S3E5: The Great Spy Chase
When an eccentric European aristocrat dies, his wife stands to inherit his collection of weapons patents. All the great powers of the world send their finest James Bond to attempt to claim them. How could this be anything other than great?
This one is a hugely enjoyable movie thats inexplicably horribly racist right in the middle. Like a wonderful lindt chocolate liqueur filled with piss.

URGENT APPEAL FOR AID FOR PALESTINE
SAG-AFTRA are still on strike and their donation links can be found in the description of the previous episode. However, right now there's only one link to provide. https://www.map.org.uk/donate/donate
What needs to happen in occupied Palestine cannot be accomplished with donations alone. The UN and entire international community must step in and hold Israel accountable for its ongoing genocide and relentless war crimes against the Palestinian people. Join a solidarity protest as soon as you can

I love the idea that, similar to Netflix accidentally and briefly putting the Babadook in the LGBTQ+ section, some record shop in 1960s France accidentally put a funk album in the Soviet section (I assume that used to be a section that record shops had in the '60s) and so it became a meme that the USSR is a super funky place. Maybe that's why Boney M did Rasputin and that song was a call-back to a decade old French meme? lol
"He has the ability, as a cantrip, to summon infinity Asians" nearly had me bursting out laughing loudly at work with zero desire to explain why.
Listening to this in 2024 when it was revealed that Amouranth was being abused and forced to stream by her boyfriend/husband
O yeah the beard thing. I know this because it comes up in the first Asterix and Obelix comicbook. It is that you get a point for every beard you are the first of the competitors to see.
You must forgive this rather odd mixture of actors, but I refuse to cast entirely Japaneeeeeeese
The conformist is one of the greatest films ever made, so hyped for you all to watch it :)
The 15-30-40 for counting beards does seem to be a reference to the French system of counting points in tennis, based on the face of a clock. Quinze is the first point, trente is the second point, and quarante is the third point because saying quarante-cinq is too inconvenient
My T shots used to come in a glass ampoule, stoked about Ampoule Chat
Alice running a Spycraft campaign is the least surprising thing. Fucking love Spycraft, wish more people were interested in it
millennials are killing the castle industry
As for castles and their expensiveness; I believe Nic Cage bought a castle. It became a massive expense and made him bankrupt.
Oh, one little meta-joke y'all missed : French Bond's name, Lagneau, means "The lamb" as in the idiom "meek as the lamb" which is the same in French - this name for this actor is doubly funny since Lino Ventura is a former pro wrestler & boxer and his entire acting career was always "easily exasperated laconic guy who's quick to throw a punch instead of arguing"
Thank you for introducing me to movies I wouldn’t have otherwise heard of. I was wondering if you would consider doing the girl with the dragon tattoo series? I know they adopted the first three books in Swedish. Also I know it’s a long shot but would you ever look at an episode of the Avengers TV series? I remember watching.m a few episodes on Christmas years back and absolutely being in love with Ms. Peel.
Perhaps Abbie's acquaintance could suggest to the person with the castle that they knock down everything apart from the central living quarters and convert the outworks into a more earthwork-star fort kinda configuration. Might be that a little modernisation would make it more attractive to potential buyers. Or perhaps see if any wealthy russians would like to deconstruct it stone by stone and re-build it in rostov-on-don...
God, now I guess you'll have to watch Day of the Jackal which also has France's murder squad against the OAS as the protagonists
While listening to this, I was thinking that it would adapt very well to a stage version, a lá The 39 Steps.
Barold is my favourite animal crossing villager
He was on my island and was the bane of my life during summer 2020
It will never not be funny to me every time Abby says something along the lines of "yeah my friends friend is having a really hard time selling their castle"
i wonder if this movie is where oss 117: rio ne répond plus got the bit about constantly getting jumped by chinese agents whose brother you've killed
Yes and no - this was a whole trope around the era (because Indochina war then Vietnam). The "joke" was : there are always more asians than you think, you can't tell them apart and they're often surprisingly competent. They'll probably take over the world soon. Yellow peril stuff, basically.
*looks at description* Just horribly racist? Alright, so we're one up on Goldfinger at least. *hears That Gunshot Sound Effect* Oh, it's made by the guys who did Les Tontons Flingueurs! Final Verdict Summary: "We liked it, but unfortunately it was made in France in 1964."
Les Barbouzes is a great, great, GREAT movie (and not even the best of this particular director/scriptwriter partnership !)
Absolutely done in by Barold Chuckle and the Sexual Barrier and we are 10 MINUTES IN.
this sounds heinous out of context eh
"if you're willing to overlook some heinous crimes, you'll have a good time watching" is a very on-brand thing for a British entertainer to say
The title music in this movie sounds like the Afro-Cuban Rhythm Club from Danger 5
LOVE me some Danger 5
I don't know if it made it's way into your Eurospy list, but I recently encountered Five Ashore in Singapore (Cinq Gars pour Singapore), a 1967 film which has the minor distinction of being the last film starring Sean Flynn (son of Errol) before he became a war correspondent in Vietnam and was likely murdered by the Khmer Rouge.
