September Bonus: Wellness Tiktok Cooked Mike's Brain

Mike and Aubrey descend into madness while fact-checking wellness TikToks. It's probably because of the Large Hadron Collider.

You can play the episode directly through Patreon or use our RSS feed to add it to your podcast app. Here are the instructions from Patreon.

I love these kinds of episodes. Please feel free to put in as little effort as you want and don't think we need research-heavy episodes. We think y'all are hilarious no matter what you talk about.

i had a real tiktok addiction from like 22-28 y/o and i’d spend hours on tiktok, just angry and disgusted while whole days passed by. i’d try to find a video i watched through my watch history and id see i watched thousand of videos. it’s scary just how much your brain actually turns off. every time i felt an emotion i’d go on tiktok and turn it off. i got off it earlier this spring and it improved my life so much, but i still get pangs go on it

I’ve listened to this episode a few times and EVERY time at the part where they are talking about not drinking water too fast and how it relates to urinary urgency and Mike bewilderedly says, “I guess is like a problem when you have to pee?” I SHOUT “YES!! ALL THE DAMN TIME LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!” 🤣 I hate being a woman with a pelvic floor problem lol And, my pelvic floor therapist did tell me to sip rather than gulp, so I can vouch for that

The content in different languages might be from your neighbors or friends. I know I have a lot of Turkish neighbors and I sometimes get Turkish adds. I also sometimes get adds in other languages, just by standing next to people from that country

I deleted the Tiktok app from My phone because I can't trust myself with it (my screen time is scary). I have never seen ANY of these types of videos. CERN and the Harp thing for studying Northern lights etc... People legit believe they are 'creating climate change' intentionally. It's wiiiild. Side story: when I worked in gold exploration, we were drilling in a project near a town. There was a guy who called everyday telling us that our drills were ruining the health of him and his partner and they could feel the vibrations. They couldn't sleep, they were getting headaches every day, etc. The two diamond drills were on the other side of the lake from the town. Drilling little cores of rock just doesn't create that kind of vibration. We were always super nice to him, we're sorry you're not feeling well, thank you for calling, I'll pass on the message, the drills are moving further away. He believed it so fully, there was no point in arguing, so we just heard him out. I think a lot of people are looking for the big external thing to explain whatever they need explained.

Can we talk about how Pretty Privilege—or simply outright privilege—allows people to get paid for spouting this nonsense? If a rando on public transit said aloud, unsolicited “they turned off the Hadron Collider and my door healed itself—have you had the normal amount of periods and pregnancies since June 29th?” it would spawn insensitive 1000 TikToks with captions like “loud mouth psycho ruins commute”.

B
Boolckin · September 30, 2026

While I can understand and really appreciate the fun being had here by the podcast hosts and by its listeners (including me), I want to point out that it is a tiny bit jarring to hear a journalist dismiss a huge media platform so wholeheartedly. Yes, Tiktok is full of slop and brainrot, but it is also one of the only sources of news and information for many many people. I wouldn't bet on the reading crowd to grow exponentially in the near future, so if your job is to share truth with as many people as possible, it's a bit of a strange attitude to have.

The AI aside is one of the reasons I'll probably never use it for anything I don't plan to immediately throw away. There's the thing I'm best at, that's my livelihood, that I love doing more than anything else in the world. You want to take that away from me, give it to a plagiarism robot, and expect me to fix its work instead, which I don't understand as well because didn't get to write it. Or worse you don't want me to fix it, and you're ok with just putting shit out into the world.

K

I always assumed content creators used their car as a quiet place and to change things up. Recently a friend claimed its so they can claim their car as a business expense. Would be interested if anyone can confirm one way or another.

N
Natalie · September 29, 2026

That certainly sounds like the kind of TikTokTax advice that goes around. But I’ll note it’s not *accurate* tax advice - the amount of business use you can claim is determined by mileage, not time spent in the car.

My algorithm interests me. I’ll notice it all drifting to one kind of content and I’ll try to get out of it (the other day it became ONLY tik toks about Buffy and DCC and I love those things but cmon) and sometimes I’m successful but not always. I think it also throws in like…test toks occasionally that are obviously not something I’d like but they are just checking? Like I got one from the white house account the other day. Or teenagers doing or saying…anything. Or Christian stuff. And it tends to get weirder as it gets later. I’m not sure that’s me—I think it may be something the algorithm intentionally does? Like all the ads start being AI slop at 2am. Though I’m not sure why.

Who is the person narrating the tiktok video about CERN? I don't have tiktok and had never heard of this conspiracy theory whatsoever but istg I know that voice. Make of it what you will but 20+ years ago in my physiology class we did an experiment with sipping vs gulping water. We had 4 students with same amount of water each but they drank it over differing amounts of time - I can't remember what we actually did but let's say one person drank it over an hour, one 45 mins, 30 mins and then 15 mins. It made an impression on me because it was significant the difference in urine output. I mean, sure, there are probably a lot of variables not being taken into account but I think he did ask only students that have had no caffeine that morning so there's one. Maybe there is some other explanation but that was the physiology lesson he was teaching that your body will absorb more water when sipped rather than gulped. Love your podcast!!

I tried TikTok one time and it made my adhd brain insanely unhappy. It feels like when I have a counter that’s full of crap piled up on it. My brain can’t process the mess. TikTok feels like this endless mess of talking and visuals. Also, the constant asmr makes me want to puke. My kid loves asmr videos and they make me feel so ill. Last night he showed me a YouTube short of someone cutting up endless kinetic sand things while talking about something completely differnt and I wanted to chuck the iPad out the window 😆

P
Plate · September 28, 2026

MIKE you missed the best CERN conspiracy theory! Apparently in 2015 a small animal (think mouse/squirrel) got into the collider and caused a short. The theory is that the short catapulted us into an alternative (much worse) timeline which explains Trump, Covid, and everything else that's gone wrong since 2015. Do I believe it? No! This is my pet conspiracy theory that I keep around like a rock with googly eyes that you painted in kindergarten and look fondly on occasionally? Absolutely yes.

There was a comment after the excerpt from Mel Robbins' podcast questioning whether or not it was legal to post something you don't have the rights to, since the clip came from a TikTok account not affiliated with Robbins. As a chemist, I want to add that benzene doesn't absorb particularly well through the skin, so while you certainly don't want any exposure, rubbing some on your skin is very different than hotboxing it in a car. Additionally, some higher ups at Valisure applied for a patent for a stabilizing benzoyl peroxide. They seemingly did this report for the purpose of manufacturing demand for their product.

It’s true, we do live differently in very hot places. I live in Palm Springs and often donate canned food to both animals and people. I make sure to never leave any of the canned foods in my car, because of how hot cars get here. In fact, I leave nothing in my car. At the temperatures we see, it’s just easier to avoid the risks of it. Melting, exploding, spoiling, etc. are just too likely of outcomes.

I live in Southern AZ. A friend of mine genuinely baked chocolate chip cookies in his car one day in the summer. (Soft-baked, but it still proved the theory!)

T

Seriously, though, how is it that "everyone is saying" that if you want an audience on political / social matters you HAVE to become a Tiktoker (Ticker? Tocker? Fuck it, anyway) and that all the other platforms are irrelevant now, when it seems implausible that anyone can use Tiktok for anything serious? What do you think of "Dead TikTok theory, which is that at least 90% of the "engagement" on TikTok is generated by a swarm of Tiktok listening bots?

T

NOTICE: in the future the Tiktok creators shall be known as "Tickers" and the viewers shall be known as "Tockers"

I'm in the thick of early first trimester nausea right now and keep getting reels and tiktoks for remedies and one was the woody lady who no joke, recommended eating the most disgusting things for morning sickness. Like ox bile, straight vinegar, kefir, various stinky things that are the worst when you're pregnant and can smell everything. I felt sick just watching it, wondered if she was trolling.

Coming here as an elder millennial who loves TikTok. It really doesn’t feel like flipping channels-it feels like an algorithm that truly starts to understand my niche interests. Needlepoint, speaking Irish, bravo. Thank you!

My theory is that TikTok works great for SOME kind of neurodivergence—just not my kind 😅 I haaaate the sounds, the speed, the way people are staring into the camera and talking…

N
Natalie · September 28, 2026

Uuuuugh, just listening to all the little clips flying by made me so edgy and cranky. Sometimes my daughter will watch a bunch of promos on PBS Kids - they’re all promos for PBS Kids shows, so the content itself isn’t terrible, but listening to a reel of commercials enrages me in a similar way. (That said, the “my phone is in my hand, I’m an adult and I like you” guy is totally correct)

W

Mike, I have been a long-time listener of both MP and IBCK. I am genuinely a huge fan. I have never commented on your pronunciations, and I always think it’s silly when people get mad at you. I have hit my limit. Did you just say an FAQ section is “FACK”???

This is a little thing from the first CERN tik tok, but I can't stand the "have you noticed any symptoms" tactic. Does anyone else remember a few years ago where everyone and their dog suddenly had DID, even though it's an incredibly rare disorder that's largely linked to extreme trauma? That engagement technique is the reason why. It's the same thing as "webmd says I have cancer." Almost anyone can have one symptom of almost anything

CeraVae segment: My brain immediately went to the IDLH of benzene and tried to determine how benzoyl peroxide broke down into benzene while sitting in your bathroom. It is weird, but freezing bread makes it easier to digest when you're sensitive to gluten! I found that out because I'm broke so I rely on toogoodtogo a lot for food, which means I freeze a ton of bread, pastries and sandwiches. After freezing and 5 min in the oven, they never hurt my stomach. Huge win!

S
SorayB · September 28, 2026

Guys I think that the garlic and olive oil left for a month carries a high risk of giving you botulism.. which can kill you. So if someone doesn't check this and just does it to try it this AI slop could be super dangerous.

N
Natalie · September 28, 2026

It is definitely one of the higher-risk foods for botulism! Which luckily isn’t super common, but still. The bacteria that ultimately causes botulism creates spores, which are ubiquitous in soil and can survive dormant through all kinds of weather extremes. The don’t thrive until they’re in an anaerobic (no oxygen) environment. Hence why certain kinds of preserved foods like garlic in oil or improperly prepared canned goods are high risk.

J

I don't have TT but I am horrified at how I got sucked into those posts just with the audio. I wanted more! Part of me was like maybe I am gulping water. Is my period cycle different? It was so easy to just follow the suggestion to think about it and want more. Absolutely terrifying.

H

The best part of the CERN conspiracy theory is the following: Even when the LHC is not being upgraded of rebuilt, it regularly shuts down every year because it needs so much electricity that it can only afford to run when the energy prices in France are low (which happens on a regular, seasonal cycle). So all this "CERN shut off" nonsense they claim is happening now should have occurred every single year.

M
Margaret Marsh · September 28, 2026

Most terrifying episode ever, I’m not on ticktock so totally unprepared for the horror! So much worse than I imagined.

M
Maja Bäckvall · September 28, 2026

Just learning that my habit of freezing bread and toasting it to heat it up wasn't because I lived on my own and didn't own a microwave. I was hacking my gut biome or something. Yet I remain fat 🤔

L
Lorien Leonard · September 28, 2026

Hm, I blame CERN.

C
Charlotte · September 28, 2026

Ok, and sorry, but "If you don't know what a CERN is, it's the world's largest LHC" just gave me near-terminal psychic damage. How can anyone be so clueless about a thing they're talking about to an audience of 1000s. 😭 (I spent two weeks working at CERN during my PhD, but in the theoretical physics section. It's like a very nerdy (complimentary) industrial site with an honestly great cafeteria.)

The description of tiktok of being just like flipping through channels and never finding anything to watch reads so true to me. Jinxedstef · September 28, 2026

There *might* be something to not holding your breath before speaking: holding your breath creates pressure on your vocal folds and then when you speak, there's is a high probability that more air than necessary goes through through and this creates a breathy voice which we associate with vulnerable, anxious, low confidence etc. This breathy voice could affect your listeners but it also affects yourself: so hearing yourself you might think that you're anxious because you hear a breathy voice and possibly feel a little breathless.

C
Chantelle · September 28, 2026

I've not got to the research section but I'm already suspicious of Mike's claims of "vague research". I don't think he's capable of what most people would define as shallow research.

L
Louise Ferreira · September 28, 2026

Ok but speaking of CERN, this is my favourite conspiracy theory: apparently a weasel got stuck in the LHC in 2016 (this part might very well be true, I refuse to Google it), accidentally shifted us to a different timeline, and that's why everything's been extra fucked since. This episode is also a great demonstration of why I will watch tiktoks people send me but never actually scroll on there myself.
