S3E7.5: The Edge
Thats's right, the strike's over. While we're not giving up on Eurospy just yet, this means we're no longer limited on bonus episodes. So what better a time than now to do a film Abi has been wanting to do since the very start of the show- The Edge! A brain god billionaire gets trapped in the alaskan wilderness with a man who wants to kill him. It's all very masculine.
But we couldn't do it alone! Joining us is Annie Kelly, Writer, antifeminism researcher, and Qanon Anonymous podcast's Britain correspondent!

URGENT APPEAL FOR ACTION FOR PALESTINE
There's not much I can provide here that will help assuage the ethnic cleansing we're all bearing witness to on our phones. The UN and entire international community must step in and hold Israel accountable for its ongoing genocide and relentless war crimes against the Palestinian people. The time for action is now: Join a solidarity protest, write to your MPs, do anything and everything in your power to disrupt and sabotage the machine we're all a part of that creates Death.
https://www.map.org.uk/donate/donate
If you want somewhere to put money, some UK activists have been disrupting arms manufacturers that supply the Israeli war machine, and any donations go towards their legal funds, and the legal funds of activists performing actions like this in the future.

Anthony Hopkins's "yeah" sounds reminds me of something his Odin says in one of the Thor movies. When Loki was chucking a tanty and the Hopster just points at him and his "Yaaah!" Apparently it wasn't scripted, that's just how Hoppo does godly authority (similar to billionaire authority, I guess?)
I know this is over a year ago but if you're interested in more movies starring Bart, you should check out The Bear, a movie that primarily stars Bart and a bear child actor duo.
That line about how "boys in Africa hunt lions" is actually a really cool story. I believe is the Massai who have a tradition of hunting a lion as a ritual for becoming a man. What's cool is that after one guy hunted his lion he felt awful because he'd just murdered a random animal that he knew was endangered. Now it's pretty common for Massai to, when they reach adulthood, be assigned a lion they have to protect instead of hunt. It's covered in the last episode of that BBC Africa series, and it details the ways other African nations/societies are fighting against climate change.
Wild to me that this character is played by AH. I only know the movie through an Archer cartoon reference, missed it when it was new.
I want to see this film remade as an episode of duck tales, where Scrooge McDuck and Glumgold get lost in the forest and they survive by reading from the Junior Woodchuck Guidebook, and they fight for the love of Glittering Goldie, but it's exactly the same film and Gyro Gearloose gets mauled by the bear first.
...in which Alec Balwin largely plays himself, and Anthony Hopkins plays the ultimate gestalt of a compulsive wikipedia-reader.
If this was a case of an unreliable narrator, then there was almost certainly no bird strike on that plane. That would explain the mismatch between the appearance and the sound of the birds, when he's being questioned after.
My instruction with tourniquets was in favor of putting them on just in case, bearing in mind that the context was not wilderness survival, so your time to a hospital was at most hours rather than days, and that you're better off losing the leg than dying from bleeding you didn't notice
I always thought eagles sound like seagulls. I would love for it to become movie convention that all birds must sound like a different bird though.
Judging by the comments, I appear to be the only one getting "Not Authorized" when I try to download this episode on my podcast app.
abigail's story about acting camp just sounds like shes describing a machine to give someone dissociative identity disorder
As for predator defense, bears only hunt humans if they are already sick or starving, these boys were playing on easy mode. Normally bears attack humans out of territorial concerns or getting scared while foraging, and thus are unlikely to return looking for a fight. And that's more of a tiger thing, there are some tigers that have eaten people and then decided people are delicious and the subsequently hunt humans, a big old Kodiak brown bears prefer fish and fruits overall, they aren't going to switch their major diet to humans. Considering there aren't that many people in middle of nowhere Alaska, the likelihood of a dedicated man eating bear is extremely unlikely.
So my wilderness first aid just expired but within 3 years of relatively up to date here's the tournqet sitch. The standard phase is "if it's life or limb, lose the limb" because you won't die from putting on my tournqet and leaving it there until you get medical help. Write the time on the arm so medical knows how to treat you, then don't remove it or the bleeding will start again. You might lose the limb but you won't die of bloodloss, it's basic triage. That being said, you should try wound packing and compression bandages first because if that stops the bleeding the risk of losing a limb goes way down. So the SOP is: try compression bandages, if still bleeding, apply tourniquet. Anyways please actually go take whatever British Stop the Bleed is and wilderness first aid stuff.
Never heard of this one before. From this episode, it sounds like a better version of The Grey.
Now that the strike is over, I've got a GENUINELY GOOD spy/comedy movie that I'd love to hear your take on! It's called "Undercover Blues"
Bart and Bart II have left us, but their successors are Tank and Honey Bump, both trained by the same man. The idea of nepotism bears is immensely funny to me.
I wish Bart were alive to portray Brother Stephen
"You have to make your own active listening noises!" took me out.
Pay for the whole seat, but you'll only need THE EDGE!
Just started listening to Qanon Anonymous last week cause I litterally just googled "conspiracy theory podcast" and jumped in blind and after a few episodes I was like "Yoooo, Liv Agar is here!?" and now I'm like "Yooo, Annie Kelly is here!?"
its funny that you guys made a lot jokes about his character because anthony hopkins is actually autistic
Fond memories of seeing The Edge at the cinema with my sister, and when the “Dedicated to Bart the Bear” card came up at the end, the two of us guffawed, and everyone else in the cinema remained absolutely silent. Magic.
Inspired by Alice's mention of the D of E: cannot recommend enough the movie Get Duked. Genuinely brilliant
Bear Speed - the highly anticipated sequel to Cocaine Bear.
Since y'all like old man Hopkins, you should watch Julie Taymor's "Titus" at some point. It really breathes some life into what is broadly considered one of Shakespeare's worse plays, so I'd especially love to hear Abi's thoughts on it. Also, Jessica Lange delivers a phenomenal performance in it whilst serving insane cunt.
An extraordinarily over-designed movie in the best way, the constant visual matching (to the point of literally breaking walls around it) of Imperial Rome and 40s Italian fascism is great
https://www1.essex.ac.uk/modules/Default.aspx?coursecode=EA114&level=4&period=SU&campus=LO&year=17 Abigail forgetting what cars are for 15 credits?
Have you thought about Dead Man, by Jim Jarmusch? Because hoo-boy, talk about a movie with things to say about masculinity, rife with sketchy characters on both sides of the camera.
Written by David Mamet, directed by Lee Tamahori—who also directed Die Another Day.
I love the subplot of the episode where Abby finds out that bears are the scariest animals on earth.
Black bears: become large Grizzly bears: play dead Polar bears: don't even bother
I’m here for the plane details. It really helps me picture the scenes. I can picture Canada, but what is the plane!
Holy shit, this is one of my favorites!
The cinematography alone is worth the price of admission.
Annie's unreliable narrator theory has me imagining Anthony Hopkins stalking the other two through the Alaskan wilderness with a wooden spear, bellowing useful but incredibly specific facts.
Pub quiz question: "In which film does Anthony Hopkins say the word 'motherfucker'?"
