S3E6: Secret Agent Fireball
The Strike may be over, but our commitment to Eurospy is ironclad.
This week, there's another dead Soviet defector, so there must be another microfilm with something important on it floating around europe. Fuck it, lets send our best spy to go have a general look about.
I'm not even going to front with you. This is my favourite episode we've recorded since Demolition Man.

URGENT APPEAL FOR ACTION FOR PALESTINE
Aid is not getting in to Gaza. There is no donation link I can provide here that will help assuage the ethnic cleansing we're all bearing witness to on our phones. The UN and entire international community must step in and hold Israel accountable for its ongoing genocide and relentless war crimes against the Palestinian people. The time for action is now: Join a solidarity protest, write to your MPs, do anything and everything in your power to disrupt and sabotage the machine we're all a part of that creates Death.
If you want somewhere to put money, some UK activists have been disrupting arms manufacturers that supply the Israeli war machine, and any donations go towards their legal funds, and the legal funds of activists performing actions like this in the future.

An interesting twist to the “betraying communism” line is that from what I understand of the actions of the two countries after the Sino-Soviet split, China was making distinctly betraying communism moves at that time, see Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge
Devon appreciation post: not only do they insist on maintaining the integrity of the Kauffman Star, the fact that they saw a spynonce paying a lady and assumed she was a psychic rather than a sex worker is, frankly, adorable.
I know i‘m late, but it has to be mentioned that there is a Bus line in Hamburg that actually operates an Amphibus.
It doesn’t have any of the coolness of the amphicar, but you should now that Hamburger still drive vehicles into the River
I literally said "Bobsun Dugnutt-ass name" at the exact same time as Devon I am inconsolable
“I wanna make this more rigid” yeah likely thing for November to want to do
Fun fact about Styropyro, the laser guy you mentioned. Dude has an actual condition that gives him testosterone poisoning. It's wild.
The theme fucks. Makes sense though. The composer is Carlo Savina, composer of a such films as Mr. Superinvisible, Slave Queen of Babylon, and The Godfather.
I know you guys are working through the IMDb list of euro spy films but you should totally watch the Jackal. It's got and evil Bruce Willis, Jack black and helpful former IRA members.
It also has Bruce Willis picking up gay guys in a bar.
I just discovered that “jazz outro dysphoria” is a thing. 😳
So hyped for the conformist! Also while the strike is over I hope this season continues, we've got an imdb list to get through!
Alice with the Dark Souls moan drop
The vape that kills you instantly is the one you use in Abigail's apartment without her permission
thank you Devon for editing in the theme
As a massive slut for panarabism and nasserist discourse I really really fuckin loved this episode
KAUFMAN TRANSGENDER!!!!! KAUFWOMAN!!!!!
I’d like to petition for an uncensored Patreon tier level, I would pay more to hear your epithets.
"A license to kill yourself is also a license not to kill yourself"
On Amphicars: I know at least one (1) person has an amphibious car in my local area because I have seen it at the lake before. Which is funny because the lake here is actually kind of small but I watched them drive this car into the water and boat about in it a couple years ago and then leave. It looked like it was in good shape from a distance.
my mom went to a bar that had the phones on the tables gimmick somewhere outside Boston in the 80s. no wrestling though.
I just love it when you all get super silly with it ❤️❤️❤️
ALBANY MENTIONED
Albany, New York is pronounced like All bun ee. I grew up near there. But if Dev calls it they can call it Al-bany.
I wanna put in a recommendation for the future cop season (whenever y’all get there): the Dirty Harry series. Boy does that have a lot to say about masculinity and also the soundtrack fucks
As a bonus the original is actually a movie AND the baddie is fuckin Garak from DS9 and he kills it
Sometimes listening to this podcast I get a really strong sense of the plot of the movie being reviewed. Today, all I was able to gather was that it's a spy movie in which drunk, brain-damaged Zapp Brannigan nonces on you in his amphibious cop car while a bunch of dudes get killed instantly by a pipe as they spin in a revolving chair, and also Alice somehow travelled back in time to be a part of the production to nonce on female professional wrestler armpit hair.
This is an incredible episode. The entire tangent over the German cars made me lose it.
I really dig the "not copyright infringing version of Secret Agent Man" from the opening credits
SAG-AFTRA have apparently reached an agreement earlier this morning which does open up film options but it would be really interesting to do a 1 on, 1 off between Euro Spy & Hollywood Spy movies to compare how different the styles were between regions during the same time period
The actual story of why Zapp Brannigan is given that voice by Billy West is actually really tragic. When the creators of Futurama were planning the series, their intention was that Zapp Brannigan was going to be voiced by Phil Hartman, who had voiced Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz on the Simpsons. However during preproduction Phil Hartman was killed by his wife in a murder-suicide. Fry was given the first name Philip in his honour, and Billy West voiced Zapp Brannigan as he thought Phil would.
I'm certainly enjoying this adventure through the history of spy films. It's really interesting to see how things had influenced others and turned into trends. I was a little nervous that it'd stop, but I'm glad it still continues.
Once when I stayed on a houseboat in Amsterdam, I gave directions to an amphicar that got lost on the canals.
I'd heard a mention of some sort of discord or twitter thread or something where people had advice on how to watch some of the more difficult to find Eurospy movies that have been watched by KJB in the past weeks. Can anyone kindly point me in that direction?
I did actually google Kaufman inflation after listening, and the first result was a 40 page academic article about how the invasion of Iraq shows that the marketplace of ideas is bullshit and doesn't work.
And this is how I find out the strike ended. Nice!
What else is Patreon money for but amphibious german police cars?
While the strike may be done I wish for this season to never end.
Just put a grumpy toddler to bed, this is perfect timing
hell of a title too
