Choice, Consequence, and the "Bad End"

So, how does everyone feel about bad ends in an RPG? Personally, I’m not a huge fan. There is something about feeling like I’m being punished for my choices, even if those choices were, admittedly, a bit questionable, that just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. That feeling honestly sucks.

Despite that, I know that for a role-playing game to really work, your choices have to carry weight. If every path leads to the same happy place regardless of what you do, the stakes just aren't there.

Because of that, I’m currently writing and implementing a supposed end for the story. My goal is to create something that feels earned and impactful without making the reader feel disappointed or like they are simply being penalized for playing the game. I want it to be a conclusion that leaves you satisfied with the narrative arc, even if things didn't go exactly as planned.

What’s your take?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this:

  • Do you actually enjoy seeing your character face the music and get punished for bad decisions?

  • Do you prefer "bad ends" that feel more like a tragic, bittersweet movie rather than a "Game Over" screen?

  • Are there any specific games that handled a "bad" ending so well you weren't even mad?

Let me know in the comments!
