i am very late with this but please PLEASE can we not with the "should you drink one glass of wine per day – I don't know" when this has been extremely debunked (actually there's probably potential for a whole main feed episode in the scientific debate about this whole thing). i know it's not the point of the episode and the rest is up to the usual MP debunking standard but I'm kinda disappointed with this comment

The point about thin people drinking whole milk as kids to support it being a way to be thin made me laugh, because I’m giving my falling off the growth chart child whole milk because it’s an easy way to increase his overall calories. Based on his dad he will naturally just be a thin human, it has fuck all to do with the whole milk (and in fact is being fed to him to make him less dangerously thin) 🙃🙃🙃.

I have six chronic conditions that all Cascade and crash into each other and our results of not having enough medical information in the 90s and 2000s/fat phobia. Wouldn't it have been wonderful if I had been taken seriously with some of my concerns when I was 13 instead of told to eat less and move more? And now my health is spiraling out of control, and I can't afford treatment for two of them and I'm on a never-ending payment plan for others.

Just wanted to add - when talking about the beef industry - cattle producers are actually at an all time high for prices. We are at a really low heifer numbers, which mean prices are super high. Also, very very little consumer increase in beef prices are passed back to the rancher, that primarily is going back to the processors. Just a note!

Sorry to "well actually", but too much protein is no bueno for your kidneys, especially in people with chronic kidney disease, which is super under-diagnosed, sooooo it's not cute for the administration to tell us to protein maxx 🙃

Compounding the problem of misinterpreted data is the fact that people cite articles and authors who sometimes don't even exist. Completely fabricated and then amplified across social media. Episode idea: cycle syncing. I have been seeing a bunch of health advise from cis women about maximizing nutrition and exercise with the stages of their menstrual cycle (often while trying to sell you suppliments or teas of course). Whole thing makes me feel uncomfortable. It uses the language of "addressing women's health" to sell you something and also seems to overemphasize the role that hormons play in women's expirence of life vs cis men in medical terms. Like even just memes about how ppl feel in different stages of their cycle... I'm all for being in touch with your body ect but it feels overly prescriptive and affirming of biological essentialist gender norms

I'm a wastewater treatment process engineer. With increasing protein consumption in the United States the nitrogen loading per capita in the wastewater has been increasing. This makes it more challenging to sustainably remove nitrogen from the wastewater treatment plant leading either increased costs / carbon footprint for water utilities or increased discharges of nitrates / ammonia to the environment. This in turn potentially leads to increased eutrophication, aquatic toxicity, or N2O emissions... a greenhouse gas). When RFK was less publicly crazy he was involved in and advocated for improving N removal... specifically from NYC to the Long Island Sound.

While there are certainly elements of the current US life environment that contribute to chronic disease, every time I hear complaints about the rise of chronic diseases I want to scream, “IT’S BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T JUST DIE OF THESE THINGS ANYMORE!!!” My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer in a routine screening five years ago, and because of the success of a clinical trial he is still alive and well enough to discover a new chronic condition he’s now being treated for. Thirty years ago someone like him would’ve just DIED and never contributed to those terrible no-good very bad chronic illness numbers. Scratch the surface of RFK’s “make America healthy again” rhetoric and what he’s really promoting is a world where, if someone can’t be “healthy” enough, they just die.

I loved this episode a lot! However, a minor nitpick: about eight minutes before the end, Michael refers to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines as "the Biden dietary guides". I always wonder if we substituted "car accident victims" and started assessing that the value of their health care should be tied to whether they 'caused' the car accident that the right wingers would see that they are thinking about health care in the wrong way. Or... They actually would withhold treatment from car crash victims that contributed And... They don't like seat belts either! Lol

We live in a Title I district, so our kids get free school meals without us doing anything. That card was worth around $8/day (so like $40/week), which covered nearly all our household grocery budget, and since we didn't need the money, we were able to just write checks to the Chicago Food Depositry. Re: the weird glazing of Dear Leader in the document - I noticed a similar thing in an FTC press release about a class action settlement (the Amazon Prime renewal settlement, for the curious) - it specifically lauds the “Trump-Vance FTC” for negotiating the settlement. The case was started by the Biden FTC in 2021, so you can see the difference in tone between their press releases and the Trump ones. It is really bizarre, and tbh pathetic.

A

The weird glazing of Dear Leader is also being done by the US embassies in foreign countries, which is worrying. Careful diplomatic language has been thrown out the window for kissing trump's arse as publicly as possible; the US embassy in Vietnam (where we live) keeps posting these kinds of messages "🇺🇸✨🏆 365 days under #PresidentTrump. I looked at a lot of studies about saturated fat from dairy because there were a bunch of articles in the past 2 or 3 years that said that dairy fat was fine. The studies show that sat fat from dairy is different than sat fat from meat, and is either neutral for raising cholesterol or, in the case of things like yogurt or kefir, is very heart healthy. Apparently, no one really bothered to compare sat fat from dairy with sat fat from meat, but just lumped them together. So drink whole milk but limit steak?

Having lactose tolerance as a new way to designate someone as a member of the master race is a new level of absurd. My sister, who is pro- RFK Jr/antivaxx also made some comment about how insects are not a good source of protein if you're white or from the Northern Hemisphere as they were originally eaten by people from equatorial regions. She said something about the fact that insects contain chitin, which is indigestible, makes them an inappropriate source of protein for white people, or something. Nevermind that no one can digest chitin and that this in and of itself is not a reason to not eat insects. She's also really into beef tallow and raw milk. 🙄

I know there are bigger issues but: the Real Food website at the very very bottom has a carousel that says “Eat Real” and then cycles through labeled illustrations like “Watermelon” “Apple” “Steak” “Butter” but… they don’t provide any information and you can’t click on them? It’s just labeled pictures. So weird?!

R
Renee · January 30, 2026

Loved the episode. I think one of the problems with things like an official recommendation for consuming absurd amounts of protein is when you are receiving treatment for a chronic illness it will always be your fault because you're not meeting an insane standard. As a middle aged woman, I constantly have to prove to the doctor that I'm eating enough protein. It feels like I'm eating low fat plain Greek yogurt, tuna, cottage cheese, and hard boiled eggs like it's my job.

A
Astraea · January 30, 2026

I feel this so hard. By far the most effective treatments for my chronic pain are medical (oral medication, injections), but I STILL get told constantly that what I really need to do is constant physical therapy and diet and lifestyle changes and live a perfectly homemade Instagram wellness-y life. And then I have to explain *once again* that I've been doing those things for a decade, and they don't work, and could we please once again consider giving me some *actual fucking medical care??* (Sorry, I am in the middle of a battle with my PCP right now, this clearly hit a nerve....)

Outside of the clear dog whistle of the importance of whole milk, it wasn’t actually missing in schools. Only about 12 states had districts that opted to fully remove whole milk options so they could simplify the caloric requirements in school lunches. The rest of the schools had the option to provide a fruit or vegetable in lieu of other sides/dessert. From 2010 (around the time my kids entered public school, so there’s also my own anecdotal observation) to now, there’s no public information that any school in my state stopped providing whole milk. The constant barrage of misinformation and rage baiting is tiresome.

I definitely want an episode on whole grains. Although the end result is probably “eat more fiber,” since whole wheat has more fiber than white flour. But maybe a side discussion of corn would be cool. I live in the southwest so I want all the corn and beans. Also, the brief discussion on saturated fats was really good info and I need more!!

A
Astraea · January 30, 2026

I'm also in the Southwest! I'd be really interested to learn about different nutritional content, fiber content, etc of various grains. My overall suspicion is that the super-popular "ancient grains" like quinoa and spelt and teff are totally fine but not actually BETTER for you than wheat or oats or rye (the evil "modern" grains, which have been around for exactly as long as the others). Also, this isn't really health related, but I'd love to hear a side quest into how corn and wheat and rice and oats all essentially evolved from grass. We're still eating grass seeds, guys, and it's super cool!

Seconding the comment about colon cancer. The new guidelines’ impact on the rise of colon cancer really concern me. RFK's spasmodic dysphonia is a chronic condition. So, irony? As for the grams of protein recommendation: I used to know a competitive bodybuilder. He always said the recommendation was 1 g of protein per pound, which works out to 2.2 g per kilogram. Given how many muscleheads are floating around in MAGA circles, I wonder if that was behind the higher recommendation.

M
