved into Porgachu! Oh my god!
*Detective* Porgachu
I liked the Surprised Pikachu cameo at 1:45:58. Actually, there were kind of two at once.
Deeply weird that the story never bothers to involve Gary Oak??? Ash's rival AND the guy who took over Giovanni's gym? Would even give Prof Oak a reason to get involved. Along with Misty and Brock just being one-note buddies rather than yknow, actual gym leaders, it makes one suspect that the writers did not actually know much about this IP :ShockedPikachuFace: (Also that theatre even in 2018 would not be a safe place to visit, I suspect Jenny's instincts about mold are accurate)
the t shirt with the pokémon in CAGES omg totally misunderstanding the appeal of pokémon for kids lol. no one wanted to think the pokémon were in jail!! that's one of those things you start saying to be edgy when you're growing out of pokémon in middle school, not something you want to WEAR ON A SHIRT if you're the kid who is going to see the pikachu car!!
I somehow blundered though all of millennial childhood without learning a single thing about pokemon, this was a journey
I'm disappointed Jenny didn't give us more about the Cuban survivor of the plane crash of Sept 20, 2000. Where is she today?
She's famous on broadway and embarrassed about the plane crash
Not the Jumpscare that metapod gave me omg
Oh my gosh she was IN THE METAPOD WHAT
A perfect video for me to play stardew valley with it on in the background.
Omg same for me but with animal crossing 😭😭
The tiny uh-ohs are legendary
Maybe it's because we're a week away from another certain live show, but... Would it have been cooler if MechaMew2 died on a cross. Just out of nowhere.
The choir director lady walks out singing Water Under the Bridge by Adele
can’t stop laughing at the image of pikachu in shackles i wish they had actually done that
It’s pretty lame of Andrew Rannels to be ashamed of being in this show, it was a delight.
I really hope someone still has the puppets from the show. They were incredible
i have the same quagsire that’s on the mushroom stool so that was a delightful cameo
this is so cool so far- I usually wait until the end of a video to comment anything but the Lawrence Fishburne comparison made laugh too hard not to say something ok thanks bye
Aw man. So jealous of all your early 2000s Pokemon merch. Thanks for doing the video! Been loving it so far. Also, the Pikachu impression was amazing
Giovanni was the voice of Pegasus in Yu-Gi-Oh!
Oh wow. I thought he was the best performer, although the role was obviously not as thankless as say Ash or Misty. Giovanni doing a musical number flanked by a bunch of high kicking Team Rocket grunts was already such a great bit, having the performer be Pegasus is just perfect.
I started pre-laughing at the opening as I slowly realized that, no, that’s not a giant Metapod plush and yes, she will be getting out of it.
Requesting next month’s ramble to just be Pokémon impressions
"Jenny does 15 minutes of Pokemon impressions" is a no-lose ramble topic.
THANKS JENNY <3333
LMAOOO THAT INTRO
Porg pikachu 😍
the part where the news camera zooms right in on fake-pikachu with the other newsanchors next to him is deeply important to me
watching now and delighted to realize that Giovanni has the exact same voice as Pegasus from Yugioh. The theater kids to 4Kids pipeline was real.
Let's see if I make it through this video without buying some kind of vintage Pokemon toy lol
The surprise Andrew Rannels appearance took me out
He is everywhere. I discovered several weeks ago that he was not only in hamilton(at some point, obviously not original cast lol, played king george)but also played Hamilton in that liberty kids cartoon teachers would show in elementary school
I used to work at a warehouse where they bought merch that was left over from tours and sold it cheap in bulk, and they had a bunch of stuff from Pokémon Live. Cheap keychains, sticker sheets, lumpy little plush of exactly three different pokémons, and my personal favorite which was a knockoff lightsaber with a pokeball on the end of it.
You're like the guy that opened king tut's tomb
I love the puppets, especially Venusaur!
Jenny mentions the 2 B a Master and the Johto CDs, but I just want everyone here to know that they also released a Christmas CD at some point (before the dub voice actors changed) and it’s also a banger. Lol I know some of those parody songs better than the actual Christmas songs they’re based on.
The Pokémon Christmas Bash is the first album I play every December.
The pokemon impressions were so good misclicked and lost my Balatro run
Wow Jenny's Pokémon impressions were UNREAL
First 20 seconds courtesy of Takashi Miike
Glad to know I wasn’t alone in getting that vibe
Disturbing revelation that Jenny's hands are just always bleeding.
I chew
"I just evolved" 😂😂😂
forgot to mention in my original comment but my siblings and I had the rubber balls with Pokemon at the center and we also wanted the toys inside instead!! so we would painstakingly carve them out of the rubber with scissors LOL. they were way smaller than they appeared because of the optical effect but I remember so distinctly now the gummy texture of that tiny Blastoise, wow
oh my god I remember the dog tags, all the earliest merch for Pokemon was sooo weird like that lol. and the original ads with like cages and bug nets and stuff scooping up the Pokemon... couldn't have set the mood for the games less.
I guess it makes sense if you think of it in the context of the other Nintendo games of the time, like they had practically no merch at all, and what they did have mostly had to be mail ordered from their magazine lol. But really weird looking back at what a merch empire pokemon became
👍

Imagine my surprise when I literally just hit play on an old ramble video as I work my way through the backlog and Jenny posts this adding another 2 hours 😅. Not complaining, I'm here for it

Intro scared the hell out of me I thought something broke 😭
LETS GOOOOOOO
30 seconds in and im already obsessed
I didn't mention it in the video because it's difficult for me to talk about, but re: what I was working on this month I primarily just edited existing footage I already had shot for Starcruiser, hence posting a preview for that earlier this month. My horse Jorn passed away at the start of the month so I didn't feel capable of the right energy to be on camera for a couple weeks. I had steamed the wrinkles out of my metapod for this video and everything, but then I ended up having to delay. Today is actually Jorn's birthday! He would have been 21
Thanks for sharing that w us Jenny. And thanks for the vid
How many times did you film that opening?
I think 3 lol
I swear, an hour ago I was thinking to myself "imagine jenny dropped a new vid" lmao
