Find bonus episodes at our reasonably-priced patreon!
https://www.patreon.com/killjamesbondAlright, after taking a brief vacation to the land of Lazenby, it's time to return to Jack Ryan. This one is a modern reboot from 2014 that is somehow equal parts James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Alex Rider Stormbreaker.
A shady Russian capitalist plans to cause 9/11 2. Thats the plot of the movie.

This movie feels so much like it was written about Saudi Arabia and then it had to be changed to Russia for some reason
Suppressors are actually quite effective especially when used with subsonic ammunition.. https://youtu.be/G_Fr5fJ2Bdk?si=ofo9PNZIfqJUkGe8
I've met two members of the CIA, and both of them could not fucking stop dropping references about being in the CIA. The one guy owned my dog's dog park friends. Did you know the CIA has merch? Like, funny Big Dog style t-shirts? That dude owned all of them, and wore nothing else. His dogs were great tho
In response to this movie I'd like to coin the term "fridgenapping", in which a female character is kidnapped by a villain with the expedient of progressing the protagonist's hero's journey and no further exploration into its effects on anyone
1:19:30 I think your proposed super-Bechdel test is similar to the Sexy Lamp Test, "Could your female character be replaced with a sexy lamp (possibly with a Post-It note to pass information) without meaningfully impacting the plot?" It sounds to me like Cathy and that one female CIA agent could not pass the test.
Tom Clancy's Jameson Bourned
A lot of people don't realize this but Natalia is actually the word for secretary in Russian and all women are given that name when they assume a secretarial job.
+1 for Leviathan
the discussion of eastern orthodox christianity being treated in this movie the way islam is treated in other similar movies never quite comes out and says it, so i will here: a whole lot of western xenophobia towards russia is based quite solidly and explicitly in orientalism and orientalist fantasies of, in this case, basically every nation touching the black sea. it's all "they Look White but they're Secret Asians!!!"
Thinking back to all of the imagery of Vladimir Putin as Ghengis Khan and his Mongol horde when the war kicked off in February. Meanwhile I'm just re-reading Césaire's Discourse on Colonialism and seeing how Putin takes the logics of neoimperialism to an extreme.
This movie reminded me a lot of True Lies and I still don't get why they refer to him as John P. Ryan and then for the rest of the movie they call him Jack. Good episode :)
Lol at all this convoluted nonsense to crash the economy when it turns out all you need is a girlboss that read too much rand
The suppressor outrage is so real thank you Alice. My dad post divorce bought a shit load of guns and a suppressor for his 9 caliber rifle. He is dumb as shit for 2 reasons. 1) Mf only shoots at a range 2) He got salty when he still heard the gun. If only he was Based and Alicepilled enough to have read anything once in his life 😔
I feel liken there needs to be a fucking our pussies counter for this episode. The amount of times that phrase is used in this episode is out of control
If Tom Clancy were around to do commentary he’d point out that CIA agents can’t say they’re in the CIA. Conveniently there’s a loophole where it’s fine to say you work for “the agency”
I hope you guys get to the xXx movies at some point.
Hearing about Kenneth Branagh's Russian accent just made me want to rewatch Tenet lol.
Shame they didn’t do a more realistic version where they send Jack Ryan to Wall Street to work for a “Bear Stearns 2” to fund the terrorism
good episode and also nice to hear abigail has a lot of work
I think the ‘boyboss’ point made is really interesting. I think this movie is an interesting comparison with Hunt For The Red October, which while it os also about Jack Ryan building his confidence and becoming a cool adventure dude, Ryan mostly expresses this with being clever and persuasive, the gunfight at the end we see that he bests the chef by outwitting him more than anything else. Contrast that to the more modern Tom Clancy movies Ryan just does a lot of Troop Shit.
what is it with hollywood movies unwilling to hire slavic actors for slavic roles?
"We have BIG PLAN, you know??"
Perfect timing
