S4E25: The Descent
It's our spoooky halloween episode, and this year, lets watch a movie that has an all-woman cast and yet somehow manages to say absolutely nothing about femininity.

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla
https://www.waterislifegaza.org/
-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

***GAAAAAAAAAAAAH***[ snarls fiendishly ]
As a native southern Appalachian, thank you soooo much for saying it correctly (in American English). My whole body rejoiced with it's accuracy.
After hearing this, I really want to hear the team do Bodies Bodies Bodies.
Being myself a former Appalachian American, yes Appalachia is spooky. But not for any supernatural reasons, ghosts are not real. Its the people you need to worry most about
Sara should have instead guilted Juno into a toxic lesbian relationship I think. They could definitely get each other out of the caves and also definitely make each other dramatically worse.
Can't believe they forgot the number one rule in the Prima strategy guide for caves: Don't Go In The Hole!!!
Johnny Utah-rus
Can't believe they made a prequel to this called Juno (2007)
I鈥檓 not a schemer but i scheme a lot and when I scheme it works
So you鈥檙e the hot evil friend?
Of note: the Appalachians and the Scottish Highlands are actually the same mountain range.
As someone who鈥檚 southern Appalachian, hearing November pronounce it the Pennsylvania Way is almost like Uncanny Valley.
Someone might have mentioned this, but horses did exist in North Anerica prehistoric ally. In fact, horses evolved in what eventually became North America and only became extinct around the same time humans migrated in the late part of the last ice age. So maybe the horse art was from pre-Clovis migrants from even earlier than the ancestors of the indigenous people of North America (a thing that could be real in the universe of the movie)
I know that the "Goon Cave" concept is more topical, but aren't the dudes in this literally CHUD's?
I want to hear your takes on Bone Tomohawk with regards to Native Horror
May I please recommend Foolproof (2003) for heist season? It's a Canadian movie about three people (including a VERY young Ryan Reynolds) who plan heists for fun without intended to ever steal anything, and then the villain (David Suchet doing An Accent) forces them to do a heist for real. I always found it a fun romp and I'm deeply curious to know how you'll score it.
I鈥檝e been calling him clive Warren since that shit gervais HBO show
Dog soldiers mentioned come on England ooooooo
Three favourite higher demons November Abigail and Devon

Abi has Ghost now?
I hope you intro the Christmas episode the same way.
Well, one of us in the parasocial friend group had to watch The People under the Stairs so we did last night. Can't describe how KJB friendly it is
If you're still looking for movies about religion, I'd recommend Wes Anderson's latest movie, The Phoenician Scheme.
I hate the concept of the "American cut" because why do we all have to be painted in the same broad strokes as the least refined of us; but also, never asking the average American to broaden their media horizons for a moment is how we get to our current media illiteracy crisis.
All the talk of "sublimated lesbianism" made me think of "Deep. Sublimated. Foliated. Lesbianism." Which of course then led to "LESBIANISM! SYNTHETIC LESBIANISM! LESBIANISM ALTERNATIVES! LESBIANISM SUBSTITUTES!"
Do you mind if I share than with my leftist Andor discussion group?
Nova, mispronouncing Appalachia grated.
I'm at 12:00 and she just pronounced it correctly. Will check back in to see if she mispronounces it later Update: Devon mispronounced it at like 40:38
Oh the second one is actually a real life story on how they end up rescuing one of the Goonerkids. & that little boy's name: Andrew Tate
Reanimate James Bond!
Glad to hear proper respect for never going into the cave.
That Brian Cox award is your best bit in ages, had me in stitches! I had to go back and re-listen twice 馃槄
I'm very excited to hear your reactions to Judgment at Nuremberg. Fantastic performances across the board, especially from Maximilian Schell.
The episode is going to be lit! I expect, no demand, at least one Star Trek jokes.
I want Devon to know that at least *I* laughed at their "cucking-cucqueen" joke.
its not a joke! Cuckquean is a real word, they just pronounced it wrong
I feel like this loses on the feminist front because the primary source of conflict is about a man. It felt like a lost opportunity for a real Inanna descent / change and transformation of form / skin-stripped and punished etc sort of thing. But instead it鈥檚 just about some fucking Paul.
I mean Inanna was about getting Dumuzzy or getting torn to shreds by her alter ego/sister after she's been a real wick tattle taking all the powers of the world for herself after seducing their dotard dad I did not mean to write Dumuzzy but it's too making. D chuckle
Would be interested to hear you cover a small budget trans vampire film called Bit (2019), I personally thought it had a bunch of writing issues but it had some charm. Also some intersection with Abi's Dracula's ex girlfriend
Goddamn, Devon. Judgement at Nuremberg is a hell of a pull. I look forward to it.
the most important piece of caving equipment, the spreader...
Pro Tip: Don't have an affair, especially not with your friends partner. That's just evil.
You don鈥檛 wanna be in the ossuary
Horses evolved in America before spreading into Eurasia, native population died out around 10k years ago - so not impossible they could be on a cave painting
I feel like purging your friend group antagonist from your friend group is just a rational thing to do. Throw them in a cave to be eaten by Gooners. It worked for me.
Caving rocks, actually, and can be an utterly sublime experience with feelings of danger that is actually completely safe if you pick the right (i.e., thoroughly explored) caves. Truly recommend going through at least one crawl if you can and also spending at least 60 seconds in complete darkness
^things the crawlers would say /j
November making a couple jokes about Final Destination is making me want you guys to do a Final Destination season. I know they don't say interesting things about masculinity but I do think there is something about philosophy and our relationship to death in those films.
I mean, the Appalachian Mountain Range *does* include Scotland so that's not totally inaccurate...
I was about to comment this!
In defense of Beth, Juno did just leave her to be eaten alive by the gooners. I don't think she can be blamed for being a bit upset
Abigail's insistence that they didn't scum sex and the city when they DID and very memorably gave it the same score as live and let die!!! 馃檭
My favourite line in The Descent is Holly offhandedly mentioning that she does these trips because she "ran out of things to [base jump] off in Galway." That must have taken her... ooohh, god... two whole weekends.
FUCK YESS! joining the wrong turn franchise as movies set in appalachia that were absolutely not filmed there
Hell yeah Spy Game with Stephen Dillane giving the best ever "bathing in the hater-ade" performance
"In the daylight community we call that ""fool's daylight""" is up there with "standing: cousin to walking" in the pantheon of Novemberisms that will stay with me forever, lol. EDIT: Pipe-husband buys his adultery jewellery at the same place as Elle McPherson in The Edge.
23:15 pipe traumatic stress disorder, if you will
haven't listened yet, dunno if they mention this, but one of the original ideas they had for the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot was going to be Lara Croft meets The Descent, just a straight up horror game. They scrapped this idea and just made a mostly standard third person stealthy/crafty/shooty game, but there is a bit where you fall down a cliff and into a pit of Descent troglodytes that are never explained or revisited. Very strange.
Now suspect that the reason modern Tomb Raider games are so violent is probably related to this movie. Proper Gap Year Rambo vibes.
Interestingly, that link to Tom's website has been busted for quite some time. I'm not actually sure how many weeks specifically.
It's a shame that the cave monsters are blind because we miss out on experiencing "beast vision."
There's a movie called Wolfen has some great beast vision and I saw it way too young and and it scared the hell out of me. Predates Predator for that. It's a bit of a cliche but I always like it.
"the cave which is a hole in the ground" be weird if it weren't tbh
The Goon Cave killed me OMG馃拃
Was really hoping for nosferatu alas perhaps next year
Wow. Kinda apprehensive here. I super don't like this movie, so I'm on tenterhooks wondering what you all think.
YES YES YES ABBY INTO GHOST BC or I'm music pilled and dumb
That was absolutely from Ad Aspera.
Kill James BOO!-nd
HAPPY HALLOWEEEEENNNNNNN KJB
Please and thank you
