PsyAmb 150 - Time & Space [ Mix Download ]
Right then — buckle in, because tonight’s mix is a proper trip: somewhere between the familiar and the far-out, a little journey into the deeper reaches of psydub. We’ve got fresh material from Geoglyph, Vlastur, Greenlab and Tor.Ma in Dub and alongside them a few older gems that have aged rather nicely, I think.
Geoglyph drifts through vast, curious sonic landscapes . The sort of sound you could quite happily lose yourself in. Based out of Bristol, Geoglyph is very much a psydub/psy-bient project whose past albums took us on amazing journeys into the spaces between the stars. The vibe in his new album "Otherworldly" is cinematic but also intimate — swirling pads, glitched breaks, hypnotic guitar in places, all stitched together with a sense of wide-open sound-space.
Vlastur, on the other hand, hits with a bit more intent — all low-end throb and heavy pulse. Starting out way back as a bass-player in Athens, co-founder of underground funk groups, migrating into dub-experiment labs, and eventually releasing full-length works under his own name. His influences stretch from dub to dubstep to psy and ambient, peppered with Mediterranean flavours. Check out his new album "Reset" on Bandcamp to get more of his deep bass offerings.
Greenlab bring a different shade: more playful, more groove-oriented, yet still steeped in psychedelic dub undercurrents. The project stretches back to 1999 with three musicians (Roberto Leprotti, Federico Mazzoli and Simone Galgano) with deep roots in chill-out and down-tempo, but always with their ears open to the dub aesthetic. Their recent release "Beyond Borders" on UK’s famous Liquid Sound Design label showcases how they carve their own identity in the psydub realm.
Tor.Ma in Dub album "Full Circle" does something clever with space and echo delivering proper craftsmanship in the dub domain. Coming out of the psy-trance movement initially, his style is a kaleidoscopic montage of dub filtered through psychedelic realms: dark, trippy, hypnotic, bass-driven, a twisted interpretation of steppers dub.
The mix as a whole is, I reckon, a smooth sort of ride: a few moments to sink into the bass, a few to drift and reflect, some tracks that wrap around you like a blanket, others that press you forward with a heartbeat. I hope you enjoy where it takes you.
So lean back, put on some good headphones or decent speakers, and let the sound waves carry you. And before we set off on the next sonic wander, just a quick word of thanks to those of you who’ve been tuning in, supporting the project here on Patreon, and saying kind things about the mixes. It honestly means a lot. I never quite get used to the idea that people out there, somewhere, are listening and finding something in it. So thank you for your continued support, and here’s to more strange and wonderful sounds together.
Cheers,
PsyAmb
