The Real Cyclops (Graphic)
Holoprosencephaly (hollow-proz-en-sefaly) sounds like a spell from Harry Potter, and if it were it would definitly be an unforgivable curse. It’s one of the most severe brain malformations that can occur during early fetal development and when it hits hard, it can lead to cyclopia. Yes, like the one-eyed monsters of Greek myth. Except, it’s much more tragic than legendary.
What Is It Exactly?
Cyclopia is the most extreme manifestation of alobar holoprosencephaly, where the forebrain fails to split into two hemispheres. Normally, during early embryonic development (around weeks 3 to 5), the prosencephalon divides into a right and left hemispheres. These go on to form two eyes, two cerebral hemispheres, and a nice symmetrical face.
But when this process fails, you don’t get two eyes. You get one midline eye (or a single eye cavity), often accompanied by a missing or malformed nose. Sometimes the nose is replaced by a proboscis (a tube-like structure) above the eye socket. A grim little elephant trunk that acts as a poor substitution for the nose.
What Causes It?
The causes are a cocktail of genetic, chromosomal, and environmental insults. Some cases are associated with:
Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) gene mutations, yes, that’s actually its name. And no, it doesn’t make the baby faster.
Maternal diabetes
Exposure to alcohol, certain infections, or teratogenic drugs during pregnancy.
Basically, anything that messes with early neural patterning can sabotage this delicate process.
How Rare Is It?
Extremely. Cyclopia occurs in 1 in 100,000 pregnancies. Nearly all of these result in miscarriages or stillbirths. When a live birth occurs, survival past a few hours is virtually unheard of.
When it does happen, it makes headlines; not in the “miracle baby” way, but in the “holy hell, what is nature doing” kind of way. And in case you’re wondering, no, there is no treatment. The brain’s not just misshapen; it’s fundamentally incomplete. Neurosurgery can do a lot these days, but it can’t fix the lack of two hemispheres.
Why it Haunts the Imagination
Cyclopia is the kind of anomaly that shows up in myth, horror, and internet hoaxes — and it’s no wonder. It hits us right in the “uncanny valley of life”. Something that almost looks human,, but not quite. When a body is rearranged this drastically, it feels like a glitch in the matrix. And in a way it is. It's a glitch in the matrix of DNA. A signaling pathway gone awry.
The Dark (and Honest) Truth
There’s no silver lining to cyclopia. It’s a devastating error in development. But as strange and uncomfortable as it may be, it serves as a stark reminder: the human body is a high-stakes gamble of cellular choreography. When it goes right, it’s beautiful. A miracle even (given everyhting that is involved).
When it goes wrong… the results are raw, unsettling, and yet we can't look away.

It must be absolutely devastating for this to happen to anyone who is expecting a healthy baby, only to discover this is not the case and that there’s nothing to be done. And that’s with all our modern technology. It’s bound to have been very distressing for anyone experiencing this in centuries gone by because at least we have scientific knowledge and understanding of why this happens and not just the horror of the situation (I say horror, because of the way the Middle Ages and various other times would place blame on all manner of random things that could not be explained) and I’m sure people thought it was the devil or a curse or something like that. Personally, I just feel for anyone who has been through the trauma and lost a baby in this or any other way 😢
I know someone with this deformity. And he’s still alive and in his late 20s.
I don’t think the person you know has this same condition. It is incompatible with life.
I am curious as to the detail behind the photo with the child? With the finer hair. The photo looks like a small toddler..? Did a child survive longer that a couple days post birth?
In my haste I grabbed the wrong image. While it demonstrates what it would look like, it's a fake from a side show.
So cyclops were not just created from mind, just some poor baby was born misshapen. I don't want to even imagine what happened to the mothers in the early ages, when science was not even a word...
Actually, I've read that the skulls of elephants were found, and where the trunk inserts in the middle of the elephants face, is a large hole which people mistook for a single eye. The elephant's skull being so much larger than human skulls, people assumed they must be the skulls of One-Eyed Giants.
Wow, in all my 79 yrs I jabs never seen this. So sad.
This is so fascinating. Thank you for sharing!
