April Bonus: Aubrey Explains "Vanderpump Rules"
By popular request, we're spending some quality time with some quality nonsense. This month, Aubrey walks Mike through the trash and magic of a beloved and long-running reality show.
Apologies for Aubrey's audio this episode! We had some technical issues and used a backup recording, so things sound a little tinnier this episode.
Video clips!
Vanderpump Rules: Lala and James Make Music Together Again...
Go check out Aubrey's reality TV sommelier, Rebecca Eisenberg, at The Practical Kitchen, and preorder her cookbook!
You can play the episode directly through Patreon or use our RSS feed to add it to your podcast app. Here are the instructions from Patreon.
See you next month!

I love that Michael had to hear snippets of both “Good as Gold” and “Let’s Touch in Public.”
People at work have been trying to get me to watch for YEARS. Nope. Aubrey tells Michael all about it? Sign me up! (And I gotta be honest, I’m hooked lol)
Good as Gold views have increased by 50% since this was recorded 😂 Coincidence??
Any methodology queens wanna do the math on that one?
I know I'm the only person but as a VPR watcher from the beginning I think it was done purposely for another season 😅
I have never seen this show, but seem to know everything about it from what I’ve picked up from other podcasts. This is my absolute favorite summary!! You guys are the best
Next up: Summer House! Also genuinely shocked where was no mention of Ariana going on to become our Love Island USA queen!
Oh my god, this was truly so compelling that I had to stop listening 7 minutes in and go watch the show. What absolute insanity, I love it
I’ll be honest, I thought Vanderpump Rules was a bunch of Sapphic body builders hangin out on the beach
I truly don’t know if the tom Sandoval song is a Michael Jackson cover/parody or an original song
Someone send help… I’m on my…8th relisten?!
Patiently waitting for anything in May!! Must be big research going on!! Exciting
I was literally just saying to someone that I needed someone to do a Scandoval recap for me and Aubrey explaining it was EXACTLY who I’d want to break the news to me lol
I have to tell y'all these are some of my favorite of your patreon episodes. Never feel like you have to do research for us. Y'all are just funny as fuck and enjoyable to listen to when you talk about ANYTHING. ❤️❤️❤️
Incredible. This is the best day ever. Thank you for this gift during my birthday month 🙏🏽
But what did Mike think of the salmon?
This is random but I think you guys could do a killer Wim Hof episode and I’d eat that up
There’s a good one on “Behind the Bastards”.
Well this is gonna be a wild ride ....I have no idea what this is about....less than Michael e en
Also on the subject of rat king reality shows, the people on survivor do seem to have the outlook that being on survivor has made them better people (particularly on this current season, where they’re all veterans), not that necessarily believe that, and I feel like physically it cannot be healthy, but just an interesting thought
I love the term “rat king reality shows”, they’re my favorite type of show, I only know who Tom Sandoval is because of traitors 🤣
Hi, not relevant, but THERES A NEW RICHARD SIMMONS DOCUMENTARY.
The only two podcasts I support on Patreon are Maintenance Phase and Watch Wha Crappens… thank you for merging my two worlds🩷
Please break down the Summer House scandal.
Thank you very much now I am watching vanderpump rule for the first time… Help! Haha
Do you think the name is a play on Cider house Rules? I don’t know why but that’s the first thing that came to my mind. There’s no natural tie-in, just the cadence of the names. 🤷♀️
I’m going to have Good as Gold in my head all week now and I *just* got it out a month ago
Thank you,Aubrey, for watching, so we don’t have to. I am both fascinated by, and have absolutely no interest in, ever watching it
I do not get this episode at all. Never have I watched any reality shows. Now I never willl.😄
Can you do this for every reality TV show ever? Thank youuuuu
You guys have no idea what an absolute gift this episode is. I have listened to it three times. It’s like a warm blanket.
Sorry, I’ve loved reality TV since Laguna Beach and I will defend its value. Aubrey, please pick up Summer House next
This makes me unreasonably happy
Ngl, was NOT expecting a Try Guys shout out this episode!!
this literally made me join the patreon 🫣
Looked up Good as Gold and found that there's a screamo version that is, ultimately, better than the original and should not be ignored

omfg mike The Boyfriend is soooo goooood
“Feet to the ground swingin..?”
I’ve watched so much VPR. I dropped off on later seasons. If you have Peacock, and have not done so yet, watch the Secrets Revealed episode following Season 1. The producers and show crew are all so baffled by the cast. Some highlights. 1. The crew was largely the same as the Real Housewives shows. They were absolutely not prepared to go from filming in palatial mansions to filming in the crappy, tiny apartments of the cast. 2. It’s a producer or camera guy that break up the infamous sweaters-off parking lot fight where Sandoval does some pre-fight push-ups. 3. Filming had wrapped when Stassi is told about Jax’s cocktail waitress affair. They had to grab whatever handful of crew was available from RHoBH to go film.
Also, the producers having to draw a web chart of pre-existing relationships.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but Spotify is showing me ads for Rachel Hollis’ audiobooks with the tag “Featured on ‘Maintenance Phase’!” I can’t share pics here but it’s kind of sad and also funny? I’ve noticed one for IBCK too.
Yeah same, I think it's hilarious
I have listened to this episode so many times… mostly just to hear “but babe… bulldozers”… I might do a rewatch of the whole show now 😆
I really was not prepared for charles mcmansion's lyrics
Best episode ever!!!
The only think more enjoyable than watching Vanderpump rules is listening to my favourite podcasters recap it. This episode was truly engineered in a lab just for me ❤️
I need so much more of this! It gets me through a bad day. Can you guys just go through every reality tv show and do this!? It’s better than the shows themselves.
This was one of my FAVORITE bonus episodes! Please consider this my vote for future episodes where Aubrey explains reality TV and Mike reacts!
Hey, so.. yall think you could bring back the bah-mu shirts?
https://www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/21506728-bamu?store_id=1196791
Someone early in the comments dropped Emotionally Online's Pumpcast. I have since listened to this rewatch podcast and these ladies are hysterical. VPR fans, I highly recommend!
Do Summer House next!!!!
Tom Sandoval is not attractive anymore his plastic surgery looks cringe.
Okay but just started The Boyfriend and it's good???
Was this the episode that finally pushed me to become a patreon? Absolutely 😂. Listening to Mike be incredulous about pop culture is fantastic.
This was a dream listen. One of my favorite podcasts talking about my favorite reality show.
I would listen to a whole "Aubrey debriefs reality tv (with Mike, who hasn't watched it, and I haven't either)" podcast
Is it weird I joined to hear this one?
he’s a fucking BATTERED WIFE
Summer house next!
YES! SOMETHING STUPID! Love y'all.
In that first episode of Tom Sandoval on The Traitors, at least four or five other contestants recognized him and there’s an overheard whisper of someone saying, “I do NOT want to talk to him.”
So thrilled for this episode! I started binging VPR while recovering from my C-section. It's truly wild. I started watching The Valley recently but skipped the first two seasons, as I had enough of Jax watching VPR
For the love of Snackwell's cookies Mike, please stop saying psychotic when what you mean is outlandish or offensive.
Thank you for this episode. Made my day sick in bed more entertaining. ☺️
Reality show recaps better become a regular part of the Patreon feed here! That was everything I didn’t know I needed.
Sunken coats. You put so much money in it that it sinks.
Thank you for explaining this series that is always heard of and didn't even know the origin of the title. Vanderpump is a real last name? It sounds made up (because of "pump"). I thought it was inspired by high-heeled shoes.
Ok my two year old is a BIG fan of Good As Gold 😅
You should play them "Hair Do" by Richard Simmons, lol. To my ear, I listened to the clip of "Good As Gold" and immediately heard, "...get something cute, get something girly" 🤣
This made me so happy
This brought me so much joy 😂
I cannot figure out how to listen to the bonus content. I joined, but when I go to the podcast on my phone, I'm told I have to pay. Is it a username/email issue? Or? No clue what to try next.
I’m no expert and about to be offline for a few weeks but wanted to help. by try copying the RSS feed itself into your podcast app on your phone as an alternative This is what helped me when I signed up, I found it at the bottom of the episode description “You can play the episode directly through Patreon or use our RSS feed to add it to your podcast app. Here are the instructions from Patreon.” The last sentence was a link, so maybe googling the keywords will help? Good luck!
Fun fact...my brother in law lives next door to Tom and Ariana's house
Does he have any tea?
Beautiful recap, now let’s get into the hetero hell of The Valley
I just started watching that! I skipped the first couple of seasons because I wanted to avoid Jax
As someone who has never watched - this was so important to me 😂😂😂
This is so deeply important to me
I have just remembered Stassi was on a very strange reality tv show before this… Queen Bees and it was hosted by Yoanna from ANTM… wild
She was also on The Amazing Race with her family as a teenager!
From the moment Aubrey started dropping 90 day fiancé references I have been hoping praying wishing for this episode
Could we also have a Summer House bonus ep?? 🫶🙋🏼♀️
I wanted it
Truly… THANK YOU! No notes 👏🏻
I *do not* watch reality tv, but I did see the first season back in 2013 when I lived in my first ("on campus") apartment in college. I think it was on when my friend/roommate and I got back from our sorority chapter meetings on Monday nights? For some reason it became our thing, even though it is very much not my thing! Anyway, this brought back that blast from the past. I should text her!
I haven’t listened yet but yall don’t understand how bad I needed this
Seeing this pop up on my feed has made my really shitty day a lot better, thank you!
I have never been happier! Thank you!
I am basically only obsessed with yall, and the Bravo universe. This is my DREAM
I mostly know about this world through the lawsuits stemming from the Scandoval fallout. Curious if there's any reason those weren't mentioned...
I laughed so hard at the trumpet thing I thought I was going to pass out
Thank you! This is everything I ever needed. Also, when I told my bf this episode was happening he also said, whose the Vanderpump and why are there rules?
YAY FUN EPISODE!!!
LOL the Try Guys reference caught me so off guard lmaoooo
as a from-the-start fan of both vpr and maintenance phase this is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
"Who the fuck knows? You've heard this man speak!" just took me out
I’ll sign my paycheck directly over to Patreon to hear every VPR rewatch with Mike and Aubrey because my once rich brain is a husk
“You want anything?” “For you to die” the way I screamed !!! Omg such a delicious episode thank you Aubrey !!!!!
I’m very much on the outskirts of the bravo universe and my favorite thing to do is know everything about the shows without ever watching the shows - so this is absolutely filling my cup rn LOL
But what did Michael have to eat at Sur??
I was giggling so hard because I only know Tom Sandoval from Traitors and the edit he gets in that show makes him look so dumb that it's amazing he can walk and talk at the same time.
Dammit Aubrey, I've never seen this show and now "Good as Gold" has been stuck in my head ALL DAY! I don't watch reality TV but absolutely love hearing you two talk about it!
Mike: This is giving me NOTHING 😆😆😆
As someone with Pacific Northwest roots, Mike has the moral authority to sucker-punch anyone who serves him microwaved salmon. His restraint is admirable.
Cyst male is a solid gold Beavis and Butthead joke.
ALOT of people are comparing the Ciara Miller, Amanda Batula, West Wilson drama “Scamanda” to Scamdoval. I’m a fan of both and tbh think Summer House is in a better position than Vanderpump. Starting with some legacy cast is better than scratch 🤷🏻♀️
My friends got me a Scheana cameo for my 40th and you bet your ass she told me she hoped my birthday was « good as gold »
I’ve never seen the show but im re-listening to this episode and I would not have guessed her name was spelled that way if my life depended on it
I love the concept of a garbage and/or reality TV sommelier.
Yeah like I could really use one of those 🤣
As someone who feels like they missed the boat on getting into these franchises, this episode is very important to me 😂💕
Michael joking about just doing reaction videos like I wouldn't watch the heck out of that 🤣
I cannot tell you how much this episode means to me today
what’s wrong with me that i kind of like sandoval’s song
Michael, FYI, Scheana’s best song is called Apples and it’s ABOUT Sandoval.
VPR is a rich text, Aubrey did a good job picking some of the most ridiculous bits, lol
TomTom is NOT cute, Mike! You should have gone to Something About Her. I’ve heard their sandwiches are delicious.
My sister once said, “can you please explain what it is??? Is it a family?” when I mentioned VPR, and I still laugh about it to this day.
I had never watched an episode of Vanderpump rules prior to Scandoval and after listening to my coworker explain it to me I immediately binge watched every season.
Man this brought me back. I most the Scandoval days
Omg that's like my dream combo, so happy to hear you guys talking Bravo and more precisely VPR 😍
til vanderpump is about a restaraunt, versus what i previously thought that it was some kind of real world house type show (i vaguely knew it was a housewives thing from a previous comment Aubrey made but otherwise nothing lol). i really enjoy this kind of silly episode, ngl!
Michael, is Season Two of The Boyfriend as good as Season One? Wondering if I should add it to my reality queue.
I'm curious to know if this was recorded before or after the current Summer House "cheating" scandal broke? Also: I don't care what Mike says, Good as Gold is a fucking banger. 😆
I have zero knowledge of the vanderpump thing so this is both informative and funny. Thanks for filling in my pop culture knowledge.
The erasure of Kristen Doughty from this episode is inexcusable. 😂
The trumpet send me wild 🤪 🤣🤣🤣
YES
Wait, but when you mentioned having a Pumptini, how did you not say, "We need 👏 more 👏 Cosmo👏politans! 👏 Pumptini!"
This was a DELIGHT to wake up to! Maybe my favorite bonus episode so far even over the weird taste tests, it was so much fun!
Wrapping up my first full rewatch so this is giving me LIFE
THANK YOU FOR THIS PUMPASODE
I am not ashamed to say I made a noise that could only be described as sex-adjacent when I saw this pop up
This episode is everything I needed 😭💞
Yesssssssss
Michael a child of the PNW is eating salmon in LA...
Okay now you need to talk about House of Villains next - Sandoval was on the latest season
I'm begging you to watch Married at First Sight Australia. Something about the couching of the language of it being a "social experiment" but also just being normal reality tv show fucking with people I think will send Mike nuts
Hands down, the best reality tv EVER.
I learned a lot this morning. “I don’t hate it… okay I hate it” 😂
Thank you, this was such a great listen!
This is fantastic!
prayers answered!!!
I am so so happy this episode exists as a big VPR and Maintenance Phase fan, I just started listening and already laughed out loud while making breakfast. Truly healing 🙂↕️😌🥰
We’re just one step away from “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” and the coffee enemas
coffee whatnow I... I have so many questions
FINALLYYYYY
I kind of want to add "Do not Oko Yono me" to my lexicon but I fear a lot of people might not get the reference and just think I am that dumb.
it's gotta start somehwere!
Oh I cannot WAIT to hear Audrey’s take on Kristen Doute
omfg the trumpet sent me
I have been thinking a lot lately about how the restaurant industry is just so horrible/exploitative for the folks typically from GM, down stream of the hierarchy. When is there a "Pit" for one of these service places? ("The Bear" was close, but not really)
omg ordered the cookbook! what a great idea for a book.
Giving the people what they want 👏
This was such a lovely lighthearted treat!
As an OG RHOOC and RHONY viewer who gave it all up and now only watches Below Deck, this episode was an absolute delight. I don’t know these people, I don’t care about these people and yet, we ride at dawn for Arianna, right?
Normal people who understand that Sandoval didn’t just cheat - he risked her sexual health and abused her mental health - ride at dawn for Ariana (and Katie Maloney) Don’t go to reddit tho 🫣
The fact that I had no idea what Vanderpump Rules even was and have no interest in reality TV whatsoever and still listened to this episode IMMEDIATELY and fully upon release is just further proof that I'll listen to anything Mike and Aubrey have to say lolol.
If Maintenance Phase put out an episode of Michael saying "fit bit" for 45 minutes I would listen to it as soon as I got the notification lol Sent from my iPant
I needed this so bad! Also- I bought one of Jax’s “Number One Guy in the Group” shirts for my 3-yr old.
Real 👏 House 👏 Wives 👏 of 👏 D 👏 N 👏 D 👏
I think this may be my favorite episode so far
Oh my GOD what a gift to wake up to
Am I the only one not having it show up in my RSS feed?
I'm sorry, I love you guys but the scientifically funniest officiant would have been Richard Simmons (may he rest in peace).
Thank you for this wildly entertaining episode about trash tv while I’m taking my law school finals. Peter’s podcast said I would BOMB! The audacity!
Good luck on your finals!
Truly the only flaw of this episode is that it’s only 63 minutes.
It was never going to be enough
Only listening to this because it’s Mike and Aubrey. I detest "reality" TV and the way these people are worshipped despite not doing anything except be a weird version of themselves on TV. This type of TV is part of what is wrong with our world today. It’s noise and elevates unpleasant people. Yes, I am a grumpy old person.
Right there with you. I do not understand the appeal.
I dont watch any reality tv so i always appreciate when my fave podcasters keep me in-the-loop!
Me my whole youth watching project runway: what the f is a Vanderpump the mean lady isn't even hot why would I bother Me now: AUBREY TELL ME THE SECRETS PLEASE What a good ep. Hope Mike gets good salmon soon.
I’m one of the people who begged for this ep as soon as Aubrey posted about binging it. The magic of VPR and I think why it’s unrepeatable is that the cast had pre-existing relationships with each other and that they were all making this show before reality TV was just a platform to become an influencer, so they were just authentically messy and horrible and weren’t constantly thinking about how this was going to be leveraged to get more followers and sponsorships. In fact, past of the reason it ended ultimately was when they all became too focused on how they were being perceived and started trying to manufacture the audience reaction. You couldn’t make VPR now because everyone who gets cast is consciously trying to make “the next VPR.”
I’m also still listening so maybe you all get into it but the gender politics of the show are FASCINATING. My personal pet theory is that a lot of the extremely toxic and abusive masculinity behaviors are overcompensation for their “feminine” interests like grooming and fashion. Also how all the women immediately call the women their boyfriends cheat on them with misogynistic slurs while continuing to date their horrible boyfriends for years.
Resubscribed just for this ep 💖👄💖
Starting my Wednesday off right - bc like Michael I also need this explanation. unlike Michael - I did not beat a blueberry bush with a stick.
I told my husband about Michael beating a blueberry bush to death as a youngster and he was like “cool!” 😐
What a time to be alive.
I saw this notification at 1am and I can’t even explain how excited I am to listen!!!!!!
Wait. So, is Sir just Waffle House but in Hollywood?
Sorry, but I must. *SUR. It stands for Sexy Unique Restaurant. I’m not kidding.
This is everything I’ve ever dreamed off.
Hang on, people were behaving like this before covid? Have people just always been trash? Sidenote, I do not understand the concept of screen recording while facetiming but people are never accidentally found out by finding their messages unless it's in the most Freudian way imaginable.
aubrey thank you 🙏
All these kids' music sounds like the equivalent of microwaved salmon.
My favorite thing about this episode is how much Mike hated that salmon.
Thrifty king Mike Hobbes was genuinely upset he paid money for that salmon
This is the best day of my life. Can’t wait to listen
Michael had those Lance Bass zingers locked and loaded.
My favorite part to be honest. Bahahaha 😂
These really are the best days of our lives!!!
You knowwww that it’s our time!
This was so fun! I love getting these highlights from a show that I’m vaguely aware of but would never watch. Very entertaining; it made weeding my garden much more enjoyable!
This is my favorite reality TV show (yes, even over Love Island UK). So much so that for my MAT report, I swapped out student names and used the cast member names as pseudonyms.
Laughed out loud when patron dropped me this notification 🤣 Like Mike I am going in blind, ready for the drama
Two things, one: The T.P.I song sounds like a Flight of the Conchords parody and two: Ariana Madix is awesome on St. Denis as Dr Emerson.
I still have trouble believing the bulldozer video isn't a deleted scene from Napoleon Dynamite or something 😅
You made my week!! Love you both. 💕
screaming crying throwing up my two great loves together at last
One thing I really wish they addressed was how Sur cooks their salmon…
I know right, such a big oversight
18:42 - My first thought here was sounding
I cannot believe this, this is the crossover I needed to FIX ME
Mike: "Being awake at night?? I don't get it." Me: "Yeah, 1:30 am is a fine time to start this hour-long podcast, I'll be awake for a while anyway."
This was delightful.
Oh thank god i just finished bingeing all 3 seasons of Vanderpump Villa (i have a blooming social life too pls believe me lol) and i just realized ur opinions on this whole Thing is exactly whose opinions I’ve been wanting all along. Haven’t seen Rules yet but im able to gather context clues from Villa…. So basically I cannot WAIT to let u summarize this for me so i dont have to actually watch it myself :’)
It’s so worth the watch
I really needed this. Thank you.
You're the only people that I can listen to talk about something I not only know nothing about but didn't care to know anything about the thing and I still have a really good time
I would listen to Aubrey and Michael talk about ANYthing!
I truly might cry that this exist 💗💜
As somone who doesn't know what a Vanderpump is, thank you for tackling the important issues of our day
Not all heroes wear capes
Yessssssss! As a VPR Stan I am SO excited
Yessss!!!!!!
