Anatomy Image - Miscarriage - 19 Weeks

With news of a Selena Chandler-Scott being arrested in Tifton, Georgia for disposing of her miscarried fetus in a outdoor trash bin, I thought it would be a good time to share an image of what a fetus look like at this stage.

As graphic as this image is it may not capture the harsh reality of what Selena would have had to endure. A fetus may die a week or more before being expelled and as a result, the tissue may come out in clumps or pieces of varying size.

In the event it stays whole, the fetus will likely be encapsulated in the amniotic sack. This is what you see above.

Knowing these detail, maybe it is easier to understand why it is not unreasonable to put the remains into a plastic bag and dispose of it.

What has been lost in all the online conversations is the terrible reality that so many mothers have to endure. Even more tragically, they often have to process the miscarriage alone, or with very little support.

In Selena's case, she has had an arrest piled on top of an already horrendous experience.

This is heart breaking. I had a miscarriage when I 23 years old. No one can comfort you. The loss is yours to bear as the only persons who was physically connected to that baby. I wasn’t very far along and would have had no idea what was coming out of me and when. Most women miscarry into a toilet. That’s a harsh reality. But the baby is not there anymore. They have passed on and their little bodies are just somehow going back into the natural cycle of life. It is hard to come to terms with the fact that pieces of your child were flushed down a toilet. But you can’t tell what anything is. And there is so much blood and tissue. It breaks my heart to even think about it now and it’s been 25 years. I’m so sorry to every woman who has had to endure this pain and the fact that the authorities got involved is despicable.

People are senseless trying to press charges against someone who disposed of her fetus in an unorthodox manner. She is grieving as it is and then they do this? Shameful! I'm glad they dropped the charges.

As someone who has lost a baby at this stage and helped other mothers capture memories of their lost baby’s, this isn’t the best representation but it is what they commonly look like when first birthed. Inside the membranes there is a little person who was fully formed usually however the death processes often cause discolouration, skin slippage, and even deformation of the skull from the forces of the birthing process. It’s a very graphic sight. Their skin also dries and breaks down very quickly once exposed to oxygen because they were never meant to endure such conditions at this stage. More support needs to be given and more education is essential to ensure that the average person understands that pregnancy loss, stillbirth and miscarriage are actually far more common than thought. One in five. One in five pregnancies end this way. And that’s just an average. Some women like me have much higher rates of loss. Out of 9 pregnancies I have 4 children. Not even counting the 2 multiples. That’s still less than a 50% success rate.

I’m a support worker in gynaecology and BEP(bleeding in early pregnancy) for the NHS and it’s heartbreaking to tell any woman that’s she’s miscarriaging. I only work with ladies up to 15 weeks and then labour ward take over. Miscarriage is so much more common than people realise 😢😔

Everyone saying it’s not 19 weeks because they had a miscarriage and it was “fully formed”… this baby is clearly in an amniotic sac still. We can’t see everything perfectly. But I can make out what I THINK is a placenta, a little head, and legs through the sac.

I had a miscarriage at 19 weeks as well, although I was told that my baby had passed at 15 weeks...it took my body 4 additional weeks to clue in. He was fully formed and I was able to hold him in my hand after he was born. It's not a fun process to endure, my heart goes out to her.

I did a more formal update on Tiktok, but yes all the charges have been dropped. The DA said there was no relevant case law to support the improper disposal or the concealment of a body charges.

This is so sad 😿 she doesn't deserve to be criminalized because of a traumatic experience and how she decided to cope. The world is so cruel

I wish that it was possible to put this on a more widely used platform, it's so annoying to find images that aren't from obviously biased sources

Unfortunately most platforms will not allow anatomical images such as this because they are deemed shocking, graphic, and or controversial.

The tragedy is that her trauma and pain are all being overshadowed by people wanting to blame her. I can't even imagine how she must feel.
