Late to the post, but it's funny that drive thru ATMs are so mind blowing to Devon. I live in Colorado and we have drive thru weed stores here. In Texas, they have drive up margarita stores, so you can drink and drive without ever leaving your car! Car-brain knows no bounds here.
Americans are the loudest people in the world until I'm in a restaurant listening to a couple argue but I can only catch 1 out of every 3 words being said.
You're so right, I should be given a machine gun if I'm talking on the phone and someone is trying to talk to me at the same time
A gentle reminder that I sent a love letter to Swordfish to your inbox. It is heist & hacker season material.
Yall need to watch the piano tuner, the movie that bravely asks „what if a heist movie about a quirked up white boy was good?“
Baby Driver when he drives the baby, idk, I didn't watch the movie
As an American, who has had to share a breakfast table with an English couple, me thinks perhaps it is the English who are socially unaware. No one needs to hear ,at full volume, how crap a lovingly homemade breakfast is in comparison to Wheat-a-bix 🤣 We're essentially the same people, lol, just different accents

there are times when abi mentions something Americans TM do, and it reminds me her american associates are mainly LA residents. like when november mentions school food being pheasant in the quiller memorandum, it's a helpful reminder that y'all live on practically a different planet from me lol
Dev saying “this is one of the most annoying films I’ve ever seen” was life-giving. I have *always* hated this movie
To be a bit fair the director has been trying to make this exact movie since he did the music video for Mint Royale - Blue Song... The heist at the start where BD does a load of weird shit to the music is pretty much a straight rip from that MV, and honestly, I can respect the grind to get to the point where you can do those things you wanted to do as a teen/young-adult.
RE: Americans Being Loud - I work at a hospital. The things I have heard are INSANE. Older people putting their phone on speaker at max volume to talk to their insurance. Full SSNs and DoB and the exact problem they've been having with their pissing and home address. We are a lost people
VINDICATEEEEEED I saw this in theatres with my roommates when it came out and they were baffled when I said I hated it, thank you SO MUCH for this very cathartic for me episode
The car crash that diverges your neurons is like the injury that gave Finder his Finding Powers. The Debra stuff reminds me of the Standard Potenza spoof of a dudebro podcast saying "my ideal woman is young enough to be my daughter, but treats me like my mum" and I'm not happy about how accurately that describes so many men. If you want a heist movie about a neurodivergent guy who falls in with the wrong crowd and uses his transit related hyperfixation to do crimes, I recommend the Australian movie Malcolm. (And if you'd like a Melbourne team driver with a movie podcast as a guest, the Weekly Planet are right there.)
As a long time restaurant worker... The female server who trauma dumps on her tables is a VERY REAL archetype... (usually the female server with a crippling addiction)
In response to some of the banter near the end, I’d just like to point out that feeling a deep, personal, only-you connection to a song that 1 billion other people also feel that connection to means the song did its job. You don’t have to think that music is a numerically niche interest for this to work.
Jamie Foxx in Baby Driver: My favorite song is John Cage's 4'33".
The diner that makes you exposit was in the sandman TV show I'm pretty sure
For getting rid of something from your YouTube Shorts feed, try pausing every video like it as soon as it starts, hitting the three dots in the top right corner and selecting "don't recommend this channel". I eventually killed those fuckass movie clips with names of DND classes haphazardly stuck over the characters this way. That style of short about The Green Book would be hilarious tho.
If you want a movie with a character who hates music but has good reason, while still staying in Robbery Season, I suggest watching Sound of Noise (2010)
That's my son's fave movie and it's a brilliant one use of music with action. FFs
I might have missed it, but Wright wasn’t just gestating the idea for 20 years. He prototyped it for Mint Royale/Blue Song, with Noel Fielding and pals.
As somone with "no loud noise" autism whose sorry excuse of a father thinks volume equals persuasiveness.... yeah.....
I've been waiting for this episode SINCE you guys started doing non james bond films and. so extremely devestated lol but still glad to hear the episode.
Arvo Pärt mentioned!!!
It's amazing that this movie contains not one no madam but indeed two celebrities by whom I feel personally fucking BETRAYED.
I watched Drive recently while having a big bout of depression, just to kinda lean in to the dumb guy who thinks Ryan Gosling is literally him thing, and ultimately was kinda disappointed in the movie past the opening getaway driving scene. I don't know what I expected, but the movie ended up being a Shane movie (Shane's a fine movie but I personally don't like Shane movies). I told my friends that I was sort of let down that Drive was a Shane movie and didn't have more driving, and I was told "oh man you should see Baby Driver then, it's like Drive but better in every way. Glad I didn't see Baby Driver, it kinda sounds like it's insufferable enough to make me appreciate Drive.
Apologies if somebody already mentioned it (I did search but didn't see it) one of Edgar Wright's earlier works is a music video with the same concept of this movie. Only it's funnier. Blue Song by Mint Royale (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfrcZsKcVxU ). Can't really blame him for getting two paydays out of one idea. Especially because one of them would have been lorge. Not sure if it's sodium pentothal made me share that random fact or if my nonsense cannot be stopped.
I was also gong to post that, but figured I'd check to see if anyone else had yet. :-) Notably the music video features the two main actors from The Mighty Boosh!
This is one of my Ex's favorite movies, I thought it was Fine, Okay, A Movie that Entertained Me. I am very prepared to hear three cool people be mean to this movie.
I actually knew Ansel. Much more OG about Warhammer than that poser Henry Cavill.
Oh god it just hit me Buddy and Darling are like Baby in that they are common placeholder names in pop music - gah this is like when I thought a good musical would be every song about “Johnny” happening to the same guy but in my defense I was 15. I’ve heard defense of this movie in that oh it’s so stylized and over the top and cartoonish, it’s a fantasy musical not ment to be taken seriously well you know who also does that? Baz Lurhmann and you know what Baz Lurhmann films also have? Consequences! Satine dies! Speaking of which the modern broadway version of Moulin Rouge ends with Satine dying and then everyone comes back for a fun revue number and this is happening all over musicals now cause god forbid someone pay money to feel bad.
I'm not saying it's not weird to have no black people in the movie, but as an Atlantan I can entirely believe a scenario where Baby could go a long time without a black person "being in the shot" as it were. I'm not surprised at all by the lack of black bank tellers, and I can think of a couple of midtown restaurants where they would have an existential crisis at the suggestion that their lack of black staff or customers has meaning and yet the fact will remain.
I hate that this movie is why all trailers look like that now
A full-on double Waingro all the way across the sky 🌈
I'm so lost, what is a waingro
had an amazing time watching this movie and listening to this episode, this movie is truly the music video experience, its simplicity reminds me of the early 2000s skits people would put in the middle of the old music videos, bad acting and all the female characters being so comedically bad and the whitewashing of atlanta georgia are things that a better movie could have done something cool with , or at least acknowledged as choices and not "just how the world is, magically" this movie is so american <3 middle class americans do not meaningfully suffer, therefore they lose the ability to connect with others, which again would make a much cooler movie to address , comraderie of those who inflict and suffer violence vs the stubbornly Dissasociated Baby. shoutout to the edititing staff and no one else
I enjoyed it because I had gone into this movie expecting nothing but a bunch of action scenes set to music, and it certainly delivered on that level. It is also very clear that the movie is trying to be a Michael Mann style intricate heist movie with crosses and double crosses and a clever protagonist trying to outsmart everyone else and get away clean. It completely fails at this because neither the main character nor the writing is smart enough to make this work.
I do like that he has loads of sunglasses and iPods because he steals cars and takes them from the glovebox, and that the movie doesn't feel the need to spell this out
Please lord do Thief (Michael Mann) before this season is over 🙏
I think I watch this movie on a plane or something. Hade been told it was some genius filmmaking shit by some stupid youtube video. My reaction was something like: I dont get what is so great about this movie and they must be doing some artsy stuff i don't get with the girlfriend character and how they show them because that feelt really odd.
I can't disagree with any of the content or vibe-based criticisms of this movie, but, it also just slaps and I still really like it
Like "this is like the seventh song that we've done the cuts in sync to the beats with" Well yeah, it's the cuts in sync to the beats movie. That's what it is.
Exposition Restaurant NEEDS to be a running gag
I've always been lukewarm on this flick but I'd never considered that it was the anti-Dancer in the Dark with that musical stuff.
Born to mix, forced to heist
Making JAMIE FOXX of all people the character who hates music is insane
They really are running out reasons for me to stop going to the movies. I cannot believe this trash is actually about a kid named baby that’s a driver. This is pre AI slop slop ❤️you alllll🌈
Disappointed that three switched on ND people missed the concept of Baby's 50's musical percieved reality blurring with actual reality
If you ever do tank season Fury would really show you what radicalized burnthal. Spending all his time with Shia Lebouf method acting a far right evangelist
So what you're saying is this isn't a film about driving a baby and it isn't a film about an infant Adam Driver
Of course the movie is well loved and financially successful, it was basically made for teenagers who have never seen a complex movie before
Live in Atlanta; can confirm it devastated the local economy that had sprung up around filming, but can also confirm it was more than deserved - part of the (at least lip service) reason given by at least some of the filmmakers for abandoning GA was the insanely stringent and punishing abortion laws that went into effect under Governor Kemp.
I thought it was a pretty common interpretation that the final scene is also a fantasy and he's not really getting out of prison to the dream life, for all the reasons they listed.
That's a very reasonable interpretation to put on it, but the fact that she's not explicitly 50 styled, driving and old 50s car makes me think it's real and it was just a white boy happy ending
I think this happened, bit it could have been made up. Basically it was supposed to be Michael Myers mask, but the deal went through, then Edgar Wright realized "yo, I actually KNOW a famous Mike Myers." And called to get tye Okay to use the Austin Powers mask
The Kevin Spacey cancellation did happen before this movie came out
More pumped now for when you get to "The Driver" and "The Getaway"
Down in Newark CA right by SF and it is positively chilly here. I might not have theory of mind, but I am curled up in my blankets with a hot mug of tea, you limey bastards. I'm sorry, that was rude, I parasocially care for all of you deeply.
You know it's an authentic 50's diner in the south because it's racially segregated.
I am beyond hype for Blues Brothers. A movie with a famously unproblematic cast... Wait, what's this? I'm being handed a comically long list! Oh no!
Yes titané! Looking forward to hearing about movies first male-to-male trans guy
I really want to know how to be one of those in real life 😅
Ready to disagree with everything in this episode because only bad movies can be good and all good movies bore me to sleep 🙂↕️
Ok, final post, but "JD, who put the asian in home invasion" is played by the guy who was Albert Nguyen in Barry. The fact this wasn't mentioned by any of the podders indicates that they're still yet to see Barry and should probably get around to it some time.
Holy shit this movie really is just Drive if it sucked ass
People loudly oversharing in American restaurants is literally so much fun though. Practically all my fiance and I do on dates is gossip in Italian about what the people at tables around us are talking about
This movie was weird in a very specific way to me and a handful of other people since Ansel Elgort looks exactly like Alex "Neeb" Sunderhaft, Americas best Starcraft 2 player, a fella I'd met a couple times in the past, around when this movie came out. Actually, come to think of it there are quite a few other actors who look like Starcraft 2 progamers but im only going to bring it up when they appear in films covered by this podcast.
Edgar Wright needs to team up with Simon Pegg again to make movies. Why are they not making movies together anymore? Perhaps they're just very different people now. Different sensibilities. Probably can't make a red hot banger together anymore. Makes sense. Pegg quit drinking and hung out with Tom Cruise too much. Edgar Wright did whatever and hanged out with Quentin Tarantino too much. Nick Frost lost a bunch of weight. Probably can't happen. But, in the offchance that it's a good idea, I think Edgar Wright could do with a proper Pegging (2 g's, get it?)
It’s been a rough week, thank you for doing a favorite!
Devin is correct to view drive thru with contempt. I wonder what they’ll say when they see a Chick-fil-A drive thru
The other day someone mentioned drive-in movie theaters and I remember thinking what an incredibly American mid 20th century invention they are
This is probably a bit more Mob Season than Heist Season but I have a soft spot for Ghost Dog: Way Of The Samurai, could make for a fun episode.
It's an incredible entry in the "the mafia are actually pathetic" movies I would love for them to deep dive on the idea of an isolated guy picking up a completely foreign, arguably non-existent code of honor and living by it A Le Samourai / Ghost Dog double feature please
The whole "get what you want never grow up" white boy fantasy of wright's work plays infinitely worse in crime drama than in comedy, it's wild
Yeah, but BRMC is fucking great
No, fuck that scene driving between two trucks backing out. I will show you that street and you will say, “wow, only the stupidest morherfucker would think of a getaway car going down this street, so much so it calls into question the decision to film this, that’s so dumb that it tarnishes the finished product, what garbage.”
And it’s good that they’re not making movies there anymore. Fuck you get outta my state!
Ah yes. Baby Driver. The movie where 3/5 main cast are convicted sex offenders. It was an ADHD drug movie that had needle drops and stunt driving that itched that part of my brain. Still not Edgar Wright’s best work, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim remain goated.
This was the movie I watched the last day I ever stayed at my moms house before I left and never came back. Watched it with my sisters and we spent the entire time deciding if the girl character was being Mommy or Girlfriend (or Whore but she didn’t hit whore for a while and we thought she wouldn’t cuz she was doing so much Good Girl Mommy shit ) and I remember pretty far into the movie when she finally started hitting Whore and we were like OMGGG SHE HIT ALL 3 DOES THAT MEANS SHES A FULLY REALIZED PERSON?? YAAYY!!! it was funny. Memory is somewhat marred by me being so stressed about my abusive brother being home that I couldn’t feel safe even with the distraction but otherwise it was fun
This is a movie best watched on a plane where the dull roar and low oxygen makes an extended music video feel like a movie. In any other context it falls apart.
Rewatched this movie last week, I was astounded by how dogshit it was. Has Edgar Wright ever made a good movie?
I like Hot Fuzz but I'm not sure it's objectively good in film terms. I feel like that's too much to put on it.
I pass the waitress a note. It says 'My father was a toolmaker.' She looks up. I am Keir Starmer
What is next weeks bonus episode? Google keeps sending me to a movie called titan.
It’s a French movie called Titaine, it’s really good!
For the remaining catalogue of Heist season, have you considered Heist (2001) featuring the late great Gene Hackman? It is unfortunately directed by David Mamet, but it’s got a stacked cast and some Things to say about masculinity.
Actual direct quote from November in this episode: "Thank you Kevin Spacey"
"Baby Shooter" took me out as if I were an Afghan civilian.
I’am once again asking for you to do an heist episode on “Hell or high water” and “no Country for old men” because it says something the boomers wont accept. An older man accepting he cant keep up with modern police work and quits his job
The NCfOM book gives you a little bit more information on Sheriff Bell's background, he survives World War II and gets a medal because he was a coward
I remember not liking this movie when I saw it, I thought the writing was stupid because one of the major conflicts in the plot was completely avoidable. One of those things where the characters made the dumbest decision possible, like had they done anything else they would have been totally fine and avoided the negative consequences. Interested to see how my thoughts compare to yalls'.
Oh. This is going to be Atomic Blonde again (remembering really liking a movie I watched a decade ago and watching it get disassembled to be reminded how terrible my taste was/is). Ah well.
Hello, James! How is the weather at your end?
I work outside. I‘ve been in no shade 34 degrees all day and am currently dragging myself home after my boss finally let us out. I would KILL for 16 and mild
The Spirit of 85 or whatever reminded me of the Belgrade Phantom, a Yugoslavian car thief who stole a white Porsche 911 from a tennis star and proceeded to show up Tito's authorities in a series of public joyrides for a while.
It is a GTA movie! The scene with the Marine is almost shot for shot remake of the big bank robbery in GTA 4.
🎶It's a cold and It's a low-energy cowabunga🎶
Hello, carley! How is the weather at your end?
As an American I'd like to be offended by the bit about us not having a theory of mind but the guy behind the window over my bathroom sink has a red dot on his face that was never there before and it is distracting me.
Sadly a byproduct of being a Gamer nation
I love an episode full of acronyms I can't understand
Shout out to Devon for the "I still kiss and shake hands with-" "Danger?" That was funny and did not get the reaction it deserved
Blinded by the balls on this post Excited to learn from my pair of social friends why one of the coolest movies I've ever seen sucks Yes his mom even *looked* like Debra The meat salesman was Paul Williams, the guy who wrote Rainbow Connection The interior lighting at the end- remembered towards the beginning of the movie Darling says that Buddy "sees red"
- Takes place in Atlanta, the cultural capitol of Black America - Has barely any black characters in it, none of which have any depth - Worships 50s Americana
Watching baby driver and just shaking my head for every cancelled actor who turns up
Listening to this episode on the train and shaking my head every time they say one of the actor's names
