S4E24: Sexy Beast
Kill James Bond Podcast continues it's completely unashamed fellating of Jonathan Glazer by watching his (feature-film) directorial debut, Sexy Beast. We've often seen, in the course of 'getting the gang together', our protagonist coming across one potential member who insists he's retired. He's out, he's happy, he's got a beautiful wife and likes his life. What if he really, really meant it?

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine

-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla
https://www.waterislifegaza.org/
-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

Sounding like Ian is continuing his role from Villain where he was shagging Richard Burton
Not the point, obviously, the movie needs to happen. But my first thought is if you need an excuse for why you can't do the job, and you just narrowly missed getting crushed by a boulder, maybe break one of your bones. If the boss comes to see you and you've got an arm or leg in a cast, and a giant boulder or crater in your pool, pretty self-explanatory
Abi doesn't remember the 2000s that well because, as we all know, she was born in 2007
Voted for you all. Sorry you didn't win it. *Do* think it would be very funny to keep introducing yourself as "award-losing podcast"
I've fallen behind and am on catch up but YES Lawrence Fox is James Fox's son and Edward is his uncle.
(Morbid) I found it interesting that the viscera left on the drinks cabinet after Teddy shoots Harry, looks more like rose petals on tattered silk. I dunno of they did that on purpose but I took that as a crime of passion - you fucked me so I fuck you, much like when H kills Don. Also is it me or are half the cast calling Gal "girl" as a sortof ultimate wolf wistle.
Voice training down to my chest voice (I am a trans man) made my Birmingham accent come back
Weirdly went back to listen to the Heat episode having downloaded this one and Heat to listen on a long flight. The poem gets a mention in the Heat episode too, at the 83 minute mark! Glad we finally got to hear it.
There are a lot of interesting reads on Don Logan, but a personally haunting one is that he comes across as a school bully. The intimidating and threatening nature where nothing you say gets to them was a terrible throwback to my school days. He has an unstoppable urge to torment and agitate, and watching this, it properly set me on edge; it's well cast and brilliantly played. As a motoring journalist, the Porsche read is a good one. Porsche, in the late 90s, was stumbling around trying to reinvent itself. They'd struggled to find success with the trans-axle series cars and were desperate to find a means of reinventing the 911 for the new age. It was a marque running out of time, and by the late 90s, the 993 series 911 was desperate for retirement, the last of the air-cooled old guard of Porsches clinging on. Potentially a parallel with Teddy, a gangster from a previous generation, going for one last job. Porsches through the 80s were also the choice of the city boy done good. if you'd made bank from banking, chances are you'd later find yourself wrapped around a telegraph pole in the remains of what was once your Stuttgart built sports car (if you did ok, you got a 924, decently, the 944, really well a 911 and very well indeed, a 911 turbo which was just a fast track to a major car accident). It carried on that affect of greed with a touch of nouveau riche to the 90s and unintentionally doubled down on it come the 00s as the Boxster and especially the Cayenne hit their stride.
Suggesting The Silent Partner (1978, Canadian film starring Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer & Susannah York) once again. It's in my top 5 heist films of all time. It really surprised me how sharp it was when I cracked into it a couple years ago.
I love this movie. I saw it 5 times in the cinemas in maybe three weekends. I took everyone I knew who would enjoy it to see and went back alone for my last viewing. I have owned it on VHS and DVD. I adore it. When November said she wanted to watch this next, I was beside myself with joy. This episode was a delight. Thank you for this gift.
The “why are you swearing I’m not swearing” drop alone forced me to rewatch the film not once but twice this week 🔥
Oh god do I love this movie and this discussion about it
The “why are you swearing I’m not swearing” drop alone forced me to rewatch the film not once but twice this week 🔥
SIXTY PERCENT? Why even bother with a vote then?! Just mail them the prize second class. Have the little party in private! I know so many of those there hated every moment of it.
help there's like five movies called White Noise and I don't know which one to watch
Just wanted to say absolute banger of an episode. Thanks legends 🤘
this entire time i thought the bit in the patreon thanks was just that someone set their name to variations of "i'm not reading that" and dev was playing along, suddenly learning the truth was like having a bomb dropped directly on my skull
Gay Speedo Heist Reported at Louvre.
I still reckon Dirty Dozen would be a good fit for robbery season. It's very technically not a heist, but it shares a lot of dna with heist movies (assembling the team, drop of a hat these guys will rock 'n roll, Weingro...)
A comfort movie of mine. Love every single character in it.
Do Indiana Jones movies count for Robbery Season?
I'll admit, when I watched it the mix of 'Straight Up And Down Mannerisms' + 'Utterly Profane Language' spoke a very specific sort of person to me as an Aussie, which made me immediately fucking nervous about the guy. SAS/SASR. A bag of profanity and callous cruelty, putting on the illusion of a human.
a) THIS is what Devon has been refusing to read out for the past year+ b) Devon knows what it means c) Devon pronouncing it ser-KAY d) my soul left my body
Oh, hey, loved your work in boston
hey i just realized LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM (1988) could count for religion season AND spooky season. it is thematically fairly (trans)misogynist but amanda donohoe is in some great outfits and also it's got an unbelievably young peter capaldi-hugh grant duo
"Ian McShane Will Fuck You Up!" would make a great t-shirt NGL
The hoopleheads would be dancing in the thoroughfare.
Have you thought about how to steal a million? Really wanna see November talk about Hepburn’s tiny car
I’ve been asking for that for years. They’re never doing it.
Suggesting one of our dinosaurs is missing again! DINOSAUR HEISTS ARE SPOOKY! A SOLID 10 IN CULTURAL INSENSITIVITY!
I thought you had already done sexy beast but that was trashfuture lol
For a spooky one, The Addams Family (1991) is a heist movie, though mostly from the perspective of the heistees.
... Does that make Fester the Waingro for the people running the heist?
Devon's red carpet anectode at the end, unironically proving that KJB has operatives EVERYWHERE
I thought the take about Teddy being homophobic was interesting. I just figured he was letting Harry screw him to get access to the vault for the heist. I think in another movie Teddy could have been a woman, and she would have been a classic femme fatale and very little of the story needs to change. Teddy's menace is how he sees through Gal, it's a threat that suggests emotional intelligence, reading people, often feminine coded traits. Particularly in contrast to the hyper masculine Don. I took the apparent disgust of Teddy not to be homophobic, just disgust at having to fuck a guy he finds unappealing for work. Which is something that is very rarely considered when a female character is used as a honey trap, but must still be gross and violating, even if it's done with consent. Probably a bit of bias though, Ian Mcshane is one of my favourite actors since Deadwood and even when he is playing a borderline diabolical criminal mastermind I can't help but think he's probably just misunderstood and that there's good in there somewhere.
If you’re looking for another girl heist movie, the first Gemma Arterton St Trinians movie fits the bill.
Would you please consider Kelly’s Heroes for heist season?
This is such a fun recomedation, probaly a good follow up if theres a really dark episode and use it as a pallet cleanser?
I have no idea where you would put it, but I’d be fascinated to see you guys watch Babylon 5: The Gathering. It’s a sci fi whodunit movie about a murder at the alien UN building, that’s actually a very obvious pilot episode for one of the best TV shows I’ve ever watched. It’s got a metric fuckton of Foreshadowing as a Literary Device, some minor religious themes in the form of “alien that may or may not be God”, and Mira Furlan as a genderweird alien spy/nun.
Great. Just great. First "Greatest Story Ever Told" isn't available, and now I find out "Sexy Beast" is also taken. What am I going to name my autobiography?
Greatest sexy beast story ever told?
Abigail probably counts as a spooky heist movie, if we're counting kidnapping as heisting. Wouldn't say there's a lot in there of themes to discuss but it's good, bloody fun.
I'll say I didn't notice November's voice changing, but I did re listen to some old episode and noticed how different it was back then.
All of the voice training coaches being toffs or (worse) American is why I haven’t bothered with it. There’s only one notable person who had my local accent and its Cher Lloyd before the singing coaches made her sound American which isn’t enough to practice based on.
I find that when you get to know people they sound like their gender to you when they speak.
I'm so bummed that KGB didn't win I was making fake names using different accounts almost every day honestly I'm disappointed in yall for not doing the same SMH shaking my head
cackled so loud i scared my beloved gay wife at "vriska serket did nothing wrong" in the patreon names, but then i informed them of why and they cackled with me.
I was about to say I know a real life transfemme communist who took the name Vriska that's not technically true. I know a transfemme communist IRL who is currently in a poly relationship with a transfemme communist named Vriska
This movie is engaging with the the classic patriarchal notion "Everything is about sex, except sex. Sex is about power." For the antagonistic character of this film, sex doesn't even seem to be something done for pleasure or love like it is for Gal and DeeDee. At the supposedly "crazy orgy", most of the people there aren't even having sex, they're just watching other people have sex. They're more getting off to the feeling of being in this place of power where you can watch other people have sex for you. Even Don talks exaggerates about it as a brag. Don tries to assist power over Aitch by saying he had sex with his wife, and Aitch retorts "Well I'm fucking you" when killing him. And then of course there is the reading of Don's abuse of Gal having underlying sexual tones. And we can see that this sort of power based sexuality is prone to incredible insecurity. Ted getting fucked by Harry is humiliating and degrading to him, and he goes through with the entire heist just to "fuck" him back. But even that's not enough, as he still goes and kills him later, in a way that makes Harry submissive to him and also exerts power over Gal through the intimidation. Additionally , he needs Gal to witness it, because this feeling needs to be reciprocated by other people, it can't just be you alone, because you lack the ability to feel confident on your own. The only way for these sorts of people to feel strong and secure is by dominating someone else. And then we see Gal. Unlike all these insecure and unhappy men in Britain, he is completely happy and content living in Spain, being in a happy and equal relationship wife, and having a healthy male friendship. He doesn't want to feel strong and dominant, he isn't insecure about his wife's past, he doesn't need to do crime to experience the rush of satisfaction. But tragically, the patriarchy still exists, and he is still going to be dragged back into its violence and it's desire for domination.
I don't think there is that much malice in the heist itself, or even the killing. Teddy kills Harry because Harry can put him in the frame for the heist. I feel like Teddy has Gal witness it partly for convenience, he's doing housekeeping and Gal is part of that and there's not a huge amount of time before Harry finds out what happened and then silencing him is probably impossible. Plus Gal is such a harmless looking bloke, him showing up on your doorstep, even alongside Teddy, in the middle of the night, doesn't suggest 'Imminent Murder'. I don't see Teddy as insecure at all though. I see him as that rare thing, a capable, fully self aware and self actualised monster. He lets Gal walk because he genuinely doesn't give a fuck about Don, because who would? Man's unstable, Teddy probably barely tolerated him as it is.
This movie is confronting the question "Fellas, is it gay to love your wife?"
James Fox is indeed Lawrence Fox's dad
The cringe I made when Abi asked the question 😬
So glad you're doing Croupier, with baby Clive Owen :) For those who noticed the scar covering DeeDee's arm - it's not makeup - Amanda Redman got burnt on most of her body when she was 18 months old, and that's the remnant scar.
I feel like November's ideal Dom would be an immaculately dressed beautiful East Germany drill sergeant/Statsi operator.
Love this movie so much. Saw it in the theater when it first came out and only knew Ben Kingsley as Gandhi, which added to how disquieting his performance was. It has been a while since I rewatched it so I may be confused, but I remembered it seemed implied that Jackie had been doing sex work and Don was a customer.
As of about 40 minutes into this podcast, I promise I'm not trying to be edgy or anything like that, but I genuinely think that killing Don Logan would be what I would do.
Ralph Fiennes in In Bruges would be a good performance to compare with this. Unfortunately that movie contains zero heists
It might qualify for religion season
Sexy Beast AND Croupier?!? I’m fucking levitating with joy!
Gah! Frustrated enough to return to this: Those styles of dominance ARE the ancient regime . They are why Brutus's Great Grand Heroic Gens Progenitor & his coterie of equestrians run Haughty Tarq off. All these motherfuckers exert their power through killing-violence but killing-violence second. First is through sexual transgresión & sexual violence, through dragging their shit-caked boots on holy ground. The reaction we have is because Harry did that too, he completely strode past any consent &c It would thus be a conservative film if the panjandrums of the English social order this is disgusted did not until very recently regard as a Potentate Mr Andrew "I can't sweat" It makes the economy of defilement through the pictures in the vault. I personally read it as in he is really out for good. He buys his exit from that world thrice: by killing his handler, by holding Teddys secret. By not taking the bait of the insult & then that is manifest in the earrings. You want to undermine his self won manumision: make the jewels a boon from Ted's world If anything I would say this movie has a certain socialist anarchist character where it says: in group out group, rich poor all the same when everyone keeps reproducing these hierarchies at each other Post Scriptum: that's how orgies were in Ancient Rome. Dull. Constrained by the games of gossip & rank & the trying to be a Vir-tuyos Faggot & a Chaste & Proper slattern. They were miserable affairs, those of the patricians.
Speaking of ancient Rome and sexual power, it's very interesting how Rome made the class power and sexual power thing very explicit. Only a man could be a Dom, and they could Dom anyone, so long as that person was either a woman or of a lower social standing than them. It was an assertion of your masculine power to do so, and a humiliation and degradation to have it done to you. And of course, when they couldn't feel power through sex, they had an expansionist empire they could feel power through violence with.
oh wow nova the new voice is extremely good
Voice training also made me posher too, it's all that practice of enunciation!
Turns out the Robin Fox acting family does includes James, Emilia, Freddie and Laurence Fox. They’re like a fucked Skarsgard
Turns out Skarsgard is an obscure kenning for the fox
"Counting or not counting gang violence?" asked Don
Don Logan: "Will you commit to this programme?"
as a pasty husky gay guy Ray Winstone is ..insanely hot in this role but also it's funny how many guys who love this movie don't get the gay shit the Ian McShane character is up to
How is that possible? It’s not even subtext with Teddy Bass. It’s bolded, underlined text.
