S4E19.5: Constantine
It's Girls Night! Rounding out our little impromptu run of two-host episodes comes the 2005 Keanu Reeves comic book adaptation Constantine. Can John Constantine, a man doomed to hell because of a suicide attempt, prevent the coming of the Antichrist? can Keanu deliver a line with any emotion in it? And what is Shia LeBeouf doing here?

FREE PALESTINE
Hey, Devon here. In our home, we talk a lot about how insane everything feels, and agonise constantly over what can be done to best help the Palestinians trapped in Gaza facing the full brunt of genocidal violence. My partner Rebecca has put together a list of four fundraisers you can contribute to- all of them are at work on the ground doing what they can.
-Palestinian Communist Youth Union, which is doing a food and water effort, and is part of the official communist party of Palestine
https://www.gofundme.com/f/to-preserve-whats-left-of-humanity-global-solidarity
-Water is Life, a water distribution project in North Gaza affiliated with an Indigenous American organization and the Freedom Flotilla
https://www.waterislifegaza.org/
-Vegetable Distribution Fund, which secured and delivers fresh veg, affiliated with Freedom Flotilla also

-Thamra, which distributes herb and veg seedlings, repairs and maintains water infrastructure, and distributes food made with replanted veg patches

Between this, Johnny Mnemonic, and Wanted's ergonomic keyboard November will soon have a full recording setup drop chain
It's funny what different people take from the same scenes. My cis arse completely forgot the demon/angel lesbian couple, but I distinctly remember thinking "fuck yeah, Djimon Hounsou! I love that guy!" EDIT: I strongly suspect that James Gunn's version of Constantine will at least reference the fact that he dated King Shark.
Sorry I'm late, catching up on old episodes - a couple of other comments have alluded to it, but I'll add my voice to say that the version of John Constantine in Legends of Tomorrow (the TV show) had all the stuff you complained about Keanu's portrayal lacking. Including the bisexuality. (I'd actually forgotten until I read a comment here that they imported the character & actor into Legends of Tomorrow from an actual Constantine show, but I never saw that one.)
My suggestion (if this isn't too late at this point) for Religion Season is The Borderlands (aka Final Prayer). The ending does come with a massive content warning, it's incredibly graphic and disturbing, but it's a British found footage horror movie that has a lot to say about faith and belief, most prominently with Christianity and Pagan beliefs. It's one of my favourite horror films
That Peter Stromare scene made me feel so funny as a teen--
Ok, I need to rewatch this expeditiously because this was my jam in high school but I have no recollection of dykery in the club in that one scene. Although I did end up in a t4t relationship with a butch angel so maybe my subconscious held on to it. Amazing episode, and if you’re still looking for Religious season ideas, you could always go with Exorcist (or if the “no first film in a series” rule still holds, the second one, which will be much less enjoyable for the three of you but much better material for all of us).
Honestly, Swinton and Stormare were basically in a different movie that happened to cut their scenes into this one. She almost sounded like her lines were written by someone else, someone better. Glad someone also noticed the hospital wrist tags.
Did we miss that Balthazar is the lead singer of Bush?
My suggestion for religion season is "Boy from Heaven", alternative title "The Cairo Conspiracy" or in the original "Walad Min Al Janna". It is a political thriller from 2022 that can be summarised as "Conclave at the al-Azhar University". I can't recommend it enough.
Yall should do The Martian because the whole plot happens because Rocket Fall Down!
If we’re doing religion movies then I want to suggest Tenshi no Tamago, genuinely super good. I know within Christian circles I’ve heard a lot of things about The Shack, specifically it both pleased and pissed off people.
Chiming in way too late with a note that I’d LOVE to see KJB take on a musical. I’ve seen Fiddler on the Roof and Prince of Egypt suggested, which would also be great but I’d like to put in a vote for the ridiculous and too-on-the-nose choice of Jesus Christ Superstar, with its many issues 😂
Event Horizon would be fun from a religion season standpoint, but I'm also submitting the Get Smart movie as a general show rec
Not religion themed but I’d really like to hear yall talk about castration movie, I saw it at a screening in manhattan and greatly enjoyed it. fair warning it’s very long and best enjoyed with at least one intermission
The Seventh Seal for Religion Season. ”Swordfish” (2002) for heist and for car season. Hugh Jackman as a 90’s hacker. Don Cheadle as a tough data crime FBI agent. Halle Berry as the femme fatale. And John Travolta in his best role between Pulp Fiction and The taking of Pelham 123 (?) which you should also watch.
Crazy to me that they miss Lost Angeles in the bit at 44:40 given that they reference a different China Miéville book 24 seconds earlier
Another suggestion for religion season: Heretic (2024). It's a bit on the horror side but less scary imagery than St Maude. Mostly social horror and unspoken tension. Two Mormon missionaries vs an atheist who *really* wants to give a poorly-researched TED talk, refuses to admit to ever being wrong, and is both charming and creepy.
Not sure if it's too explicit but my first thought for a recommendation was "Benedetta" if you want Paul Verhoeven flavor lesbian nuns
First Reformed is essential religion season viewing.
Maybe you could do The Green Knight for religion season - Celtic animism and Christianity meet, plus as anti-Bond of an action hero as you could imagine
I feel like you should do Yentl at least once. It is a non-Christian religion story and is also really easy to read the main character as a bisexual trans man. I don't know anything like this for trans women though.
Religion season but the religion is only Christianity and a bit of Judaism
Seriously there are like thousands of religions
Fun fact, Joanna isnt a genderbent John, she's his ancestor. She's the source of the "magickness" in the Constantine family line. She was in the original Sandman comic too
Did y'all see Much Ado About Nothing? His shirt's off which is interesting, but also Keanu is trying out an accent that is interesting for a different reason.
Just saw a preview for Gabby's Dollhouse and it is fking insane. So much to say about gender.
Watch Coolie, it’s a 1980’s Indian film about a labor organizer who beats up the rich with the power of Allah
Still hoping for 'The Craft' for religion season. I know I'm showing my age here but I was a 90s teen and since I'm having difficulty trying to fit 'Clueless' and '10 Things I Hate About You' into a theological context 'The Craft' is my best hope!
unfortunately not really in line with religion season, but if y'all ever get the chance you should check out The Wild Geese (1978). i dont remember if its a good movie, but it was an Interesting one. its a bunch of white mercenaries (including roger moore) on a mission to rescue a kidnapped african leader.
The Spear of Destiny. We remember this from Neon Genesis Evangelion and, I assume, other things.
For religion season: The Body with Antonio Banderas for religion thriller; The Prophecy (part one) if you wanna lean into like American 80's horror (Viggo Mortensen as The Devil!); and/or The Discovery of Heaven for drama.
Lemme expand on that a little bit: The Body deals with the question of 'what would be the consequences to Catholic religion and the Church and possible the whole world if the body of friend of the podcast Jesus Christ were found?'; The Prophecy is about a detective who gets involved in a battle between Angels; and The Discovery of Heaven was written by Jewish author Harry Mulisch and has The Angels work together to form a plan to get the Ten Commandments back to Heaven.
Would heaven versions of places just be places if there was infinite resources to fix things/maintain infrastructure/develop social services?
Is Sister Act a religious movie?
Not related to religion really but I need to hear the gals and theys takes on Castration Movie I
Hearing Abi and Nova’s lesbian reactions to Gabriel’s showdown outfit was quite jarring because my transmasc response was ‘if I had seen this aged 11 in 2005 I would have developed the fastest case of rapid onset gender dysphoria ever documented; tilda swinton invents tboy swag live on camera; HE’S LITERALLY WEARING A FUCKING BINDER WHAT THE FUCK’
As a queer woman, we thank Tilda for her service to both communities. 🥵😂
What does November mean at 44:19? Im hearing: "the kind of plainer (?) disruption is one of interaction and perception" Am I hearing that right? What does she mean by this? I mean i get the general gist of the whole bit about heaven earth and hell existing in the same place, but i dont understand this particular sentence. Its not that important, but my autistic brain can get hung up on these things. So if someone can explain it that would be nice. Thx in advance!
I think it's planar, as in relating to a plane - in this case of existence. So she's saying the three places are physically co-located but which things you're able to interact with and perceive change. She's also referencing the City and the City by China Miéville, which is a fantasy novel where two cities exist in the same physical space but don't interact.
Woooow, ok, I sign up to the patreon and in the first bonus episode I listen to you’re slagging off my beloved home city of Hull?!? I mean… you aren’t wrong. Hmm. I should really consider moving to Huaven.
Am I the "I not reading that"?
Do both versions of “Joan of Arc”. And “On The Silver Globe”.
Religious movie suggestion: Four Lions. Young Riz Ahmed. What could possibly go wrong.
Scouse Keanu Reeves: 'Yehh. No' really.'
I'd like to see how the gang reacts to the Anchorman movies from a feminist view. The first one's thesis can be entirely summarized by a single line by Danny Trejo, and the second one walks almost everything the first movie does back for the sake of a cash grab sequel from 2013.
Would love to hear your take on Kingdom of Heaven, the directors cut of course.
I know it's not quite fitting the current themes, but how in Hell (LA Version) have you not talked about the 2014 movie Predestination yet^^
Kingdom of Heaven would be an interesting film to review. I would like to hear critiques of Ridley Scott.
Dogma (1999) is a very cool and funny religion movie about a woman who is a lapsed Catholic who works in a family planning clinic who gets called on by the archangel Gabriel to go and rescue God. Some cool roles from Ben afleck and Matt Damon plus Jay and silent bob. I r8 it highly.
Dead as dead can beee My doctor tells me...
Soliciting movie suggestions are we? do Darby O'Gill and the Little People It probably says something about religion
1:05:06 to hear November call him Keanu Weaves
1:05:08 Keanu Weaves
i will again submit a cerebral hour kinda religious adjacent movie called bad lieutenant, with harvey keitel
After which they could check out Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans with Nic Cage. Then I’ll finally be able to find out whether it’s about being trans or 9/11.
Googled how Domino Harvey and saw a picture; googled how to become a bounty hunter in my state next. Here you need 3 yrs experience in law enforcement but in California it's like a two week course lol. You do need at least one million dollars of liability insurance coverage (in CA) to practice though. Probably worked for her because she came from a moneyed background.
The Golden Compass (2007) world be a fun episode I feel Also saw Between the Temples a while ago, that could be interesting... I don't know how I feel about it so another perspective would be cool
Loved this ep. I gotta suggest Prince of Egypt. I'd love to hear your takes on that, because hey made to be both commercially viable with kids and families but also that lens
Oh yeah there is a lot of ….studio backstory with that project (they wanted the depiction of god ‘s voice to be a shifting chorus of ages and gender and religious groups made a fuss, very Hail Caesar ) and really deserves to be better known
When I watched this in the theater, I was enjoying it until the twist, and then I couldn't take it seriously because it reminded me so much of Dogma.
It's been so very many years since I first saw this movie (enjoyed it as a generic movie, not as a Hellblazer movie) and I keep sending my friends messages like: "Have you seen Tilda Swinton in Constantine? Yes/no? Okay I'm sure you'll enjoy this then *attached still of Gabriel being Gabriel*"
It’s not a perfect movie but “Mother!” would be great for religion season. I like it, but everyone says it’s bad. I think it’s an interesting artifact of a time that has already been forgotten
"Everyone knows him and recognises him" and "The Devil would come to collect your soul himself" make a lot more sense in the context of the whole run of the comic book series, where our John is a constant bother to everyone he meets (and occasionally helps) as he is the most disaster of all bisexuals of all time, and cannot help but have Incredible Beef with Satan and Beelzebub, but also kind of is welcome to drink at Lucifer's jazz bar.
Religious season recommendation: I would be interested in what you make of the Kevin Smith movie Dogma. The religious themes are sort of similar to Constantine, but not quite.
Religious Movie Season: Wings of Desire. A movie about Angels that doesn't really talk about religion. NOT THE NICHOLAS CAGE remake. It's also, possibly, about being trans.
Religious-Season film I'd suggest especially for November would be Der Himmel über Berlin.
I second The Prophecy. Cristopher Walken plays the Angel Gabriel, and it’s wild.
I was going to recommend The Prophecy too.
I'd also suggest Tokyo Godfathers, a Japanese Christian movie about three homeless people who find a baby in a dumpster on Christmas Eve, which, as an atheist, I find annoyingly good.
Yes! Seconded! It is even a movie that is not about 9/11 which is always a good time in movies covered by KJB
Not necessarily a good movie but an interesting one to discuss, Agora as an atheist movie.
Swiss Army Man belongs firmly in religion season
in terms of films with somewhat negative attitudes on religion and Christianity, I’d actually be interested in a discussion on Carrie (1976)
Holy shit lesbians angels and demons vampire the masquerade lapas why doesn't this club exist in real life the world has fallen off since 2005
Alright hear me out; Ford Vs Ferrari is a deeply religious film but the religion is cars.
Religious season suggestion : The Prophecy. Viggo Mortensen, Elias Koteas, Christopher Walden, Amanda Plummer, Virginia Madsen.
For religion season I have two movies I’d like to offer for your consideration: The 1976 movie Al-risalah/the message, by Moustapha Akkad, which is technically very interesting with regards to ‘how do you depict the life of Mohammed when you’re not allowed to depict the prophet?’ And the second movie I would like to offer for your consideration is The Tale of Princess Kaguya by Isao Takahata in 2013 which deals with some very interesting Japanese-Buddhist themes and folklore.
Can you do Fiddler on the Roof?
November, you should definitely (if not do then at least) check out the 2017 estonian movie called November. It deals more with estonian paganism than christianity but it's a very stylish and odd movie.
I’ll open the biggest can of worms in the world and suggest Love Exposure. More Catholics!
My read on Gabriel being unable to punch Lucifer was totally different - I didn't get the vibe that it was him being able to stop them because God doesn't have their back anymore, but rather that God was like "that's not how the game is played" and was the one to restrict them.
This just sounds like a fun movie.
Fun fact - Balthazar was played by Gavin Rossdale lead singer of BUSH. Religious season suggestion - Stigmata. Random hairdresser in NYC starts becoming afflicted with the Stigmata. One of those so bad it's good movies. The entire movie looks like a 1999 music video. I am obsessed with every outfit in this movie.
Notoriously chaotic bisexuality representation found its way in
The rabbi's cat!
so i do have a religion season pitch that i would love to hear yall talk about bc it's the gayest hetero movie and the transest cisgender movie while also Very Much Being about religion. it's Yentl. Ms Streisand herself. might wanna have a jewish person on, honestly i would love to hear Mattie's opinions as a jewish trans woman. but as a genderqueer jewish lesbian that movie did. strange things to my brain as a child. it's nominally feminist and doing a critique of judaism from that lens, but also it is still SO weird about its female characters. also i think Devon might find young Mandy Patinkin (playing an absolute asshole beautifully btw) hot lmao.
Seconding this, Yentl blew me away when I first saw it.
I am struck by the notion that as the American empire continues to decline, one day, scenes filmed here will get hit by the yellow filter.
Devon isn't sick this week. Have you seen their fit? Devon is sick af every week
Re: Domino Harvey, I am once again calling for Tony Scott season, you've already started it with Enemy of the State
Semi-joke answer but also semi-serious answer for another religion season movie: Thor (2011)
They could follow their series rules of only doing the sequel there, since Dark World is so friggin lore and rules heavy. Abi dancing around talking about current Disney product would be a huge bonus
Spiders don't like tobacco smoke. They go berserk.
As long as we're suggesting obscure movies for religion season, how about that written, directed, and staring Marty Feldman classic In God We Trust (1980). Saw this first-run in a movie theater when I was--goodness, gracious--ten years old. Only things I remember are 1) the movie hates evangelical preachers, and 2) Richard Pryor is God.
Keanu Reeves can act. He's a good actor. He's also a subtle actor, not showy or grandiose, which can be easily mistaken for not acting. Also, I know I've seen this movie. I swear I've seen it, but I cannot remember a blooming fool thing about it. Listening to Abby/November, I was in a constant state of "Wait, what now? When did that happen? What's this about a cat?"
I remember that this was a basic cable staple, but it was really mangled by tv edits
Ah, the lance of longinus. I remember this from anime. re: Sandman, I first met my long-time partner when they were dressed as Desire at the kind of halloween party where people do goth comic book themed group costumes. Then as now they are an absolute smoke show but very very shy, so picture a diaphanous twink of indeterminate gender surrounded by women and trying to avoid looking directly at any of them while making conversation about Lorenz attractors. I fell in love on the spot.
They should have had Hussein as a guest, he could tell them all about Longinus and Cruel Angels.
'd suggest The Life Of Brian for the religious film and for a robbery film I'd suggest the 2008 film Stone of Destiny.
Views of several of the surviving pythons are . . . not aging well, so discussing their filmography might prove complicated. Having said that Life of Brian for religion season and Time Bandits for robbery season has a certain appeal.
Please do The Time Masters 1982 as a bonus (a French children's animation featuring implied cuckoldry and saving the day through weaponized self hatred).
CONSTANTINE HAS AN AFTER-CREDITS SCENE???
I feel like Ken Russell’s Lair of the White Worm would give you PLENTY to talk about vis a vis “Christian” ideals vs “pagan” ideals and also just generally being Wild. Alternatively, maybe: Jesus Christ Superstar?
omg yes lair of the white worm!!!
Some movies with religious themes: mother! (2017) Doubt Women Talking Secret Sunshine Dogma Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives The Master Black Narcissus Wings of Desire
Religious movie suggestion: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Heist movie suggestion: Star Trek IV: Voyage Home
What does God need with a starship?
Yall talking about Jason fondly made me take a chance on Beekeeper. I was hoping it'd be fun cheese but it was just mid. Not bad, not great. Miss this one of you continue on the Jason kick
If you want a really out there pick, Rogue One is a movie where The Force is notably: a) real and present b) not helpful c) except for when it is.
Oh I shouted this out a few eps ago but you should do Captain Fantastic for religion season! It’s got some Buddhist themes, and also basically the whole movie is about a family’s journey from Hippie(Orthodox) to Hippie (Reformed).
Canonical features of John Constantine not adapted for this film. 1) Looks like Sting. 2) From Liverpool 3) Bisexual (Chas' alleged chastity cage notwithstanding)
Hull is rad I will not take this slander on Yorkshire day of all days
I would love for you to review Jupiter Ascending. It's not a good film, but it is an audaciously ambitious film. It has the kind of juvenile wish fulfillment narrative that you would find scrawled in the notebook of a teenage girl, which kind of makes sense, given that it was written and directed by two recently-out trans women. Plus it has Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne in the most scene-chewingest role of his career.
Seconding, its like they put all their ideas for a new TV series into one movie that’s also REGENCY ROMANCE TROPES IN SPACE and also the one where they are just pointing to the audience goin wow it’s like the rich extract value from working people to keep themselves going does that SOUND like anything to you?
Do Sinners as a religious movie - a lot of folk traditions of the African Diaspora represented. Also, it whips.
Ghost in the shell has a lot of shintoism dna in it but it probably wouldnt be talked about in an episode because that movie is wildly transgender
Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut for religious season Swordfish for Heist Season Battlefield Earth as a 2 for 1
Movies that come to mind: Seventh Seal Stalker Hard to Be a God Hour of the Wolf Ugetsu Ikiru 2001 Dersu Uzala (Kurosawa) Walkabout Iphegenia The Killing of a Sacred Deer Pather Panchali Passion of Joan of Arc (silent) Platoon? Sanshiro Sugata Alexander Nevsky Evangelion? The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie? Of Gods and Men Hell House (2001 documentary) The Little Hours Gandhi The Burmese Harp Koyaanisqatsi The Garden of the Fitzi-Continis My Night at Maude’s (Ma Nuit Chez Maude) Deliverance The Last Temptation of Christ? Pandora’s Box (silent) The Wages of Fear? Ida The Funeral (1984) Behold a Pale Horse (1964, with Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn)
Or Inherit the Wind
a rare film that I have already watched fairly recently, so i can skip straight to dessert!
Signs. It's the most Evangelical Christian movie ever, as filtered through an Indian director and a Catholic actor. Please, it's so interesting.
See, Swing Away
Religious film suggestion: Sebastiane by Derek Jarman. Here's the IMDB summery to queerbait and kinkbait you: "Reassigned to a lowly outpost, a Roman guard's Christian beliefs clash with his gay commander's desire for closeness. Being tortured becomes pleasurable."
Siddhartha Uncle boonmee or holy mountain for religion season
Holy Mountain should be the closer for Religious Season
As far as the internet is concerned, anything other than long-term exposure to nicotine is fine for spiders. Spider unaffected.
Photography mentioned 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Please do end of days! Also RRR could be a good shout!
So no Devon
I did not expect to hear my name said by the girls so many times. I too forgot Shia was in this one.
November, Preacher was a 4 season AMC tv show, not a Amazon mini series
It only vaguely touches on religion in one spot but The Man From Earth is one of my favorite films. It's all basically one location and just a bunch of people talking, also it has Tony Todd (RIP king) swearing which is always a delight.
I just wanted to suggest Luis Buñuel’s Simon of the Desert (1965). I think it’s interesting as a religious (but also cultural) commentary. It features a fun lady-Satan and is also only 45 minutes long.
I really liked the Witch (stylized the VVitch) as a movie about religion/puritanism
would love to hear y'all's input on the taqwacores for religion season
So this movie got thrashed by the Comics Comunity at the time for not being Wizzard Sting, but also the Queer Comunity because Constantine is also a Bisexual Wizzard Sting. He had sex with King Shark (who's closer to the cartoon version in terms of intelligence but has vocabulary of the Movie King Shark, although voluntarily as revealed in his last scene.)
Comics* has a real bad history of dealing with Constantine’s sexuality in a good or consistent way but I did like that brief run where we get “John is canonically helpless against Bears who are taller then him” *the cartoons are better about it but the DC cartoons have always been better then the live action movies overall
It's so weird to hear people jokingly reference world of darkness, given that it's always felt like a goth relic of the 90's
But it's sooooo gooood.
Okay hear my out: I would say 1984's My Little Pony; Rescue at Midnight Castle (rereleased as My Little Pony; Firefly's Adventure) is a religion movie. It involves the Satan of ponies collecting and corrupting the MLPs for .. reasons? I can't imagine you actually doing it, but it absolutely informed my world as a very small child.
Movie idea I'm desperate for Abi to cover in particular: Tootsie.
Movie Ideas - Religion * Agora (2009) is a historical epic about the philosopher Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) and her fixation astronomy as Alexandira faces rising violence between the upstart Christian and established pagans. * Last Temptaion of Christ (1988, Scorsese & Schrader) is a fictionalized version of the story of Jesus where Schrader (mostly I think) tries to work through a version of the issues he brings up in “First Reformed”. * Priest (1994) is a movie about a young catholic priest who starts at a new church. It’s about a conflict between a libertine (drinking, non-chased) older priest and a younger orthodox priest. Movie deals with parental sexual abuse, secrecy of the confessional, and catholic teachings about homosexuality. Movie Ideas – Heist * D.E.B.S (2004) is a movie about a secret government spy agency that recruits agents based on their SAT scores and it’s battle against Lucy Diamond, a renown thief and super villain. Done in the aesthetic of Spy Kids, its a story about Amy, a top D.E.B.S agent, her boring FBI boyfriend, and her growing crush on . . . Lucy Diamond!? This may not be a perfect movie, but it’s a movie that thinks it would be great if you stopped working for the oppressive hetronormitive state, got into a queer relationship, and went off to do super villain stuff.
D.E.B.S. is too good for this world, but I'm not sure it has enough to say about masculinity. It's simply too gay!
Hey, I don't know if there's any actors too big to review in it or if it'd be too scary, BUT the horror movies "The Nun" and "The Nun II" rock IMPOSSIBLY for religious themes and hammy vibes. Also, there's a pretty dynamic female lead for both of them! (It is part of the larger "Conjuring" universe, but "The Nun" movies are sorta prequel stand-alones.)
The way I be deporting these half-breed demons...ooh Chile. You can't be talking like that John Constantine.
If you want a "comic accurate" version of Constantine, check out anything with Matt Ryan. He's been in a lot of the animated movies and the Constantine tv show. He basically rewrites reality twice bc all the heroes lose.
The exact comment I was looking for! How can we talk about Constantine and not mention Matt Ryan's portrayal! It's not 100% accurate, but much closer to "comic accurate" imo.
Hull is nice actually
Yeahhhhh, Tilda Swinton in this movie turned me non-binary!
If you're still looking for religion season nominees I'd suggest the surprisingly star studded Dogma (1999)? Watch it for the quality Alan Rickman performance if nothing else.
You could do the Green Knight, lots of stuff in there about Christianity butting up against older practices
That finale wouldve been real awkward if John instead had prostate cancer
Did you ever do an episode on Benedetta (2021)?
If you are still looking for movies with some relevance for discussion religion, I would recommend both versions of *Hard to be a God*. Or *Der Himmel über Berlin* and/or its remake *City of Angels*.
Dogma, not because it would be good, but because I think y'alls analysis of it could be interesting.
One vote for Holy Mountain for religion season pretty please 🙏
Would My Dinner With Andre count as a religious movie, by the metric that Andre seems to be in at least two cults?
Please please please consider doing Brassed Off (with a disturbingly young Ewan McGregor) which can be described as "Fuck Thatcher: The Movie", and also has a lot to say about class and masculinity and all that good stuff <3 It also has some extraordinarily powerful performances which I'm sure Abi will be able to give us #ActingHour on
CALVARY! Dear god Calvary. You want a religious movie? You watch Calvary. I will warn you, it's a very Irish movie so I don't know if it will translate as well for people who aren't from here, but the cast is stacked.
Saw Exhuma recently. Great Korean movie about like shamans and geomancers facing horrors beyond human comprehension. Definately falls under Religion Season. I also said Truman Show before, which isn't a "religion" movie but is pretty strongly allegorical. Also, have a great fondness for Hellblazer the comic. As blasphemous as it may be to make him American for the movie, it's nothing compared to the godawful caricature he's been reduced to in the comics now.
Truman Show is a fascinatingly Satanic/Luciferian movie. It also has scenes that were filmed on the roads/bridges of my small town. As someone raised extremely religiously and lied to and kept sheltered for all his childhood, that movie was basically designed as a laser blast for me.
Constantine 2 is happening! https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1071873/
There's also a couple of off brand Contantines in the Doom Patrol series
Morrison actually had to create the Willoughby Kipling character bc DC wouldn't let him use Actual JohnCon in his Doom Patrol series! Because he was being too weird for the planned tone of Hellblazer at the time
If you want to watch a Paul Hogan film for religion season then Almost an Angel exists. If you want to watch an interestingly batshit insane movie for religion season then Holy Mountain exists, although content warning for trans-coded people being portrayed as grotesque, child prostitution, almost-but-not-quite bestiality porn, and all-round general SCUM-maxing.
The whole of the USA is hell in this world. The UK is like a mini hell/purgatory
Religion Season could be extended with the 'The Prophecy': a horror/fantasy movie in which the bad guy is Christopher Walken as the Archangel Gabriel, which is a lot of fun to see.
Love this movie
50:10 Abby would have been a great Desire.
for the life of me can't remember why, but I was obsessed with this movie in high school. and it's still the most beautifully animated angel wings I've ever seen anyone do
This movie could and should have been MUCH more queer, because John Constantine is canonically bi and really gets around. I'm pretty sure he has done it with both a human-shark hybrid and the embodiment of the city of Los Angeles. There's a lot of interesting gender and sexuality stuff going on with his character.
Also if you’re still wanting more Religion Season then it feels like you’d really be leaving money on the table to not do First Reformed
Some would say a flat cap IS a chastity cage, in a way...
Keanu looking remarkably like Thomas Jane in the episode art.
As more of a linen suit than bondage trousers kind of guy, I might be more comfortable in hell.
The best duo dynamic really is November and any other host. She is so good
I'm now thinking that doing The Exorcist and The Exorcist 3 for Religion Season would be a really good idea. They're both thoroughly Catholic movies, and The Exorcist 3 is an underrated gem.
YES!
Would love to see Monkey Man for religion season
Yes! Oh my god I’ve wanted them to do monkey man for so long, it would 100% fit the theme. And that is a movie that is not about 911
One day I'd like to see an exorcism scene where the priest comes in and starts chanting in Latin and the demon says "it's ok I speak English".
Tilda Swinton wearing a suit was my wife's sapphic awakening. Or, one of a few, including the Captain cat lady from Treasure planet and Jodie Foster and Holly Hunter's voice Funny that you mentioned Preacher, I was raised in the American deep south in a sect that could be fairly described as a cult, by abusive parents who wanted me to become a celibate itinerant preacher, and I essentially found the courage / ability to leave because of a girl, and I cannot tell you just how powerful the character of Jesse Custer was at that point in my life. He was to me as the John Wayne figure was to him in the comics. Also kind of funny fact, Jesse Custer has canonically read Germaine Greer because he was a preacher stuck in a small town and read everything in the library.
i refuse to watch this film due to its refusal to cast a scouser to play the most scouse man alive or dead john constantine. i mean he's not even blond either.
I feel like the odds are good you’re already familiar but if you like “earth as battleground between heaven and earth” then the World of Darkness ttrpgs are probably right up your street
Oh there we go, White Wolf mentioned
Can I suggest a follow-up of John Carpenter's Vampires if you want to watch this film for a second time, but with James Woods playing James Woods rather than Keanu Reeves playing Keanu Reeves.
But it has James Woods. Who is a Gross Dude.
Also, continuing religion season - The Infidel with Omid Djalili is a fun film.
Heaven LA is either rent controlled or rental co-ops.
Y'know, if The Mummy isn't on your Halloween episode list you could probably make a decent argument for it being a heist movie >.>
It's also a religion movie at its core - the main villain is a priest consumed by lust, after all.
If you're continuing the religion bonus series you should check out the 2016 Korean movie The Wailing.
If you’re going to keep doing religion season, I’d be interested in you all watching Fiddler on the Roof and God on Trial. Fiddler is kinda more about tradition than religion (I wonder if the film says that at any point…) and God on Trial is… depressing, but potentially interesting given *the world*
Having Keanu say LAD every like 4 minutes would turn this into a comedy, it would send me, corpse me... I. NEEEEEEEEED. IT.
Most of the time, KJB watched movies I've never heard of, but every now and then you three talk about one of my favourite movies of all time. I know that the Tilda Swinton playing a man meme has been kicked to death by Dr Strange, but her playing Gabriel *was* a transgressive act to me when I saw this movie at the age of seven.
Yeesssssss this movie fucking rocks
