I know it seems frustrating when it starts happening, but luckily Philosophers, highly intelligent scholars trained in reasoning clearly, and with great insight through difficult problems have solved the problem of not remembering what the second thing you were going to say is! For example, the great Wilfrid Sellars in "Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind" writing with clarity and precision (on an unrelated topic): "The way out of this troubling situation has two parts. The second is to show how "x is red" can be necessarily equivalent to "x would look red to standard observers in standard situations" without this being a definition of "x is red" in terms of "x looks red." But the first, and logically prior, step is to show that "x looks red to S" does not assert either an unanalyzable dyadic relation to obtain between x, red, and S, or an unanalyzable dyadic relation to obtain between x and S. [continues on in this way for rest of book]"

How do you two feel about the resurgence of “heroin skinny” online and disturbingly, as young as 10 year olds scrolling these posts and teenagers trying to fit in 24 inch Dior jeans. I feel not enough people are talking about how massive the internet is taking on this new swing of fatphobia and dangerous behavior. While I’m here, fuck AI and also can you do more episodes on people like Barbara O’Niell?

J
Joe DeFeo · May 14, 2025

One of the most prevailing things I've seen in defense of RFK, Jr.'s plans is the idea that parents of the kids he's trying to "protect" actually hate and resent their children. I've seen a few parents latch onto the idea that they are supposed to see their kids, especially autistic kids, in a certain way (mostly imagined by them), and the MAHA movement recognizes that the parents are actually victims. They see their own children as burdens and hate the life they have. MAHA makes their hatred of family make sense to them.

Re ADHD and overmedication: Watched the show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a beautiful farcical hilarious Tina Fey show about finding joy in the simple things in life and making it through harrowing circumstances, and rape culture, and all that. And then, one of the episodes has a rich mom whose son misbehaves because he is a rich little spoiled turd. The doctor prescribes "Disziplen" which turns the child into a zombie. The doctor tells her not to worry about being a good mother, when she can just dope her kid up. I thought "damn, Tina Fey with a rare miss" and then I kept watching the show, and there's an episode where a one of the protagonists has an "anti-asian hate" mob (the group is named Respectful Asian Portrayals in Entertainment) come after them (complete with one white guy who "identifies as Asian"), and a storyline where a gentrifying grocery store is heroically providing poor black people with nutritious food, and the poor old woman is portrayed as being unreasonable to be anti-gentrification.

How about an episode on herbal tea? Certain teas are supposed to help balance hormones, or help with digestion etc. I know that there's a long history of herbs and medicine but I've found it difficult to find factual information that doesn't look like it's from a wellness company that's borderline making things up or embellishing things to make it seem magical.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this!!! I am at NIH and it is BAD y'all. Great way to say you have no problems is to FIRE ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO TRACK THEM. And those you don't fire are screwed because in addition to all the stoppages and data calls and freezes, they also fired most of the people who make work possible. Want to buy lab supplies? Too bad, we fired most of procurement! Have a pay or benefit issue? Haha, most of the HR teams are gone including EVERY PAYROLL TEAM ACROSS HHS. Honestly finding out you'll be doing periodic updates is the best news I've heard all day. I'm about to send this to a whole bunch of coworkers to bring some moments of joy to the despair.

Ty for addressing the attack on students. Can we get a "Free Palestine" ? Med students and doctors are being targeted and taken by ICE for having spoken up for Palestine. It means a lot when voices with a platform who aren't at-risk for deportation use it. Especially now.

Mike and Audrey make fun of “Rambam” (12th century Rabbi, one of history’s most prominent Jewish scholars) and then think they have a place to judge what is and isn’t antisemitic. If you don’t know who Rambam is, maybe you don’t know as much as you think you do about whether or not “end Zionism” is offensive!! Educate yourselves on the fucking basics, my dudes!!!!

r
ryo · May 4, 2025

I will just add that while supporting Palestine isn’t antisemitic in itself, some people use it as a dogwhistle. They have changed the definition of Zionism from “supporting a Jewish homeland” to mean “supporting Netanyahu’s genocide” and those two things are very much NOT the same. Please be aware of the dogwhistle antisemitism and don’t trust narratives that say it’s black and white. Netanyahu is Israel’s Trump.

Personally, my health went to shit under severe workplace stress. I couldn't leave because I needed the paycheck and the health insurance. **Especially** after my health went to shit, I needed the health insurance. But there are no social safety nets that could have helped me with my chronic illness. I would love to see the Trump administration address that. Or maybe not, God knows what they'd cock up in the process.

Ok. I don’t know if there’s like a designated post for future topic ideas, so I’m just going to put this here… someone popped up in my reels asking “what are your most hated/overrated diet foods?” - I think among the lot of us, we’d have some pretty interesting answers, and there could be a poll amongst the most popular answers and it could be a taste-test episode. For the influencer whose video it was the food was fibre-1 brownies. Which personally, I kinda like. I’ve always liked their lemon bars. But to each their own.

Neurodivergent here! With sensitivity to food dyes!! The food dyes do not cause my neurodivergence 😂 however, because I have a sensitivity to dyes they do make my ADHD symptoms worse. Anything that causes stomach aches and headaches would make my focus worse and overload my sensory processing. I like the idea of taking it out of school lunches, only because it makes food more accessible to kids who have food allergies or sensitivities. You can't always tell what has dyes in it by looking at it (i.e. chocolate pudding- looks like poo, why are you adding dyes). But that's like any "health" food. It just makes more accessible food for more people.

RFK Jr. wants everyone to “eat better” but doesn’t want to do anything to facilitate that - no mention of turning food deserts around or any of a thousand helpful programs he could launch. His grand ideas and broad statements are from the pro life playbook: “every fetus is a potential life that should be cherished and saved,” but once it’s born, good luck raising them. You’re on your own. I never thought I would look back on the Nixon Administration with misty-eyed nostalgia. Thank you, Mike and Aubrey, for making dissent great again. Y’all have long been one of my favorite podcasts, and I get so much information from you, but I have to say it is painful to listen to the two of you, neither of whom is Jewish, tell us what is and isn’t antisemitic (hint: accusing Israel of apartheid and genocide is antisemitic blood libel), RIGHT after mocking the name of one of the most famous Rabbis in Judaism (the Rambam, aka Maimonides). I know Trump doesn’t care about antisemitism at all, but if you’re going to criticize an initiative to fight antisemitism, please look to the Jewish consensus on what is or isn’t antisemitism.

Can confirm, forgetting point number 2 or B is not an aging thing. I’m 35 now but, I have been like that my ENTIRE life! I still remember some cringeworthy moments from as far back as middle school forgetting what I was talking about in the middle of a sentence 😂 Recently, I’ve taken to keeping a small note pad by me and especially on meetings, if there’s a point I want to make, I quickly list out my points. Do I always remember what the phrase or word I scribbled down in the moment had to do with anything? Not always, but that’s another story 😂

This episode and RFKs focus on chronic illness rates and “skyrocketing” diagnoses is making me realize what a gift it would be to the Long COVID community if Mike and Aubrey did an episode on it. We are actually seeing rates of certain illnesses like cancer go up especially in younger people, not to mention the huge spike in disability claims since 2020. RFK will obviously never acknowledge the fact that the pandemic actually never ended, but my hope is that our favorite health and wellness BS debunkers can provide an accessible way for people to understand LC and the damage it has caused/continues to cause.

Long covid would be a great episode! Not enough people are talking about it

Jorie Slodki · April 30, 2025

Also, RFK Jr. has done so much damage that the episode didn't even have time to cover his plans to dismantle the Administration for Community Living (ACL), an agency that supports older adults and disabled people in ways that allow them to live at home and be connected to the wider community. My nonprofit has a service that provides subsidized rides for older adults to get to grocery stores, medical appointments, pharmacies, community events and religious services. It's one of our most successful programs and we have scores of testimonials from people about how it's allowed them to continue living independently. Well, we just found out that the dispatcher we work with has had their federal funding cut and they are closing their call center in June. We are scrambling to find an alternative. No joke, last night I was so angry about RFJ Jr. that I couldn't sleep.

The most frustrating thing about SNAP for me is that I really depended on the COVID emergency expansion dollars to ensure I had money for food past the middle of the month (my ADHD is really bad at not impulse-spending; it hasn't affected rent or my phone bill because those are the first things I pay when my benefits come in). And then once the emergency expansion ended I went from $280/month down to $23/month in SNAP. I agree that SNAP beneficiaries should be able to obtain non-food items, but that ought to be an additional stipend for all SNAP beneficiaries rather than an expansion of what SNAP can buy.

Let's be real, that "whistleblower hotline" is probably a do-not-reply inbox that immediately gets marked as read. I hope one day soon that universities and healthcare facilities just fully stop acknowledging this guy even exists, or give like one head nod with a wink to his orders and then move on with their day.

I made an appointment to be evaluated for autism and the next week rfkj announced his autism registry.... 🙃🙃🙃

Oof I feel that. I’ve been doing a lot of self research to collect data to present to my physician about starting the diagnosis process. Now I’m trying to decide whether or not it’s in my best interest right now to move forward with it.

J
Jorie Slodki · April 30, 2025

I propose a cross-over bonus episode with If Books Could Kill about Evie Magazine, which bills itself as a conservative Cosmo and is backed by Peter Thiel. They push content that promotes fat shaming, anti-vax, anti-abortion, anti-birth control, anti-trans ideas. They are also big cheerleaders for RFK Jr. and put out their own clothing line that includes the "Raw Milkmaid Sundress."

L
LJC · April 30, 2025

That dress sounds... frighteningly pedo-esque.

M
Michelle Ort · April 30, 2025

That 90% of healthcare spending stat drives me mad. I've used it several times in my job as a paralegal for lack of better stats, but the thing about it is that it's worded very carefully as 90% of health care spending is for *people with chronic illnesses,* not even necessarily spending on chronic illnesses. So if you go to the doctor for a cold or a broken arm but you also have diabetes or low back pain or ob***ty, technically that also counts!!! It's complete bullshit.

PLEASE do a fluoride episode oh my God - the fluoride bullshit makes me so incandescent with rage. I grew up on unfluoridated well water and had to have two root canals before I was 25 and get a third crown at 26 because my teeth BREAK CONSTANTLY. the """concerns""" about it don't take seriously the impact of dental decay, especially in a country without guaranteed access to dental care, and it's so frustrating that people act as if these """"concerns"""" aren't rooted firmly in 1950s conspiracy theories about it being a communist mind control drug

I'm still in the middle of the episode but anytime I hear the gov underestimate measles I wish more ppl knew IT CAUSES IMMUNE AMNESIA. Bc the virus hangs out in the lymph nodes it can destroy one's acquired immunity to other pathogens. This was discovered by accident after noticing people who contracted measles got sick w other stuff more often in the years following 😭

G
Gwen · April 30, 2025

The "died with not of" argument is so annoying AND new studies on COVID and driving show that an active infection reduces driving skills similar to being slightly drunk, therefore a share of people with COVID dying in traffic accidents might not have died if they hadn't been infected. 😵‍💫 Probably true for most serious illnesses, don't drive while sick.

Excellent episode as ever! Largely irrelevant but for general knowledge since it was a momentary joke -RamBam is a reference to a 12th century rabbi named Moses Ben Maimon (Maimonides). Just a pretty common Jewish reference so if you see the name elsewhere it’s not necessarily right wing nonsense.

I often find myself screaming while listening to MP episodes, but as a biologist whose postdoc position has been put on hold due to federal funding uncertainty, the way RFK talked about trying to figure out the causes of chronic illnesses WHILE THE ADMINISTRATION IS DISMANTLING OUR COUNTRY’S SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE made my blood boil. THE PEOPLE RESEARCHING ILLNESSES LIKE CANCER, HEART DISEASE, ETC. ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS BECAUSE OF THIS ADMINISTRATION. Ok. Thanks for the great episode!

A friend dropped a bombshell this weekend: I’ve met RFK Junior! It turns out she saw him give a keynote at a business networking event in Seville, Spain. This would have been sometime between 2010 and 2018 when she first lived there. His speech was about solar power and she remembers him being very orange.

Just a quick point, the preferred way to talk about autism and neurodivergence generally is a talking autistic people rather than saying people with autism. It's because most people don't see autism as seperable from themselves. This article talks more about it https://www.autism.org.uk/contact-us/media-enquiries/how-to-talk-and-write-about-autism

Just fyi, Rambam is pronounced “rom-bom” and it’s another name for the historic Sephardic rabbi and physician Maimonides. That journal appears to be a low-impact medical journal pertaining to Jewish issues, based in Israel… Great ep! Thanks for making these updates bearable—it can be hard to engage with the RFK and MAHA stuff without wanting to gouge my eyes out. Also Jillian Michaels jumpscare

I honestly never get tired of hearing about RFK from you guys, I hate him so much it's so cathartic. Keep it up 👍 it just feels so good to hear people explain why the insane people that people are blindly agreeing with are insane. Especially after NPR ran a segment this morning where they uncritically let someone say RFK is good for the autism community lmao. Anyway thanks, love you guys

L
Lauren Milton · April 30, 2025

There were parents in an autism group I'm in (my daughter has autism with a PDA profile) saying "At least he's doing *something*!" Fortunately for them the comments had already been shutdown because I was fucking LIVID. I don't want someone who thinks my daughter needs to be "cured" to be doing "something". We know how *that* ends! I want someone who understands how fucking burnt out I am because we have almost ZERO support and the supports that are there are almost impossible to get without some huge battle that no parent has the energy for and even if we got the supports, it's not fully what we need. People like RFK Jr are why people like my parents believe I "gave" my daughter autism by having her vaccinated against deadly diseases!!!!!! I get the desperation of these parents but I'm not stupid enough to think that RFK Jr means *anything* positive for my family because what we need is a robust community safety net. My daughter doesn't need cured so she can have some white supremacists idea of what life should look like. She needs to be loved and seen and supported for exactly who she is. Sorry, rant over. Your comment about the "uncritical" NPR thing made me wonder if it was a parent like that who said it.
