S4E32: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Welcome to: KJB Roundtable. On this stimulating episode, the girls are joined by Praxiscast's Rob and Tran Girlismo's Victoria Scott to discuss 2006's Seminal 'Tokyo Drift'.
Considered by many to be the high point of the Fast and Furious franchise, Tokyo Drift is famous for being the only movie in the series that's actually about the act of street racing, as well as infamous for having a wooden lead and absolutely fucking the timeline up for everyone.

The mention of “red tide” and I am straight to the comments for the menstruation 🩸 A bit disappointed to find out it is football 🥳
Fun fact: my partner recently added a metamour to the polycule who's literally a middle aged white mom that is a real member of an actual Yakuza! Long way of saying sorry Abby, it really was just a skill issue with your audition. </3
What made the moonlight drift scene so funny to my partner and me was how they never introduce them to the other drifters. There's no transitional scene. So what you have is the two of them eating vending machine food. Then suddenly in the middle of a convoy of what you can only assume is a school of drifting cars that ambiently move through the area.
I am curious, are you going to cover Superfast!, the fast and furious parody film?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TnkXpJCoY9c Awesome Drift simulator
When I watched this in Highschool as an Australian trans fem egg, Nathalie Kelley's (The actress who plays Neela) performance had a significant influence on my fem self in retrospect.
So, Han's snacking in this film, is actually explained by Justin Lin's previous film, Better Luck Tomorrow. The character of Han is introduced in that film, same actor and everything. Han smokes like a chimney in that movie. Therefore, they decided to have him snack compulsively in this film, as a substitute for his smoking habit! Him fleeing to Japan in this movie, is referencing the events from Better Luck Tomorrow, where he is involved in a homicide. Technically, this makes Better Luck Tomorrow a part of the same cinematic universe as The Fast and the Furious. It's a pretty good movie, and a heist film to boot. Y'all should check it out for the pod!
Thank you Abi for my biannual reminder that my school having metal detectors was not normal
If you're still doing Heist season, consider 1999's Entrapment with old Connery.
One of the things that happened when I first saw this film, which was back in the days of DVD rentals. The one of Han’s crew, the female mechanic is played by Keiko Kitagawa. I recognised her since she was also in the live action “Bishôjo Senshi Sailor Moon”. This resulted in me jumping up, pointing at the screen and yelling “That’s fucking Sailor Mars!” It is the high water mark because it has a Sailor Scout.
You missed a chance at the ending of the movie after you dovetail in Vin Diesel's cameo to call it the Fast and the Furyan!
I desperately hope they cover Transformers: Age of Extinction in the future so Abby can see how they treat the unnecessarily underaged girl in *that* movie
I called someone a nong (idiot) today and because I listen to this podcast the word nonce has been added to my vocabulary. I have to be very careful not to mix them up because they are not interchangeable.
Went to an anime store with my wife yesterday, saw some stuff from Initial D, vaguely remember playing the arcade game growing up, almost got into initial D for a few hours. I kind of want a Mitsubishi
6:23 Lucas Black called Charlie Kirk a Christian martyr nearly two weeks before his death!? What did he know, and how!?
re: adverse conditions movie club and the ethics of giving jeff benzos your patreon dollars...let's say hypothetically that you had a particular patreon hog with a great plex library and good pirate skills. would KJB be interested in having some help getting your movies streamed to you in the best available quality?
The jokes at Paul Walker's expense never get old, much like Paul Walker's girlfriends
as with convergent evolution all street car racing trends towards crab.
It's insanely endearing the way Abby is stunlocked by the audacity of the Southern Chud
Sorry, tech heresy aside I am now transfixed by the idea of putting a rotary engine in an old style Mustang because I'm sure it would be weird as hell and piss everyone off
Mike Finnegan put a 2JZ with Twin Turbos in a 69 Charger a couple of years back 😂🤣
One could make a really sick 2stwp garage beat with that twinkle drop honestly
They let Paul Walker drive badly. Once.
Only as compared to the Ultimate Patriarch: Vin Diesel. Once Paul Walker gains the approval of Vin Diesel, he's allowed to drive well.
Isekai: Solo Leveling A Housing Development
In fairness to the viper driver he probably spun because that car just did that of its own volition
How is it that the phrase “We’re almost there Twink” in Lucas Black voice was not sampled? I ask you
Also this episode is a litmus test on figuring out if any other fans of Kill James Bond are also fans of RTGame
Devon I need you to know, what I gasped upon realizing the context of the photo
The "He is underage" line. You need to be 18 to have a drivers license in Japan according to what I've read. I guess they could all be driving without licenses or with fake ones or something. I don't know enough about driving to know how hard/easy it is to not get caught driving without permission
Mahjong grandmasters are actually GRANDMAsters
So this is going to be a bit of a stretch, but for some reason the first race up the parking garage reminded me of Cool Hand Luke for some reason - the boxing scene. It's obvious from the first corner that our whiteboy is cooked, DK took the turn half an inch from the wall, he slams full force into the wall. And then it goes on. And on. Slams every wall, car, pylon on the way. Every spectator goes from wincing to groans, DK even J-turns,
*parks* and waits up for him. And he could just stop, I mean since it's not even his car he really should have stopped after destroying the rear axle or whatever ; but he soldiers on all the way to the top. Won't back down, won't stay down.
Han Seoul-Oh.
An enormous opportunity was missed, for our entire team of very British hosts to inexplicably speak with hideous "Southern" accents 🤠 Yeehaw. 🚗
If November had succeeded in skipping "Smarm" rating, would that make it the CUM system? And why did they miss the opportunity to make that joke.
Abi saying "they're all going sideways, it's like an Ocarina of Time speedrun" took me tf out. I love when my incredibly niche interests collide
Maybe all the under age references are the script writers venting about Paul Walker
Damn I really want to hear Abis' opinion on Euphoria if this is how she reacts to the main characters' love interest in a high school movie being depicted as attractive
The mahjong description did send me, it feels like introducing Le Chiffre by having him win a round of poker with a pair of jacks (It could have been a very good bit if you just gave great hands to everyone *except* the player winning with tanyao)
The instinct to not rate misogyny for any movie above a 9 because of Goldfinger's textual corrective rape makes me want to start a petition to retroactively re-evaluate Goldfinger's M score to a 10, because if anything in the world deserves a hard cap it's the """hero's"""" only plot relevant act being raping a lesbian until she's straight (and therefore morally good.) EDIT: I also think that SA should count towards both Unprovoked violence and Misogyny, but that's a side-issue.
Great episode! Surprised that y’all haven’t done an episode on The Russia House (1990). It stars Sean Connery and is a spy movie largely shot on location in the USSR, it’s a great watch too
oh man, seconded. the pacing is a little ropey but the vibes are immaculate. and it's such an interesting soviet time capsule.
Abby nerding out over Toonami, Tenchi Muyo shit is too cute for words 🤭
They put a Japanese engine in an American car, but what if they put a French engine into a Japanese car
It would be pretty MR2
To be clear re "gaijin", it is more or less treated in official Japanese life as a slur, with "gaikokujin" as the acceptable equivalent. It's one of those cases where it didn't necessarily need to be a slur but enough people put enough stank on it for long enough that everyone knows what you're getting across when you say it.
Just relistened, and I gotta say, サイゼリヤに行ってみろ、パスタとガーリックトーストが700円で食えるぞ、お釜
Every time they say "Han" I can only picture "Dr Han" from those memes
I am a surgeon!
The girlfriend at the beginning is doing consensual vehicular non-monogamy.
Drive-by cuckolding
Something that I think got lost in the intervening years that make a lot of the director's decisions make more sense (doesn't make them Good, but it does make sense) is that this movie wasn't aimed at the same audience as the first or later movies in the series. The first (and most of them after 4) was geared towards an audience of men 13-35, 2nd was slightly younger at 13-25. But this one was specifically made with teen boys aged 13-20 as the intended viewer. The camera expects you to be a 16yo guy who dreams of having a cool car and your hot classmate being into you despite being a dork and cool crime guys letting you do stuff you're not allowed to do & even respecting you. It was meant to be wish fulfillment for that demographic.
Yeah I was right in that age group and at the time I thought that 1 was ok and that 2 boring, but that Drift was the right kind of corny.
Listening to some episodes, particularly ones like this, reminds me of watching the 1979 movie Stalker. By which I mean whatever the entertainment or cultural value of what you are doing, I feel like it could be unhealthy for you to be enmired in such a toxic space, even for the sake of a worthwhile creative endeavour. TLDR If you're going to do the whole franchise consider hazmat gear. The good stuff.
Yay Victoria! Boo this movie!
"The first thing this movie does is show us a panty shot of an underage girl" Damn they really went entirely Japane~se from the outset
WAR DAMN EAGLE
I did amateur sumo for several months last year. If the KJB crew are into sumo, I will fully get back into it for parasocial reasons Ussumo.org/map to find an amateur club near you if you are in the United States. I joined one in the big city I moved to in my early 30s, and after signing up found out that there was a club in my hometown. It's also incredibly easy to start your own sumo club. you basically need a circle drawn on the ground and a strong canvas belt. (Of course it's better to have a battle rope or garden hose on the ground, and a proper duck cotton canvas mawashi. You can buy them online or you can just buy 7+ yards of canvas and fold it over) They are also generally relaxed, body positive spaces for a huge variety of people with different identities.
Damn, Nova's wife sounds extremely cool.
YES
Entire podcast has been building to "odd mixture of styles" to describe the Tokyo Drift RB26 Mustang
After hearing all about the Alabamam Chud, I cannot wait until Y'all do "Big Trouble in Little China"
Simultaneous zero and 7 smarm score. And hell, C and M are going to be so high or so low depending on how they interpret Jack Burton's characterization vs the Chinese Americans around him
Jesus drifting on the water, Sweet Jesus drifting in the sky Yakuza debt, he pimped my 'vette He put on spinners and made me a winner Now I can hold my, my, my head high
Vin Diesel does Fast and Furious so he can make Riddick movies, and Riddick movies so he can make Witch Hunters.
I have transgirlismo waiting in my queue and when I opened this and heard Victoria is on it I made some very gay noises
It's only in the first 20 minutes, but I'm getting semantic satiation from "Footballman"
I had to check to see who "she" was who's in the next Fast and Furious, went to Wikipedia, and screamed. Funnily enough, that's the only one of these I've actually seen and I saw it in cinemas too. The reason why escapes me.
Same here. Watch 2 Fast 2 Furious at my cousin's house after it was released on dvd, and then my sister invited me to see the fourth one in theaters because nostalgia
Insane to just drop a "Japan is the second most pedophilic nation in the world". What a racist thing to say.
I don't know, when you can't even watch a nice lesbian/dragon maid fetish show without it turning into kiddie porn maybe some mockery is in order.
Between Paul Walker the carpedo, the star of this film being a christofascist, and the "Legal issues" section of Vin Diesel's wikipedia page, are there any actors playing the protagonists in these movies who aren't rancid? is there a hiring requirement?
Shame the Hulk car is in a second scene and thus disqualified from a Kaufman Star 😔
Fun fact that I'm like 90% sure wasn't a feverdream: In ~2007-2008 the Sprouse twins released a ghost-written book series called Ronin 47 that my parents got for me because hey, that's my name! The books are basically what if Alex Pettyfer in Stormbreaker were TWO guys and those two guys were Dylan and Cole Sprouse and they were weebs with it? And the second book in that series is basically a STRAIGHT rip-off of Tokyo Drift except Skateboard instead of Car. It even has a race in a spiral parking garage.
For a long time I've wanted a high school movie where all the actors are past middle age and you are duty-bound as a member of the audience to accept that they are children and buy in to the premise. The main pair of kids are Jennifer Coolidge and Wallace Shawn.
I've seen this in 80s B Horror movies
The podcast that makes me want to buy and build a drift car
Fuck yesssss Victoria Scott
Wondering if the team are going to take on the extra homework by watching 'Los Bandoleros' (2009) which is the short film serving as the bridge between 2F2F and F&F, and said by Wikipedia to "hold together the entire Fast & Furious timeline." No racing - just slice of life with a bit of heist prep work.
Are they also planning to watch 'Hobbes & Shaw', the spinoff with the Rock and Statham doing secret agent shit the whole time? Actually a pretty fun movie tbh
Very strange to hear people discussing a character called The Drift King and not making RTgame jokes
Came here to post this
War Eagle I went to high school with a tall blonde American trans woman with a southern accent, I can send her Abi's way to work on her accent work. (Went to school with her pre-transition. She was an honorable footballsgirl) She asked out my sister a few years after high school. Isn't the Monte Carlo the first car you get in Midnight Club 3? I loved the 57 Chevy Bel Air too much to appreciate whatever the other car was
The first bit of this movie sounds like various porn plots. "Oh, this guy beat you in a race, now I'm going to cuck you with him!", "Oh Mr police officer, isn't there some way we could work this out?", "I'm getting isekei'd to Japan!".
American High School in media is insane. Everyone is an adult, they're insanely sexualized, and they acting nothing like what actual high schoolers are like (which is being dumb and acting cringey). Why is there this persistent fantasy of making high school seem cooler than it was or is?
I think if you're an adolescent audience watching it, it makes sense. It's what I wanted to watch when I was young. It's very weird if you're an adult watching it, and it's very very weird if you're an adult producing it.
Devastating opening drop combo.
A wild Rob has appeared!
10:26 I appreciate Victoria's interjection about the Monte Carlo (and subsequent explanations about cars). As a not-car person, I feel like I'm reading an annotated Shakespeare for context. Also (I haven't seen this) I had not known how gross this was about women/girls, but I guess that tracks considering Justin Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow had a scene where high school guys speculate if a girl they know was in a porn and a really gross scene where the guys pay for a sex worker while at an academic bowl tournament. In undergrad I really wanted to support Asian American indie film, but BLT always left me feeling off.
Incredible thumbnail
